Great video. Always makes even reviews of cameras I’ve seen dozens of reviews on interesting. You can add luts to the camera. They are just baked in as you film.

Great review! I got the R5C about three months ago and it’s been fantastic. The quality of the photos and video are amazing (be ready for large file sizes though). The only drawbacks I’ve noticed are the thickness of the fan, and the battery life in video mode. To be perfectly honest the battery life in video mode isn’t a major concern for me. If I’m on a photo shoot and want to switch to video mode quickly for a few quick clips, no problem. If I’m planning an actual video shoot where I’m expecting to record for prolonged periods, I just plan to put a cage on it and rig it out with an external power source like a v-mount battery. For anyone deciding between the R5/R6 and the R5C, it really just depends how much video you need to shoot (specifically how long… potential overheating). The R5C is great and I have no regrets but, if I only had to shoot short videos occasionally I would definitely stick with the regular R5 or R6. Now it’s just a matter of time for my bank account to recover so I can replace some old EF glass with some new RF goodness. Cheers!

Love your reviews. Watching this is like watching NHL highlights, insofar as both are way out of my league. But this doesn't detract from the educational/entertainment value in the slightest, and helps give me a better understanding of what features/limitations to consider when I do finally buy my much less expensive camera. Super handsome video. Great coverage of the R5C. I would most likely consider the R5C for visual effects use with the 8K RAW video setting. Being able to shoot RAW 8K gives you a ton of latitude in post. Thanks for another awesome review. Canon should give you an R5C for your review.

The camera I use with dual base ISO at 12,000 is awesome. it's also not a 'cinema' camera, and you're not using that 12000 setting when you have control of lighting. You're using it when you don't have that control.
Not against the R5 C though. Our Canon rep dropped a few off at our office and they're pretty incredible. Face only has been my favourite feature so far for the kind of work we do. A lot of doco style stuff where I want to track someone until they leave the frame, without it focusing on the background immediately after. Wouldn't switch from the C200 or XF605 though because the internal ND is a bigger selling point for me.
The image is razor sharp in this one! Well done, Mark. By the way, I watched your HLG3 video but I'm still confused as to how to effectively use zebras. Should you keep them on for highlights at 100+ for HLG3 and 95+ for HLG2 if shooting in low-light? Or just stick to no-profile for low-light video? Shooting mostly short travel videos with a6600 plus sigma trio. Thanks for considering.
I would stick to no profile in lowlight. For HLG3, if using the LeemingLUT, you can do 95 for zebras on highlights, or 85 on skin tone.

I have the R5 and have no use for a cinema camera but I still loved this review. The image is amazing but I focus mostly on photos and occasional video for wildlife and the R5 for me works really well. Maybe when I retire I can get into my second career and shot video if so I will check this one out. Cheers.

I think the review was pretty in depth! Great job! I did have one question about the R5C. For some odd reason, I could never get the AF Method to do Face Detec and Eye Detec. I have the RF 70-200 f2.8 and I did switch it to One Shot but it’s still not working. If you can help me in any way, that would be much appreciated! Thank you!

For documentary interviews, you want to shoot into the shadow side not the bright side. Of course, one can always decide to do it differently, but being used to shooting interviews it just threw me off. Love the review, the R5C seems like such a potent piece of equipment.
I kind of got stuck in the club - so I just had to do that angle - but for sure I wanted the other side 😂. Luckily it was just some prep work!!
5:15 Is anamorphic mode avalable on any lenses?
well, yes, but you’ll need an anamorphic lens to get the proper aspect ratio. if you put a normal lens on anamorphic mode, the footage will be squished and stretched.
Ac couple pointers:
- battery: the reason it drains battery in video mode (except when you play a video), is because the sensor is always active. The camera records ahead of time, hence it uses battery.
- autofocus: look up the "deaf director". Yep, that's another YT channel. He did a video on how to use the autofocus on the R5C correctly. The video autofocus of the R5C is nothing like any of the Canon mirrorless bodies. It's CinemaOS and you sort of set it up differently. Once you know this, it'll be spot on and better than anything you've seen.
- internal NDs: if you use EF lenses, you can use Canons EF-RF filter adapter and get your inline filters that way. If you use RF lenses, you can use Kolari magnetic clip-in filters, that go behind the lens.
- XLRs: The R5C has (like Panasonic and Sony) a multifunction hotshoe. And Teac Tascam have developed a dual-XLR audio module for Canon, that clips right in, is powered from the camera and gives you 2 XLRs + the 2 channels on the stereo-in on the camera. So you have 4 audio tracks in your recording. Something otherwise only found in the Panasonic Lumix GH6.
- No CLOG2: The R5C does not have the dynamic range for CLOG2, so Canon does not include it. It would just add noise in the shadows. Yes, we know, that as a Sony shooter, you get all the SLOG profiles, but that's a marketing gimmick. If you use a LOG profile, that is designed for more dynamic range, than the camera you use, then all you get is more noise.
With the NDs, I was pointing out that having a internal NDs that are switchable is an advantage of cameras like the c70 as well as xlr Inputs. Sure, you can buy accessories, but most of Canon’s regular cinema cameras have them in there. But again, this thing is made to be compact and a photo camera as well. The battery issue is just something you have to work around even if there’s a good reason it drains. So again, I have to mention it. I’m sure you’re right about the Canon reasoning for C-Log2, but seeing as the sensor is capable of 8k with great dynamic range in the measure of over 13 stops, I think it could be capable of C-Log 2 in 4k - but perhaps it just doesn’t make the cut. Lastly, I used the same settings autofocus settings as the Deaf Director, but it still lost focus. Whole area - tracking on. It’s always possible I didn’t track the subject correctly, hopefully I can do some more tests. Thanks for the discussion. 👍
Fair enough. I just figured, I'd mention it. The R5C is a hybrid, so there are compromises to the cinema side of it for obvious reasons. And you are right, it's nearest competitor is probably the S1H. Nothing else gets near it.

Would this camera be good for a barber doing tutorials? Would auto focus be reliable compared to Sony A7RV?
The autofocus is not as good as the Sony 94 in fact the Canon R5 or R6ii. If I were you I would get the Canon R6ii or Sony A7iv for what you want to do.

That is a stellar looking camera. Are thinking you might want something like that for your documentary work? I feel like you can be more than happy with the S5 since you need to manual focus anyhow and it will give you comparable and in some cases more capability with the exception of the 8k video but you would get.. was it 6.2k? Something like that.

check out my photo walk with the zv-e10. I used the Tamron 28-70 in that one and found it great. Similar quality to the sigma.

On ZV-E10 it's a 42-105 lens

Tough to say. the C70 offers nd and better connections and battery life and dynamic range. But the R5 C is full frame and 8k and a great photo cam. maybe I should buy both?? 🤣

Yes - the r5 has better autofocus. the R5C uses their cinema autofocus which isn’t as good

Yeah except they are clamping down on 3rd party glass, if you buy canon it looks like your ONLY choice for NEW lenses HAS to be canon. Wish they would open up for other manufacturers for the lenses😔

No - the grip cannot supply the voltage needed unfortunately.
