I once took a trip with a good friend of mine to photograph some waterfalls. It had to have been a 5+ hour drive to get to our destination, and when we got there, we BOTH had forgotten our tripods. So, don't make the mistake of forgetting your gear.
Not compensating for changing light...took me a while, but I let go of the "always trust the calculator" mentality, and allowed myself to experiment and start to trust myself.
I love how you DON'T just assume that all beginners make all of these mistakes. And, you tell us the mistakes YOU made. Thank you: great video, and beautiful work.
hope everything is well with you, we are all missing you terribly. your tips about photography has helped me out tremendously, you're an amazing teacher!
Another wonderful video! You have such incredible production value on all of your videos. It’s more than just a lesson, it’s a break from reality for a while. A great lesson, beautiful imagery, soothing music, you nail it all. Thank you!!!
Attilio you gave me the calm in this world of RUclips, each video of yours is a sincere and harmonious conversation, I am sorry not to see more new videos. The important thing is that i hope everything is very well on your side, a hug and take care of yourself.
Why are there no more videos? I was struggling with the genre of photography I wanted to specialize in until I started watch Attilio Ruffo and thanks mostly to Attilio I now exclusively do landscape and cityscape photography and I love it. Thanks for everything and I hope nothing is wrong in your life and you can start creating again soon!!
Thank you for the wonderful videos on long exposure photography. They have helped me very much. I so enjoy your style and method of communicating. It brings a sense of calm and joy. I know you haven’t posted in a while and I wish you the best in all parts of life !
Thanks for sharing and again good choice of music ! My biggest mistakes are indeed to forget to close my viewfinder and not compensating for fast changing light. I lost the small rubber viewfinder obscure tool for my Canon and could not find it anywhere online except for big money. I instead bought some spare eyepieces, took the rubber part of one and glued some black plastic on it so I now have the same thing. I also put a small metal ring through it so I can easily attach it to my filter pouch.
I could say that I never made mistakes. I started to make long exposure photos after watching your videos, thanks to your advice and the passion that you transmit it was pretty easy to deal with this wonderful technique. Thank you Attilio !
Hi Attilio, thanks for the volume of work which you have already shared. You are one of my most favorite landscape photography teachers. Glad to see that you are responding to messages and doing good. All the best and wish you good health 👍 ❤
I did get a 10 stop ND. I have done a few long exposures. I am never sure about my choices but in the long run, it has been ok if I get to make a shot and then make adjustments for the next try.
I get really inspired watching this video and look forward to planning a long exposure session. It’s also comforting to know that the value of making “mistakes” is to get better ! I like it.
Thank you for this very interesting video!!! I am just going to start photos using long exposure. You've gave good instructions to reduce mistakes. THANK YOU!
Attilio - you shouldn't vanish like this without any word - people worry about you, are you ok man, we miss your prescence, just put something up so we know you're doing ok.

This is so much fun! A new facet of photography that I've never attempted but am drawn to it by these vlogs! Thank you and Happy Holidays to you and your subscribers!
Brilliant episode as always Attilio… a beautiful tranquil setting you have chosen.. helpful information as always which is always appreciated , thank you kindly 🙏🏻.
Great video Attilio and love the last image. For me the biggest challenge is compensating the exposure time based on the reducing light. Interesting you opting to go for a 2 minute exposure when the app suggests 31 seconds. I have been increasing the exposure time but only by about 10-20% so helpful tip to push the exposure time out by quite a lot more.
Another brilliant video Attilio! I still sometimes forget to close the view finder, there is nothing worse than not realising you have forgotten until you are sat in front of lightroom!
Adios Proffessor = I have waited and waited for you to come back, just assumed that you have given up = thank you for your past videos, I always got something out of them, byr
Hi Attilio, getting into long exposure and loving it! I'm in south florida and took some cool ones the other eve at our pier, it's so ironic you mention don't rely on the app, I started to but after adjusting the time the pics were so much better.... Great video and thanx again.
Great video as always Attilio, very informative. I’m guilty of most of those mistakes 😊 but learning to minimise them. Still most important thing is to get out and try these techniques and enjoy it. Keep up the great work
Hi Attilio, i've not seen a video from you in over a year?..i hope you are well and healthy, and living your life the way you want.. i hope your not like me, and have put work before everything and photography has been forgotten. all that Gear sat around Doing nothing, i'm nearly 2yrs into this cold place now, but lately, i've started to get that itch again, and i'm now going through videos to give my that final push and inspiration!. that calm voice of yours, and your videos always inspired me.. me & EVERYONE NEED YOU BACK!!!..
Thank you very much, Attilio, for these reasonable explanations, especially on the compensation of changing light. I was really surprised that you choose the factor 4 for your last picture. Lesson learned 👍
Great video as usual! It takes a lot of practice to take long exposure images with good quality. I like that you lift the many misstakes that can be made in the process. Looking forward to your next video 😊
Another outstanding video, this video. This video made me curious about Lake Como, I would like to visit for a few days in the near future, and take the opportunity to take some photos. From a photographer's point of view, what are the places in Lake Como with more potential for landscape photography.
Definitely not going to complain about the warmer weather we are having in late October. Your Grandmother was 100% correct, I am using cheap ND filters and will need to upgrade, so I spend money on crap and still have yo buy quality. Did this with a Viltrox adapter for my R6, and still had to buy the Canon adapter for my EF lenses to work, will I ever learn?
👍Your videos are Very inspiring. ... I am going to dabble in Long exposures, interested in the end results for the photo and controlling the lighting....Thank you. ... different from my concept of action photos.
Hi Attilio, Thank you for the insightful video, inspiring, as always... Could you by any chance give us more info on the exact Kase filter system/kit (Wolverine ? Skyeye ?..) you're showing us on your video ? There is so much selection within the brand that it would help your viewers (and me) quite a bit. Will mainly be used first on 20mm f/1.8 with D850. Thank you...
Hi Attilio 👋🏽 Newbie to LE photography here! I know you said not to trust the app 😅but just out of curiosity when you are entering the test shot/base settings into the app - if you are using a 10stop ND + 3stop GND would you enter into the app as it being totally as 13stops or 10? Thank you for your time and these videos they have made me feel a lot more competent to go shoot
Hello, can you please explain how to focus correctly in landscape photography? For example on your 20mm lens. Perhaps many people would be interested in this as a separate video. Thank you.
Very inspirational and I decided to start long exposure photography seriously this winter by Lake Mjøsa. Unfortunately I bought a NISI filter pack before these wonderful Kase filters were recommended by you, so I've to stick with them in the foreseeable future. Tanks a lot for your advice!
Is it bellgio at the beggining? that's such a beatiful place! You definitly save me with your amazing video! At first i was always using a really slow aperture like f22-32 and the sharpness is just a disaster.... BTW i have another problemo is whem i review my long exposure photos there're always some noticeable black points there, i think it might because the dusts in the 20yrs old lens... How can i reduce this problem as possible? Like using a faster aperture? Thank you so much and buon lavoro!🥰
I recently switch to a mirror less camera, but I still own my Nikon D850 and I use both for long exposures. My only major mistake is forgetting to turn off the in body stabilisation for my mirrorless camera. You have to turn it off and also turning off the lens, stabilisation as well.
Sempre interessanti e ben fatti i tuoi video!
Attilio, thanks for these great tutorials, I am really enjoying these, and I think I could improve my style of photography by your advices. How do you perform a panorama long exposure? I think thanks your talent that would be a great video. Thanks in advance. Chris

I have an Canon EOS R with RF 24-105 F4L and RF 14-35 F4. I also bought 6 and 10 stop B&W ND filters and Manfrotto travel carbon tripod. I really want to get RF 70-200 F4 and it is on sale now. However, I want to keep it 2 lenses only for travel (Going to Iceland in December). I think I can buy RF 70-200 F4 and sell RF 24-105 F4L. However, RF 24-105 F4L is such a good lens! I find using using RF 14-35 much more often though because of the close focusing distance for selfies with the significant other. RF 24-105 F4 has a minimum 45cm focusing distance and my arms are not that long LOL. What a dilemma - or just forget about RF 70-200 F4 and stick with what I have.
