Great video. The biggest problem with the screen is that we older photography buffs forget that it is there. We (or at least I am) are so conditioned to look through the view finder that automatically we put the camera up to your eye, and then minutes later you find yourself thinking "I could have made that so much easier if I I had used the screen".

As an old guy too, I never had that problem. Switching to live view was natural and instant. I've never even looked in the evf but then I wear glasses so I have an incentive to use the live view.

Left eye dominant, eyeglass wearer and old timer here. I don't think I forgot the screen but rather preferred using the viewfinder after 45 years of holding the camera properly, how my eye scans the VF automatically, etc. Nevertheless and depending on which camera I use, I have no problem switching to the LCD just like switching from an SLR to a MF waist level viewfinder.

I use dslr cameras, and almost exclusively the viewfinder. It helps me exclude the outside world and focus on the subject. Also i find it easier to manipulate the controls. Great video as always.

I am 47 years old thus was taught analog photography in the early 90’s when the only medium was film. So the older generation only had small optical viewfinders to rely on, viewing through a viewfinder is made very difficult when viewing your subject at a distance using very wide-angle lenses; for this reason I much prefer rear LCD screens for framing my subject, as the image on the LCD is much bigger than through a viewfinder you will quickly notice any potential errors and correct them before making the exposure, therefore I nearly always use the rear LCD on my Z7ii.

The one thing I have learned when taking pictures with my glasses on is that my glasses will automatically darken when outside so when I look at the subject I want to photograph it will appear darker that in real life so I'm adjusting the camera to lighten up the picture. So removing my glasses while taking the picture through the view finder is the best way.
BTW, love your videos, I've learned alot

Thanks for another great photo, Paul. I had pretty much given up on learning how to use my DSLR until I discovered your down-to-earth and easy to understand videos. One advantage that I use often with live view is digital zoom/manual focus. I found that this feature sometimes gives me sharper photos than simply relying on autofocus.

I love these videos! Many of them I revisit to refresh my memory on various subjects. Paul, you always keep your explanations clear and simple. I enjoy your teaching ability and your going over some of the most basic features and techniques.
I wholeheartedly agree about using the viewfinder and the live view features. Just recently I took a photo of a little stream near my house. I only had my monopod with me, but used the live view so I could better see what the photo would look like in monochrome. I was quite happy with the photo, although it would have been much better if I had my tripod, but I hadn't planned on that shot. Still, the live view came in very handy.
Generally, I use the view finder when taking photos in general. So there really are advantages to both depending on the situation, and you very clearly brought those out. I look forward to future videos while also reviewing past ones to help sharpen my skill. Thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos.
Quick question, this may have been brought up before, but I notice that you don't use a camera strap. Is there a reason or a recommendation? I always have mine on simply because I want to prevent the unthinkable - dropping the camera.

I use LV a lot. I heard using LV also provides the benefit of locking the mirror up (you hear the click) which reduces camera shake when taking a pic. I like having my Nikon D5500 display the image and the Histogram in B&W so I can adjust subsequent exposures more accurately. I use both as needed and just bring along an extra battery.
I also set a back button AE-L for focus and I use a remote trigger or the camera's self-timer feature. The LV screen also doubles as an info. screen which makes it very easy to adjust various things like exposure bracketing and auto focus type without the need to go into the main menu.

Hello from Greece. Great Videos, very helpful. I have canon 250D and I use almost always the screen for one main reason. The screen is touchscreen and I can change in an instant the focus by tapping the thing I want in the screen. For me is faster and make me feel sure about the photo I just took. And with Image Stabilization of canon you don’t need to lock the camera in your eye and elbows because the result is every time perfect…

Paul - LOVE the graphics in this! My first SLR was a Nikon EM with your favorite 50mm on it (camera died, I may still have that lens), so the VF feels right to me. And is still almost mandatory, depending on the lighting. As I move more into astrophotography, and even sometimes on big landscapes, I do find the screen of value... also some of my flowers are too tall to take even head-on, so the tilt-out screen is quite beneficial.

    • @photogenius
      @photogenius  2 года назад +1

Glare is a common problem and one of the reasons why I wanted to make this video and to make everyone aware of how great the viewfinder can be. However if you really want to shoot using Live View outdoors and glare is an issue there are a couple of things that may help. The first is to turn the brightness up on the LCD screen, this can be done via the menu. I have also heard you can buy sheets of anti glare screen protector that you can cut to size and stick on the LCD - I have not tried this myself.
      Thanks for watching Phil.

Dual pixel Autofocus is very good on Canon DSLRs like 70D, 80D or Rebel T7i T8i
It gets face detection and exposure preview, unlike OVF autofocus.
That said, I agree that if youŕe handholding.... nothing beats the stability of having your camera closer to your body.

I do use the view in manual mode once I've set everything before taking the picture. I plan on getting one more lens, if my reverse mount doesn't satisfy me, I'll buy tubes extension for macro photography.

For Canon users, if you use newer STM or USM lenses, you can leave the switch always at AF since you always can do manual focusing 100% of the time.
If you have other lenses, you may have to switch to MF if you want to do manual focussing.
In the OVF, there is a little green led on the lower left corner and a beep sound to indicate that you are in focus even in MF mode. In life-view, digital zoom can help with MF.
For MACRO or close-up photography, MF is almost always the mode to use otherwise AF mode is simpler.
You may have to stop down the aperture to F8 -f11 increase the depth of field.
When using the OVF, there is a button in front left of the camera called the [depth of view preview] button that you can press to check which parts of the subject will be in focus before you snap the shot.

mid range canon dslr has Dual Pixel AF which is acceptable for live view shooting but a bit slower than viewfinder PDAF system.
Nikon liveview AF is Comtrast Detection AF which is very much slower and useless in case of moving even slight moving subject.
Most recent Mirrorless cameras have very accurate sensor based AF system which is basically a camera with live view only.

I used it about 2 or 3 weeks ago, just briefly but when I turned the dial from camera to live view it came on & all was fine, but now when I turn that dial to live view, all I get is a black screen , is it possible the dial has an issue ? when I put it on live view it actually takes a picture and it's a black screen with a icon in the upper left hand corner that looks like a movie recorder and on the screen that is for a photo screen, it normally shows what the histogram is, but on the photo where it was the video photo, it has the histogram part there, but of course it has no detail in it. it's just black ! it almost appears that the camera & the live view has gotten mixed up with each other. Have you ever seen this ?

Extra Tip: if you need more adjustment for your eyes, Canon has eyepieces with dioptric correction, this adds up to the adjustment wheel

Can you do a video on customizing what is actually on the LSD screen in live view? I have a Canon 80D and I want specific setting options and I want to remove some to declutter the LSD live view. You touched on that, but looking for more details and can't seem to find it.

You can use the [info] button that can toggle between different amount of information in life-view. In the 80D, the [info] button is next to the [menu] button.

I can only use the screen on my Pentax Kx Dslr when in video mode, presumably the mirror has to be raised to expose the sensor while filming preventing the use of the optical viewfinder. Also I have had back focussing issues with the Pentax, now fixed, when using the viewfinder but not when using liveview due to the differences in the way the camera determines focus. Will agree though liveview is slow.

great video Paul, must be honest I tend to be a bit old fashioned when it comes to viewfinder or screen, I learned with 35mm film so it's viewfinder 99.9%
I'd be interested in your thoughts on field monitors and their use in photography as an alternative to, and the pros and cons of their use, over viewfinder or screen

I use live view for one cause it’s there to use, mirror lock up is another reason. If I had an EVF then I would take advantage especially on the bright days. I’m all landscape with tripod.

Good tips. I am trying to improve my street photography lately and noticed with several of the videos I've seen where the photographer is recording themselves walking though the city, they are relying on their Live View to take photos. Is this to make it faster to take photos? I heard street photographers shouldn't spend much time staying still and supposedly making it look like you're not trying to take photos since that may make people nearby nervous, especially if you're using the viewfinder to photograph random people.

Thanks to your video on photographing the moon, I now use both the view finder and the LCD screen. I also use the screen when doing product photos, where your tip about the digital zoom is extremely handy. Thanks very much for all the information you share in your videos Paul, they are really good.

Glad we have Digital but in a lot of ways miss the film camrea. Love the film era the entisapation on what it will be. There was Nothing like taking a photo, take it down to the photo lab and wait a few days to a week to see how they turned out.
How we come so far now mirrorless

HELP!!! (Please, Paul) - On the back of my Canon 7D Mark II, there is a switch, and above the switch, on the right, is a live view symbol (a camera with a white LCD box representing the live view), and to the left is an image of a video camera. ONLY when I position the switch to "video" do I receive a live view image in the LCD. When I turn the switch to the camera icon position, expecting to see live view, instead I see my camera settings. WTH???????????
I want to use live view for macro photography (which you've presented beautifully), not in video, but in still photos.
    Please offer the solution.
    Many thanks!

With the switch in them camera position, pressing the Start/Stop button should engage live view, however if you do not see it then press the info button which should do the trick.
      Hope that helps.
      Paul.

Horses for courses, I suppose. Thnx Paul. As an aside, perhaps you could explain how a monochrome setting does not effect the RAW file - only JPEG. (If I'm correct)

    • @photogenius
      @photogenius  2 года назад

Hi Cliff, when shooting RAW you get all the data - the camera does not make any adjustments, compress or remove any data, so you get the full colour image.
When shooting Jpeg however the camera is processing the image and then compressing the file to make it smaller - so settings that you select such as white balance, file size and colour profiles (monochrome etc) are "baked in" and applied when the image is saved to the card.
There is an option to select and shoot Jpeg + RAW files simultaneously, if you so that and shoot monochrome then you will have two files saved to the card, a Jpeg in Monochrome and a RAW file in colour.
      Hope that helps.
      Paul.

Hi Paul, I have been following your videos from India with ♥️. I just have small query. When taking a group photo in Nikon D3200 using the viewfinder, which focus point do I have to focus on to get focus on all persons in the group?
