To all the people saying it’s Johnny Cash’s song now and not Trent’s. It’s neither. It’s OUR’S. I love both versions but I prefer the original because of the changes in dynamics. It has much more life. It surprises you. The dynamics don’t change in the cover only the intensity and volume. Cash’s version takes what is essentially a pop song with dissonant, not radio friendly instrumentation and made people realize it’s beauty and value. I don’t know if I’m using the right terminology or not but you know what I mean. We should just be thankful that two artists so far apart in their generation and fanbase can bring people together. R.I.P. Johnny Cash.
I also like the original NIN version more, also for the reasons you named, and I find the original more "dramatic", meaning the impact of the lyrics. They also have impact when Johnny interprets them but differently - they are not coming across as so painfully final as in the NIN version - even just audibly.
Just telling my wife about when I saw NIN at Glastonbury. I wasn't a fan of them at the l the time but all my mates wanted to go along so along I went. It was probably the greatest live show I've ever seen. It certainly was up until that point. Thanks for the upload.
This is so old - but I listen/watch all the time. I'm a week into being clean from pain pills - and even though this song is about heroin, we all know how close both drugs are. I kicked a few times in the past and listened to U2's 'Running to stand still' a lot (another heroin song). I'm not writing anything brilliant here, but I can't help writing about the brilliance above. And, I liked when NIN was a bit more scary, like at the time of this video. The bass player's dystopian look - from 2000, mind you - was way ahead of its time. It's, like, now. :)
Aaah I remember this day so well! Earlier on A Perfect Circle was on the same stage and then I had to stand through what seemed like never-ending fucking Moby waiting for this. Had something in my eye for the whole length of this song...have something in my eye again after watching this.
Thomas Simpson is in the uk have always had the absolute worst music and television presenters of music shows that are always with out question atrocious and literally know nothing about music .....bar zane Lowe loL
he often does this pained manic smile when he performs this song is he reliving some shitty things or in the moment of the pain at the time i wonder...
Look at the version at an event called "meltdown" he shows it more still in 2018, i think he lost everyone close at that time and it still really eats at him
Whatever the reason behind this song is It's for me. I suffer from fibromyalgia for 9 years now, all my muscles aches 24x7. I don't know what to do anymore, I'm 32 and I don't know if I want to live past 50
Another Excellent Live version as usual Thank you- Thank you Trent Reznor- Please come to NY or near area of Long Island or tri- State area for 2022- discovered you so late in life & that's my loss but I can make it up now but no car & financial & other big issues so l am trying for Ohio but it would be so challenging- unsure I'd make it & can't even afford it as of now but can get there near me-We Love you- Your an inspiration-So glad you're still with us & overcame so much & Still give such heartfelt touching performances
Trent Reznor was struggling with substance abuse at the time. Now he's 20 years sober and is a 55-year-old father to 5 precious children and has a pretty wife. 🥰
I was actually in the crowd for this, it was right at the end of a world tour and he was blatantly knackered and couldn’t be arsed. I was gutted. Also got my head split open by a flying glass bottle of piss (highlight of the weekend). Not a band worth seeing at a festival by any stretch of the imagination
One of the best songs ever written by man.
that would be Camptown Races
By Trent Reznor- Musical Genius & can write his true feelings & express his raw emotions Perfectly every time

I was there too and saw all 3 and enjoyed all 3 including Moby who was brilliant 🤩
honestly makes the song even more haunting with the poor audio quality
I remember watching this on TV and wanting to punch the screen when they referred to him as the Blair Witch of Pop.

he wasn't sober in "those days"

Fuckin great!!
Trent said this and i agree when Johnny cash sang his song he owned it.
I think they both feel the same hurt, Cash would have never sang it if Trent didn't feel it first.
