- Lawn mower won't start? In this video I'll demonstrate a 10-minute technique that will get running 99% of all Lawn Mowers that won't start. I fix mowers this way all the time, especially in the Spring after a mower has sat all winter with old fuel in the carburetor.

I had never taken apart a lawnmower's workings before. It's a Poulan 500e mower. After watching this, I dove in, and after finishing, the mower started on one pull. I was so jazzed. I yelled, "I have made fire!!!"
Great job fixing it yourself!
I was on the verge of buying a new mower but then I found your post, which enabled me to fix mine very quickly. Thank you.
Great job doing it yourself!!!
Bro thank you mate I'm from the UK I have turned this into a business just made my third repair in 8 hours
I don`t know anything about repairing lawnmowers. Tried what you said and basically the lawnmower started from the first pull. I`m very grateful - thank you!
Followed your steps today and my long-neglected baby started up on the first pull. Thank you!!!
First-pull victory! I love it!
Thank you! Life would be so much more difficult without people like you.
Thank you so much!
The most easy and clear explanations on this subject. Showing when it does start or only start for a feew seconds.
I followed your instructions step by step and I finally have my lawnmower working like it is brand new!!!
You saved me money by taking my time instead of sending it for repairs.
thank you!👍
Great job fixing it yourself!
wow... i run a lawn care business and i chit chat with the guys at the shop and they have told me about all the complicated stuff i dont understand... buck you just saved me thousands of dollars thanks brother!!!
Watched this video twice and not mechanically smart at all. Followed your steps and guess what? MY LAWN MOWER IS NOW WORKING AGAIN!!! I have had it for 18 years and thought it was time to trash it and buy another one! I was SO SCARED of doing something wrong during the repair because I'm not good with fixing things but your video made me believe I could fix it and I DID!!! You saved me $ from buying a new mower too!! THANKS SO MUCH AND GOD BLESS YOU for this GREAT video!!!
Great job fixing it yourself! Your note made my day!
Priceless. Fixed mine in 15 min. Even changed the air filter (used an aquarium filter cut to size, no spare parts around me). Pulled the bowl (dripping fuel, but so be it), cleaned it out, cleaned out the nut holes, re installed it all and bam! First shot. Thank you. Saved me hours and $$$ dragging it somewhere....
Great job doing it yourself!!!
Nice informative video for those who are just learning. I'm sure it will save someone money when they see how easy and quick a mower can be fixed. And you're right. 99% of the time it is just that easy to fix one.
Thanks, Larry!
I think it just saved me some money! I have a similar Craftsman mower with the same carburetor setup. It would start after many pulls, but it ran rough. I cleaned the carburetor as per instructions in this video. It started on the first pull after the procedure. My bowl had no debris and the fuel screw was not clogged.
Wow you're right! My mower is doing exactly what his was and it sat all winter. However I have an exmark commercial 30. I don't know the first thing about mowers. Where is my carburetor? I was literally going to bring mines to the shop tomorrow. After watching this im hesitant
Most of my yard equipment comes from the "curb" and I greatly enjoyed my equipment to this day!
Holy shit pickles! This worked like a charm. Thanks!
I was given a Craftsman/ Briggs and Stratton gas lawn mower that looks like it's never been used, it is less than ten years old. I'm sure this video will help me when I try to get it running!! Thank you very much!!
Very, very Informative!!! Thank you SO much fir doing what you do to help others save time and money!!! Bless you. 👍🏾❤️
Awesome job that the first thing my dad taught me when i started cutting gas at 11 year old. and we did not have ethanol gas back then.
Followed step by step just now and it started perfectly. Thank you for this video! This was last step before it got the garbage because we already put new spark plug too
Great job, Stephanie, doing it yourself!
😳😳😳😳😳😳 Thank God for dad's! Man code is a beautiful thing!
Uh-oh," toxic"

Great video, only wish I had found it sooner, could have saved myself a couple of blisters, the nut was blocked on mine, like a different lawnmower now.
Thank you Mr. Buck your solution to why my lawn mower ( a B/S model 90000 140cc) kept cutting off was absolutely correct. It's a very new lawn mower but sat a couple of years with a little gas in it. I looked at the other RUclips channels until I came across yours. I tried all of those suggestions except take off the carburetor. I was able to locate the fuel injector and put a fine pin into the hole, and then put it back together. And to my amazement, it started right up and stayed on. You're the best.
Good job getting it done yourself! Happy mowing!

Hello I wanted to say thank you. My friend's Craftsmen mower would not start. I had replaced the spark plug. I followed your direction and cleaned out the main jet and the mower started with no problems. Thank you so much.
Great job doing it yourself!
Just found your channel today. Liked and subscribed. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Now, I need to see if you have any videos on weed whacker and riding mower repair.
Worked for me. Thanks so much!
Thanks. I am going to try it.
I was frustrated with my Briggs and Stratton 625 series that won't start.
Followed your instructions and its working again! Thanks!!!!
excellent video. Many thanks! 👍
Thank you SO much. This worked!
Great video , thank you so much guy . Very informative.
Wow...great video. clear and easy to follow. great post!
Nice I was looking for a new mower, but I think I'll go try this first thank you so much !
awesome, Excellent!!!
Clear, concise and to the point. Great tutorial, many thanks...will be giving this a go tomorrow 👍
Thank you Buck.. your video makes it seem so easy. My boys bought me another mower instead of trying to clean out the carburetor. I'm going to try cleaning it myself when it gets cooler outside.
Yes. It's an easy job, especially on this particular engine. Good luck!
Worked perfect for me, thanks very much, was about to go looking for a new mower.
I tried it and it worked saved me. Thank you
Thanks for the video i will try that to my mower tomorrow GOD bless you!!!
What else can I say? Thumbs up!
I will certainly give this method a try, considering that my Toyota push mower has the same issues that your mower showed in this video. My mower is a Toyota HRA214 (circa 1984). This mower has been in the family since it was new. It is in relatively good shape, though I sent the carburetor out for a rebuild about 3 years ago. The mower ran great after the carburetor rebuild, but the next season it wouldn't start.
It is my backup mower, but I would like to get it running again. I'll be giving your method a try, considering that the mower currently runs for about 10 seconds with a blast of starting fluid before stalling out.
Thanks great info video bless u sir
I really enjoyed watching this & now I’m going 2 follow this same procedure.
that's pretty cool got a brand new mower now It looks good Thank you for the video
Thank you for making this video. It helped me to get mine running again. Feeling very blessed today!!
Great job doing it yourself!
Thanks 😊
Good video mate .. I use a micro drill bit on the jets .. that does a good job too.. ta for the video mate
Thanks, Mick! I find those micro bits helpful on Honda engines. Thanks for watching the video!
Hey Buck! As you may expect, my Craftsman lawn mower didn't start this spring. I fell on some video from sears, and it was BS. It was asking for specialized tools no ordinary people have.
Lucky me, after a bunch of other videos, I found your 10minute clip.
It didn't take 10 minutes to me, because I had to buy a new spark plug and air filter. They were 10 years old.
But with your help, with my ZERO background in gas engines, I FIXED IT. It was exactly as you described, in the carburetor.
So let me say a BIG thank you!!!
I opened myself a channel for newbies in electronics here:

And guess what? You have a new fan!

Thanks Buck! - this was exactly what was wrong with my mower. Also, it doesn't stall in the tall grass anymore.
Thank you so much. I am a female and just tried to get my mower running after about 4 years of non use. I had already changed the air filter and the oil and this in itself was quite something for me to attempt because I know computers, not small engines.
I was getting ready to do what you showed here because your instructions were so clear. I ended up being able to use a particular product (not sure if it will let me mention that here but the brand name starts with an S and the product itself has FF as the initials).
But thanks for this video. I would have stopped and hired someone at this point but because I was prepared to take that carburetor out and do what you showed here, you saved me a ton of money.
I stood in front of my garage with it running grinning from ear to ear.
Great job doing it yourself!
You are awesome man! This helped me 100%! Thanks for the video, time, and effort!
Good job doing it yourself!
Do the backflip, btw thank you. Got 2 stratons for 30 bucks, wanted to get them running and use one as a personal mower and turn the other into a go-kart cause it's 6.5hp other one is 6.25. this is dang the best video I found so thank you for the content I'm subscribing u fr making my small motor dreams come true
Great 👍🏾 an simple #Thanks
Thank you.

Your awesome. I have the same mower. I tore it down today cleaned it up. Removed any rust. Cleaned the carb and the bowl, the jets in the carb. Replaced fuel lines painted the metal where the free solution took the paint off. On my carb the choke lever was broken so I glassed the piece back on and shaped it. Still has the same symptoms you just fixed. You learned me I'm going go drop the bowl again now . Ty
Gas power over batteries any day! I worked on small engines most of my life and brings joy to my heart when a mower, blower or whacker kicks back to life! Enjoyed your videos!
Thank you.
Thanks for your time to make and share the video. STA-BIL Carb/Choke & Parts Cleaner from Harbor Freight also can be used to clean the parts. In another video I saw car brake cleaner was used.

I didn't even think about starting fluid thanks
Thank you! My Toro wouldn't start for my first mow of the season. It had started the first or second pull the last 8 years. Tried a few of the normal things and then some but once I did what your video shows it started on the first pull! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Great job fixing it yourself!
it worked, thank you for your video
Good job doing it yourself.
Thanks !
Thanks for sharing your experience, i got 3 of them and I am sure that this trick will get them going. Blessings
I'm hoping this works after I go get the cleaner, even with the old fuel. I have a Toro timemaster mower that I really like, but it's so hard to start. Last year I did the spark plug and new filter, and of course put the blue enzyme stuff in the fuel when it had to sit. Already did the lawn once this year, but now it briefly starts and stops right away. The filter and spark plug were the last time I used it last year. (My effort to DIY).
Hi any chance you could help with the governor spring ?. I have the same engine as shown in the video thanks
How often should I change the oil in my residential push mower with Briggs and Stratton motor ?
Check it regularly. Change it annually, like every Spring, and you'll be good to go!
That wos good
Can that corb work with a 6.5 mower
ALWAYS Run Highest Octane Premium Gas in all YOUR SMALL Motors .... INCLUDING WITH OIL .. I never have problems ..
Any chance u show us how to get the self drive wheels working great job with the carb
i put wrong fuel into my old Stiga Multiclip. it ran perfectly last season. but want start now.
I will try to fix this tomorrow with your awesome video! do you think your steps will help (considring wrong fuel)
i will empty and add new and correct fuel also
Thanks
Thank you so much, very kind of you! Buck

What good is having a Cadillac of a lawnmower, with a Pacer motor? 👍🤣 Companies know how to keep you buying, or paying for services.
There probably is only a handful of people on here who know what a Pacer even is.
They had a short life and quickly faded away.
Woooot wooooot
Buck! Help!
Ive changed spark plug, air filter, cleaned the carburetor, chrcked the fly wheel pin. Fuel is flowing when bowl is down, and shuts off when up. Clean bowl nut. What else do i try?
yay
I had to pay huge money to have my mower carburetor cleaned every spring, so I started buying a new mower every year because it's cheaper than paying someone to start it. I've watched tons of these videos. I'll be buying another new mower next week. (the last two I bought still have the manufactures tags on them) Too funny!!!!!
So just to be clear, every year you spend $500 for a new mower to fix a problem that could be solved with a 10-minute DIY repair?
Seriously? That's nuts! 😂
Repair is less! Makes no sense
So, did all the things and she still doesn’t work. She fired up with starting fluid. Just got it last year and it was leaking something awful from the bowl. Replaced gaskets and put it back together. Started fine. Didn’t leak.
Then it sat for the winter and now it won’t start. Cleaned the carb and jets and still no joy.
Any ideas?
It would bea good idea to try to start the mower before you put the air cleaner back on. If it didn't start you would remove the carb to clean all the ports, jets, etc. and you would already have the air cleaner off.
I have 2 mower that won't start. An really old Craftsman and a Troy Bilt TB110. The Craftsman has a really weak attempt to turn then it dies. The Troy Bilt last week I got to run for a few minutes then it died. Now it won't even do that. I've replaced as many pieces as I could. I don't think they're getting any gas. I've tried the drilling the hole technique but it hasn't worked. I put the hole just about in the middle and I'm wondering if it's too covered up to breath. I'm either going to make a hole lower or put a hole in the top of the cap. I bought new caps so destroying the old ones is no problem. If u have any suggestions please help. Thanks. My Craftsman did start when I shot carb fluid inti the carburetor. The Troy Bilt didn't. Yesterday I put 2 gaskets behind the air filter on the Troy Bilt and cleaned the bottom jet again and it didn't help. Also cleaned out both fuel tanks and did oil changes
I havre done this on my expensive TORO super recycler model 20057 that is close to 20 years old. This is a self propell one It was always inside between cutting my large lawn. Sadly my problem seems tp be more difficult to correct, than the one shown.
After cleaning the carburator , changing the air filter, putting new synthetic oil
1- It took near 20 strokes with a few times pushing the button to inject gazoline to start the engine without any smokes from the exhaust port.
2- After starting, I cut for more than half an hour, very tall grass with the bagger without any problems. The engine running great. The tunnel pushing cuts to the bag was totally jammed by the grass, and the the engine didn't show any signs something was bad with it.
3- Could it be bad a bad spark plug ?, or some electrical problems ?
Thanks for your help
Luke
The primer bulbs on these briggs engines don't always work very well. Bad design. The mower I used in this video doesn't have the primer bulb, but rather the automatic choke, which I much prefer. You can always "prime" the engine with a shot of starter fluid into the carburetor throat and skip that primer bulb all together. That's a bit inconvenient, as you need a 5/16" nut driver (or screw driver) to open the air cleaner and remove the air filter in order to shoot the starting fluid into the carburetor. But it works, and you'll probably start up on one or two pulls of the rope.
@@Buckwsr Thanks for answering my question, may I add that , I forgot to add that when the engine start sometimes I hear like a screeming noise or like the noise generated when you hit a piece of metal with a hammer. This sound can also last for a few seconds, before it vanished. Sometimes that sound is also when the engine is shut down (stopped) . Did you ever had that experience , and what is your feeling about it. This Toro after starting, can cut and bag grass that is over a foot hight without a glistch.
Thanks a lot again to care about all of us .
have a nice day
You forgot to say anything about the bowl gasket I’ve yet to take off a bowl and be able to get a used gasket back in place because usually it will expand and be bigger
How often are issues trash in the gas tank?
My lawn boy just died. 24 years never took more than 3 pulls even after sitting all winter. Never needed repairs. Il miss her
Ive cleaned carburetor
You can look up that commercial this very day!
Ricky got a mower running in 2 minutes when he was trying to become the assistant trailer park supervisor in Sunnyvale lol
Two minutes! A new record!
@@Buckwsr hey I’m impressed you recognize d the reference lol
I would have used compressed air to clean out that jet. If you use metal, particularly when you've got hard metal as on that pic plus a taper that gradually enlarges versus soft metal on that jet- you might enlarge the size of that jet.
ethanol fuel turns to varnish that restricts the flow of fuel and decreases the size of the jet hole. Air alone might not be enough to open it up.
my brother in law was going to throw away this exact same mower. will try tomorrow morning to see if i can get it running. im sure thats the problem. stay tuned.
“ at the end of my rope “ Thank you for your post very helpful. My problem with the craftsman all wheel drive, is it doesn’t have 30 hours in it’s life, got it started, got it running but now my problem is when I go too pull start, it’s jammed and I don’t know where the electric start charger battery Plug. When I try to pull start it just sticks so, @ short pull sticking point, @ just a few inches, I would pull feedback repeatedly, but it won’t let me pull it enough to fire it up. It’s like jammed, but I got the whole string @ its maximum capacity length but when I feed it back in, it won’t release! to let given enough pull to crank it, I feel like I’m at the end of the rope, but it’s not enough to get it going! Can you help? thank you.
I have other videos about repairing the recoil/rope starter, but not for this same lawn mower exactly. Either way they're all pretty much the same. I'm sure you will find some good info on YT. Good luck.
Yes you are awesome. I couldn't make the 10 minute bowl drain plug clean out, took 3 times then I'd find my torch cleaners and with a small enough wire id get it right. My bowl seal broke found a large ring cut it down threw some flexseal on it. Cleaned the bowl of any excess flex then reinstalled. Although now dark pulled the cord and it came to life. Immediately I could tell it's going to run. Thank you for teaching me. Being a poor man I do my own work and not sure why at 52 you were able to learn me and you did. Ohh yes thank you RUclips for having your platform last thing the free solution I was referring to in my last post was free-all a rust penetrant. I was dialed in on carb, maybe airleak, or idle spring missing , tried to find a good exploded view and noticed Craftsman wants 78bucks for a carb, it's mower 4 for me so no but ebay 22 bucks. That way was maybe, but your way some fluids and sprays and time ty
Good job fixing it yourself!
Is it normal for a Craftsman Platinum 7.0 horse mower to require several pulls when first starting? I do not have a primer bulb.
So, if there's no primer bulb, then your mower has an automatic choke system. When the engine is off and not warmed up, the choke plate should be fully closed. You can remove the air cleaner to verify this. If there is any debris obstructing the choke mechanism, clean is off so that everything moves smoothly. Assuming all is well with the choke system, you still might want to do what I showed you in this video to clean out the carburetor. If you do that, I'd say one or two pulls should be all it takes to get your mower running.
@@Buckwsr Thank you for the reply. I used your video to clean the jets and bowl. There wasn't any debris in the bowl, but I suspect I had water in the gas. After the cleaning it ran without surging and stopping after a few seconds of running. That problem appears to be solved. It has always had trouble starting when cold (since new). Once it is warmed up, it starts on the first pull. Otherwise it can take 4-5 or more pulls to start. I will look at the choke again, but I don't think it is closing all the way. Not being mechanical, I don't know how to adjust the choke.
My mower, (old Briggs engine), won't start unless I spray starting fluid into the carb. After that it runs great. If I shut it down to get a drink... or get rid of a drink, it'll start right up. However if I wait much longer, I need the starting fluid. Is this a main jet problem?
No. If it runs well once started, it's not a main jet problem. It might be a choke issue, if it has a choke.... Or if it has a primer bulb you press, maybe that bulb is not working as it should. I personally hate the primer bulb on some briggs engines. They just don't work. In which case, the starting fluid is now your new primer....
@@BuckwsrThanks for your quick response. No primer bulb. There is a throttle cable on the handle bar. I may tty to adjust that for more length and/or spray the linkage with carb cleaner.
Again, Thanks.
Tony
Okay well mine starts then goes weak and dies in like 15 seconds. Guessing it’s the carb that needs cleaning. Do you just remove the cover and filter (mines foam) then spray the cleaner in the throat like that? I’m guessing it’s a dirty carb, I’m not incredibly handy….
Well, before you dive into the carburetor, try something easy: Install a new spark plug. I have seen what you're describing go back to a faulty spark plug. Start with the easy stuff.
We were mowing , after I dumped all the grass from front , weed whacked, mower wouldn't start now ,plug is decent
The lawn mower is not getting spark if the carb is plugged would cause it not to get spark or start
Our mower is new just bought it it want start
Not getting gas when I prime it,,,,, and I already cleaned the carb plug? Would it be the main jet clogged?
The primer bulb set-ups on these engines are lousy. You're probably pushing the bulb, but it's doing nothing. The engine I use in this video does not have the primer bulb, but rather the automatic choke, which is a much better system. Try this: Open the air cleaner cover, remove the air filter, and shoot some starting fluid into the throat of the carburetor. If it starts and stays running, then it's not a clogged jet, but merely a primer bulb that isn't working.
@@Buckwsr ok and I lived the cable, good gas, spark plug and should I check out the flywheel?
@@alfrjr1283 Does it fire up briefly on starting fluid sprayed directly into carburetor throat? That's the first test you need to do.
@@Buckwsr I will have to get some when I get off work and I'll be sure to let U know and thank U for responding your awesome 👍
@@Buckwsr well I'm not sure what is going on with my mower and it's not even trying to turn over
My mowers don't have a bowl carb just bolts to gas tank.
Hopefully that's what's wrong with both my lawnmower carburetors
This method is called Prime for a Good time , was shown on U-tube 30 years ago by Daves farm .
Yeah, it's an easy and informative first step. "Runs and dies" always means carburetor issue like a clogged jet. 30 years ago? Not quite, since youtube was launched in 2005.... Thanks for the note.
Fifty years ago I would run a bottle of carb cleaner directly into my car’s carburetor to clean it. Would that work on a mower at the end of the year to remove the crud?
The issue would be the old fuel sitting all winter in the bowl of the carburetor, turning to gel and varnish, and clogging up the jet(s). A better option end of season would be to drain out the gas from the tank, and then fire up the engine and let it run itself dry. Then store the mower with no fuel in the system. Most of us, however, never get around to doing that with our equipment, myself included.
My lawnmower same this but it’s start slow for one minute after that run fast. And don’t start again i wait 10 minutes to start again
