Landscape Photography using neutral density filters!

- In this video, I capture great Landscape Images on a summer's day using various filters. The results are excellent!
Last week, I headed to Berwick-upon-Tweed to capture landscape images. To be different, I opted to photograph during the middle of a summer's day. It was June the 29th to be precise! The light was quite challenging, to say the least! One minute it was bright and the next, storm clouds were rolling in. But this was what made the day that much better! The sky was amazing. The detail in the clouds was pretty special.
The reason why I opted for such conditions was straightforward. I always complain that whenever I'm out and about during the day I always noticed that the sky rarely, if at all ever looks as good at sunrise and sunset! So if that is the case then why aren't we as photographers taking more pictures during the day?
I took a range of different styles of pictures using various filters.
I know it's not to everyone's taste but I prefer the images captured using a 15-stop filter!
In case you were wondering why I opted for very long shutter speeds when the sky detail looked so good is simple, blurred detail is much better than just a blur, I hope that makes sense?

I’m glad all our wife’s are the same. “Does it really take that long to take a picture”
Wicked video.
Lol it’s in their nature I guess 😂😂
@@GaryGough 😂😂 absolutely
"You know what I mean... If I'm away for more than 15 minutes, she'll start moaning". I can sympathise, Gary. For me, it's "Haven't you taken that picture yet?" I feel your pain
Which is why you should only go out for photography with other photographers or alone. I know that the intent is to kindly share your time with her, but as you see, you’re not… she’s in the car, you’re there at the beach ;)
Can't agree with you folks more.
@@klyiu2006 👍😁
I’m heading to Scotland in 2 wks with my camera and I can already hear my amazing wife
I have more shots that include my wife's rear end as she gets bored and wanders into shot than I care to remember!
The images were outstanding gary.
Just in awe with the details in the clouds and results of that 15 stop filter. Truly brilliant!!!
Living in the Arizona desert, monsoon season is a great time for clouds, and really any time of day. Plus, monsoon cools everything down so you don't get third degree burns going for the mail.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I am motivated to experiment a bit more. Amazing photographs too.
Thanks, Gary! Stunning, awesome, beautiful. And that rainbow.
Nice and clear explanations. Thank you.
As a weekend warrior landscape photographer summer sunrise is silly o'clock & weekends 9 times out of 10 sunrise & sunset is rubbish. I have one day to get out & about so I do shoot during the day. I stay home when it is blue cloudless skies. I do pick my location carefully according to various weather forecasts. Dartmoor during the day with a great sky oooh.
When it comes to a long exposure King. Great images.
I love how you transport your enthusiasam and your fire for your photography. Great videos!
Amazing. Funny but Berwick is a real hidden gem of a place.
Not been there since my childhood. Now I live at the other end of the country
Thanks for the video! Not only is it interesting to see the use of filters to take long daytime exposures, but your excitement and enthusiasm really hold ones attention. Wonderful shots
Have only been watching you for a few weeks but I am learning so much. Thank you Gary
Thank you so much. You have inspired me to go out and play and to have fun with my photography. I have been in a lull with my photography and your videos have encouraged me to get back out and learn about long exposures. Thank you again.
Another belter of a video Gary. Absolutely love your enthusiasm for trying out new things and just experimenting. You're a blast every week mate 👍👍
Thank you kindly 👍👍
Gary, I look forward to your videos. I learn something new each week. Thank you :)
Don't blame your wife. Photography is fun, watching a photographer husband is boring! Excellent information, thankyou.
I was deeply engrossed in this video Gary. I am at present trying open up my LE photography again. It's going to take a few trips but you have just inspired me even more....Thank you Gary, stay safe, hope you didn't get to much of a 'ear ache' when you got got back to the van........
Always get earache 😂😂 cheers
I have went out during the day a lot and the skies are wonderful absolutely loved all your images as always Gary 15 stop being my favourite but that rainbow was amazing ! Great footage once again thank Gary 👍
The big skies in Northumberland alone make the county well worth a visit. Love all the images and thanks for taking the time to explain in detail what you are doing.
Thanks Valerie 👍👍
I’ve been thoroughly enjoying IR photography during the midday hours when the sun is shining full blast. Enjoyed your photos here, thanks for the tips.
I really enjoy watching your vids especially on a Sunday morning, please continue doing them!
This is a mathematical sum deduced to the end result. Take away for me, don't be afraid of experimentation and its culmination in exposing the limitations of artistic freedom. Enjoyed it.
Those were awesome pictures. I can’t wait to try this out!
Amazing video on Long exposure photography in the middle of the day Gary, incredible to see that rainbow like that. Really appreciate the info you provide us to hopefully improve our own work. Thank you.
Cheers Ross 👍👍
Brilliant as usual
The best thing about this video is how enthusiastic you are. Loving it :-)
Cheers 👍
Happy days, rainbows! Very informative, thanks, Gary
Those last photos with the rainbow, what a wonderful surprise. Great video, as usual. See you soon!
Absolutely stunning as ever Gary !
Gary, that was an excellent presentation and content and right to the point!. Thanks for the simplicity.
Fantastic work Gary.So enjoy your long exposure stuff
Love the 15 stop filter images.
Super educational vlog Gary, very I formative as usual. It's good to experiment. Cannot wait for your next installment. 😁
Stunning..❤❤
Love the pictures and I love doing long exposures :)
I have a 16 stop which I don't use all that often but I swear by my 13 stop filter, good at midday when overcast, enables me to capture longer exposures than the big stopper without being ridiculously long. One of the best things about long exposure photography is you can shoot pretty much when you want.
Super captures as always👍
So true. Cheers Ant xx
Excellent information Gary and very well explained thank you for sharing it with us
Very welcome
Thanks for showing me your explanation using the histogram, makes great sense now . Cheers.
I thoroughly enjoyed the video Gary, as always. Keep them coming.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍👍
Love those shots! The little bit of blue sky looks fantastic. Surprisingly, l love the portrait aspect ones the most. Usually, l'm not that fond of portrait aspect.
“The middle of the day has so much detail in the sky. Amazing. Let’s take a 7 minute exposure to blur out the sky.”
So nice pictures as always 👍👍
thank you for this video - it's full of information and you are an adorable person
I se my pasión in yours! 💓💓
I always go out at everyone says it’s the wrong time of the day loved the filter tutorial thx 👍🏻
Fabulous work. I love them they look fabulous.👍🖖
Thank you 👍👍
..excellent video...not surprised , as they always are...
Very kind Gordon 👍👍
Absolutely brilliant love love love it 😊
Cheers Steve 👍👍
You are so flipping right Gary , I can't recall the last time I had decent clouds at sunrise 😵💫
You had me at the mention of filters.... try as I do I just can't wean myself off long exposures 😅
18:47....Love that image 👌
You've given me the kick I needed to get put in daylight for a change ,cheers for that 👍👍
Sunrise and sunsets are stupidly early and late so it makes sense :)
Excellent vlog love how you talk abot the information 👍
As always a great watch with stunning images Gary 😃
Cheers 👍
Thanks!
Very kind of you, thank you xx
Thank you Gary that was most interesting.

Great stuff as always Gary cheers.
Lucky with that rainbow! Those rainbow shots are great!
Cheers Vern 👍👍
Absolutely superb, looks like I dont have to get up early to get some interesting long exposure images. The pictures are stunning. Thanks for the hardwork
Many thanks! Cheers Paul 👍👍
Nice! And thanks
Last half dozen worked out well, see the rainbow came back for you
I was lucky but it wouldn't set behind the lighthouse, damn! :)
I like it
Nice work Gary, thanks for taking the time, hope the misses was not too unhappy.
Hey Gary, those are some nice clicks. Enjoyed your video 🫱🏻🫲🏽
I'm new to your channel, and very impressed with your enthusiasm, ND filter use, and your photographs are amazing. I like the 10 stops the best !!
Loved the vlog Gary, and like you, I rarely get out and do long exposure during the midday. However, I have the same set of filters as you and will now make an effort to do more with the 10 & 15 stop filters. Keep up the good work.
Fantastic work, glad I found your channel!
Cheers Phil 👍👍
Great video as always.
Good Job Gary.😜
Great images as always Gary. Just getting over a knee replacement so have had time to watch loads of your vlogs and I have throughly enjoyed them all to the point that I forced myself out and hobbled to my local seafront to do some long exposure shots. Paul
Another great video!!! Thanks!
Cheers José 👍👍
Great timelapse and video as usual Gary.
Enjoyed the drone footage of the lifeboat training hero's.
Great image's as usual.
Cheers Tim 👍👍
Thanks
Very kind of you, thank you xx
Brilliant Gary as always.
Cheers Mark 👍👍
👍 Great inspiration 🙏😃
Some cracking shots there Gary and love your enthusiasm with the clouds. I often comment on the clouds when out and about and probably non photograpic minded folk think I'm totally barking. Obviously I am, but sometimes I just want them to stop the car so I can get some shots or timelapse in. Keep up the great series, always enjoyable to watch and love those drone cutaways of the RNLI btw!
I'm very interested in this particular video of ND filters use; I'm a day time kind of photographer since I'm generally on a fairly long hike in the Scottish Highlands and I've seen some stunning cloud formations. I've not dabbled that much with my ND filters to date, but you have perked my interest now. Glad you went over your "reverse steps" and it did make sense.....Thank you 😊
All the photos are amazing, but I think I like the longest exposures best. The rainbow photos are a great capture. Once again, it’s a wonderful video. Nice work!
Cheers Clark 👍👍
Interesting video as always. Well done Gary.
Loved this outing Gary!. I thought I was the only one who did the reverse engineering thing....LOL! It's great fun to experiment and end up with a great image. Looks like you did get that rainbow in the end. Cheers, thanks for sharing 👍
great experimenting Gary, yes and stunning images to
Cheers Jim 👍👍
Wow.... only just found your channel and immediately subscribed.
I have never seen such Witchcraft.... those 15 stop images are sublime.
Thanks for sharing
Great video and shots Gary
Learning a great deal from your perspective using nd filters.
Great images and videos. I have learned a lot watching your channel. Than you.
Absolutely adore your “Long Exposure” work. Simply beautiful images GG x
Very kind as always Richie 👍👍
Have we fallen out? You weren't the first person to watch and comment! 😁😁
@@GaryGough No chance In that ever happening. :-)
I’ve been hungover all day today only watched it late afternoon xx
Lovely shots, all of them. My personal choice when you were playing between the 10 stop and the 15 stop was the 10, because I liked the bit if detail the 10 left behind. But on the slideshow at the end when there was no way to tell which, it did not matter. Again, lovely shots, all.
I need to work on my filter game a bit more, but I don't really have access to the water. A few small creeks, but no waterfalls, and definitely no beaches, lol.
great shots! they're all beautiful. I prefer the ones that have a little more detail in the sky (clouds), so faster shutter speed. But it's cool to see what you can do at really long shutter speeds.
Absolutely amazing way you teach us newbies. Thank you.
Liked and subscribed.
Right, I'm Inspired. I'm off to the beach to try out your tips.
Excellent video
Great photos again Gary
Many thanks. Cheers Peter 👍👍
Another great vlog Gary. It’s a pity that the lighthouse kept getting in the way!
Just kidding, it gives a great sense of perspective.
Thanks for keeping the channel going, it’s always the highlight of the week!
Hi Gary. As im an amature photographer. Id just like to say a HUGE thanks for your video's . Ive seen so many video's of other photographers that explain this and that, but you just tell it in such a way its so easy to pick up and understand alot easier. Like you said in an old video" it doesnt have to be complicated " Love watching your vids and seem like a great guy too👍
Keep up the great work.
CHEERS. 🍻🍻
Very kind of you to say. Cheers 👍👍
Completely agree... Been on a binge watching a lot of your stuff.... Really great info in a low key delivery.... Cheers mate...
Nice! So true i can't bring my wife with me taking pictures 😆
Great, thanks
wonderfully helpful to this newbie to the use of ND filters. thanks for the effort and sharing. thumbs up.
Glad it was helpful! Cheers 👍👍
Love your music in this video Gary😊.. As for clouds we haven't had any in my region for months now.. We in winter here in Namibia and I'm at the coast in Walvis Bay.. And we just don't get much rain in winter.. Down south in Cape Town definitely you get loads of winter rain and storms.. But here we only get rain in summer.. So it's quite unique I guess.. But even here at the coast we get less rain then the inland.. So I can actually count about 10 or 15 days we'll actually have beautiful rain clouds.. We get mist belts plenty but not rain clouds. So our winter is coming yo an end by September we'll be getting warmer and I'm looking forward to my scattered clouds to capture so beautiful sunset images I'm so passionate about 😊
15 stop filter. Who'd a thunk? Not me. But now?...very cool!
Lovely images and good to see you work through them for comparison, can’t wait to attempt this when I get to the sea in Orkney in 5 weeks time 🤞👌
Lucky you Garry. Have a great trip 👍👍
Great Gary. I haven't done much long exposure stuff but this is inspiring. You converted me a while ago now, was never a fan but now I can see the beauty in it. I was thinking of your wife stuck in the van though lol.
