Did I just hear Mr Gough say 'Get out of bed, don't be lazy', 'get there earlier'? My God, you've changed (those that know, know). Brilliant location, brilliant advice. Just read an excellent article about the benefits of photography in mental wellness - think this video just put those words into stunning pictures. Love it!
I know you encourage people to dislike your images but I simply can't!! Can take or leave the one of the geese maybe but as for the rest of them....just stunning. One tip I would add (which you seem to achieve anyway) is to "make it an adventure".
Images and music at 16.36mins. Spine tingling! You just imagine the peoples lives that lived there. Photography breathing new life in the old. Thank you.
Hi Gary, been a subscriber to your channel since I found you doing tree and forest shoots with fellow Photographer Mike Browne who is another favourite of mine especially like yourself in the way you explain things. So, here I am watching this video some 5 years after you posting it and those tips will be just as relevant in 20 years time as they are today so thankyou for the reminder on the approach to Photography. The only thing I'd add to the "Gear Doesn't matter" tip is well in some ways it does matter and while you can take these images with any camera, it's also good to have helping accessories such as ND Filters and really good sturdy tripods. Nice fast wide lenses doesn't hurt either.
Great tips and a great video, and I loved your selection of favourites at the end. My one additional three-worded advice: Wear comfortable shoes! Whether it's a landscape shoot, a wedding shoot, being a news photographer, a fashion shoot, you might be on your feet all day, so do your feet a favour by wearing comfortable shoes that are appropriate for the conditions.
My new tip: check your settings. Just the other day I was shooting landscapes at one location, with aperture locked at F/11. Then I went to another spot to shoot birds. I changed lenses, shutter speed, and ISO to auto. But I forgot to open the aperture. I only realized midway through the shoot that my ISO was way too high because of the small aperture and fast shutter speed. Some really grainy shots resulted; very disappointing, but a lesson re-learned. Great video and a nice set of seascapes!
Great video and what a great community we belong to to produce such straight forward simple tips. My three word tips are : #1 Look behind you --- #2 Keep Camera out-----#3 Take a Break. #1 Many times have I gone to a specific place to get a shot and was too focused on the intended shot to really look around and see what was literally behind me. #2 Once I have my shot I pack up my gear and head back only to find a shot on the trail back but was to lazy to pull out all the gear again... Keep it out! #3 After getting your shot, take a moment to sit and enjoy the reason you are there in the first place. You will remember the experience long after the image has faded. Thanks again Gary for another excellent video.
Gary my name is Gary to I don’t know what to say but I was watching your videos and I’m so impressed very hard to compare either do you like a teacher and I’m telling you I learn a lot and I’m gonna keep watching your videos thank you so much for allowing to get more experience we are watching your video
Well I can but say THANK YOU Gary,, watching these "volgs" have been like a breath of fresh air to this old feller. Always thought of myself as just a "snapper" and have owned and used compact cameras for the last few years. Current fav is my Pan LX7. To find someone like yourself who is so down to earth, tells it like it is, and puts a smile on my face, well you'r, as we used to say, a real diamond gezzer,,,, continue doing what you'r doing, cos I'm having shed loads of fun watching you do it,,,,,,,,,,
"Shoot for you" That's the very thing i did when i moved away from motorsports photography. I did it for everyone else, motorsport teams, riders, riders friends and family, sponsors, spectators, you name it. I rarely did it for myself. Then i just packed in, went cold turkey. I started actually learning other areas of photography and the only person i was trying to impress was ME. Funny that the last one would be Practice. I tell my daughter that one all the time for her artwork. When she looks at my drawings or paintings and says "I will never ba able to do that" I tell her that she can, she just needs to practice, practice, practice. Excellent video, Gary. Some great tips there.
Having read most of the tips on your facebook page they come across so much better when you explain them in your own way. Love the little doggie looking out to sea.
Great video, Mr G. Made me smile. How the other half live, eh? A 200 mile round trip to buy some fish and chips. I think twice about walking a quarter of a mile! And it's amazing that you can get such good shots of what is literally a sh** hole - a sewage outfall pipe I should think!
Marvellous video again All those tips are a mantra for business detective work which is part of business Attention to detail is a big part of business and photography Tramping here in the land of the long white cloud one camera one lens. Size and weight does matter, I’ve only ever documented the trips we’ve done. Must try and change that Thanks again
I have to say that was a really informative and brilliantly presented video. Very informative. I love your friendly way of presenting, reminds me of a favourite school teacher. Thank you.
Totally agree with "Shoot for you" One reason I haven't joined the local camera club. I don't want to "criticise" other people's work. My images are mine, they are for me.
'Make the effort'. And that's my problem. Finding time. Work 6 days a week, paperwork for half a day. Skipping holidays as im self employed and needing to keep people happy. Time. Really need to get on top. As always, thanks Gary.
What a great video, Good tips that make perfect sense and cost you nothing. Patience is my weakness and to be honest I'm probably guilty of a few others, but what a good reminder, like it !!
Hi, Gary! Thanks for another interesting, informative, and fun vlog! My wife and I both like your upbeat attitude and watching the joy you get from your photography! It's contagious! I'd like to offer another 3-word tip. I like images shot from odd angles, especially low angles, so my tip is: Get Down Low.
Gary, This was right up my street, A really great blog and I think one of your best, some just amazing photography and you must be delighted with your work.Put across for all photographers simple and straight to the point, I love the way you take photos that are for you and the way you like. Brilliant and thank you. Hopefully might bump into you sometime in Cumbria.keep safe and well, John.
So true Gary, I always have huge expectations but there are so many elements that make the image and just like a great meal needs all the ingredients. I recently went to Iceland and did so much research (almost to exactly where I should stand) but the weather was against me so I came away disheartened. I have since been more realistic about my expectations and I enjoy my photography much more with a relaxed approach and make it a bit more fun. I don't do it for a living so its not the end of the world if it doesn't work. Thanks for all these great tips.
very usefu, Garyl!! My humbel, modest tip is don´t be shy to imitate your photographers idols (you have to start somewhere and that is a good starting point)
Great video as usual Gary. Love the images I did spot the Scottie dog! Those tips are really appropriate as well. Here is one more KEEP YOURSELF SAFE!! All too often I see people take stupid and dangerous risks just to get an image. It just isn't worth it sometimes, so yeah KEEP YOURSELF SAFE!! Or at the VERY minimum MANAGE YOUR RISK!! and KNOW YOUR CAPABILITIES!!
Fantastic, loved the tips, photography was stunning. Did 8 nights on Outer Hebrides in September last year, camped from Barra to Lewis. Returning for another visit this time 11 nights first week in May. Your Vlog has really added to my excitement. Love your work keep it up you are inspiring so many people.
A brilliant video and some great shots - as well as superb video footage. I love derelict buildings and loved your treatment and especially the B&W you sneaked in at the end! That was a real photographers dream day, wasn't it!
Gary, I think the most honest critiques I ever received were from clients when I shot commercially. If they liked the work, they paid my fee and expenses! It does us no good when, after looking at our work, the viewer is more prone to the polite than the honest. The tips you offer today are pearls and gold! Absolutely stunning photos. I enjoy the long exposures - especially around the textured rocks! Thanks for the tips. I will see if I can join your facebook group.
Hi Gary - a very useful and enjoyable video tips-list. I just felt that it would have been useful to know your camera settings you used to get those great shots !!
Thank you - very good useful these tips and your shoots are so great. I sit here nearly the whole day with the flu and watching your videos. I have to say they are the best medicine better than any pill for me. I feel better and better!! Greetings Nikos (Germany)
Excellent vlog; very good tips. Not new, but it’s very good to be reminded. The best one, in my opinion: learn from your mistakes. Because we all make them, nothing wrong with that. But there’s no point in making mistakes if you don’t do yourself the favour of learning from them. And the images in this vlog are, again, marvellous! Greetz from Holland!
I have just stumbled across this vlog and yes it is very good and pics are top notch what surprises me though is the pictures of the derelict house and all the lights inside are on surely the electrics would be switched off
I love your work Gary. I think your artistry shines through every photo and video you put out. And I say this even if long exposures are not my cup of tea! 😁 Keep up the good work. 👍
Tip. Don't be afraid on days when the conditions are horrible, to check out potential locations, with a view to returning when the conditions are favourable
Wise words and some amazing shots from an amazing place - where were the sea stacks? I have been to the island twice and only ones I fond were up north, near the bridge to nowhere.
Thanks Gary, we have been to Huishinish a couple of times but not found those stacks. Last visit we walked over to the beach oopposite Scarp. Breath taking. Must go back - like you need an excuse!
Very helpful thank you Gary. I got into model railways a couple of years ago. I like learning new skills. Model railway people have a saying that is, "Rule No 1". That means it's your model railway, so do what you want with it and ignore everyone else's opinion, unless you ask for it. I'm the same with photography. I've always photographed scenes I want to see again. It's only now that I am retired from my 35 years as a nurse, that I want to get better at it technically. Unfortunately he couldn't frame a scene to save his life and so he was never pleased with the end result. At the end of the day, as you said it is very subjective. One person will love a photo and the next will think the same photo is crap. Ask me to take some street photography and I will have to suddenly see a man about a dog :)
Harris, always a treat, and all your tips are equally important. I have been three times and did not know there were stacks. I assume they must be near the lighthouse so will look next time. I don’t suppose you would please share the location if that deserted house?
I think it's on the A589 on the right-hand side. If you drive North from Tarbert you can't miss it. The Stacks are way over onto the west coast. Just Google the location

Take care xx

Very kind of you to say Nick. Great tip too. I live by it 👍👍
Thanks for the tip: learn from the bad one. I use to immediately delite them. But now I will look at them carefully and learn. Thank you for this.
Karin Strobl - Thank Karin 👍🏻
Images and music at 16.36mins. Spine tingling! You just imagine the peoples lives that lived there. Photography breathing new life in the old. Thank you.

Love the interior shots especially the one through the window, superb.
You are an inspiration. How to look at the scenery and how to see the photo hiding in there.
Takes time.
It certainly does, cheers
Love the B&W of the derelict building, especially the disappearing act with the fence !!!!
Thank you

Gary you are such an inspiration, I seemed to have lost my photography mojo, But watching this has re-ingnited the flickering flame. Thank you.
'Make the effort'. And that's my problem. Finding time. Work 6 days a week, paperwork for half a day. Skipping holidays as im self employed and needing to keep people happy. Time. Really need to get on top. As always, thanks Gary.

Your tips are a great reminder! Never hurts to review! Thanks
Thank you 👍👍
Gary, just used your tips, and came back with some good (not great yet) photos. Great channel by the way. Steve
Glad it helped Steve, cheers 👍👍
Gary,
I think the most honest critiques I ever received were from clients when I shot commercially. If they liked the work, they paid my fee and expenses! It does us no good when, after looking at our work, the viewer is more prone to the polite than the honest.
The tips you offer today are pearls and gold! As common sense, they are, sometimes, not so common. The teacher part of your persona benefits the rest of us mightily.
Your accompanying imagery today kicks ass, Sir! (and love the light jazz audio).
Thank-You,
Mike
P.S. -- Apropos of nothin' the tips I remember from earlier in my life both pertain to a state of being nekkid(!). When nekkid, never squat with your spurs on, and never, never, never fry bacon...
Never fry anything when nekkid :) Cheers Mike 👍
Hi Gary, I follow you from one month now and I learned so many things with your blog. I like your style it's perhaps because I like painting too. Recently, I bought a NISI V6 filter system and I wait now the ND 10 Stop filter and others by Zomei (cheaper than Lee Filter) who I ordering last week. I'm very impatient to practice my passion with this new filters system and I hope that I will be I good student loll.
It's every time a great pleasure for discovering your work and learning more and more. Thanks, Gary to share your experience and professional view of this art who it is the photography.
Thank you for following me and my channel. So glad it's helped you. Cheers 👍👍
