OMG! No one has ever explained the exposure trio so clearly. 3 up/3 down! All that money wasted on photography courses that never gave a simple guide like that???? You Sir are wonderful. My dyslexia understood your lesson from beginning to end. Thank you from the bottom of my heartxxxxx
As a complete DSLR novice but soon to be heading to the Scottish highlands, where waterfalls appear from nowhere, this has been by far the best tutorial i've watched. Simple, understandable tuition and language...it all makes sense now. Thank you.
Your ability to explain complicated things into a simple and effective way to understand...it is a God given gift, you are truly an amazing teacher. Thank you Gary.
I will visit an area with plenty of waterfalls very soon and so I was looking for advice and inspiration on how to photograph them properly. Found your channel - and this video has it all. Clear and easy to understand. As a pure hobbyist I knew the exposure triangle before, but now I know how I can use that in practice! At least until practice again reminds me of my enormous learning potential ;) Great fun to watch your channel. Thank you very much, Gary!
Thanks so much for the detailed explanation. Before I just kept changing my settings until I got something I liked. I knew about the triangle but not about the 3 stop rule. That makes it so much easier. Thanks again. Now I just need to go find a waterfall to photograph.
Fantastic tutorial. Gary explains the exposure triangle in such an easy to understand way. Now long exposure photography doesn't seem so daunting. I particularly enjoyed the comparison images showing how each change impacted the image. Such an easy process and one that I can practice. Thanks Gary
Hi Gary, Finally your wonderful easy tutorial about the “Triangle Stops” is a priceless gift to me. Sincerely grateful for the great sharing and teaching to those who are passionate about photography! ❤🥰🙏🏆
Gary, this was a great tutorial. Simply in simple language that everyone understands. The beginner and the seasoned photographer can do all kinds of things with this. The ND app was also an addition. Thanks for this and like more of this. Your way of teaching gives peace of mind, no pressure, relaxing and fun to follow. Top Gary please keep this up !!
Just got into photography and now learning about filters - this was greatly appreciated. Now I just need to find a waterfall in Central Texas. I did buy a NISI 77mm Swift variable ND Kit 1-9.
As I watch in progress, a couple of thoughts: - The best light for waterfalls is indirect: shaded or at least partly overcast. Bright sunlight is the worst because of highlights. - I highly recommend a polarizing filter. Even on a cloudy day, a polarizer will ameliorate ambient reflections and bring out color. I personally prefer shutter speeds between 0.5 to one second, depending on the strength of the waterfall. From there, I bracket. Sometimes I'll blend in a faster shutter speed just to better combine water motion and detail. EDIT: At 16:25 the voiceover went to stereo, which was much better. Not sure what you did different, but thanks.
Your intro states I’m going to explain in plain English how to photograph waterfalls and boy you don’t disappoint . Sir you are a natural communicator and a joy to listen to as well as very entertaining . I have watched almost all of your videos and nobody comes near to you in the art of teaching . There is only one other in the same league in my humble opinion and he is Karl Taylor but you are entertainment personified.
This is a most comprehensive tutorial. Gary this is the best video that I have seen which demonstrates how to use the camera. You a re a great teacher, especially for me a total 'novice' when it comes to photography.
Gary, that is probably the most comprehensive explanation of stops I have ever seen, absolutely fantastic tutorial. Please keep up the great work you are doing. Pete
This is an excellent overview that goes beyond waterfalls! I just purchased my 10 stop ND filter but was nervous to use it. Boy, the lights came on after watching this. My confidence is ready to do fieldwork. Thanks Gary!
I have often wondered what the technique of photographing Waterfalls and weirs. Thank you Gary for this tutorial, All I want now is the nearest Waterfall.
Thanks Gary, this is the best tutorial I have seen on changing these settings. I had an idea of stops and 3 clicks per stop but this has truly explained it to me. Thanks for being so comprehensive, rather than just do it once you showed us all the way from one end of the spectrum to the other, thank you.
I have too many tripods already, but love my Ifootage tripod, the fastbowl really makes the job of getting the camera level so simple, but beyond that, the tripod is just so easy to open and close, not too heavy, and easy to clean. Good luck to who ever wins, you will love it.
I fully agree with all the others, a photo tutorial that I can understand, I started this a bit late at 65 and to be honest all my gear has been locked away until now. Gary you've given me inspiration and motivation. At last an instructor and NOT a salesperson. Keep them coming mate.
There are many great Photographers on this platform for sure including GG some of your Oppo's but for me (and has been said below, above or previously !) you are my go to guy, in no small part due to the way you teach and include Nobbers like me. Also and I might be wrong here but you are the only tutor I recall that explains the "3 Clicks" = 1 stop, which may sound minor but for me its attention to detail. Awesome vid Gary, many thanks for sharing, and helping others. be safe.
Masterfully done Sir. Start to finish this was a well thought out and explained lesson for everyone from the beginners to the novice looking to get a refresher lesson. Job well done.
Big thanx! You have great pedagogic skills. I saw another video with your long exposure photo of seascape. I follow a lot of photographers, but the simple and understandable way you explain things are unique. I am going to subscribe and look through all your videos.
That was really mind blowing how you explained this, as it put a structure to understanding why the changes were made, where I've just sort of hit and hoped the settings before, but not really understood why I was making them.
Finally found an explanation of the exposure triangle that really makes sense. Awesome video Gary, thank you. This is a real “light bulb” moment for me 👍
This has to be the best video lesson I have ever watched you explain things very simple for simple people like me. I would love to spend several days with you learning more about photography. Thanks Rick.
This is definitely the best photography tutorial I have seen. And what you just taught is what some other teachers would call a master class and charge a crazy amount of money. Thank you very much. And to know you are giving away your tripod is nothing but amazing.
Thanks Gary. Very timely. We have had quite a bit of rain and the snow will start melting in the mountains soon. I think I will try some waterfalls in March.
Now if I am clear about the subject of the exhibition triangle, I have never seen on the internet such a good, clear and simple explanation on the subject. Great teacher. Thank you very much for your time and sharing your knowledge.
Love your straight forward approach and going at an understandable speed so many on RUclips seem to think they will die if they don’t say a minutes content in 10 seconds.
Both lower exposure time and long ones are great. However, caution is necessary to highlight clipping since it is not possible to preview that when the exposure is short. Therefore, even changing iso do compensate longer exposure clipping appears. I also like to blend different time exposures. The main chenge in the longer ones is at the almost still water at the horizontal pond. It becomes milky only for very long exposures. Having that blended with some defined lines is what a like most.
Just watched this Gary... wow amazing how you explained all that. Thank you so so much. Please come up to the North East and do some shoot up here. There are many many RUclips photographers out there and none offer the sound advice like you m8. Outstanding work !!!! I take my hat off to you sir!
This is the best video iv seen that explains it so clearly and even shows you the out come of every shot thanks Gary I love watching your videos keep them going.
Gary , another brilliant video. I wanted a video suggesting settings for waterfalls and came away with a much better appreciation of the exposure triangle principle. Great inspiration for playing with settings now and can't wait to start. The three clicks explanation was brilliant and such a simple way to get complex information across. You are a great teacher - many thanks!
Wow! I love this video. It really simplifies how to photograph waterfalls. Ha ha.... now the actual practice it for myself part! I think I'm going to have to jot down notes to keep me right. Thank you so much for sharing. Loving your videos.
Thank you Gary. Without doubt this tutorial is way beyond the Norm. I saved the video for my own personal learning benefit. I will study and enjoy every idea. You deserve all of the accolades you receive Gary. Very special. I will treasure your tutorial. Thank you. Stay safe.
Sir G.G. you're an amazing instructor, can't believe your channel only has 75.5K subscribers. I really enjoy your teaching style, thanks from Vancouver, British Columbia Canada eh!
Thank you Gary for the triangle explanation! This video has helped me understand the exposure triangle and the histogram better then anything I’ve seen.
Brilliant, just brilliant. Thank you very much for an excellent tutorial that is explained so well and leaves you confused as to why I didn't understand it before. Now it's in my head and that's where its going to stay because of your wonderful explanation. So pleased I watched this vid.10/10 Gary.
Wow! I'm glad I found this tutorial. I'm getting ready for a little road trip here in Pennsylvania to take exposures of a couple of local waterfalls tomorrow. The fall colors here are beginning to peak, so it should make for some good shots. You gave what has to be the clearest and best explanation of the exposure triangle I have ever seen. Great job!
another cracking instructional video Gary. Now we have more freedom to go out, it will inspire us as photographers to get out and create great images again
Thanks for taking the time and replying so quickly Gary, much appreciated. I have tried the ctrl + F5 but to no avail. Not to worry - maybe its this Apple Computer of mine that's causing the issue. Thanks once again for taking time out to read and respond to my messages. All The Very Best. Regards Keith.
Brilliant vlog as always Gary. The difference in the flow of the water is really interesting. Hey your camera reminds me of my brothers hammer drill, " well worn". Its refreshing to see someone that actually uses their camera to that extent. As you know its the operator not the camera. cheers and stay safe.
Fantastic informative video . I've gained so much from your clever presentations . WB is one of my favorite most visited falls , but I now need another visit to try some of your tips .
What an excellent tutorial for helping beginners understand the principals of exposure control using the exposure triangle. All beginners should watch this regardless of whether they are landscape photographers. Beautifully explained and presented. Thanks, I will share this.
I know how to photograph waterfalls although living on the London/Kent borders I dont have to many opportunities and I have no need of another tripod but I still watched this video. Odd? not really, I just I enjoy your videos and presentation style. Great work Gary. ps. good luck to all who enter

Hello, Gary. How's things? Fantastic video! Thank you so much. I've never used ND filters. Instead, I've used a polarizer to shoot a waterfall once.I remember using a shutter speed of about four seconds and it was one of the best photos I've ever taken. There was a beautiful rock in the foreground and the water turned out very milky. Shot with film.
Awesome Gary! I'm relatively new to this type of photography and you made it very simple. You told us, then told us again, then told us again. By the third time I got it! LOL Great instruction. Thanks so much! :)

@@GaryGough Oh it has helped! I hope you are out and about taking some awesome shots! Enjoy!
It’s helped me massively as well. Gary explains things easier than any other photographer I’ve come across 🙌
A photographer who helps as opposed to telling us what gear he keeps buying 🤔 Stays true to the art.
I’ve watched hundreds of photography tutorials and you are literally the first to explain stops, outside of aperture size. Excellent.
The only RUclips photographer that teaches at all levels and entertains too. Top man as always...
As a complete DSLR novice but soon to be heading to the Scottish highlands, where waterfalls appear from nowhere, this has been by far the best tutorial i've watched. Simple, understandable tuition and language...it all makes sense now. Thank you.
