      I think any of us that cut grass regularly all have the same conversations with our mowers. Famous lawnmower words spoken the most to them are “Come on, come on, come on!!!” and “Come on, baby, start!!!”. LOL

    Your video is the best angle filmed, fast and to the point. I’m a Daddy’s girl that was taught how to fix a lot of car stuff (back in the day when you could actually get to a car’s components and repair them yourself) but never helped Dad with lawnmower repair. Midway cutting Mom’s grass last week, mine just stopped on a dime.
    I ordered a new filter, filter cover and plug in a kit. Truth be told……also ordered a new shut off/throttle cable because that one broke 3 weeks ago and I had to take the one off the Craftsman mower. It was a bit longer but has worked fine. I prefer my Yard Machine. It’s lighter to push and can get up to edges more closely, less need for trimming.

    Thanks great information****Incredible video! ****with some good knowledge shared. ***Thanks to this video I finally tossed an old bad batch of sparkplugs I'd been keeping. Just because they deliver spark on a tester doesn't mean they are good. Once the spark plug is in the ignition chamber and heats up, the internal resistor begins to fail due to heat and is unable to conduct electricity, resulting in the spark being gone.
    I noticed this anomaly as a fairly *clean** spark plug delivered spark when the engine was cool but would not start when the sparkplug was hot. I swapped out this bad used batch of old plugs and wondered why they only ran cold and would not run again after the mower warmed up, answer: because they were bad!
    Great knowledge, you 👏 earned s subscriber.

    Last year I was trying to get my old Briggs & Stratton mower to work, it's 23yr old. After changing gaskets on carburetor and swapping out the old foul oil, it ran straight away.
    I pulled it out this year and it turned over straight away, I let it run for a minute, thought great, it'll b good to go for morning for lawns.
    This morning... it would not start, well it did for a few seconds and then died. Changed the petrol as it does go foul but no joy, turns out I'm having exact same symptoms as you, it's the spark plug.
    Anyway, thanks from UK.

    i will try to explain despite a bad english lvl
    i sold a lawnmower last day and the buyer also brought me his old one (not too old tho 7-8 y old) and asked me to have a look at it
    a friend of him tried to repair it but replaced the spark with another one, more powerfull , telling him, it was better for the engine
    after 2 successful tries, the lawnmower engine stopped working
    what if i check the engine specs on briggs site and start by replacing the plug by the recommanded one ?
    might be the more logical first thing to do you think ?
    sry i hope you get the point

    A bad plug is probably the most common cause of a small, air cooled engine on a lawnmower, chainsaw, or generator, not starting. The other one is old gasoline, which has had the lighter components of the gasoline, which are the most flammable parts of the gasoline, evaporate away during storage. That leaves the gas tank filled with an oily liquid which no spark will ignite. They say the old gasoline has, 'lost its lights'.
    In very humid climates, the alcohol in most gasoline today will draw enough moisture out of the air to eventually cause a layer of brown liquid goo to form at the bottom of any gas tank which is vented to the atmosphere at zero pressure, like many small engines usually are. Every few years, I had to get a plastic tube and suck it out of my lawn tractor tank, before it could build up enough in there, to work its way into the carburetor. Now I use ethanol free gas from a local Chevron station. That solved the water accumulation problem. Since I don't drive much, I use it in the old Ford Expedition too. Better to spend a few more bucks on fuel, than get rust inside some expensive fuel injectors.

  • @alexfher00
    @alexfher00 Год назад +2

    After viewing your video, I'm left with the impression to go ahead and purchase a new plug and try it. So now I've driven to the store and spent the money. BUT what if it wasn't the plug, it was just "old" gasoline in the tank. Thought I was going to see how you actually TEST a spark plug before buying a replacement. All in all, informative.

    There is a reason why I order spark plugs in 10 packs for my small engine business.😉 Nothing worse than needing a spark plug and not having one. It's a good idea to have a spare brand new plug on hand for your mower. And don't forget to gap it. Smaller gaps are better around .025" is good for most mowers, especially Honda.

    • @patthesoundguy
      @patthesoundguy Год назад

      @@finders-keepers1518 I found the manual for that engine and it calls for a Champion RCJ8. The cross reference seems to be an NGK BMPR6Y or 6A. Which equates to Thead diameter of 14mm, thread reach of 9.5mm (which is very important as to not have a piston or valve smash the plug) and a non protruding electrode. I really think if you can't find that particular plug you would probably be fine with a BR2LM which is the Champion RJ19 mostly the same specs just a bit hotter plug and protruding electrode but same reach and diameter and more readily available. It's a bit taller plug so that could be something that may be an issue or not depending on the wire length. There is also a good chance the RCJ8 is easy to find.

    Do yourself a favour and purchase a volt/ohm meter and an ultrasonic cleaner if you do alot of mower carb. and ignition work. The meter will measure the resistance of the plug. The cleaner will super clean the plug deep to the bottom of the insulator and clean the carb parts to a pristine state.

    • @RaysLaughsAndLyrics

    • @markluxton3402
      @markluxton3402 4 года назад +3

      Yes, a faulty area that still makes contact...generally when cold. When warm the "crack" opens. Many plugs also have resistors inside for the current to go through. They burn out, sometimes a bit at a time. Personally I try to avoid resister plugs for my equipment. Easier to test a non resister plug with an ohm meter, though you can still test the plug if you know what the resister value is meant to be.

    • @markluxton3402
      @markluxton3402 4 года назад +1

      A coil can also give you similar symptoms. If there is a break in a coil wire, it can connect when cold, but opens up when warm.

    • @65csx83
      @65csx83 4 года назад +2

      @markhan I changed mine often when I was younger until I bought a defective new one. That's when I figured it was time for me to learn a more definitive way of diagnosing a plug's condition and when it should be changed. Presently, most of my equipment have their original plugs; some pieces are over 40 yrs old.. As long as it starts promptly and runs well I see no need to replace the plug.

  • @65csx83
    @65csx83 4 года назад +1

    Water in the gas tank, the mower's and a portable fuel container, is a feature of ethanol. I always check my fuel container before filling my equipment. The days of having a store of gas for emergencies is over; today's eco friendlier gas doesn't store well. You erred somewhat in your supposition of at what point in the analysis process someone would suspect the carb.

He called me the next day he would shut it off to empty the bag and it would not start would let it sit 30 min then it would start.He ran this thing before the tune up no problems. I still had his old plug went to his place ready to drop the carb bowel but instead put his old plug in ran the mower for 15 min way more than it would take to fill the bag.let it sit 5 min started right up. He is still running that plug 3 years later not going to replace it untill there is a problem. Pretty bad trying to prevent a problem causing one with a new substandard part there goes preventive maintenance out the window.
