Flornmonk no. Deconstruction and breaking down of a song ruins the magical aura around the tune. A good magician doesn’t show his hand. Take a page out of David Lynch’s book and keep everything hushed.

@@scorpiusbalthazar4327 I agree with you, when listening to the album on hi-fi equipment, (Naim + Focal amp) it sounds terrible, very saturated and strident treble
I absolutely appreciate the work that Jimmy T did here. How many albums have Mangini played with Dream Theater? This is the first album where I hear Mangini sounding like Mangini.
Jakub Vaňous that’s what I’m saying I love when they give an instrumental version of the album let’s face it those guys playing is why I listen not the story or singing part
JP's use of muting is so helpful to add dimension to my playing, it's one of those little things you don't think about too often but makes all the difference.
JP's sensory imagination seems exceptional, making the band so fitting to the name Dream Theater (visual dimension added). His guitar tone invoking chocolate cake before and now his imagery of him on the mountain top with hawks flying by him is great.. the names D. Theater and Images and Words set the course for the musicians forever it seems..
watching 5 years later: John especially and perhaps the rest of the band, have amazing engineering and producer knowledge. Yet, use professional sound engineers to recreate their (John's) ideas. Makes for an amazing production every time, an all time favorite guitarist, well-deserved recognition
One thing everyone keeps saying is how damn good this mix was. From top to bottom. Buy that barn! Mix everything there from this point forward! Also, awesome to hear Jimmy T break it down with the man mountain himself!
Distance Over Time has a terrific mix. I hope they continue working with Jimmy T. on subsequent efforts. Being a bass player, I particularly liked how John Myung's bass sounds throughout too.
Damn, this kind of videos is what most of us really need. John and Jimmy is really a great guy, I mean.. he talked so many things and tried to explain in the way we would understand. Please do more vids like this!

I can listen to the maestro talk all day long. Magnificent album, beautiful song. I just can't get enough of "Distance Over Time". It's going to go down in history as one of the most iconic Progressive Rock / Metal album. I may sound like a fan boy but I'm not being biased at all in my opinion. There IS NOT one weak song on the album. All 10 tracks have their own unique identity and doesn't sound jaded or boring for even a second. 'S2N' is my favorite song on the album. John Petrucci is GOAT \m/ \m/
Sameer Sharma I agree to a great extent but would rather say that out of reach was somewhat cliches and sounded boring... maybe it was because the other 9 songs are soooooo good
DOT was a really boring by-the-numbers prog metal album in my opinion. So stating for a fact that it's an iconic album without bad songs is biased, as well as I'm biased.
@@dinghaoluo2769: When 'Vacant' was released on "Train of Thought", many people thought the same. Folks had identical thoughts when 'Along For The Ride' was released on "Dream Theater". He totally couldn't keep a straight face with the "guitar god on the mountaintop, with each note being a hawk flying all around you" imagery. I totally love the Tap-like prog-god excess being invoked here. Go John!! 😎
The sound of Barstool Warrior's solo is so damn powerful. I played the guitar years ago and DT was my inspiration. I heard so many solos, and I can say without any doubt that this solo is an amazing evolution of what petrucci played before. Congratulations to dt and the staff that work for this amazing album, I hope to enjoy it live very soon.
I started play guitar at 15 years old.I almpst stoped for many years , and at my 45 started again with a new guitar. Petrucci was one of the reason.(Although i still cant play him...)
I totally didn't hear the e-bow guitar layers, under the solo at 14:41, as guitars. I actually thought it was a string pad, or similar from Jordan. I love finding out about stuff like this!
Have seen him at least 6 or 7 times. This is great!!! The insight into the recording world is awesome!! Jimmy is fantastic!! But I would love an LTE III!!!!!!!!! That was the best , for me!!!
Man, I try to have conversations with my buddies about the intricacies; tones and time signatures; the precision and mesh of all the instruments, and how this Album is Mangini's best work (to me).... And they just look at me with that blank stare and say "what the f***k you talking about?". Depressing.

I don't know much about mixing, but if you listen to their album, it's stereo with the guitars coming out of both speakers playing slightly differently. How do you get stereo guitar sound for live performance? There is only one Petrucci. I'm really curious.
Train of Thought and Distance over Time were both made in less than a month, and both are the band’s heaviest (doesn’t mean best) albums IMO. Just interesting to note that.
