It's called adventure, and in my humble opinion, bee's knees shot or not; always worth the effort and memories. We live and learn, and adding adventure, at least in my 62 yrs here, increases both living and learning! Sorry for the run on. Great video sir, thank you!
I have been watching your videos from across the pond, and I appreciate your expertise, your enthusiasm, and your sense of humor. When I was a younger man, I did a lot of running. The same golden rule applied,-it was too hot, too cold, too hilly, too rainy, too humid, didn’t wear the right shoes, eat too much for breakfast etc. to beat my personal best, but once I got going none of that mattered. Thanks.
Went down there last March - always impressed with the rock formations at Hartland Quay and Duckpool. The latter has a great example of nature's bricklaying in the rockface, plus lots of those low lying rocks stretching out onto the beach
Enjoy the process, Gary, not just the result. Love the photography, not just the photograph. Then you are never disappointed. That, I think, is the golden rule.
Absolutely right . I just spent a week in Alaska; too much wind, 18 hours of sunlight, too many clouds, etc., but somehow came back with a few "keepers" :) Great channel!
Never thought I would hear you say I admit defeat!....and yes scrambling down cliffs at your age is dangerous, you are lucky just going out the house at my age is dangerous! But at the end of the day you got a lovely picture so stop moaning.....Thank you so much for taking us to Devon we have fond memories of Devon, I enjoyed the video.
Had to smile when you talked about scrambling down the cliff to get an "inaccessible" shot being difficult "for a man of my age". Since following your channel, I've discovered several great waterfalls very near where I live but most demand a precarious scramble down gully sides - not easy for a man of my age - 70 😂. However, I'm enjoying the challenge and you've opened up a new rich vein of landscape locations for me. Many thanks for another entertaining video.
I go to North Devon at least once a year. The whole coast line from Bude Northwards is truly amazing. One of my favourite places.... Oh, and the path is really hilly and steep...
Not sure why you were disappointed. I thought the sunset pics were wonderful. Maybe not what you had in your heart, but you figured it out. Love your videos!
I have been to Hartland Quay 3 times in the last couple of years & it is not an easy place to get a good photograph. I will go back & try again when I return to Exmoor later in the year. Don't underestimate Devon my boy, from a Devon maid. Morewentstow, slightly further down the coast is also equally stunning. We broke down the 1st time with the car bonnet parked facing the sea wall opposite the Hotel. My husband had flattened the battery of the car as he fell asleep with the radio on. Sadly, I didn't get a decent sunset while waiting for the AA. Nice to see you in my part of the world & now you know why I don't go else where. "Devon Glorious Devon". Stay safe & well.
Brilliant Gary, some great shots, i would gladly swap you one of my bad days for one of yours 😁😁 your producing some of the best work on RUclips and your commitment and effort always come through. Top work fella 👍
Gary you were too hard on yourself, stunning sunset shots, great composition and the drone work was excellent adding to a real flavour of the landscape! The hard work paid off I believe anyway.
With the images, its an ALL WIN! I agree of what you said, rule of the head not by heart...yes at times risk of moving forward to take a composition but with high risk of endangering yourself is greater, better be safe than sorry. Your images have inspired me to create in this genre! Thank you for that!
OMG your golden rule of photography I laughed so hard at that.....thanks for making me laugh for the day that was just gold and so bloody true. i am going to share that with my workshop groups to now and give you a plug also. Love your work Garry.
@@GaryGough welcome Gary. I was out today burnt to a crisp. Had a mare forgot to pack spare SD cards and the one in camera decided to not work en route to my subject :-( Will have to revisit.
Brilliant. Enjoyed the whole video and your attitude towards photography in general. Always learn something from you too so thanks for the great work and look forward to continuing this journey with you.
Zenjoyed your set of photos, went there 3 years ago in a rain storm, marvellous scenery but lacked the knowledge to give the scenery the justice it deserves.
I do like your delivery and content Gary and oh, it also really helps with my photography 😀😜. Thanks for doing such great work, I look forward watching your material here downunder. Bill, Brisbane Australia
Nice image,s Gary, done part of the Devon Coastal Path, crime,s was knackering, sea level to 500 foot, then repeat. young fit chap then, backpacking in Scotland 4 times a year. Hardest thing I,ve done.
Watch all your vlogs Mr Gough, big fan of your photography, think you’ve been a bit hard on yourself here. These are some of my fav shots you’ve taken, stunning work! Think you should continue to rule with your heart.
Very nice Gary - thoroughly enjoyed & glad you made it back safely to the carpark. I think the images down on the beach were great - not sure I would have been brave enough though - especially on my lonesome....👍
Made me laugh out loud Gary. My wife says “why are they always moaning in the videos you watch”. After 30 years of photography I finally managed to forget to bring an SD card at the weekend. I moaned then thought I’d wander around with my phone. I got a great shot, that whilst would have been better on my camera, I’m not sure I would have seen it without the phone.
That first shot when you changed it to B+W, sublime, your follow-on shots superb. A couple of more rules for you on coastal shoots. Tide heights are given on an ave air pressure of 1013hp, so for every 1Hp drop in the air pressure, the tide will be 1cm higher. A drop of air pressure to 950 your tide height will be 63 cm higher. The other rule is the rule of 1/12s tide rise of say 12ft first hour, 1ft, 2nd a further 2ft, 3rd a further, 3ft, 4th a further 3ft, 5th a further 2ft and the last hour a further 1ft. It explains why people get stuck on rocks! We need to look at shipping forecasts for coastal weather far more help. The only problem I see with Devon, it's on the wrong side of the River Tamar, lol
I could see you were disappointed but you are a perfectionist I loved the shots of the rocks and sunset and would have any of those shots on my wall they were in my opinion stunning and I would loved to have taken them
I had the same problem there last weekend scrabbling around trying to unsuccessfully find a good sunset composition. Best shot of the day was during the golden hour compressing the view along the southwest coast from the Upper carpark. Did you notice you can see the Gower from there!
@@GaryGough as in Gower near Swansea where we live. We could see it on the horizon so used a compass and Google earth. The Hartland lighthouse would have been another great photo except it was clad in scaffolding for refurbishment last week.
Gary what would you have done differently to better foresee the composition issues without climbing down? Not sure how you would know. Enjoyed the mix of wildlife and landscape. I loved your composition with The angled rock outcrops at sunset.
If these were my images I would be absolutely happy with them. Maybe you weren't exactly in the space you wanted to be, the images are brilliant. Love the B&W treatment as well.
Brilliant Gary. Great location and video with some great images. I think that it could of gone either way of staying at the top or going down to the bottom of the cliff for the sunset as you wouldn't have got the images that you took. All the best bud.
Great shots. Even on your bad days your work is still fantastic and brightens the day. Some times you have to make mistakes to learn from so you'll be better prepared the next time. Your mistakes are still better than my best shots.

loved these.... you have inspired me to but a new lens, ND filters and polarising filter..... so definately all the gear no idea.... but the polarised filter I get to see through the surface shine, but it seems to leave a 'green' hue on the pictures.... would you think there is a difference in quality of polarise lenses?
Aw shame you didn’t get the composition on the beach. James thoroughly enjoyed his day with you down at Hartland. I enjoyed it too. We plan to go again but at the end of the summer when sunset is slightly earlier as it was a bit of a drive. Next time you come down this way, can I suggest you visit west Cornwall? Look up Port Nanvan. It is not for the faint hearted, you have to do some climbing but it is amazing there and Cape Cornwall and visit The Lizard - Kynance Cove. Many people prefer Cornwall to Devon but I am bias. 😉 The peninsula is a beautiful place.

Totally spot on; you just can't beat a good moan. Must admit, I was wondering when we were going to see the rest of your trip down to Devon. Hartland Quay is just a fab location, but it's so necessary to get everything right, i.e. tide height, incoming or outgoing, light, setting sun (ideally not too North of West), little or no wind and the list goes on. Love the slomo of you walking uphill ;-). Also loved the fab image when you went down to sea level and the way the tops of the jagged rocks break the horizon; plus you were blessed with great light. So, I don't quite get why you were so disappointed / annoyed.
