The fact that this man can sing this song with as much heart, soul, and passion in his early 50s, as he did when he was in his mid 20s, is the sign of a man who is a true artist, and a man who knows true pain.
Yes after a struggle making a difference, living abroad I just lost my 15.5 yr old traveling British Golden Retriever. So much pain I can't describe the pain.
Rich Dupe whether or not it was a good thing that he said, he had good intentions. the original lyric means he is still in a bad place with his addiction. but he isn’t doing heroin anymore, so i don’t think the guy in the crowd meant it that way. maybe like a “you’re still here, you survived”
“I’m still right here..” , “YEAH YOU ARE!” That man in the crowd shouted hope to me. Just saying I’m still here and someone saying yeah you are just pulls you out of that pit
So amazing to see the early times when Trent was in the grip of Heroin singing this song, to this performance when he was totally clean and sober.... what must he feel when he revisits this mega-hit of his insane days and now sings it sober?? Very, very few climb out and away from the pit of death that drug promises... I’m glad he made it
He wasn't on heroin when he wrote this song he git his addiction while writing the fragile he said it ironic because his life ended up imitating his art
Trent wasn't on heroin. He was an alcoholic and addicted to cocaine. In fact, the first time he had heroin it was because he had it confused with china white, and almost died after consuming it. That's when he decided to turn his life around.
Also take away this stigma from Heroin and drugs in general this BS society has tried to push on us. Everyone is different and likes different things ! MAYBE if people weren't shunned or put down because of things they do or how they feel, they may come out better. Now not speaking for the ones that harm others, or puts their family at risk etc etc. That happens on any drug and its not the drugs fault that person was just shitty to begin with 100% Anyway my point is take away this BS stigma from society and open your mind.
I couldn't bear myself to finish this song, i mean i was able to finish it the 500 consecutive times i repeated it, but the 501st time, I had guests coming over... so we restarted all from 1
As simple as the piano notes are, it really is what makes this song that much more sad to listen to. The power of less is more, and just how solemn that instrument is during the chorus. Trent really was such a phenomenal writer when he did Broken and The Downward Spiral.
I caught the live stream of this concert. I got fucking chills when Trent sang “I am still right here” and that dude replied “yeah you are!”. So glad the cameras caught that. I hope somewhere somehow Trent himself heard that man.
This song has a special place in my heart. It’s therapeutic. I know friends who go through different hells...as crazy as it sounds, at times, this song allows me to feel their pain and let it out.
To think when he was a young man and wrote this song and what he was going through. You are still right here. You are indeed. Thank you Trent. We’re not worthy.
DannyCockburn But you have to admit this is one of the most powerful songs of all time. His performance of this song in the Beside You In Time tour a couple years ago was by far his best to date, even playing it on piano. If only we got more live albums..
That's a very bleak way to look at this. That songs is what - 25 years old now? And he's still here. I'm not sure he believed that when he wrote it. I hope he perceives this as cathartic and I hope he isn't singing it into the void, I hope he the crowd's emotional investment matches his own and gives him something back.
hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on my pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything What have I become? My sweetest friend Everyone I know Goes away in the end You could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt I wear this crown of shit Upon my liar's chair Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here What have I become? My sweetest friend Everyone I know Goes away in the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt If I could start again A million miles away I would keep myself
The passion in this mans heart for his music it is his soul the pre chorus is one of the most beautiful transitions from a dissonant dark haunting melody in the verse with lyrics of nihilism and suffering to an uplifting drone with honest lyrics of needing to reach out idk idc thats how i see it its just musically this song is brilliant i love it.
You can listen to this song any day, any month, any year. Through your toughest times and your easy times and somehow be able to relate this song to your life. If worked for me. I used to be bullied a lot in school and this song is what helped me get through it. I know this song isnt about bullying but that's an example on how I applied this song to me. Thank you Trent
All the people may have watched an amazing piece of music played on Gods green earth. God, I wish I was there. The whole performance was absolutely beautifull and perfect. Trent Reznor, there will never be one talented person again like him.
It’s so interesting now more than ever growing up with this amazing song and to hear him have that same intensity as he did when I was 19. Its a mind blowing and still I get it and feel it just like I did then! He means EVERY word of Every song! To watch this now from 2017 gives me chills regarding the sound now compared to then! We were a generation that had a right to a voice regarding our future. A future that we all knew was more than likely that even with college, we’re most likely not going to do any better than our parents. The American dream for generationX was out of reach and NO ONE was listening. Grunge/punk/industrial is a great example of this kind of hopelessness. And it’s this lack of hope we’re this music blossomed. I think it’s systemic as this generation maybe for the first time after the Vietnam war realized that we are perhaps not the greatest country in the world and we felt powerless of this. Just my thoughts…
God, after 1/6/21 this song brings it home and makes so much sense. This helped me back in college in the early 00’s and is helping me now understand and realize that we need to be for one another. God Bless, Trent and 🇺🇸
The level of talent, musical genius, and ability to so beautifully, painfully and honestly put the awful things he was going through into masterpiece level song as he did, that my friends is the Statosphere level type of talent that one musician in a millennium, maybe longer even, actually possess. He's a true musician, a warrior poet, a truly Grimm Reaper... That's my opinion anyway. And to top it all, he was horribly addicted to what many call the most devastatingly destructive substance in the planet, and somehow he didn't fall victim to the infamous "dead at age 27" fucking curse that has claimed SO MANY of our best and brightest rock stars for decades and millennia. I'm not a giant fan of their/his entire catalogue, musically speaking, but as a learned musician, I must say that Talent recognizes Talent in the same way that tragedy begets tragedy. Johnny Cash felt such a strong emotional reaction to this song that he famously covered it. In fact, in years since, I've realized a LOT of people thought it was a Johnny Cash song. And I enjoy his rendition, but it pales in comparison to Trent. I think so anyway. But I digress deeply. My point, TRENT is a mad genius. I'd comfortably compare him to a Mozart or Chopin type. I believe he's that good, nay great! Long may he reign!
2/7/25. This is one that goes for eternity. 47 now and can’t imagine being 87 and ever turning this down. Any of the versions work. This is a good one though. True awesomeness is being that dude who yelled “yea you are”. Dude that gives me the chills

Brilliant but terrifying observation. I agree.
makes me cry
He really feels it deeply. The audience gets there too.
It seems he went from wild and self destructive 20's to understanding the Johnny Cash vibes in his later years
@@druno82 what are you on about? he's been doing this track the same way for decades
The end of that first verse tearing him up like that... Holy shit. We love ya Trent.
Daniel Selberg ikr? He puts a little bit more into the song every time they perform it!
1:55 the metamorphosis of pain into beauty
2024 this song still brings me to tears
Same
Yes after a struggle making a difference, living abroad I just lost my 15.5 yr old traveling British Golden Retriever. So much pain I can't describe the pain.
That 'yeah you are!' from the crowd, epic.
That actually made me tear up... I thought that was very special...
We all are.🍄💀
I disagree. If anything he has no clue what that lyric actually means. It's in no way a positive.
Rich Dupe whether or not it was a good thing that he said, he had good intentions. the original lyric means he is still in a bad place with his addiction. but he isn’t doing heroin anymore, so i don’t think the guy in the crowd meant it that way. maybe like a “you’re still here, you survived”
hahaha yesss...
Addiction + depression tears a hole in your soul.
This is one of the rare youtube videos where people are actually discussing the song and performance
Probably because of how important it is to the song and the person singing it
YEAH YOU ARE
Oh my god I love that profile picture
"YEAH YOU ARE!"
Fuck, I cry when the guy shouts "yeah you are!"
“I’m still right here..” , “YEAH YOU ARE!”
That man in the crowd shouted hope to me. Just saying I’m still here and someone saying yeah you are just pulls you out of that pit
One of the most powerful performances ive seen trent singing this clearly is painful hes an incredibly gifted human being
WOW he struggled thru that, with all that emotion. He has battled thru serious hard times.
EPIC SONG
ooohh that 'yeah, you are' hits deep
Wow. He sang this smoother than when he did in his 20s. So smooth!
“If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself , I would find a way” 🔥

He wasn’t on heroin dipshit. Might want to check up on your history before you start saying that
When music was music
I couldn't bear myself to finish this song, i mean i was able to finish it the 500 consecutive times i repeated it, but the 501st time, I had guests coming over... so we restarted all from 1
@4:10 gives me straight up chills.................I wonder if Trent has seen this and what he thinks about this performance!!!
This is the definitive performance of "Hurt".
a legend in his own way
A legend.to many
This song has gotten me through some really really dark times. I will forever be grateful to Trent and the band.
As simple as the piano notes are, it really is what makes this song that much more sad to listen to. The power of less is more, and just how solemn that instrument is during the chorus. Trent really was such a phenomenal writer when he did Broken and The Downward Spiral.
Yes the piano is haunting.
I caught the live stream of this concert. I got fucking chills when Trent sang “I am still right here” and that dude replied “yeah you are!”. So glad the cameras caught that. I hope somewhere somehow Trent himself heard that man.
I was there, and it was magic
This song has a special place in my heart. It’s therapeutic. I know friends who go through different hells...as crazy as it sounds, at times, this song allows me to feel their pain and let it out.
To think when he was a young man and wrote this song and what he was going through. You are still right here. You are indeed. Thank you Trent. We’re not worthy.
For me its the most emotional Performance of this song i ve ever met.....i am still right Here......
it must be so hard having to relive such a low moment in your life for others entertainment. I feel for the guy
my friend, that's when trent sings "something i can never have"
Not when you can turn it into gold like this.
DannyCockburn But you have to admit this is one of the most powerful songs of all time. His performance of this song in the Beside You In Time tour a couple years ago was by far his best to date, even playing it on piano. If only we got more live albums..
He isn’t doing it for others entertainment,
he did it to relieve those emotions. That’s what art is.
That's a very bleak way to look at this. That songs is what - 25 years old now? And he's still here. I'm not sure he believed that when he wrote it. "Yeah you are!"
I felt that
"Yea you are" he shouts out LOUD!
hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on my pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of shit
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
Best song ever written…I said it.
@4:09 IS EVERYTHING............
I lose it everytime
Wish i were the "yeah you are" guy lol...
No
Wow...damn. it still gets him every time. Gets me too.

I think the best version of Hurt"s 9 iInch Nails
This could easily be a song from the people of earth dedicated to mother earth.
I am not into the band basically know 1 song but damn just damn. Absolute masterpiece of angst
What have I become?
This is not just a song
This is something else
2:00
The Cash Version is wonderful but the pain aspect hits deeper in the original... I REALLY feel the deep level of pain here!
This is one of few songs I would consider to be perfect.
Being a talent and living with dark depression. I get the empire of dirt. Nothing ever fulfills, it’s just not possible for some.
Thank you Trent

....full of broken thoughts i can not repair. ....ya the'yeah you are 'really makes my tears explore in my wet eyes

still great, still special....nine inch nails are a alltime fave.
Those few seconds before starting, Cash must have passed by his brain, with a smile.... You can do it again.
What are you talking about…cash covered the song it’s not his
