I enjoyed that, woodland chaos I think I have been shooting that a lot lately and I love it, since lockdown I have been shooting local for 12 months now but because the law is so strict here I have only managed to get out with a camera about 5 times but I have taken plenty of pictures to play around with when I get home! Although I have been a photographer for a long time I have spent little time taking pictures in in woodland and I am really enjoying it, I only started my woodland photography last summer so watching videos like this really helps. We are now in the middle of another lockdown and I obey all the rules and stay indoors I have now had my 2 vaccinations and I feel a lot safer and I am looking forward to going out again. I found your video most interesting and thank you for putting it on here. I liked all the pictures you put on here and one or two are close to ones that I have taken so I know I am on the right track. Thank you.
There are many potential images not taken because we don't spend enough time looking at the possibilities. Adding the triptich gives us another opportunity to create something interesting from something that alone may have been seen as mundane. Very useful, thanks.
Yeah! Finally someone who embraces the chaos! Life can be messy, complicated and chaotic. Shallow DOF - background becomes texture. Nice. Ironic that you talked about looking - I just emailed a fellow photographer this - "Does this happen to you? Something grabs your visual attention. Really grabs your attention. It screams at you. The screaming visual calms down if you spend enough time looking at the scene. Then, suddenly, the more subtle stuff pops and becomes as pronounced as the screaming demons. The real shot, the one that says you, is in the subtle subject."
wow Gary your pics are fantastic iv been doing woodland photography for bout a month now watching the your channel has inspired me even more thank you for Gary
Love this, I have always loved photography but it has been mostly point and shoot. Now I am getting serious and I am in the USA and live in Tennessee where we have a lot of woodlands. So far it is my favorite landscape. Because here we have woodland everywhere. Thanks so much for all this great information. Love your channel.
Another enjoyable tutorial, anyone just getting into woodland photography like myself, can only come away with inspired thoughts and ideas after watching this....
You are bloody right, so many people, even so called RUclips pro photographers are just taking random woodland shots and think they've created masterpieces, honestly it does my head in. Thanks for the video Gary, it may make some people think! cheers.
I have an old slide mount on a lanyard I keep around my neck I use to frame up shots. Quick and easy. I zoom by moving it closer or further from my eye
Your video has inspired me to revisit my local woodland today and look at it in a different way. Thanks for the video Garry. I like the idea of triptych presentation.
Good idea the triptic! Thanks! It will give me more reason to get out in the rain. I was deter from it because it is next to impossible to find a perfect subject worth one image in that time, but if you join a few in a balanced texture set then it is worth the viewer 2 sec of his time!! Thanks again!! Good job!
Gary another good one, your right about being in the right woods as brambles and other extraneous matter causes too much interference and detract from suitable subjects.👍
Great Vlog, I think this is a Vlog i will have to view again and again, I find woodland, what we call in NZ "bush" photography very challenging, thanks for sharing
Great video. It show that you don’t have to go in to the mountains to get that killer shot. There are woods near to me and I never really give them much thought, but now see them in a different light.
I really enyoy this video. Thank you. When I'm out there in the woodlands I'm lookoing for minor details almost. But now I might take another look around.
Really enjoyed today's video, so much I watched it twice (so far!). I enjoy taking triptychs but I'm only just getting into tree photography. Definitely inspired me to get out in my local woods and embrace the chaos.👍 THANK YOU
Great stuff, Gary. I think if one good thing came out of this COVID times for us photographer has been the appreciation of our local areas. Most of us want to go on big trips to far off destinations but a lot of us now realize there is some great stuff right out our front doors. You had some great info for woodland shots and look forward to part two (or 3)👏🏻👏🏻
Several local forests near my home also have moss-covered trees that appear chaotic, but I so want to shoot them. Your advice on this video taught me how to approach such a scene and try harder to work with what is available. Very useful and inspirational video as your many others. Thank you!
Hey Gary, Just finished watching this Vlog. Your images were stunning. It just goes to show what can be achieved if we give a place some time as well as consideration as to how our final image should look. I must admit, you certainly have an eye 👀 for a photo, but what seems to capture my attention week in week out is how you manage to tell the story of your shot with your photo/video reels. Your vlogs and presentation of images/videos are excellent. The atmospheric background music choices are always very fitting to the surroundings. I never get fed up learning from you and gaining more knowledge on techniques/set up and approach. Much appreciated. Richie.x
Thanks for another inspiring video Gary. I enjoy woodland photography but quite often I can't see the wood from the trees so to speak. This video has helped considerably and has put another aspect on woodland photography. Out of interest what filter were you using?
Gary I really appreciate how well you demonstrate your technique. You explain your approach so well and I get so much from your vlogs. What an amazing woodland! Really enjoy you work.
Great vLog Gary. As a professional photographer, I like the way you portray your thoughts good or bad and the idea that not everyone, even professionals go out and capture the best shot without even trying every time. However that said the ones you captured in the woods are stunning and I cant wait for part 2 for this vLog. Thanks for sharing it just made me even more determined to get out and walk around my local woodland.
Great video Gary!..Being in lockdown here in the States has put a a lot of constraints on getting out and shooting.Woodland photography is my favorite and fortunately I live next to a woodland preserve but I've struggled lately getting the shots I really like but this video is awesome and just what I needed!.Thanks so much.Cheers..Mike Duponte.Tampa,Florida.
Huuuuge thanks for this video Gary! Among all videos related to photography this one is the best photography lesson I have attended for ages. Can’t wait to see what’s next. Respect Professor Gough...
Absolutely brilliant video Gary! You are so right about missing compositions when I watch my vlogs back I see so many that I think 'WHY DIDN'T I SEE THAT!😭😭' Love the pictures you got and looking forward to the next one! It's keeping me going in this lock down, thank you 👍
Hello Gary, as always lots of good and sensible content regarding woodland and the subject of triptychs. Two questions for you, which is unrelated to your subject. I see that many, many, vloggers have now done away with the cable release, do you feel that they are no longer necessary and that the 2-second timer is enough? Like you I have always been a Canon user and wondered would you advise others to use the new Canon R5 mirrorless camera and if not, then why? Once again thank you, I learn so many tips and tricks from you all which I take the best off and apply those to my landscape photography...
This is a awesome video! all this time I've been taking photos similar to yours and I think to myself 'well that's just interesting to me'. so often I find myself getting caught up in the rules and the norm of landscape photography that I completely look past so many compositions like these. once again figuratively speaking you've given us a kick in the bum and made us look outside the box. thank you Gary. 🙂
Hi Gary, the very first thing you did in this video was fit a filter, I presume it was a polariser, but you didn't mention it, and I would have thought it is probably a key element in these photographs. Great images and brilliant compositions. I love your attitude and pleasant nature. Thank you, I learn a lot from your channel.
Hi Bruce. I rarely use a polariser that’s why I forgot to mention it. It didn’t do anything though. It’s great in the woods when the sun shines though.
I really enjoyed this Gary I have recently found a location not to far from me in Kent that has a forest full of these types of moss covered trees I used a 24-70 lens and very happy with what I captured but now I’m going back with a telephoto lens to see what else I can get 👍
Hey Gary, I have only recently come across your RUclips Channel, but I am impressed with your no-nonsense direct, and informative style. I think, this is the second, or third, of your productions that I have viewed, and I have enjoyed them all. Keep up the good work!
When the video got to the 17:25 mark I was shouting/begging for you to turn around. The moss covered rocks looked good to me. Great video Gary, eh that's a ten!
Loving the video, training your eyes to see composition get s better with practise, sequencing photos is hard im trying to learn it so looking forward to the next video, ive been cutting up some prints small ones and pasting them on card to see if the work they look really,ly good , love the triptych
Another great video Gary. I have never thought of photographing woodland in this way. The first image was probably my favourite but there we a few other contenders. As Peter said about doing a video on macro i think it is a good idea and I'm sure a lot of people including myself will agree. I look forward to your next woodland video.
Hi Gary, great video as always, I see your not using your Lee’ filter holder and sporting a Haida M10 ? I think. I find your camera settings information very very helpful but could you please add what filter you are using when you use any (and none if your not using any) when you take us through your shot settings as this would also be a great help to learn about your use of filters in your shots, which are fabulous by the way! Thanks and stay safe!
Great video Gary, thanks. Looks like you have some nice interesting woodland in west Yorkshire. The trouble here for me is that in flat lincolnshire good quality woodland is difficult to find. I noticed that because you have hilly landscape it looks easier to eliminate the sky from your shots whereas here is a bit more difficult to do that. However I have persevered and have had some success mainly in ancient woodland with SSSI ratings. Just goes to show you can find great shots if you work at it. 👍
Going to try that in the woodland just down the road from us this weekend, some stunning trees in that woodland and I bet you could spend all day there.. great vlog
Great vlog that really caught my attention. I have always struggled to get interesting woodland shots due to facing a wall of green! I'll try and approach it differently now. Thank you Gary!
Love your pictures Gary, As a beginner I find it very inspiring the way you explain yourself when taking pictures,I'm not a youngster and I find it very helpful. Keep up the great work Gary👍
Very emotional!Absolutely breath taken photos Gary.I felt like I was right there with you. This kind of photography’s exactly what I love 💕 and don’t really see a lot of.Thank you so much for sharing !
Another way of learning to spot compositions, particularly when shooting locally, is to take a range of shots with the widest angle lens you have. Take them home and then, at you leisure, use the crop tool in your post processing software to zoom in to highlight areas you feel would make strong images. Then you can return later with a telephoto to get high resolution copies of your favourite compositions.
Brilliant Gary, very interesting vlog and the images were stunning i think i need to go to my local woodland and absorb what you've been teaching us and just have a go
Thank you for the advice for dealing with chaos! I run into this challenge in Japanese woodlands a lot. I will go on my next woodland shoot with a new set of eyes!
Thank you Gary beautiful photos must say it’s a beautiful woods all those moss Tkaczyk trees luminous green beautiful all twisted and contorted unfortunately my which is pretty boring in comparison love watching your videos love your enthusiasm thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Great video Gary, looking forward to part 2. I am interested in macro photography and was wondering if you could do a video on macro within the woodland theme that you are currently covering. Any advice on settings and composition would be great. I am just beginning and I have both the Nikon D3300 and the Fujifilm X-T1 with various lenses (I got carried away buying and I blame Mike Brown for the X-T1 : ) ).
Mike Browne is responsible for emptying plenty of bank accounts 😁😁 Such a great man. Did you ever see my interview with him? It's one of my favourite vlogs to date. ruclips.net/video/_viQ8-7QvUA/видео.html

Excellent as usual Gary - I find "embracing the chaos"a bit counterintuitive for myself - my approach to woodland photography is more as a technical exercise to improve composition and see through the chaos. Love the tryptic thing - keeps reminding me of something I need to do :)
Interesting vlog Gary - like the idea of making something out of the chaos. Sometimes you can't see the wood from the trees but you provided some good composition ideas there. I think woodland photography does need patience but the results can be really interesting.
I enjoyed that, woodland chaos I think I have been shooting that a lot lately and I love it, since lockdown I have been shooting local for 12 months now but because the law is so strict here I have only managed to get out with a camera about 5 times but I have taken plenty of pictures to play around with when I get home! Interesting vlog Gary - like the idea of making something out of the chaos. Sometimes you can't see the wood from the trees but you provided some good composition ideas there. I think woodland photography does need patience but the results can be really interesting.
Absolutely! Cheers Nick 👍👍
