@ɮօʊռċɛ օʄʄ it's about self-hatred and obsession, TR mentioned, I think. Of course, drugs and sex can relate to these topics, but they're not what the song is about, exclusively.
@@leslieswiman7297 Well, that’s not really the case in this sense. The album is about his downward spiral. Hence the name “The Downward Spiral” and the entire album is about his self hate and him using her as an escape, and using her body to control himself. The line: “You get me closer to god” is literal, in the sense that he is suicidal and him using her just gets him closer to killing himself. It’s nothing about love, it’s about hatred, and shame, and all the bad things about himself.
Can't believe I've made it 20 years of my miserable existence before finding this incredible band and the incredible album that is 'the downward spiral' 💯
Dude same. I started listening to NIN in early 2018 and i can't believe how i didn't heard of this band before. They are actually my favorite band but also The Downward Spiral is my favorite album of all time.
3:38 Aaron's guitar playing is the coolest in the world. I saw NIN live in Japan on May 20,2007. At that time,I was very influenced by his play.Thank you.
This is the best song ever written, lyrics, music, everything. I saw them in 94 at Maple leaf Gradens in Toronto, Canada. Closer was the encore, beat playing in darkness for minutes.....Manson and Jim's sideshow circus opened. Best concert I have ever seen..PERIOD!!!
I love the transition in 3:28 I mean the bass is sooo amazing Im digging this version. Freaking badass. "I want to feel you from the inside." Oh,hell, yeah.
Whoever decision it was to interpolate The Only Time in place of the original break basically reinvented the song for the better! This arrangement still persists to this day!
The lyrics. The sound. This album - The Downward Spiral. Galaxies, aeons and epochs ahead of its time. Beautifully mesmerizing! Trent deserves a knighthood for his plethora of artistic contributions not just to the music industry but film too. Never gets old. So uplifting. They inspire.
The Downward Sprial is a concept album about a man who kills God and pays with misery, suffering and death. Closer is the point in the album where he realizes something terrible is happening.
Every time I listen to this I cannot control my urge to rock out and by the time the song is over I have to find and retrieve my glasses from my massive headbanging/air-guitaring. This song is truely one of my favourites. :D
I confess that I actually happened to hear this Nine Inch Nails classic earlier today via a local radio station app, though in the case of probably other multiple music listeners hear I was actually introduced to the radio version of this song from later in the evening Mtv watching as a 90s teenager, this live version of Closer definitely does justice to the radio version of Closer in a novel way .
I don't really care why he originally wrote it. If you're into "messed up" or "weird" shit, its an appealing and sexy ass song. Even if you're not, the song's beat and the way he sings it makes everyone think about sex. So those of you out there insulting other people because of they way they interpret his song can smd
The lyrics to this song get a lot of the attention but the main jist of it is the weird hypnotic beat. This song is demented and absolutely amazing
MC MLee I agree!
Me too!
Oh yeah!
yes indeed
Isn't it a sample from eurymythics or one of those 80s electro bands?
Trent Reznor is one of the most underrated musicians ever. He puts everything into his music. Amazing talent.

so true
Absolutely!!
try the woodstock version . definitely better in energy and mixing
The guitar inclusion between verses elevates this song so much
Woodstock is even better.
fucking Christ this version is intense. gives me chills every time.
I've seen it live later, but I want an experience like this.
I think the song sounds so much better with big Trent's (IDK how else to describe it lol) deeper register

It’s the synth line from the song “The Only Time” from Pretty Hate Machine.
