It’s actually a song about a person trying to find the next fix of H. It’s driving him crazy all day and then he gets his fix and it almost kills him. He’s ok with it at that moment, he’s ok with dying because he’s completely addicted and doesn’t want to chase the dragon anymore.

What an unexpected and delightful surprise. I haven’t seen this full video since it aired on MTV years ago. I’m so glad Trent finally decided to share it here despite it not being a song that he has historically liked. It’s a masterpiece of raw emotion meticulously articulated.

For the longest time he was embarrassed by it. But he's come to like it in recent years. In fact I believe he's finally played it a few shows.
When music was all about, now stupid collaborations are killing all. Collaboration like s*it. Why need collaborations? Forgot. To make money. Shi* again.
A thumbs up just isn’t enough sometimes. This is perfection. Every single frame is like a master’s painting. Mark Romanek directed this video, he also did the remarkable Closer video and the beautiful movie One Hour Photo with Robin Williams. The Perfect Drug video budget was some insane figure in excess of $800,000. The rooftop set, the ‘freezer room’ set and the large hand sculpture all ate large portions of the budget. But sometimes large budgets are given to the right people who create greatness. For the video Romanek was inspired by the artists Edward Gorey and Gustav Klimt. The large painting somewhat resembles ‘The Kiss’ by Klimt. The video’s narrative (presumably) follows a grieving man’s descent into madness haunted by a child’s specter. Together with vampiric themes and the Absinthe trip reminiscent of Francis Coppola’s Dracula which was still strong in peoples consciousness at the time. I was around sixteen when this was released. It struck a strong chord for me. I couldn’t believe the beauty and power of the song/video combination. Still feel the same all these years later. Today I’m thankful to have been growing up when this timeless piece was new. Every so often I come back and re-watch this video. Always look forward to the scene at the end with Trent gazing mournfully out the window with a greyhound resting on his knee and the child figure looming above. Accompanied by the song’s gorgeous outro. That image is so strong for me. I know Trent wasn’t thrilled about having a video with a bloated budget, and I think he had a certain disdain for the song at that time too. But I hope he can look back now and see/hear this with a fresh perspective. I can’t believe anyone could see/hear this and not appreciate its beauty. Big kudos to all involved!
I love that the video is not about a "lost lover", but a "lost" child. A dead child and the pain and insanity of the memory; or a visitation? VERY Gothic. Amazing.

After the Downward Spiral, this was the only new NIN song for the next 5 years, which back then felt like an eternity for new material by Trent. I payed extra cash for the Rusty Nails bootleg compilations and interview CDs with Trent just to hear something new, but the Perfect Drug was still the only “new” original material I had from 1994 until The Fragile came out in 1999. I wore out The Lost Highway Soundtrack-Track 3, playing it over and over. In September 2018 I got to see him play this great song live for the first time ever at Red Rocks. The Perfect Song.
Trent may hate this video, but I think it is a sublime work of art.
I didn't know he hated it... :O But... why?! It's one of the best music videos I've ever seen!
@@qtandem The wikipedia on the song goes into it but basically, they had limited time to make the song and he wasn't happy with the results. Since it was attached to a major hollywood film they ended up needing to also make a music video fairly quickly and ended up with something "bloated andover-budget".
@@CameronMulder I believed Trent hated this song/music video because the song is about craving and taking drugs. (especially evident when the music builds up while Trent sings the chorus) and that Trent regretted doing such a personal song in retrospect since he's known for being a former drug addict
I thought it was because of the sheer amount of money he felt was wasteful for a video. Have to disagree on that though, it's one of the best music videos to me so money well spent in my opinion.
Trent hates everything. it's the trendy way to be.
Mark Romanek made a BRILLIANT work on this video, it’s as timeless as the own song.
I remember almost 20 years ago watching this for the first time on the Closure VHS and being blown away. Always loved the effects and aesthetic of this video.
Me in 2008 playing Rock Band: "Hey this song's really fun on drums!"
Me 15 years later hearing this song in Hi-Fi Rush: *"YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"*
So glad I found this song before Hi-Fi Rush came out, because when I heard it in the final boss I was like YOOOO LETS GOOOO!! Makes me more hyped up to fight the boss. Sadly I don't have a Xbox but when I do I'm buying Hi-Fi Rush for sure.
@@jmiyabi I mean, if you're buying a Xbox you're probably going to subscribe to gamepass anyway, so unless the game releases DLC until then, you won't need to buy anything
@@Colecionador7162 Well I can't get an Xbox rn anyway so I will see if they even do release dlc for it.
My daughter was sitting on my knee when playing and as soon as we got to this bit I threw her off as I knew shit was about to get real.
@@captainchuppachup everyone knows hot jams and epic gamer moments are more important than your children
I read somewhere that Trent hated this. I just don't understand. This is the most beautiful video and song. I have always loved this.
It was from a period of his life he later considered to be a bad period - substance abuse, ego problems. I suspect he considers this trite compared to some of his other work. I think it's fine, and I think this video is rather gorgeous. But artist's are usually much harder on themselves than fans. :)
@@railgap Amen
He rushed it under a tight deadline for The Lost Highway film and was uncomfortable this high budget music video came with something he wasn't very satisfied with
Yeah this song is awesome
@@mina_loi thats like saying "Its inappropriate to have a child in the same movie as sexual activity"
How, then, are we to tell a story which features children and sex??
Are we going to overprotect those who need no protection?
At no point in this music film was a child harmed or subjected to any inappropriate treatment.
When a child is used as a symbol they might be paired with any subject.
We can't be oversensitive or we are going to ruin storytelling as a medium.
Please don't be oversensitive.
Nobody is getting abused in this video.
I love the whole look of this video and feel of this song. Perfect. It has an Edgar Allen Poe/horror imagery to it.

I'm sure it really ties the room together.
the end of this song is absolutely beautiful..
Feel like this song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of indulging a bad habit or addiction, riding the high of it, then the depression that follows.
Fools you into thinking it's a song about loving someone so bad you can't live without them. But anyone with addiction experience will say this is a love song to something like opiates. I guess love addiction works too, but there's no reading behind the lines here in a song called "The Perfect Drug"
Je comprends cette chanson ...avec une femme qui me procure cet effet...si fort, dangereux, fou, passionné...je peux mourir sans crainte à présent car j'ai vécu cela...
Precisely in the video notice he's drinking absinthe a very strong drink
So my toxic ex gf, got it!🙃
Feels more like a showdown with a CEO with crazy cyborg enhancements.
Damn didnt expect to ever see this on RUclips

Why not?
I have no idea where these comments are coming from. I've never had a problem with this song on RUclips. And I'm talking 10 years ago even. Tho I know there are some that don't have the ending (or some that have it patched in from the audio) but still. It was always here.

I was shocked Tengo Gameworks added this masterpiece to hi-fi Rush for the final Bossfight what an absolute great song to add to a wonderful game 🤟🏻🤟🏻
The production design and visuals for this video are awesome. Still one of my favorite alternative tracks and videos from the 1990s.
True!!!
Cloudy skies + last chorus "take me with you" are so unreal... Big Love 🖤
Hi I recommend a song and video called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
I remember not liking this song the first time I heard it. Now it's one of my all-time favourite songs. Great lyrics, high energy, incredible drums, seariing vocals. And the ending. Wow.
♥️💖
The more we get older, the more it will be relatable and in fact it isn't merely a depiction of drug addiction but any kind of bad habits
Greetings from Poland!. The best music video of the 90s, maybe even of all time. I have loved it for 25 years.
What an unexpected and delightful surprise. I haven’t seen this full video since it aired on MTV years ago. I’m so glad Trent finally decided to share it here despite it not being a song that he has historically liked. It’s a masterpiece of raw emotion meticulously articulated.
Facts. This video was super hard to find. I think i have it on vhs somewhere. I was happy it was posted!
He likes the song I think just not the video. I love both lol
@@sachamiffy9774 Its the song. He felt like it was rushed. He only had so much time to write it since he was commissioned to do it for Lost Highway. And he was never satisfied with the end result. For the longest time he was embarrassed by it. But he's come to like it in recent years. In fact I believe he's finally played it a few shows.
this is not the full video :( its cut off at the end, does anyone have the full video please?! @jendaminnx maybe? :(
This is a MASTERPIECE, both musically and visually. love it.
@OofImDeadInside :/ it probably doesn't meet his standards...
I agree. The best percussion I've ever heard in a Rock Song.
As a Nine Inch Nails fan and an Edward Gorey fan, this was basically my absolute perfect video
When music was all about, now stupid collaborations are killing all. Collaboration like s*it. Why need collaborations? Forgot. To make money. Shi* again.
When music was all about (ABOUT WHAT GOD DAMMIT)
There are a lot of great collaborations out there you just gotta look (Trent & Atticus for example)
I think it’s hands down my favorite
Are you me? Are you my long lost twin?
Fun Fact: Goth originates from German culture😎
Absolutely right!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank You for this informative review, I thought they were going for a Poe vibe.
Oh yes, when Trent was a vampire.
I wanted to like this.. but it was at 69, I’ll just leave this here
So.. Since day one then?
Goth was just trendy back in the day. It has a dark elegance.
Wait.....He was cured!?
@@debbielawson4198 no, but he introduced The Cure
I love that the video is not about a "lost lover", but a "lost" child. A dead child and the pain and insanity of the memory; or a visitation? VERY Gothic. Amazing.
i think it is more about losing his inner child.
It's a horror/ghost movie and he just found out his great great great great great gpa is the killer. And that little girl is actually the wife. & He had time travel & around the world to pick up his inheritance.. but after dodging some bullets first. Probably one of the most impressively produced, exciting impactful songs I've ever heard. A great inspiration to me.

Remember being in high school in 1994 when The Downward Spiral came out. Listened to it on infinite repeat on my CD player. 3 years later this amazing song came out.
Thanks for this one song Trent that kept me going during that long stretch as a teenager between albums.

Everyone going on about Snape needs to realize when this came out this was totally Dracula.
Exactly. Francis ford coppola style.
And so? I mean, yeah, you're spot on correct, but are perfectly not allowed to make more recent comparisons? One time I was looking down at the street in front of my house from the second story, one day, and along came this individual who was shuffling along, dancing down the street; my first thought was “I would love to have what has made him so high, without a care, that he could dance”; it was a few minutes later that I saw the earbuds, and realized that it was just pure emotion from music: music is literally the perfect drug.
