Gary, The long exposure color boathouse screams quality, --hey man, yer hijacking' my style! Ditto the pilings under the angry-ish racing clouds. Ditto redux on the fence row receding into the lake, either one of those blows my skirt-up. Gutted-not ye be, as thine arse remaineth dry. Well trekked my tallish friend! The music! Love both the Euro-club beats and the celtish/wagnerish tracks. Thank-You, Mike
Enjoyed that Gary! The water level at the Boathouse was high. Visited in May and was able to get over the wall amongst those trees. But a couple were having their breakfast on the veranda of Boathouse, apparently you can rent it out! As for the Bothy, went for the easier classic shots down at Buttermere. Loads of shots at both ends and worth a visit.
Yeah there were a couple just leaving when I got there. You can rent it out for around £300 per night. It's always busy too. Somebodies making a bob or two out of the place! Photographed both places but re the Bothy... it'll just have to be third time lucky
Great vlog Gary, always look forward to your posts. Watched it last night came back to comment and it had gone! Fantastic images love the boat house with 10 stop but all fantastic. Thanks.
Hi Alan. I originally uploaded it but the video said I was in Derwentwater when it should have said Ullswater. A touch of muppetry on my behalf. Eagle-eyed Alan Coles pointed out the error of my ways :)
Another great video Gary. So far you are the only one to spare a thought and recommendation for the disabled among us who love landscape photography but are greatly restricted by disability. Hopefully others will follow your lead and suggest suitable locations from time to time. Look forward to your next video. Thanks. Best wishes John
Hello Gary, yes it was nice to mention that even the disabled can take shots for their portfolio, catch you later, keep it up, suggestion how about doing the digital processing end, just a short one, or even doing a critic of photographers images.
Hi Phil, Thanks 👍👍 I critique work all the time, it just doesn't make for a very interesting video. I'd happily critique your pictures if you'd like? This is my grown-up job by the way... www.shootsmart.co.uk
Again a great vlog Gary, so nice to see your enthousiasm on photography and your great pictures. Wants to make me go outside and shoot.. Tomorrow I will visit the Canon Experience Day in Brussels to get some motivation going again!
another great vlog Gary - I really love the long exposures, especially when there's a tree branch or rock in the water for the real ethereal look. Please keep them coming!
Another great video Gary, Totally agree with More is More when capturing images, thought your Sunrise shot at 21.50 was my pick, some good lessons learnt from this, always appreciate your tips. Thank you and sorry you missed out on the fish and chips.
Looks like you had Some amazing good to be out there moments, where the shots you took speak volumes. Also impressed with the balancing skills you have, can you do some more please. Great to see your work tonight Gary. Cheers rob.
Wernscale Bothy is on my bucket list too. I think you found Dubs Hut and the Bothy is about a quarter of a mile further on. Great video and good luck next time.
Gary, your images are absolutely stunning. I mean it. I always look forward to your videos and this one in particular doesn't disappoint. Love your vlogs and the superb, masterful images. Thank you for sharing them with us and for inspiring us. Wow.
Very cool video Gary, lovely shots at Derwent water. There are two picturesque locations near my home also covered in scaffolding! Roll on Summer 2018 hopefully all works will be done on time. See you next time Del
Great vlog gary. Stunning images just got to love those 10 stop images. I always learn something from you and thats what draws me into watching vlogs like yours
Awww...I'm blushing 😊 many thanks for the shout out Gary 🖒 I had that problem with Wharnscale Bothy.....bloody long hike up the hill from Buttermere toward the Slate mine ....
I love the strong sky/milky water combination shots. Just starting to explore landscape photography (fairly competent portrait photographer) and I wouldn’t have thought of doing that. Love your videos.
I just discovered your channel and it is fantastic! I have been in a bit of a photographic slump and your videos have inspired me to get out and shoot. One minor comment, What is with the dance music? OK got that out of my system! Looking forward to viewing the rest of your video offerings.
Consider it well and truly out of your system David :) Thanks for watching and I'm so glad you liked the video. I take it you didn't like the music then? I just thought I'd throw something a little different in that's all.
Great video. the locations are stunning and the images are awesome. I especially loved your long exposure / combined images.Absolutely beautiful. Great work
Another enjoyable watch and I had my fingers crossed for you walking the plank. I have a play way day next week and can't make my mind up between Ayrshire and the Lakes. Really like the fact you showed there are quite a few classics all within close distance so if the weather is right the Lakes might get the nod. You have cost me a few quid extra in diesel. Keep up the good work
It was a thin bendy plank, nothing to do with how heavy my backpack was :) Cheers Simon. Looks like it's the Lakes then! Sorry about the fuel cost :) 👍👍
The first building was Dubs Hut, when your video hits 14.50 looking down to Buttermere you weren't that far from the Bothy, it was to your left and not very far!. loved the video I never thought in my life time I would see someone walking the plank!
lol That plank looked trickier than it came across on the video. I knew I was close but it was just about to get dark. I love the challenge though so I'll be back! 👍👍
Fantastic video mate. The long exposure of the boathouse was stunning! But then your other images weren't bad either 😀 Such an inspirational vlog - loved it 👍👍☺
Gary, just found your site through Paul Johnson, I live in California but just got back from England and spent a week in the lake in Glenridding so got the shot of the boathouse at sunset. Wish I had came across your video while there, didn't make Derwentwater big mistake ... you must have been there the week before we had good weather for the week ... by the way I grew up in Newcastle area .. thanks
Hi Kieth. Through Paul? He's a great pal, but I was just wondering how you found me through him? It pretty much rained heavily for a week before I went to the Lakes. I'm not complaining though. Thanks for watching and for taking time to comment. It means a lot to me 👍
Great vlog Gary those images were wonderful,I think the long exposures just pipped it for me,only just though🤓the combined sky in the long exposures works brilliantly but I love the streaking in the uncombined sky,I'm off to saltwick bay and Whitby tomorrow gonna try some long exposures of the black nab
Cheers Christian. For me, the streaky sky has to be a bit special for it to work well. I do like it sometimes, but only sometimes. Whitby and Saltwick Bay are such great places to photograph. I made a video there. 👍👍
looks like Dubs bothy you passed the the iron work Warnscale is a little further back towards green crag turn right on the path that joins the haystacks path.
Hi Clinton, I mix exposures all the time. I created a "how to" here... ruclips.net/video/wjEWJJWa_fk/видео.html FYI the birds in that particular picture weren't changed.
Great video once again Gary love the shots, any chance you could show how you combined the sky with the foreground ,I have tried a few times to do this but am never happy with the results, cheers.
Hi Malcolm. Glad you liked the video. In Photoshop I just overlap the images and simply cut out the sky or the floor. I usually cut it out on the Horizon. Hope this helps
Hi Gary, has anyone offered to show you to the bothy yet? If not I live on the edge of the Lake District and would be happy to act as your guide for the day.
@4:43 is a bit special. Stood there many times and the dreamy processing and long exposure works really well. Great shout out for Lynne, she a bit special. Cheers. BTW, I did exactly the same as you and missed the Bothy, found it on a trip with Lynne, it's not an easy hike and we did it from the bottom. If you need a map let me know.
Hi Andy, yeah Lynne is great. She also said she's been there before too. My third attempt will be the mountain route, it's much prettier. I'll make plenty of time for the hunt too. I might even wild camp it 👍👍
Great captures here! With awesome edits too. I need to get my ass here. I live in Lancashire so I should take advantage of that. Saving up to travel the world and take photos. Peace and Love.
Hi Gary. I would highly recommend the Peak Design Slide strap, which allows you to quickly remove the strap on windy days to avoid any disturbance on long exposure. But you can also get just the clips so you can continue using your own strap and advertise you have a Canon 5D MKIII. Love your low cost rain cover!! ;-) Great shots as usual, and I particularly like the combined ones of Derwent Water; wasn't it kind of the gulls to remain still for you!
Hi Paul. it looks like a decent system, I might give it a try. I didn't change the gulls. They're actually really blurry in the image. I did think about changing them but I couldn't be arsed:) 👍👍
Hi Gary I've just going through some of your old videos did you ever get to Warnscale Bothy the hut you found was Dubs Hut Warnscale Bothy is about the same distance again. I've only just found your site really enjoying the vlogs
Terrific video Garry you seem to have had a great day and some fantastic shots, do you combine your shots in Photoshop, I do not think it can be done in Lightroom. The reason that I ask is that I have Lightroom which I love, I also elements 11 which I am not so comfortable with. Look forward to your next video.
Hi Philip, combined in Photoshop. I don't use Lightroom. I always have a great day when I'm out and about shooting Landscapes, even If I don't get the shot I was after. sometimes it's the more about the chase than the catch. 👍👍
Hi Ray. Yeah, its so worth the trip down. You'll get some amazing images for your portfolio in and around this area. This video barely brushed the surface. Good to hear from you again.
Another great one Gary. Would be interested to know the story of that submerged fence and gate. Also, how'd you get those gulls to stand so still for your long exposure? LOL.
Paul Burwood mentioned the Gulls too :) I didn't change them. They're actually really blurry in the image. I did think about changing them but I couldn't be arsed:) re the gate... It's only worth photographing when the lake is really full. Normally it sits proud and on dry land. It was nearly too full in this instance.
Great Vid Gary, I find it hard to get about and can't really trek mountains and crawl through tropical rainforest, so I have to go to places that are easy to get to, and someday's that is a struggle (oh woe is me lol ) At times you feel because you haven't trekked a million miles, your efforts are a bit rubbish, but even a short walk to some is like an epic trek :) You are really inspirational, thank you
So glad you liked the video. I bet there are a million and 1 amazing landscape shots to be had roadside. Maybe I should investigate? Cheers for watching and taking the time out to comment 👍👍
@@GaryGough thank you. you helped me make a decision. btw i love your photography tutorials and your photos. Please keep up the good work .keep inspiring us :)
Hi Gary. I just discovered your channel and I like it much. I live near those places you show in this video. I was at Derwent Water earlier this year for scouting making some pics but now I have better idea how to make them better. I waiting now for new 6D mark II and 24-105 sigma lens and I hope to come back there for shooting. Thank you for your channel
Good video Gary. Why not invest in a decent GPS? I photograph WWI (mostly) and WWII battlefield sites in Europe. I have both WWI and contemporary maps which can be overlayed and I plan a route the day before on my laptop with waypoints, upload them to the GPS and simply follow the directions. It is waterproof and easy to use. It also shows the route you actually take and how far you've covered. I wouldn't have found some remote sites without it.
Always been interested as I caught the school bus from next to the war memorial and wondered about the names. Have been researching soldiers as a hobby and combined that with my love of taking photographs to capture memories, rather than for the technical excellence. I have been over many times. I have been researching my home village soldiers with a view to some sort of memorial; probably a website and so show off some photos too as they can help other explorers to know what is still to be found. I did have a flickr account but cancelled it when I was ill going through a divorce. However some publishers bought photos although I wasn't actually trying to sell any. It is exciting finding live stuff too like shells and grenades! I give the odd 'war tour' talk for the British Legion too.
Hi Gary , just found your channel and the few vlogs i have watched i have really enjoyed. Great results. As for finding specific locations in areas such as the lake district i would highly recommend a hand held gps. A quick google search to find the grid ref of the location you are looking for and it guides you to the location. I purchased a Garmin Montana as its great for walking , cycling , motorbikes ,boating and even as a Sat Nav for the car. Excellent bit of gear for finding remote locations. Hope you found it in the end or have someone to take you. Look forward to more of your content.
Hi Lee, Sound advice. I'll look into it. I didn't make enough time to look for the Bothy, so it's my stupid fault :) Thanks for watching and for taking time to comment. It means a lot to me 👍
Another enjoyable adventure Gary, loved the drama in the skies you captured.
Thank you Keith
Love the autumnal colours on the boathouse shot
Gary,
The long exposure color boathouse screams quality, --hey man, yer hijacking' my style!
Thank-You,
Mike
Cheers Mike for all your comments :) "thine arse remaineth dry" best comment I've heard in years 👍👍
That long exposure of the boat house is just excellent Gary!
My favorite too James. I might get it printed for the studio. Colour or B & W? hmm
Gary Gough colours add to the image for me
I read the Arthur Ransome books when I was a kid and absolutely loved them. The stories were set in the Lake District.
Cool. Cheers 👍👍
Enjoyed that Gary! The water level at the Boathouse was high. Visited in May and was able to get over the wall amongst those trees. hey Gary, nice to see you again in poring rain with another beautiful video.. very informative and interesting ..
it just wouldn't be the same if it wasn't raining now would it :) Thank you, Mazen 👍👍
Another great video Gary. So far you are the only one to spare a thought and recommendation for the disabled among us who love landscape photography but are greatly restricted by disability. Hopefully others will follow your lead and suggest suitable locations from time to time. Look forward to your next video. Thanks. Best wishes John
Hi John, I fully intend to mention it all the time moving forward. Thanks 👍👍
Another great presentation! It's never a failure when you can spend a day off in the great outdoors with your camera!
Well said, Bradley!
Absolutely beautiful images throughout.
Great vlog as always Gary and some great images I especially liked location 1 the boat house
Hi Dean, it's an amazing location. Have you been there?
No mate not been but the next time I do get up that way I’ll certainly make a point of it.
Hello Gary, yes it was nice to mention that even the disabled can take shots for their portfolio, catch you later, keep it up, suggestion how about doing the digital processing end, just a short one, or even doing a critic of photographers images.

Great to see your work tonight Gary.
Cheers rob.
Bobby John & Rob, I'm confused :) Thank you 👌
The Bothy sounds like a mystical place, maybe it only appears to those who have some Druid in their veins! Thanks Gary.
I think you're right you know. Or it's just a big conspiracy and it doesn't actually exist! :) 👍👍
Wernscale Bothy is on my bucket list too. I think you found Dubs Hut and the Bothy is about a quarter of a mile further on. Great video and good luck next time.
It's the excitement of the hunt that wins every time! Twice I've failed now though, damn :)
Third time's a charm, you know you'll nail it!
Some wonderful images, Gary. Especially liked the long exposures in #2. Thank you.
my favorite too Tony, cheers 👍👍
I love lake district! Nice shots! 😉
Thanks for saying. I do too 👍👍 Thanks Lajos
Some beautiful images Gary and thank you for encouraging folks to shoot iconic locations, so many photographers are derisive about them. All the best.
Cheers Trevor. Iconic rules. If they didn't rule, they wouldn't be iconic!
Love the wet weather gary, even though awkward. The rewards are there. Great video
played havoc with my hairstyle though :) That's why I always go to Skye in the winter 👍👍
As usual awesome video. Great B-roll!
Shot most of it on my 1DX - Thought I'd up the anti. Glad you liked it 👍👍
Either that was a very bendy plank or the rucksack was very heavy lol. Wonderful as always Gary, nice to see you smiling no matter what the weather.
lol none taken Peter :) Think we both know why it was bending lol - It was scarier than it looked. I nearly went on my arse as it was. 👍👍
Gary, your images are absolutely stunning. I mean it. I always look forward to your videos and this one in particular doesn't disappoint. Love your vlogs and the superb, masterful images. Thank you for sharing them with us and for inspiring us. Wow.

Brilliant Ian. Can you share them? I'd love to see them
Some keepers there.

You always keep me motivated Gary. Another great video. Love your work!
That's brilliant. Thanks for saying 👍👍

Hi Lynne, you're welcome. Did you find the Bothy in the end?
Again, great video, Gary. Thanks for the adventure :)
Thank you Jeffrey 👍👍
I love the strong sky/milky water combination shots. Just starting to explore landscape photography (fairly competent portrait photographer) and I wouldn’t have thought of doing that. Love your videos.

Thank you very much, Paul, very kind of you to take the time to watch and leave me feedback 👍 👍
That was amusing Gary. Lesson for the day? 'Persistence' (maybe).
Gary, thanks for another great video. Also, I really appreciate your "channel recommendations"!
Thanks Judy 👍👍
Best video of yours yet Gary. Loved the music and the b roll was inspiring. Awesome shots too :)
Better than my Sky video? Cheers Paul 👍👍
Great minds think alike Gary!😂 I like long exposures on water, but don’t often like what it does to the sky. Another great vlog mate.
Great minds indeed :) Cheers 👍👍
Great vlog Gary. These things happen.

Great photos,Gary. Do you layer in long exposures and normal exposures in Photoshop? The birds at 9:05 for example? Thanks.
Hi Clinton, I mix exposures all the time. I created a "how to" here... ruclips.net/video/wjEWJJWa_fk/видео.html
FYI the birds in that particular picture weren't changed.
great shots and music, do you have any video's that show how you switch the sky's and also any that show how you develop your shots in post
Hi Chagrin. Glad you like it. My next tutorial which is out on Wed (hopefully) is exactly this. Hope you like it
Great! looking forward to it

Sounds very exciting. Wish I did it when I was younger 👍
🤣🤣love the end ..class
Another great video Gary, very inspirational and you did a great job with the weather! Many thanks for sharing the love of photography :-)
Cheers Shaun, You must be missing the Great British weather? C'mon I know you are ;)
NO WAY!!!!! but enjoy you guys showing the lovely UK landscape in all weathers!!!! :)

Hi Tim, sometimes it's the more about the chase than the catch. Already planned a return visit, with a wild camp too :)
Nice one Gary, I need that boat house photo :)
I'm certainly happy with my results. I think I might print that one for the studio. Colour or B&W... hmm
Gary Gough gotta be colour
@4:43 what was the iso fstop and shutter speed? Also what filter do you recommend?
F11 - ISO100 - 30seconds - I only use a .9 + .6 Soft Grad filter (Kood Pro) and my LEE 10-Stop filter. Hope that helps
Hi Rafa. Great gear so no more excuses :) Thanks for the support. Happy New Year
Great vid Gary bad luck on the day but still very enjoyable mate 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Brian. I always enjoy myself, that's what it's all about 👍👍
Good video Gary.
Sounds like a cracking idea. WWI + II sites. Now that does sound interesting. Tell me more. Is it a just a personal project or are you writing a book?
Gr8 shots. pls add settings data to understand better
Thank you. I normally to add the data, not sure why I haven't with this? Cheers 👍🏻
I didn't make enough time to look for the Bothy, so it's my stupid fault :)
Thanks for watching and for taking time to comment. It means a lot to me 👍
Is it possible to have skies like that each day/ :). Great video and images. What a day!
Come rain or shine, they're definitely my favorite days. Glad you liked it 👍👍
