I've been following fasting protocols since 1978. Im 64 and my health is phenomenal. Right now I'm doing several weeks of alternate day fasting, but only during the week. So I'm fasting 36hrs twice a week; Tuesday and Thursday. So I eat dinner Monday night and I don't eat again until Wednesday morning. I "ride the keto wave". Week 4 I will do a 3-day fast. I've done 5 days. Back in the day my husband and did 30 days on diluted vegetable juice.

My mother was aspirating due to dysphagia. Everything she was putting in her mouth was going in her airway and she didn't even realize it. So, when she went to the hospital with aspiration pneumonia they restricted everything by mouth. Well, that goes for everything - water and food. The docs continued to withhold even after 4 days. No IV hydration, no food, nothing! My mom was coherent and was begging for something to drink because her mouth was so hot. She was basically starving and at that time she was 91 years of age. The docs told me to basically let nature take its course and let her move on already. I was screaming at doctors to give her something to drink or at least IV fluids because she was 100% coherent and suffering. Finally after day 5 they started fluids and after getting with social workers at the hospital and basically threatening them with lawsuits due to being inhumane, they at my request inserted a PEG tube to feed her through stomach feeding on day 6. However, even after the procedure, they had to wait another 24 hours to start the feeding to prevent infection. So, my 91 year old mother went 5 days with NO water, NO IV, and 7 days with NO food!
I can't even imagine how she survived, but it proved to me how resilient the human body is. She lived another 4 months after that and eventually succumbed to aspiration pneumonia because she was stubborn and wanted to have her morning coffee and eat breakfast. However, at least she was able to live the last few months happy and not starving or restricting her of anything. She died in her sleep just 5 months before turning 92. So, if my mom who had several underlying health issues can go 7 days without food, anyone can! However, I would never ask anyone to go without water for as long as my mom did.

Re fasting and eating disorders. When I was young, I would go 1-2-3 days without eating. I was told I had an eating disorder. So, I faithfully ate 5 small meals a day, "healthy" vegetables, and fruit, lean proteins, etc. Well, I've learned that was incorrect. Always overweight, always hungry .. even when I gave up highly processed foods. Now? ZERO processed foods, ZERO sugar, scant carbs, and I fast regularly, and my body thrives on it.

Start slow with lean gains fast (8-16) eventually to OMAD (22-23 hr.)
24 hr. fasts , ADF (36 hr. every other day). This is the most effective for
me, but hard to maintain over time. Sometimes do a bone broth fast
      instead of water fast.
Consider going to Carnivore Diet and resistance training. Both will help
you gain muscle weight. Do this before going for longer fasts like
OMAD and ADF. Protein is the key. Those are my thoughts. 😀

I might get hate for this but it needs to said. Eating "disorders" is a poor excuse to complain about being obese. Fasting is the most safe and amazing way to heal the body while one can also reduce weight. The bigger and more sister issue here is how being obese has been allowed to be a normal thing nowadays. Nobody has "fat phobia", we just know you can do better for yourself. This fat acceptance culture will put far more people in a grave if we continue to not call obesity out.

Ive had the same thing. Fasting is a great tool but you have to couple it with gentle and low impact exercise. The biggest mistake I’ve ever done was not exercise. I know you’re like how?? I’m in so much pain. Ironically, exercising as best you can, even leg lifts in a chair, eventually start relieving the pain and stiffness. Your muscles have atrophied and aren’t supporting your knees. It’s an excruciatingly painful nightmare to start, there’s no way to sugar coat that, but you have to move to get nutrients back to the knee to start the rebuilding process. The way that I’m doing it and finding success is I fast (currently doin 2 meals in 6 hrs). Twenty min before my first meal I exercise (search upright physical therapy on here for knee rehab exercises) then I eat and ensure it’s quality protein and veg to feed my muscles. It’s a very slow process but if you’re consistent daily, you will see gradual and marked improvement! Hope you try it and it helps!

Whole, one-ingredients foods, focusing on protein and fat. No processed food, sugar, grains, or seed/vegetable oils. And depending on your issues, you may also want to limit fruit and veg. If you’re obese or insulin resistant or have fatty liver, cut out fruit. If you’ve got gastrointestinal issues or autoimmune, cut out or limit veg. Some people do a fatty meat and water only diet just as an elimination diet to see what reverses, then they slowly add stuff back in one at a time.
