So so happy I found your channel! Now because I don’t consider myself a novice my ego does not allow me to agree with absolutely everything but I ALWAYS learn something from every one of your videos. Thanks so much!
Hi Gary, thank you so much for making this video, as a newbie I applied the nd filter then finally got focus lock, then took the photo and wondered why it looked so bad! I now realise after watching this that you take a "normal" exposure, THEN add the nd then switch to manual focus, then adjust the SS, all thanks to watching this brilliant video. Top man, a very grateful beginner.
It's great to have a look through your lens like that. It's much better than listening to someone telling us what they're doing. I'm a visual learner and this has certainly helped so I'll be off tomorrow taking landscapes. Thanks!
Every single week you deliver and give tips on perfecting our Photography. I am sat at work and watched the vlog as I couldn't wait to get home to watch it. During the symmetry section I'm sitting here saying to myself Gary go left a bit, no left a bit more lol. But ofcourse when you produced the final photo the symmetry was bang on. "Never in doubt 😉" I can watch your work for hours I'm forever thankful and appreciative of the content you continue to provide us members with every week. I think when times are back to normal and travel is permitted I'd like to one day book one of your courses to put into practice what I have picked up from yourself. And also ask about other areas I am not as confident with. Always willing to learn and who better to learn from whether that be via watching your vlogs or out in the field. Much appreciated as always Gary. Beautiful images might I add even though the weather was not as you'd have liked. Richie x
Always something to learn from you Gary. It's a pleasure learning from someone who can explain things with ease and doesn't talk down to the viewer. thanks.
I need you to come with me when I go out. But as that is not possible (wrong side of the pond), I really like how you explain your process and set up Gary, especially when you show us on the live view. Just makes so much sense to me. Loved the images.
Well worth watching all of this. Every time watch one of you videos, I lean something that improves my photography. The final image is just amazing as well. Cheers
Wonderful video...thanks for the tips and great images..... like the way you took the viewer with you during the compositions. And it's inspired me to explore seascapes...it's a good hour's journey for me but worth exploring after watching your video..
Great vid for beginner's like me Gary, love Seaton only spent an afternoon there the lift and pier are fantastic. when I was there the rails on the pier were covered in knitted figures don't know what it was all about but it looked great
Gary what a great educational blog. I love the photos and especially those of the pier. Looking at the picture, your mind wanders away. Ideal for a psychotherapeutic room at the psychiatrist or wherever. Your technical story with the practical images SUPER. This way we see what you do and that is very educational. Even if you think you know and are able to do everything, it is always a pity to look at someone else as well. Always educational.
Brilliant Gary info is always very helpful , images stunning as always , thank you really enjoyed your tutorial a much needed breath of fresh air for me at this moment in time 👍
I have watched your vid's for ages...so many good tips...This one just seemed to hit the spot..I really love long exposure photography .. mine is a bit hit and miss...I live in Eastbourne, personally don't like victoriana (the pier) but seeing it in a different light after watching this ! Thanks Gary..
I concur great video as always, but photographers assume everyone knows how to setup a tripod and adjust the head. The videos I have watched for beginners are dated. I appreciate your efforts to educate us. Keep up the good work.
Great instructions and tips. We are going to the beach in a couple of weeks and I plan to use your tips and techniques to try and get some good photos.
Great video Gary of a place I know so well. Shame there was no sunrise to speak of which is a shame as there have been some humdingers of recent weeks.
Very informative Gary. May have to re-think the Mysett,s on my Olympus OMD. Pre programmed to bracket 5 shot,s at 1/3rd EV +/-, F11 for landscape. Saves faffing about going thru menu,s. Got another 5 Mysett,s can pre progam, and a greater depth of field on micro 4/3rd,s is a bonus.
Shame the beach is full of stones normally its sandy. I have spent days photographing Saltburn but when you live here you no excuse. Im in a wheelchair so the beach is out of bounds, watching you under it brought back some great memories. Some great information and photos thanks for sharing. 2x👍
Thanks for sharing your thoughts/comments....Should be more videos like this so beginners like me can learn from you professionals...I am a hobbyist at 78yrs and learn from these videos... Cheers from Australia...
Paying close attention to the date, I initially watched with some scepticism. 😂 Seriously, I love the fist composition. The contrast between the very colourful pebbles and the almost monochrome remainder of the scene appeals to me and demonstrates that you can almost always fine an image even in the mos unpromising lighting (e.g. as in this, no detail in the sky). The combined three image of the pier is very dramatic. Your presentation and explanation of the exposure triangle is very clear and should help beginners in the art. Thanks for another excellent video production.
Gary, cracking video, really helpful for us learners! especially seeing the actual settings on your camera, where you focus a third into the scene (so much better to actually see it) I'm now subscribed and looking forward to working my way through your other videos, thankyou.
Hi Gary simple process usually produce great results as you demonstrate. My recurring mistake if forgetting to switch to manual focus when adding the 10 stop. Looking forward to hearing from you on the new camera and managing those big files.
@@GaryGough Gary would love you to check out my latest video, and let me know what you think of my long exposures, just skip to the gallery at the end, although it is my best video so far. A certain Welshman had a bit of an influence in my images. Stay safe mate.
Now Goughy, great tutorial as always buddy. I really enjoy your methods of teaching. I got my first 35mm SLR camera back in the early eights and I’m still crap!! I believe at least some of this is down to workflow (or lack there of) in my case. I think I get myself far too bamboozled by camera settings and buggering about in menus etc. So much so, I actually forget about the basics like subject, comp and focus! I suppose I’ll have to keep trying and wasting my time, money and effort! 🤣👍 Regards, Dazza. 🇬🇧
Hi Gary, great video with a lot of useful info ! Question about the image taken under the pier: did you combine the hdr shots with the one with the 10 stop filter?
Gary, I also use a 5DSR. I predominantly shoot landscapes and use FlexiZone AF, 1-Point AF, Evaluative Metering and One-Shot AF. Can I assign settings for shooting wildlife (BIF) to let’s say one of the C modes so I can quickly switch over? If so would you recommend AI Servo, etc? Wasn’t sure if this was possible and then when in switch back to manual if camera settings would return to what I normally shoot at. Thank you.
using an exposure calculator, He knew that when he had an exposure of 1/8th of a second he would need to expose for 2 minutes to get a perfect exposure when he put the 10 stop filter in front of his lens, because most cameras only go up to 30 sec shutter speed, he put the camera into "bulb" mode which allows you to keep the shutter open as long as you want. To do this effectively, he used a timer (intervalometer) a device that plugs into the side of the camera, it can be set to keep shutter open for any desired time, in his case, 2 minutes.
Gary, just asking this before ive watched the full vid and apologies if its a bone question but about 5:55 you took the exposure up using the Histogram and the meter was showing over exposed by 1 1/3 stops is there a reason?,why did you not take the meter to "0" sorry if its stupid. I so want to take some Fine art pics your's are stunning.I've said before out of the many great photographers providing tutorials on this platform I personally enjoy your the best.
Sorry Gary I go with Mali there is more pleasure getting a really good image in the field. Brilliant flog you 2 are going to have to do more vlogs together
