  • In this video we briefly look at the viewfinder vs live view screen, and we answer the question - which is right for you?
    Hey! My name is Corey and I am coming at you out of Wellington, New Zealand. I am a photo enthusiast and I do some pro work like real estate and weddings. I used to paint and sketch but I thought it would be easier to simply snap pictures than to paint them. How wrong was I? This photography lark is a tricky business getting it right, but is an awesome buzz all the same!
    Thanks a million for watching and please like the video if it was interesting to you. Also go ahead and subscribe if you are into photography, I’ll look forward to sharing more clips soon.

    I like screen more, but I found that when shooting video outdoors, there is too much light. EVF helps me to zone out all the light around me. So I use EVF to check that the focus and exposure is correct, if it is a bright day.

    Great video! The only problem I have shooting through the viewfinder on my Canon EOS200D is that you can’t control which part of the scene the exposure is measured on whereas you can on the live view. I have missed shots due to exposure being out because of this so I’m trying to shoot more live view now as you can see what you’re getting before you hit the button.

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy
      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  Год назад +1

      Hey Mr John! On the 200D can you set it to spot metering and then move the metering point around in the viewfinder? At least over the focus points? In live view can you spot meter anywhere in the frame? That’s interesting to know. I have to be honest I mainly ALWAYS use evaluative metering, I need to be more creative with metering in the moment, at least think of it, instead of just white balance, shutter, aperture, ISO, focus… need to include metering in there sometimes too. Have a cool week Mr John. Let me know about the spot metering mode for your 200D

    Hello. Thans for this informative video. I have a question. Do you find any difference in autofocus performance when using the viewfinder (phase detect) vs Live view (contrast detect)? I mean in focus accuracy.
    I am new to photography and still learning the functioning of a camera.

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy
      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  3 года назад +3

      Hi there yes there is a difference, viewfinder focus is more speedy and seems to be more intuitive to what you want to focus on, live view can be more erratic and a bit slower to acquire. I pretty much always use tap to focus on live view, tap shoot, tap shoot and so on. I am using live view more these days for the composition advantage but when time counts I’m on the viewfinder.

      It is worth noting though that, aside questions of personal preference, the live view autofocus is devoid of the focus errors that often affect the optical viewfinder AF, because the AF actually uses the imaging sensor, not the separate AF sensor. If you intend to use the optical viewfinder, you really should take the time to calibrate the AF Microadjustment for each lens to minimize this error. Plenty of videos on RUclips for AF microadjustment, and it's a pretty easy DIY.

      @@TheOtherPhotoGuy My Canon DSLRs use phase detect on both viewfinder and live view. Live view is more accurate, because there is no possible mechanical misalignment of image sensor and AF sensor. That being said, I have seen some landscape photographers who use live view and manual focus, even using a loupe to study the image, just as we used to do on the ground glass of a view camera. There are focusing loupes available to fit the LCD of DSLRs.

      Hey there, have you adjusted the diopter dial on the side of the viewfinder. It could be due to your eye relief (the distance from the viewfinder) you see it sharp but in fact it is not sharp, not sure if this is the right advice but worth to check.

    • @TheOtherPhotoGuy
      @TheOtherPhotoGuy  2 года назад +3

      Hey Adrian, thanks for the comment! Hmmm I think this is because when you use live view it locks the mirror up and is using the main sensor for focusing, whereas when using the viewfinder the mirror remains down to shoot the image into the viewfinder prism but some of the light is redirected by a second mirror behind the main mirror and down onto the focussing sensor which is both faster and more accurate in your model - I don’t know all the technical remarks for this but I also know the viewfinder in DSLR’s is the more speedy and accurate option as it is the primary design of the DSLR to use the focus sensor, hope this helps and have a great day!

      Hey Naoshin, firstly thanks for your kind comments! Hmmm I am not sure how the viewfinder may have been in use on the 700D because of course the mirror flips up and blocks out the prism - could you also see the live view screen from your vantage point or perhaps they were using a loupe attachment to view the live view screen as if it is a viewfinder? Very confusing situation but aside from the loupe I do not know of a way to use the viewfinder for video on a DSLR. Have a lovely day and hear from you again soon.

      @@naoshinsharmin8132 oh I see, yep definitely a mirrorless camera then that’s correct… hmm if you trouble for focus either use manual focus if you have still subject or use a single point autofocus mode where you can set the exact spot for the focus to catch on to. You can even focus-recompose if you use OneShot mode so long as you stay on the same focal plane.
