I shoot all my pictures using a Kelvin WB. Although as an underwater photographer needing to use flash, this is usually set to what looks best with the flashes I am using (usually 4700 or 4800K with my main flashes). I like my shots to look great as possible as I shoot them - as I find that inspires and motivates me to push on for something special. And having the WB spot on is part of that.
Hi Andy. Finally finding the time to comment and just wanted to let you know how inspirational your videos have been for me. I didn't quite know where my photo hobby was taking me artisically lately, but your words and visual examples helped motivate me to restore my inner creativity that's been dormant for a while. I've been listening to Rob Read's and Josh Galicki's podcast for the last few weeks and together with yours and their contribution, I'm finally enjoying wildlife photography again with a new found perspective. And let me tell you... It's an extremely hard genre. But your tips on shooting locally and trying new things are making the adventure worth it. I know we say that the tool used doesn't define the artist, but I've got an R5 on the way coming from a 7DII, and can't wait to test my skills in anticipation of a step up in quality. Stay well and I really appreciate you making these videos.
Hey John. Your comment was certainly worth the wait. Thank you so much, and I'm delighted to hear that my videos, alongside the podcasts of Rob and Josh, have contributed to a renewed passion for wildlife photography. There's no question in my mind that the latest equipment offers incredible new opportunities for what we're able to produce. In this challenging field, we must always strive to enjoy the journey! 👊

I will once again take pictures I like. I’m learning so much from you ! Keep up the excellent presentations.
Love this video so much. This is exactly what I needed. And it is also a testament to what it actually means to be a wildlife photographer: years of learning, trial, error, and even more errors.

Beautiful images, Andy. Thank you for sharing. I am fortunate to live within walking distance to a park, which happens to be surrounded by water. I often walk along the shoreline photographing sailboats, yachts, surfers, jet skiers, fisherman, waterfowl, etc. Squirrels, fox, various bird species, even an occasional snake have been the subjects of my camera. This has brought me much joy over the years. I have been able to photograph this area through each season, Winter, Fall, Spring & Summer. I am so grateful being able to photograph so many beautiful subjects. Thank you for your wonderful YT channel. Cheers & safe travels.😊

What a great video. As others have said this was just what I needed, a photographic kick up the arse. I too have just changed to the z9 mainly for the silent shutter and video. Fantastic, thank you for taking the time to help and inspired others.
Always sound and honest advice. I love it! Thank you for sharing so much good information in such a short time. Great job Andy. I suppose you are forgiven for taking so much time between posting each of this videos. You deliver quality vs quantity
Thanks for sharing this Andy - I finally got round to starting watching and, as ever, it is full of useful advice. Look forward to watching the others and future content!
Andy, when it comes to post processing, you said that you do not do things like removing imperfections. (The image of the lion cub and mother) What is your opinion on selective color adjustments? Are you into that? Personally as a nature enthusiast, I have the same view on not removing im0erfections to keep the liveliness and reality of the image. Struggling to decide on whether to do or avoid selective exposure adjustment, masked color overlays like stuff. Like to know your opinion and where you draw the line when it comes to post processing.
@chathuradsilva When it comes to post-processing/colour adjustments then my objective is always authenticity. I want the finished image to look as accurate as possible. I have no issue with selective lightening/darkening as this has always been possible. I see the RAW file as exactly that, something that needs to be optimised authentically.
Thank you very much for your video. I have really good confidence but I always think my photos are not good enough and I decided to stop taking photos. I could listen to your voice for hours, I think everyone realizes how much passion you have for your photography. It motivates me to get back out there and believe in myself and do what I really love - wildlife photography.

Hi Andy, this is amazing to have a site that again inspire photography, the art of taking pictures. I also look at the tech detail and again realise the constant GAS fuelled by the internet with the promise of faster, sharper, less noise etc has created an audience of gear owners. Yes, there are advantages with new technology but in reality, no one can blame poor images on lack of equipment. Fantastic video and inspired me again to go hunt beautiful images of common subjects close to home.
Great content, Andy. Your passion for your furry or feathered subjects and creating art that inspires and connects with nature is apparent. Keep it coming.
It's very refreshing to see someone who is very generous in sharing their knowledge and experience with others. Thank you, Andy. I laughed out loud when you said all the excuses for not to go out because it sounded like me at 3.30am when I have to drive to my site which takes 50min. You mentioned adjusting the kelvin scale in camera, unfortunately my DSLR only adjust by 100 increments. So, it looks like I'll have to set auto WB and then make the adjustments in post. Thanks, from Australia.
@meadowbellphotography 🤣 Those excuses never go away, just how we respond to them! It still might be worth trying at 5000K and 6000K. As you say, you can always default back to Auto WB if it doesn't work!

Just stumbled across your videos and I'm so glad i did. I see so many videos on RUclips that are underwhelming, so called pros whose pictures and just average. Love your work and i look forward to learning, please keep sharing.
EXCELLENT! I am a newbie wildlife photographer and definitely noticed seasonal peaks in opportunities...and learning locations close to home has been so rewarding! Another advantage of getting out in the morning darkness is to enjoy the symphony of bird (waterfowl and songbird) music.
Wow! As usual, amazing video, amazing photos! For me you are the best Wildlife Photographer! I love all your work. Thank you for sharing all these tips with us. Can't wait for your next video.
Loved this video and glad to hear another photographer suggesting manually setting WB by Kelvin. An additional benefit of doing this is to simply allow for mass WB editing in post. I learned this from a wedding photographer. Since they like us wildlife photographers are blasting away at high FPS often, it's much easier to manually set your Kelvin and then say these 50 photos are all a bit cooler or warmer than I'd like. Since they are all at 5560k I can make 1 mass adjustment to them all to a cooler or warmer kelvin and move on in the editing/culling process.
@@sequoi_ as you say, very, very useful if you batch process. As always, authenticity is key, I believe, so that the final image does not look like an artifice!
Awsome video !! Subscribed after a few minutes in ! I just love your approach of photography for the same reasons I love Vincent Minuer ! I can't wait to watch all your videos and stay tuned for the coming ones !! I absolutely love photographers like yourself, that share their point of view of wildlife photography without ANY judgement about other do or like ! You also have a strong autocritisim which I ABSOLUTEL love ! Great and stunning work ! Your video is awsome !
@andyparkinsonphotography you welcome, people like you with open minded approaches of photography, encouraging people to shoot for themselves and making it obviously evident that there are no rules are the key for people like me, having a late start and wished they had the opportunity sooner... I wouldn't have done the same choices in my life if only I knew how much I'll be craving to do it more often... I alwaysed loved photo and nature but I stupidly told myself I would never make it... And still today... So it's people like you and Vincent that makes people like me believe a little bit in themselves that makes a difference... Thanks for your work and your time, it is truly truly precious....
Thanks for this video Andy. Besides the tips, sub tips and good examples of your photos, the video is packed with honest, helpful and inspiring information. Really appreciate and enjoyed it!
Thanks Andy. Very informative and helpful in all you do, and easy to understand what you are saying will make us achieve better photos. Looking forward to challenging myself in testing out auto WB against the Kelvin settings... Just a joy to listen to your expertise..
That was refreshing. So often we see “exotic” animals and birds doing well in photo salons I suspect often due to the rarity of the creature rather than the quality of the image. My current project is capturing the interactions of garden birds from my hide. As you say often neglected by photographers but so fascinating to try and capture and communicate behaviour.
@@andyparkinsonphotography and create you have. Thank you for your very unique and inspiring way of presenting. Dear Andy, Congratulations on starting your RUclips channel! Your immense experience and iconic work with National Geographic and the BBC make your tutorials an invaluable gift to the photography community. Would you believe that I just discovered your channel and finished off all 6 videos in a binge watching session. It’s rare for professionals of your caliber to share knowledge so openly, and your generosity stands out in a field where many hold back or charge a steep fee. I hope to see more videos, perhaps in longer formats, as your insights are an incredible treasure trove. I am hooked on, have subscribed and excited to learn from you on this journey! Best regards, Venkatesh
Great video which will go to boost my enthusiasm for photography of wildlife even more than already is, thanks for sharing your knowledge I look forward to more of your content
Thank you for your work, this helped me see more than gear, more than the tight portrait, and get in touch with seeing God in nature and art in craft rather than technology... why I wanted to do this in the first place. And being new to this all, "take photos for yourself" yes. Clarifying. Helpful. Art and craft rather than commercial aspiration that I can't control the outcome of. But inspiration, I can seek to fulfill that. And inspiration comes from beyond. What He chooses to do with the outcome is beyond me but I can do my part and try my best. the story remains and that's what I want to share. God bless you :)
Just subscribed from New Zealand! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I am a wildlife ecologist but have only started serious photography a year ago. So much to learn and I found your video inspiring and useful.

Just stumbled across your videos and I'm so glad i did. I see so many videos on RUclips that are underwhelming, so called pros whose pictures and just average. Love your work and i look forward to learning, please keep sharing.
I certainly will do, and thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement. They mean a great deal!
Another great session Andy which I both enjoyed and got some great tips and advice. Thank you!
@davidwatkins2886 Thank you as always, my friend, see you soon!
EXCELLENT! I am a newbie wildlife photographer and definitely noticed seasonal peaks in opportunities...and learning locations close to home has been so rewarding!
Another advantage of getting out in the morning darkness is to enjoy the symphony of bird (waterfowl and songbird) music.
@RetrieverTrainingAlone there are SO many advantages to getting out early and to working locally. Thank you for the kind words!
very inspiring and I feel motivated to try again, thank you for sharing.
@@deolimjo that's brilliant to know. Good luck!
Wow! As usual, amazing video, amazing photos! For me you are the best Wildlife Photographer! I love all your work. Thank you for sharing all these tips with us. Can't wait for your next video.
@@SarrafLina Wow, awesomely kind comment Sarraf, thank you. I so appreciate your passion and enthusiasm!
Great vid, well done.
@@alastairpollock7740 Thank you, Alastair.
That swan 🦢 wing was truly a stunner
Thank you so much, I'm delighted that you liked it!
Vincent Munier is an absolute legend, so thank you for the kind comparison. I'm also delighted that you'll be checking out my other videos! 👍
@michaelgellenoncourt2876 Another incredible comment Michael, thank you for being so honest! 👊
Thanks for this video Andy. Besides the tips, sub tips and good examples of your photos, the video is packed with honest, helpful and inspiring information. Really appreciate and enjoyed it!
@carlossanguino3912 Thank you so much, Carlos! I'm delighted that you enjoyed my video.
Great tips all the way through, thanks very much
Thank you so much for the positive feedback! 👍
Thanks Andy. Very informative and helpful in all you do, and easy to understand what you are saying will make us achieve better photos. Looking forward to challenging myself in testing out auto WB against the Kelvin settings... Just a joy to listen to your expertise..
@simonbriggsQCB Thank you so much for your kind words, Simon. It's great to hear that you're enjoying my videos.
@thescouser8629 That sounds like an awesome project, and it doesn’t get more local than that! 👏
The living proof that you dont need the latest and the expensive camera to do magnificent photos, congratulations!!!
@@creandomentes Thank you so much 👍
Nice! Been a while. Another excellent video
@secretmanong yes it has. I've no legitimate excuse, to be honest. I'm just ferociously busy, and they do take some creating! 😬
@@andyparkinsonphotography and create you have. Thank you for your very unique and inspiring way of presenting. I watch a lot of channels and I am impressed by them, then I watch yours and I am, truly blown away. The images you share are just on a different level.
Challenge accepted, this saturday, I will to the white balance exercise and be back with a comment on the results. More power to you sir!
Dear Andy,
Congratulations on starting your RUclips channel!
Best regards,
Venkatesh
Thank you so much for your incredibly generous comment!
Great video which will go to boost my enthusiasm for photography of wildlife even more than already is, thanks for sharing your knowledge I look forward to more of your content
@graemeclarkson9552 Thank you so much for your support and your kind words. It's wonderful to hear that it might hopefully give you a boost!
Thank you for your wonderfully kind-hearted message, Bless you!
Thanks for sharing these tips...the most important one I think is to click for your artistic style and not others...
@tabishshaikh6402 I agree wholeheartedly, Tabish!
Just subscribed from New Zealand! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I am a wildlife ecologist but have only started serious photography a year ago. So much to learn and I found your video inspiring and useful.
