It’s true, in the US, at least, CARS is a huge song and has a lot of meaning because cars, vehicles, etc are a true cultural love affair. Especially here in Detroit, cars are treated like family members.

I love how totally physical Gary is while performing this at age 51 versus when he was 21 and released it. As if the pale robot we met in 1979 was turned into a warm blooded human.
It takes a ton of practice and someone to plan the whole thing out for the cameramen to get that close but not run into anyone or mess anyone up, so for most performances it just won't be worth it.This was clearly something special and they knew it so they invested the extra time and money.

It was all because of Trent... and for the record, Gary's new music is amazing.

I turned 39 this year and began sulking and feeling sorry for myself because I felt *old* . To see Gary rocking out like this in his 60's shows that age means absolutely nothing and it helped me snap out of my melancholy!
I saw him in Portland, OR a couple of months ago... he's 65. Swear to god he's even better. That motherfucker is a sicko in the best way. Hang in there Toni Marx, it gets better!
I'll be 40 in March and remember singing this when I was 7. That and Sweet Dreams. Growing up wise my life was fucking horrible. Musically though.. Oh my God it was like paradise. I was there, it was the highlight of the whole show. Loved Numan since the 80’s and NIN since Closer. The two combined was just epic. The recording doesn’t do the atmosphere justice.

I seem to recall in some documentary, Gary saying that Trent had arranged this and that he wanted "Cars" as part of the concert. Garys first thoughts were "Oh god, not again", as he was getting sick and tired of having to do that song at every concert. But he thought "What the hell, one last time"... ... and he wasn't expecting that crowd reaction.
Gary went in for a handshake, Trent went in for a hug. That. That is wholesome content right there. The man who made wish, last and terrible lie is giving someone a hug.

Apologies if I've commented before, but that's how damned good this is...the perfect fusion of the harder NIN sound and Gary's original. Every member of NIN in this performance was rock solid but not once tried to steal the show or take the spotlight away from Gary. THIS is what showing respect to a legend looks like...having his beloved Polymoog on stage was the very definition of "class act". I never get tired of watching this.

It's 2024 and I keep coming back to this performance. There's so much to see like Gary's wonderful smile and enjoyment, the drummer absolutely killing it, how tight knit NIN is, the perfection of it all. This ranks up there with Hearts tribute to Zeppelin and AFI's tribute to The Cure playing "Just Like Heaven".
Yes, excellent! At first I admired the quality and observed the movement but when it ended I realize I was just living the moment, the camera was transparent. Great mix on this audio, too!

Gary made this masterpiece...and was afraid the techno aspect would not be recieved well....he could not have been more wrong in the best way.....this is timeless.
People have rightly pointed out "the smile" at 0:24 which is the highlight of the clip but I love the moment between 0:11 and 0:16 where the camera person is, rightly realizing that the drummer is Animal incarnate but then realizes that the crowd is just coming over the top of that. The swing from the drums to the crowd is an acknowledgement that something special is happening. That crowd has the feeling we all crave in the the audience. A unified expression of collective joy.
Gary cant hide the smile on his face when the song hits and the crowd goes bananas ...songs well over 40 years old and to get the same reaction as it did when new is a testament of a true artist like Gary Numan...
I remember when this song was new, and the reaction I got for playing it was getting my ass kicked. There was a hot war going on in music at the time, hell, 50 thousand people nearly burnt down a stadium because they hated Disco. People were seriously feeling threatened by the changing trends in music and some were violent about it.
Damn, the mix is f'n perfect! You can clearly hear every instrument at all times, but somehow each one gets fills and silo moments. Chef's Kiss to this recording!
Two things I always love about this footage. 1 is when the beat drops at the beginning and just seeing everyone jumping up and down in unison always makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. 2 is at 0:56 seeing Trent just WORK and put all his energy and focus into the music.

It’s so beautiful to see Trent pour 100% of his musical talents into that tambourine for this one. Zero ego, just one musician making another sound better. He just backs off and lets Gary steal the show with his baby. These guys are all true professionals.
If I had a pound for every time I've watched this. Possibly commented on it before. A band totally on it. A legendary icon and one of his most iconic songs. And a shoutout to the cameraman who does his job so perfectly without getting in the way. Really gives us the feeling of being there.
Stumbled upon this a while ago. And somehow I keep coming back to it over and over again. Maybe thats just because it utterly kicks ass! I'm drawn to the way Trent goes to town on that tambourine.

I adore how happy Gary looks when the crowd goes nuts during the opening notes. One of my fav songs.
I seem to recall in some documentary, Gary saying that Trent had arranged this and that he wanted "Cars" as part of the concert. Garys first thoughts were "Oh god, not again", as he was getting sick and tired of having to do that song at every concert. But he thought "What the hell, one last time"... ... and he wasn't expecting that crowd reaction.

Apologies if I've commented before, but that's how damned good this is...the perfect fusion of the harder NIN sound and Gary's original.
Every member of NIN in this performance was rock solid but not once tried to steal the show or take the spotlight away from Gary.
THIS is what showing respect to a legend looks like...having his beloved Polymoog on stage was the very definition of "class act". I never get tired of watching this.

It's 2024 and I keep coming back to this performance. There's so much to see like Gary's wonderful smile and enjoyment, the drummer absolutely killing it, how tight knit NIN is, the perfection of it all. This ranks up there with Hearts tribute to Zeppelin and AFI's tribute to The Cure playing "Just Like Heaven".

The cameraman is Rob Sheridan who started as a fan then later on did the graphic design work, music videos for for NIN, HTDA. Recorded with his Canon 5D Mark II. (Oh yeah it’s in the description)
Gary made this masterpiece...and was afraid the techno aspect would not be recieved well....he could not have been more wrong in the best way.....this is timeless.

People have rightly pointed out "the smile" at 0:24 which is the highlight of the clip but I love the moment between 0:11 and 0:16 where the camera person is, rightly realizing that the drummer is Animal incarnate but then realizes that the crowd is just coming over the top of that. The swing from the drums to the crowd is an acknowledgement that something special is happening. That crowd has the feeling we all crave in the the audience. A unified expression of collective joy.

I remember when this song was new, and the reaction I got for playing it was getting my ass kicked. There was a hot war going on in music at the time, hell, 50 thousand people nearly burnt down a stadium because they hated Disco. People were seriously feeling threatened by the changing trends in music and some were violent about it.
Damn, the mix is f'n perfect! You can clearly hear every instrument at all times, but somehow each one gets fills and silo moments.

Two things I always love about this footage. 1 is when the beat drops at the beginning and just seeing everyone jumping up and down in unison always makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. 2 is at 0:56 seeing Trent just WORK and put all his energy and focus into the music.

I love everything about this! The pure joy radiating from Gary, the POV from the stage, Trent playing a supporting tambourine role, the nostalgia for my teen years...
It’s so beautiful to see Trent pour 100% of his musical talents into that tambourine for this one. Zero ego, just one musician making another sound better. He just backs off and lets Gary steal the show with his baby. These guys are all true professionals.
