+MightyCoont There are three versions of Hurt. The version from Downward Spiral, this live version w/ Bowie and Johnny Cash's version. Each is amazing in their own way, because each mean something completely different. Its a testament to how powerful of a song it is, to be sung by three amazing artists and tell three different stories. I have my personal preference, but in the face of that accomplishment....well, it hardly matters.
You know what, fuck Johnny Cash. Talented man, but his song this is not, nor is it Bowie's despite how great this duet is. How many songs did he write in his whole career? 20, 30-ish? I don't care if the comment is uncalled for, I'm tired of the inevitable "that song belongs to Cash now" comment...oh look, there's one below the OP. I won't bother to get into how Cash (for lack of a better word) raped the context of the song with his vastly differt sound and themes. Again, heavy word there, but I don't care. And I don't care how Trent feels, saying "it's not his song anymore". Fuck Trent. The guy who wrote this song died 17 years ago from an overdose. Much respect to the happy father of two who bears his name and still puts out good music, but he's not, nor will he ever be *there* again to write or own this song. It's the epitaph of a semi-fictional hollow, broken man, not a Christian who does country covers for the maudlin masses.
What I love about Hurt is that the original and the Cash version are both incredibly moving and amazing. However, they are sang as two different songs. This song embodies the angst and anguish a younger person would feel. Whereas the Cash version captures a lifetime of pain and regret. It's as if they are being song by a son and then a father back to him. Also this has David fucking Bowie in it. Rad.
Your comment is so right on. My son Jimmy passed away in 2008, he loved NIN but, when Johnny Cash sang it he actually did a thesis on how one song could be interpreted by the way two people of different generations sang it.I just had to comment because it’s so true
I agree, and I'd even add that this version is something else entirely, Trent has been on record saying his respect for David and this was a dream come true for him, you can see his emotions overflowing throughout the performance, an amazing piece of art
I made sure that this was the first concert I ever went to back when I was 13. I saw the Camden NJ date with Prick opening. The gradual transition between the NIN and Bowie sets is still uayched to this day.
I think it's amazing the sonic blend of their voices, both such TRUE musicians and amazing talents in their own right.Trents voice slicing through like a shard of broken glass, and bowie's backing vocals smoothing the edges while allowing that grit and power to really shine through. They killed it. I love the cash version (apparently an unpopular opinion, even though trent liked it too) but this version is a FIERCE rival. so glad they both exist so I don't HAVE to ever choose. someone earlier tried to say "ohhhh this is a song about a broken man....what would christian johnny cash know of any of that...not realizing that the man in black had his own struggles with drug and alcohol addiction and quite a lurid past himself, which I believe shone through in the visceral "pain" that can be felt in his version of "hurt". But whatever... I'll listen to and enjoy both while those oh so much wiser than me critique them and voice their opinions, ever the contrarian and critic. 😂

@@daved6762yes! I saw this show 2x during the Earthling Tour in Orange County CA. Great both nights. They traded off headlong these shows.
Seemed more NIN younger fans. When Bowie came on they got schooled. Bowie always wins over his audience. (Seen him since '75 Spider's tour). The 2 of them together was an amazing experience. Especially moved by Hurt! NIN fan too.
I was kinda surprised and pissed at their silent reaction. Clueless. A lot of them left. Oh well they missed this performance.
Bowie was on it. Iman was below us on side of stage. My friend yelled "Iman, we love you". Bowie smiled at us. Took fam members. Figured not to be missed. It wasn't.
Best Mercury Rev lineup ever. Incredible drummer. I saw lots of concerts in my life abd this tour might one of the best I‘ve ever seen.
Why am I just finding this today? Deep respect for both and this is incredible
davids voice is perfect.
David Bowie's wonderful voice.
This duo resonates eternal
Wow this was beautiful. Been a NIN fan since Pretty Hate Machine came out but never saw this before now. Loved it. RIP Bowie.
Adrian Belew is an unsung hero here, crazy how he can play everything from funk riffs, animal/machinery noises, to the atmospheric tapping here and still sound unmistakeably like Adrian Belew.
The guitarist is Reeves Gabrels, not Adrian Belew. Look Reeves up, along with the facts of David Bowie's Outside Tour of 1995. (Adrian made his last tour with Bowie in 1990.)
Awesome progression - hearing the generational versions of this song from Trent Reznor/NiN, David Bowie and Johnny Cash. A great song containing some universals truths about the human condition, and the damage we do to ourselves and to others. This song will live on longer than ever expected when it was first written.
I never tire of watching this.👩🎤
People will hate me, I appreciate Bowie as an artist but was never into his music because I personally was never touched by his ways of singing and performing. But supporting Trent is shifting my perspective a little bit. And it's nice to see Trent grinning and happy. Must be an amazing experience to sing along with a legend and hero. 💚🎶 Nice move, Bowie. RIP
Simply, SPECTACULAR...
The voices, the music, the melody...
Thank you, for your music and thoughts, Eric Watson Sr
I cry.
Chilled to the bone... amazing musicians
Just wow. Incredible collab
Wow. Super. Two of my all time favorites together.
Of all of the versions of this song I have heard this is by far the most powerful. Thank you for posting this video. It gave me chills
One of the most amazing things I have ever seen.
Truly amazing!
Trent is one of the most talented musicians alive… and Bowie is one of the most talented musicians that are not - much to the regret of the world...
St.Louis Riverport 11/10/95
The Entire Crowd LEFT when Bowie came out to do his Headline Set. It went NIN, collaboration songs between them, a break, then Bowie. The entire venue left 99%, gone, Me and my date, tripping shrooms, And my friends we're just stunned, to this day I have no idea why.
Yes I hear loud and clear great show man
Just one more listen…
RIP David Bowie. So great. What an amazing concert. These two together is just great.
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
:( RIP Mr. Bowie...
This tour and performance was actually in 1995.
Sick, dope, whatever. Those 2 are legends. ❤
