These mowers were 79 - 99 bucks at the big box stores. They are now pushing $200 if not more. I always repair when possible. I have fixed equipment and sold or donated instead of trashing. Great video as always. 👍👍
$250-300. $299 at ace and home Depot. Lowe's dropped it down to $269 for the same MTD . The industry has been doing bad business for years. I blame excessively liberal returns, making too many different models and not fighting against regulations effectively. Also I guess running lean does increase horsepower but the government wouldn't let you play that up. Bull crap
Yes I was shocked. For years these bolt wheel 20" were $99. I bought one for the cabin at Lowes in 2014 and thought $135 was robbery. I walked past a display and that thing is nearly 300. I was wondering how you could really profit off a used one with two or three hours work even if you picked it up as free trash... as a fair price was likely $40 for a scratch and dent with worn blade...but now I see. You're likely charging $150.
Good little video. Yes I've done this "Redneck" repair just recently on my JD L110 riding mower. For some reason the fuel is not get.ting from the tank to the fuel pump ( been extra busy to troubleshoot it) so I had some extra fuel line and took a fuel tank off a spare push mower then hooked it up to the fuel pump and she fired right up and I moved my lawn with it 😂😂😂
Clean the emulsion tube inside the carb. There are quite a few great videos out there that explain how to remove, clean, and reinstall the emulsion tube. I had a similar issue on my toro turf master with a Kawasaki FJ180V engine. It would start surging after five minutes. Now it works great. Thanks for all of your advice and informative and entertaining videos 😊 I am referencing the Troy bilt mower that has a running issue when hot
Hmm. When younger I may have used a wire coat hanger to hold up part of my car's exhaust system as well as something to patch a hole in the muffler. I have no problem red necking something on a temporary basis. Great repair of this mower.

I have only made maybe 3 or 4 since I got it(lots of other brackets and whatnot but airboxes are a pain in the...)
Great video🎉 Thank you. Looks like they never changed the oil on it. It will take about a gallon of gas via 8 engine flushes to clean out that carbon and metal shavings in the oil reservoir. But it will be a great visual selling point having clean oil in the engine. It will give the illusion it was well maintained.
A true red necked repair I did ones was on a 72 Ford f 100 ,it had a 3 speed on the column ,the column pair of the shifter had warren completely out ,by the time it had warren out finding a new or used replacement was almost impossible so I cut a hole in the floor above the transmission and attach 2 shift handles made from the handle of a push lawnmower one handle could shift it into eather reverse or 1st gear and the other handle could shift it into 2nd and 3rd We used it that way for about 4 years entail the truck finally gave up the ghost that was in 2004 and it had over 300000 miles on it It 300 straight 6 in it
I did a creative fix on a riding mower. The deck was broken near one of the mounts. I do not currently have a welder, and the mower was not valuable enough to warrant replacing the deck. I took a deck support bracket from an MTD riding mower that I had in my parts stash, hammered it flat, and screwed it to the underside of the deck directly under the support bracket. It provided enough support for the deck to function until I am able to purchase a welder.
Oh yeah. Last winter I went to a friends house to look at a snowblower that was stuck in slow gear. He had used a coat hanger to try adjust the cable and made things worse. After removing the coat hanger and adjusting the cable the right way I gave him shit and advised him about using a coat hanger for repairs. I then left his house and went to his son’s house where the plastic console on his snowblower was cracked and left him with a reverse gear only. I had to ask the son for a coat hanger to make a temporary repair.
I just used jb weld to fix a crack in the deck of my mower. Not a rust hole, a flat out crack. Seems to be holding and while it appears to be fixed I’m on the lookout for either a replacement mower or a deck that will take my engine.

Choose wisely with 3d printers, cheap ones often can’t do high strength materials. Better ones can do rubber like materials and good strength materials. And high end can do nylon and polycarbonate which is basically indestructible
The one thing that comes to mind and just found the pic is using an old license plate as a bracket to keep the muffler on my snowblower. The cheap tin bracket, or the weld rusted and with a little bending and self tapping screws it's as good as new.
Yep that's my brother he really doesn't put any money in to his lawn mowers. I have his he let me have it runs its the 6.5 briggs engine i like them my dad has had a few of them run good if you change oil and use stabilizer and fog carberator before winter prime the fuel bulb and they fire right up every spring. My brother has had that mower for 8 years. Now he has my grampa mower wich is really nice. @@HomeGaragechannel also the air filter is falling apart and oil desperately needs to be changed it runs good but can run better. Y you so much for that! I went ahead and adjusted the vale’s to that spec, but unfortunately my mower still has hard starting. I know it is a fuel related issue as it starts and runs perfectly once it gets going with drill, starting fluid, etc. I realized that pressing the priming bulb about 15-20 times gets a good response from the mower, but the factory 3 presses does nothing (this only happens when the engine is cold, starts first pull when warm). The carb has been cleaned and all internal seals look good to me. I wanted to ask real quick about how this system of the bulb works (creating vaccum in carb thus pulling more fuel, idk). Also, what is the little white spigot on the side of the carb? I feel air come out of it when the priming bulb is pressed. I’m sorry for the long story/question. You’ve been a huge help, thank you!
the bulb "pressurizes" the carb and forces fuel into the inlet of the carb. That's how it primes the engine with fuel. The white piece on the side of the carb is an air vent. Have you done a compression test? If the test returns a "low reading" it would be the reason why it's tough to start.

That dishwashing sponge isnt a bad idea to get you by on a cheap mower if it sealed better. Soaking it in oil would help a whole lot more. I'm sure it filters better than a K&N since you can see through a K&N.
Yeah. If they had cut the dishwashing sponge to fit like an OEM air-filter, I'd have been more impressed. As an improvisation, the concept has merit. The execution fell flat, though. :-)

It sounds like she is reving a little high, there should be a spring hooked to a little metal tab. You can bend the tab to increase or decrease the rpms of the engine.
Primer bulb to prime the engine that plastic part is the carburettor well apart of it anyway alot of newer mower engines use similar style carburettors
I've picked 3 mowers with the same BS engine , I'm a fan of BS engines but these latest engines have issues valve seats dislodging the plastic carburators warp and the gaskets leak keys on the mower disk floged out pull cords frayed on sharp edges
As a matter of fact. When we first moved to Virginia Beach, we needed a lawn mower. So me and my dad went to Walmart and bought this (or a very similar) YardMachines 20" push mower. What died on it was the carburetor from the rain.
still some of us old timers don't have the ability to order online . parts can be much higher in a store . probably many people wouldn't even know the name of a part or what to ask for .
It wasn't on a mower, but I bought an old Oliver tractor to fix up a few years ago. It takes the cake for the worst repair ever. The previous owner had used a piece of garden hose to replace a hose on a hydraulic oil cooler. I'll let you make your own assumptions as to how well that worked.
@@HomeGaragechannel It happened to me! I promised to mow the part of the lawn I was occupying. Didn't notice the cover was off and the filter was dangling until I went to lower the deck. Thankfully, it only ran unfiltered for like, 10 seconds.
Man it baffles me what are mower manufacturers thinking when designing mowers? Like for example you have the company Ryobi made a battery operated riding mower that used Lead Acid batteries which are the same kind of batteries that a car would use and now Yard Machines designing a mower without an easy way to do height adjusting.
I have a toro snowthrower I think a ccr2450 I bought a new carburetor, paddles, scraper. I paid 20 for it and parts. Listed it for $150 some guy will you take $100? I don't even respond to that. I am not making a killing but they are loballing me
Hey i need help with my own project, im trying to fix my old tomos lawn mower from 1990 i got it to start but when i give it gas the engine starts to stall but in idle it works fine, do mind this is a two stroke engine
that's very strange, maybe someone adjusted the throttle cable, too much and when you're moving to a faster speed, it's moving the carb to choke. Take off the cover for the filter and the filter, and confirm that the choke isn't closed when you move the lever to fast.
@@HomeGaragechannel its all manual, throttle and choke, and im not applying throttle from the cable but from the lever on the carb its self, and i cleaned the air filter, its a metal one with a mesh so i can clean it in gasoline

I have a stihl fs87 and when I give it gas and want to mow it cuts out and when it idles the head in which the wire is turned also turns when I want to start it sometimes it cuts out please help
sure, replace the carb and the clutch
@@HomeGaragechannel okay that's not a good sing but its 20 years old so i think it's not worth it haha
I understand. It sound like you got good use out it
@@HomeGaragechannel Jup that's correct and i bought 2 new echo's so i have no worries haha 😂
Pretty sure it’s over-revving too. Can’t tell tho as I haven’t really worked on those mowers
Good ears, yes it was slightly then it's supposed to be. I did adjust it, later on.
I always keep spare parts from donor mowers and it always cuts down on replacement costs.
yes you are correct
Yes, that air filter was bin stock unfortunately, idk also eep spares dr myself
too😊
Just to add it. Sounds like it’s rpm sevens high?
yes you are correct, and I did adjust the engines speed, later on. Thank you Rick Thelian.
I broke the crimp on the low voltage wire to my automobile starter motor. I wasn’t at home but always carry zip ties. I zip tied the wire. It worked and got me home. Did I mention it was 4 years ago and I never made a permanent repair and am still driving the automobile?
wow that's pretty amazing!
here in Indiana we have lots of rust and humidity!
yes from what I recall of Indiana, I would agree.
It sounds like she is reving a little high, there should be a spring hooked to a little metal tab. You can bend the tab to increase or decrease the rpms of the engine.
yes you are correct. Good Ear. I did adjust the engine speed later on.
what is the red bulb on the air filter cover?
Primer bulb to prime the engine that plastic part is the carburettor well apart of it anyway alot of newer mower engines use similar style carburettors
I've picked 3 mowers with the same BS engine , I'm a fan of BS engines but these latest engines have issues valve seats dislodging the plastic carburators warp and the gaskets leak keys on the mower disk floged out pull cords frayed on sharp edges
interesting, I haven't had to deal with any of those issues, I wonder if it's a regional issue
Looks like MethGyver did the initial repair.
yes I think you're right
I'm not so famous for sketchy repairs as I am for making job site tools to get the job done. Maybe you've heard of my brand..."Snap Off"
LOL!!
My brand is, "Burnt Up." I think we're famous! 😂😂😂🍻
Float pin wouldn’t stay put- two bread twist ties wrapped together as the new float pin!
hey that's a good idea!
These were $70-100 back when I was around 7-9 years old. I'm 14 now and these are now up to $300
thank you for letting us know
As a matter of fact. When we first moved to Virginia Beach, we needed a lawn mower. So me and my dad went to Walmart and bought this (or a very similar) YardMachines 20" push mower. What died on it was the carburetor from the rain.
Atleast cut the sponge down an maybe use a metal hose clamp on filter cover if you didn't have the money
yes my thoughts too.
Zip ties? Nope, never. I don't know what you're talking about. I've NEVER used zip ties to fix things they had no reason being anywhere near! 😂
LOL!!
still some of us old timers don't have the ability to order online . parts can be much higher in a store . probably many people wouldn't even know the name of a part or what to ask for .
agreed
I mean... old sock with a hole in it cut up and sown onto itself to form an air filter.
actually the sock idea is even better! nice one.
I hope you changed the oil. It looked like it had never been changed. Also, it sounded like it was running a bit fast.
you are correct it was running a bit too fast. And yes I didn't show it but did change the oil .
It wasn't on a mower, but I bought an old Oliver tractor to fix up a few years ago. It takes the cake for the worst repair ever. The previous owner had used a piece of garden hose to replace a hose on a hydraulic oil cooler. I'll let you make your own assumptions as to how well that worked.
wow that was a crazy idea.
Dirt ingestion from missing/wrong/no air filter on a small engine will kill it pretty quickly. So the sponge was a poor attempt at best for a filter.
you are correct
Yeah I made a mulch plug that was questionable.
I've done the same but as long as it works, I won't question it too much.
you should make merch
I should shouldn't I!
Perhaps something in their shed snagged the air filter cover and ripped it off.
that's a very good possibility
@@HomeGaragechannel It happened to me! I promised to mow the part of the lawn I was occupying. Didn't notice the cover was off and the filter was dangling until I went to lower the deck.
Thankfully, it only ran unfiltered for like, 10 seconds.
yes that was good news
@@qwertykeyboard5901 sounds like a Honda... ? One I see often the filter cover hangs far off that side of the engine.
Man it baffles me what are mower manufacturers thinking when designing mowers? Like for example you have the company Ryobi made a battery operated riding mower that used Lead Acid batteries which are the same kind of batteries that a car would use and now Yard Machines designing a mower without an easy way to do height adjusting.
how long ago was that Ryobi mower? Must have been some time ago?
We are going to see a lot less on the curb. Especially any classics. Well hopefully we'll see better stuff new.
never mind it a primer .😃
you got it
I have a toro snowthrower I think a ccr2450 I bought a new carburetor, paddles, scraper. I paid 20 for it and parts. Listed it for $150 some guy will you take $100? I don't even respond to that. I am not making a killing but they are loballing me
agreed, don't let it go for anything you're not comfortable with.
Pulling rope kicks back 13:54
not sure what you're asking
When I pull rope it doesn't pull out and it kicks back really hard
if that was a car and a guy was doina a diy fix that would get them in trouble by osha or some sort of a dangerous issues.
sure would be
First
thank you Nicolas Lab.
@@HomeGaragechannel Hey i just wanted to let you know that i have fixed my tomos lawn mower and now its working very good
do a predator generator
I would if I could find one
why cant a single person show or tell me where the oil drain plug is on this?? u think u could show it.. geez
on this model, I don't think it has one. Tip back the mower and look near the shaft. There's a spot for a plug but it's not there... geez
@@HomeGaragechannel so how do I change the oil???? u have to siphon it back out??
you have to tip the mower on it's side, but using an oil siphon works well too.
