Hey Gary, I am sitting here on a Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis, and you have made me feel like I was there with you. Well done. My greatest disappointment is that neither you or I got some fish and chips.
When I was a kid I lived in Blyth. I spent many many hours on that cold and wet jetty fishing. I also joined my first camera club at school just up the road in Newsham infant school. I have just finished my career as a photographer and videographer in paramedic education with the South Central Ambulance Service
Even such great looking East facing piers, such as Whitby, can be well worth photographing at sunset. Horizon on the bottom third works for me, as there looks like there was far more interest in the sky than in the sea.
Today in India we celebrate teacher's day (5th September) Thank you sir for you videos, I've learnt a lot from you. Though I'm a beginner but still what I'm today you've contributed a lot. Thanks from deep of my heart for every knowledge you shared. Stay safe be happy always. Sourav Mukherjee from Calcutta , India.
Hi Gary, just a quick note about when you are shooting in wet conditions. In fishing angler's have a small table at their side on which they have their bait and other items on and if it's raining they have a little umbrella which covers the table and the items on it keeping everything dry. One of these umbrellas would fit onto a leg of your tripod keeping your camera dry from rain and sea spray. The manufacturers of these umbrellas are Preston Inavations and can be found in most fishing shops. They retail at about £ 43 pounds which I think is a small price to pay to protect your camera and lens from sea spray. ( I use one myself). Best regards Nigel
Very nice Gary, we stayed at the Caravan Club site at Old Hartley overlooking St Mary's lighthouse and on our way back from Blyth we stopped at Seaton Sluice Chippie and the cod was so big she had to fold it in half to get it in the box! did us two nights. Sorry but had to tell you!
I have to laugh we were there (Blythe and Whitley bay) about a month ago and I said to my partner Sue, I wonder what Gary Gough would do at this place 😀. Really like the image @12.00 in, both the colour and black and white, also the photos at the end of the film are very pleasing too! As always love your images and your positive and encouraging narration, shame about the fish and chips! ☹️. We’re off on holiday at the end of the week to the West coast, Allonby on the Solway firth on the edge of Cumbria, really looking forward to creating some Gary Gough inspired long exposures, some bird watching and bird photography! Cheers Gary 👏👍😀
Missing those fish and chips was truely the saddest point of this video - I wont tell you how nice those are on the sea front there...! When I found Blythe, I tried that pier in windy conditions. Yeah.. think back to the video of you on that suspension bridge in scotland trying not to look down at the waterfall, and you will get me on that pier. I was clinging on for dear life feeling like it was all going to collapse! Beautiful photos to be had there tho, as you very much demonstrated! Thanks for posting this one 🥰 There is so much along that coastline, I cant wait to get back there....
Now I want to drive to the sea and experiment.... Great video sir; and I know your heartache about missing out on what your taste buds are craving because I too have stayed to long shooting and the restaurant had closed before I got there!
Great to see you working compositions in my local area Gary, somewhere I've photographed several times. Despite that you've given me ideas to work on when re-visiting what is an interesting location with different aspects being adjacent to a working harbour. Unfortunately for you, the local fish & chip restaurant caters for day visitors and locals rather than tourists, and will close well before sunset.
I was at Blyth a few weeks ago and got a lovely golden sky at sunrise with a similar composition, but i cropped in to remove the railings on the pier. Had Gary went to the beach a little further south ( less than 1 mile ) and parked by the battery, there are a few groins and 1 with a marker post for a great fine art long exposure shot
Great video, as always! Just had to say that I did really enjoy the image with the railing as foreground interest. And of course the other images are stunning too 🙂
Stunning images which bring back memories. Like you we travel to Northumberland a few times a year, in our case all the way from Devon, as it has such a wonderful coastline and fantastic "big" skies.
Gary, this was yet again a wonderful & enjoyable video to watch, I have not done a lot of sunset & sunrise photography ( lacking confidence in my own ability) lol. However you videos are changing how i feel about giving it a go.
Cracking video Gary, whenever I see a location I like on RUclips videos that I like the look of, no matter where they are, I tend to save it to my Google Maps. I’ve just looked at Blyth and though, to be honest it’s doubtful I’ll visit anytime soon, mainly due to financial constraints and worrying about what’s going to happen in the near future with the cost of living etc, the same as most, it looks like an amazing place. Those piers, the lighthouse, that awesome looking beach for when the weather is great ( it is the North East ), even things around the area, the old gun battery, the bandstand which normally wouldn’t do anything for me but being so close to the beach or could work, and not forgetting the beach huts which I know you like shooting from time to time. Definitely a place worthy of careful consideration. P.S. That photo with the lighthouse light pointing directly towards you is simply fantastic
I lived less than 20 miles away for 40 years and I have never seen the piers or beach at Blyth🤷♂️ . Great video which has inspired me to consider a similar shoot.
Another great video Gary. A very interesting place to photograph. Loved the light on the railings in the evening shoot. Great light for the morning shoot too. You captured some fantastic image's as usual. Loved the time lapse part too.
Lovely images Gary. If fish and chips is compulsory after shooting a sunset on the coast then the same must apply to a full English after sunrise or at the very least a bacon butty.
Amazing photos. You really need to come back to Cornwall and go to Bedruthan Steps at sunset. The sea stacks there with the sunset are beautiful and would make a really good picture. Last time I tried I had hot spots in my photos but after watching this video I may try again.

Hi Gary, wished i had known you where on my door step, am about a mile from where you parked up , could have shown you the chippys or fed & watered you for the night lol . Love the photos spent lots of time down there myself & about 5 miles either way. Great sun rise & red sky , clouds, are best between mid Dec to mid Jan :)
Looks like a cracking location with great light when you made your visit. Really glad you went for the 'more' Gary, well done again. Not sure I could do the 500 mile round trip before my wife wakes up 🤣
Here's a great tip for you Chris... take the wife to a really boring location and really drag out the day. She'll hate it so much, the next time you suggest going out with your camera she should suggest you go on your own. Boom! You can have that one 😁😁

Great video Gary, this is a local haunt for me, sorry you missed the chippy, as fish and chips from the chippy in the car park at the beach, are very good!
Fantastic location Gary, and some cracking images, the master of the fine art stuff for sure. No fish and chips is tragic, when I was in Newfoundland I pretty much lived on fish and chips on every outing. Loved the video and the images and the awesome photography tips as always, thanks for sharing.
Hello Gary from upstate New York. I very much look forward to your videos. You have some amazing areas to photography. Do you have a video on how you work out your time when using a 9 and 10 stop filter along with a polarizer or a site that you recommend to help figure out how to determine the time? I just picked up a Lee 10 stop and have a polarizer and would like to start having a good at long exposures. Thanks again for taking us along on your adventures and sharing your knowledge.
Another exquisite video from one of may favorite “teachers”. A lot of the info I will be using during my upcoming trip to the Hebrides. Keep the good things coming, Gary.
That’s a great video, I’m hoping to get to the Northumberland coast next summer, having seen it for the first time in April from a train - it looks spectacular. I think you actually had the best light from sunset when you were doing your piece to camera; the rusty railings on the pier were reflecting the colours of the setting sun, as was the other pier and the side of the lighthouse, and the sky was more interesting. But, by the time you began photographing, it looked like you had lost the best light.
Hi Gary 1st of all what amazing shots you've taken. I'm not far from Blyth. Totally fantastic place and I think I will try that place. Excellent work. (Tip) try the harbour view fish and chip shop next time your up in seaton sluice.
I am the same way; can't be farting around too long. I do more nature photography than the types of landscapes you do, but I go as far as to slap a 300mm on as soon as I exit the car so if I see birds or wildlife while traveling through the woods. I literally never walk around with all of my gear in the bag. I get so little time I try to take advantage of all of it. Most places I go I have been to many times, so I do take time to look around and try and find new ways to present it, but I always have my camera on the end of my tripod with the legs closed. When I see the composition I can plop the camera down and go to it. And I bring all my gear with me because I never plan anything, lol. I often go out with an idea in mind, but in a moment I can switch to everything from landscape and nature to macro or wildlife and birds. Whatever I find I can make best use of.
Exquisite shots Gary, loved the 240 sec sunset shot 👌 “comfort zone” I wish I had one 😂 every shoot is an experiment with my knowledge but I am learning from the master, keep it up it’s inspiring stuff 👍
Great video Gary, as ever. Do you ever use a reverse grad filter at sunrise/sunset? I can't recall ever seeing you use one and I wonder why that is - unless it's because you like to use two shots at different exposures for sea and sky and blend them?
Big mistake Gary! when in Blythe first stop fish n chips! you can take breath taking images whatever time you want to start and the ones you have just showed us....wow...they were wonderful, thank you for showing them all to us, now about that advice I gave you at the begining just do it! Thank you.
My Pentax k-3 came with a small cover that you are supposed to put over the eyepiece in certain long exposure situations, because it is said that stray light coming in through the eyepiece during that time can spoil your exposure. I notice that I have never seen anyone who does long exposures on RUclips use these covers, or have not noticed anyway. Have you ever used one?
Canon cameras tend not to suffer with light leaking in through the viewfinder. I do use a cover though during very long exposures on bright sunny days. 👍👍
Famous in movie circles as a location in the classic British gangster film “Get Carter”. Sadly the Blythe staithes are long gone. Nevertheless up to the usual standard Gary.

@@djstuc thanks for the reply. Yes, that probably would be a faster way. I had just never heard anyone mention about it before. 🙂
Famous in movie circles as a location in the classic British gangster film “Get Carter”. Sadly the Blythe staithes are long gone. Nevertheless up to the usual standard Gary.
Very enjoyable, but can I just say “less is more….” Doesn’t apply to cakes . Hope to see you soon!
It certainly does not 😂😂
Already looking forward to it 🫡

Pot Noodle - food of the gods?
More like food of the dogs, except any sensible dog would refuse it!
Ouch 😁
Surprised you didn’t get robbed in Blyth, did you see the beach huts further along? Much nicer
I did see the beach huts. They're pretty nice 👍👍
What makes good fish and chips?
Plenty of salt and vinegar with a kick of curry sauce for me 😁😁
Eee my old stomping ground, God's country.
Great photos Gary
