Similar journey for me, except never got to make YT my full time thing, just a hobby. The R5C was my first big expensive jump into cameras and I have been so happy with it. Though all the RF glass I have is now worth way more than the camera itself maybe in retrospect I should have gotten EF glass w/ adapter. It was overkill for my RUclips needs, but now I am well equiped for not just my YT hobby but also professional work in the photo & video side of the house. I never missed IBIS at all, even telephoto work, and I am happy for what the R5C adds in video over the R5. Waiting for the R5MK2 to decide to get a 2nd R5C or the R5MK2 because I battle the same issue I have it rigged for video work, and need it for photo work. So many times I am doing event photos with a cage and side handle and stuff just so I wouldnt change it up lol. So adding a 2nd camera one for photo and one for video, but having a backup for both or capacity for dual camera recording for video (Though I do have an R8 now also for my webcam) P.S. getting the new RF 35mm 1.4 VCM today! I got that specifically for video work and as a way to test if I want to get the 24-105 2.8 USM Z I think I'll do some kind of review of that lens soon.
You don’t need to rig the camera up crazy, run and gun for video, just put a v mount battery in your pocket or pouch get a long enough Usbc cord and go. It’s been working fine for me.
Long time lurker of your channel and love your content. This video speaks to me because I am in the process of filming a documentary, which is being pitched to Netflix. The first thing I did was look at the Netflix approved cameras and fell in love with the R5 C from @CanonUSA . I haven't purchased it yet, but this just solidified my decision because I respect your technical knowledge.
So I have the same camera and did a video for the Mini 3 Pro the other day. So when I am away from the lens about 15 or so feet I sat there and spoke about its amazing auto focus. Of course it was out of focus but to no problem with the cam and just me not setting it. All in all I absolutely love the R5c and it has been awesome for both stills and the insane Cinema side. Its like The Hulk without the green body :)
It is a first video ever, of all I had seen, which so honestly puts the things about this camera. I agree with everything what is said here, and using this camera myself for over two years now, I can do nothing but take my hat off to you. I also do not like some quirks in this little monster, but still for my personal needs, which I can see are very in pair with yours, this is the best camera out there, full stop. I also record exclusively with RAW and I do it because of what this camera delivers, just to have the biggest possible freedom in postproduction, which opens the whole world for me. And photography... oh boy... I fell in love with photography again, and again just because what R5C delivers... Thank you for this video, it makes me happy I am not alone what I feel for this small black box. :)
What I miss mostly in the R5C is the missing animal-AF, but since the video OS got this option (in the C400), I hope that this will come in the next firmware upgrade. That would be great. Without that, I am lost when I try to shoot little birds in a tree with AF, and in Manual Fotos I am not so good...
You inspired me to use mine more. I normally shoot with a couple C70’s that i love but I’m gonna give this camera more time! Internal NDs are really handy but I have a nice lens option or 5 to work with. The Canon image is really a thing!
Really enjoyed the video and have an R5C too, wanted to let you know it is impossible for any camera to downsample the sensor when shooting raw video into a lower resolution, if you want lower resolution you have to record less data by applying a crop. The 8K file reflects all of the resolution required to sufficiently represent all of the data recorded on that size sensor with that many pixels. A great workaround that you are likely familiar with would be speed-boosting. You can use a speed booster and shoot 5.9k super 35 raw with a full frame FOV - just an idea!
I have the R6 on still side and the BMPCC4K for video. Have considered ditching both for the R5C as hybrid for both photo & video. I love the image of the Pocket 4K, very filmic and I’m a fan of softer film looks. I heard the R5C is very sharp on the video side which I’m not sure I’m a fan of. Also I like shooting in 4K raw, have to use for 8k. Also I already have the RF 24-70 which I obviously can’t use on the BM cam, but would be great to try on the R5C. Any thoughts on this? Do you think it would be wise to go for the R5C as my all in one?
You got me. You convinced me. I’ve been wanting to get a red Komodo super bad for RUclips. I’ve been on the fence about losing some easy use features. You’ve convinced me that it’s a stupid idea as cool as it is. I’ll rent then probably get an R5C.
I use it mostly for Stock photography, I started with the full cage and hated it, got the half cage and it is enough, I do take mine to field trips but I made a small setup (I just shoot 8K Raw) and then post to 4K
You might wanna hold off on calling the third party lens situation solved. All of the lenses announced by tamron and sigma are APS-C and I doubt that that is a coincedent. Canon is still doing canon things.
Or just maybe aps-c was the area that needed the most help lens wise, makes complete sense why they would do the aps-c lens first as it is the area of greatest weakness in the rf lineup and yes they have full functionality on the rf mount. I’m sure the full frame lens will come once the rf aps-c demand is met.
i lost my gh5s to usps during covid, but it was my perfect camera for a minute.. it's insane urs is only on webcam duties lol 😆 but understandable given the circumstances
almost makes me want a Canon camera again but the Sony FX30 has got its grubby hands around my neck and since I don't do face cam content anymore, its very hard to justify new cameras or glass
And yet it’s a feature for some (like me, buying it to shoot video that my IBIS-having R6ii can’t do very well). The R5ii might be good option for you, with the fan-battery grip to keep things cooled down.
Ok I hear you on the Micro HDMI but shooting with my M50 and 90D with a Shinobi and Ninja i havent really had any trouble with the mini or micro HDMI. Thats in comparison to my old 60D that constantly squirmed out and worried me a lot . Ive basically stopped using my rig's HDMI security thing-a-majig. I get the worry. I dint shoot as much as many folks do. But i also havent seen many actual cases of it breaking or ppl missing shots from it falling out
I’ve seen tons of micro hdmi breaks. I’ve broken it on 2 cameras on jobs, and broken tons of cables. In fact it’s the only kind of cable/port I’ve had ANY breakage issues with. Plenty of people complain about various usb plug breakage and I’ve never had issues, only with micro hdmi lol
@@EposVox No doubt they happen. It's interesting tho. I've watched IDK 40+ reviews/overviews/X-time-later/follow up videos on the R5/R5c/R6/R3. Very much looking forward to seeing how the Canon R5 II steps between the R5 and the R5C. Sure it probably wont have 8k but maybe 4k 60 raw while still having IBIS and all its photo capabilities? That would be sweet. Pretty sure the R5C has false color and a bunch of other things that could be added to the R5 II as well. All the rumors point to a reveal this month. If nothing gets announced though, R5C is top of my list. Heard they improved battery life a lot too with firmware updates for the R5C too. Which I heard was an early problem (like no third party lenses).
Very interesting to see how you went about your artistic and, later, business journeys! Could you see yourself using something smaller and cheaper? Like the Sony FX3/30, a6700 or small Fuji, Canon or Blackmagic options? I guess those don't really get you that high of a resolution, or features, but they're much easier to bring along with you. Realistically speaking, an a6700 or Fuji could make for a nice standalone photo-camera, if you left your current setup, how it is now, nonetheless.
Yeah I mean, my easy-carry photo camera is now a Fuji X-Pro 3, but I just… don’t like shooting with it much. I like the size and I LOVE a specific wide angle lens on it, but otherwise, something about the flow of crop cameras just really doesn’t vibe with me for photo shooting. The difference in my flow shooting with my R5 C and the Fuji are night and day despite me investing in a ton of glass for the Fuji. Probably selling it off soon
I only alluded to it, didn’t say it. Yeah I’m not a fan of the smaller Sony’s for anything but video (and no raw) and the BMD aren’t photo cams and no autofocus. FX3/30 would not be a smaller body.
I guess 8192 x 4320 is the best they managed to do with full sensor readout so even they implement smaller aspect ratios (squarer) they will be cropped from this because IIRC the readout time depends on number of rows.
Awesome content. I bought the canon c70 and r5c for my previous work place. now that I need upgrade my person 5d4/1dx for video I am considering the r5c again. It's a hybrid shooters dream. I also wished it had xlr for audio. Can you share your 8k raw workflow? storage solution how you archive etc?
C70 seems like a beast! I wanted one for a while. Very cool. Yeah I wish the R5C had mini XLR or something. Yeah I’ll have a video on my storage/organization flow soon-ish actually
A lot of filmmakers don't like IBIS. Because if there is vibrations the IBIS can shake even when its turned off. Top Gear was filming with the GH5 and had IBIS turned off and the footage was wavy and it was really bad they went back to the GH4. The issue was they had the GH5 on snowmobiles. I saw another video about some RUclipsr asking his friends what camera they use. One guy said Panasonic GH5S because it does not have IBIS. He showed a clip of a car driving on a dirt road and the camera was inside and the footage with IBIS looked bad but the GH5S looked better. Every one of these camera companies should make one camera model with no IBIS. Most of the time IBIS works great but there are times you will wish you did not have it.
Oh yeah for sure! Even in some of the broll for this video (R6 with IBIS on) it was affecting my shots negatively. I just wish they could better secure it so when it’s off it’s “really off” and not have those downsides, so you can get the best of both.
@@EposVox I know Olympus uses springs for there IBIS and Sony uses magnets. I don't think it can really be locked down 100% unless they added in some kind of special lock system.
Hi, thank you for the video, but I have one question, you say you don't like shooting in LOG, but you do it with RAW... I thought when you set REC709 and RAW, then you see everything like you want it in the R5C but the recording is RAW, no matter if you set CLOG, clog 3 or rec709, with RAW it is always the same and the preset doesn't matter in any way for rhe outcome in Davinci. Or does the preset matters somehow? After shooting in Rec709 RAW I usually set it to c log3 in Davinci. And up to now I thought it is exactly the same like shooting with preset rec709 just with the benefit, that the small monitor of the r5c looks like it should, instead of the LOG colors.
Yeah if you set it to Rec709 in RAW, you can still grade with LOG in post for sure. That’s what I meant when I said I still use it in RAW. But if I’m shooting non-RAW I never like using LOG
As everyday Sony A7IV user, I recently started using Canon R5C at work and there are things you haven't mentioned that I find sooo much more pleasant when working with the Canon: display size and quality (same goes for the viewfinder), 4K120 fps recording without any crop and overall lightweightness of the package for its size but Canon has also another stupid quirk: you can't directly transfer videos from the camera when connecting with USB to your computer and you need an external card reader. It's ridiculous in this day and age, the dedicated software interface on Mac also looks very much outdated compared to Sony. Sony also has a solution similar to what you've shown to Panasonic but Clear Scan Shutter looks so much easier to use! I've got to try it out. I cannot agree more about the Micro HDMI port, why on earth would they use it in such an expensive piece of gear???
With the Sony I don't find shooting photos as enjoyable due to the screen being trash, even though I don't have access to such a nice glass I use on Sony (only RF 24-105 L), it cannon be said how much using Canon is more enjoyable with its bright and high resolution screen. Wants me to transfer to Canon but higher lens prices and limited variety have me stay with Sony (and the magnificent Tamron 35-150 2-2.8).
This is very interesting! I hadn’t considered that the screen was *that* good, but I suppose it is. I’m usually still wanting to use a 5-7” monitor in the studio, but I do enjoy the screen when I’m out shooting photos. I’ve not used a direct camera connection for transferring footage/photos since the early 00s, so I hadn’t even considered it! I do think Canon isn’t quite sure how to best use the USB C port
@@EposVox from what I know, they’ve just cheaped out for a USB 2.0 class port, same story as with the small HDMI port: it’s the beancounters who decided 😅Dedicated monitor is great with a rig and once you put on a cage but I find something particularly inspiring in shooting with camera on a strap/gimbal only and yeah, for that, Canon is so much more of a complete package than Sony (I’ve heard that A7RV and A9III have new and better screens but I still don’t know if they have the resolution and brightness of Canon ones)
Hi! So, do you think could bettter z8 since it is a modern hybrid camera instead or the R5C , considering R5C is getting down the price because of battery limitations mini HDMI and the need of more power to get acsess of 8k video ?
At least the A9III is the "perfect" camera for me(also sony is cheaper than the other brands in my country, same price of a z9 for the a9iii). Only compromise is the low MP and i need an Atomos recorder to capture RAW. Of course i wish it had the ability in camera to do that and also to shoot Anamorphic, but a GS is something i wanted for a long time and i was waiting to buy a new camera around this time, it was just perfect timing for me. I wish i also was able to have a nikon and a canon, there is some real gems (lens wise) in those systems like the "Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 Sports DG APO OS HSM" THAT YOU CAN EVEN USE IN A Z9!! or the amazing lenses canon brings like the recent Canon RF 24-105mm F2.8. Would be nice if you did more camera videos, i think they are interesting from your perspective that is different than normal camera yt channels.
The 24-105 would be baller for my hike trips and stuff for sure. Thanks! I hope I can do more in time. It’s weirdly harder for me to review stuff I use daily haha
Have a question about you course. I want to try av1 streaming on arc a380 + intel i3-12100f as a dedicated streaming pc. The only problem I have I don’t is this enough to handle streaming only av1 pc. I want to use my Elgato HD60X for signal capture but i don’t sure that it supports intel gpu and would it be enough i3-12100f for it also?
What resolution are you planning on streaming? For basic 1080p/1440p streaming, the A380 will handle it fine. With that CPU, I wouldn’t plan on having a ton of fancy video graphics and effects in OBS, but for basic streaming and capture it would be fine.
@@EposVox 1080p 60. Also I think about i5-12400f. It’s not such a big difference in price. I’m only choosing pc parts now so I can change some components.
Canon 700D/Rebel T5i and later the 6D mark 2.. Ohh boy that 6D mark 2... I still miss it sometimes. There is no such thing as the perfect cameral :) the closest to day would be the Fuji GFX100 mark 2 or for normal humans the panasonic lumix s5S2x I own two Canon C70 with speedboosters making them EF mount.-.. damn it CANON!!! EF mount... and I own a R5C with the ND filter adapter.. then again EF mount (Canon why do you keep doing this to us) I got an R3 for sport clients fotos and some video, because the C70 is shit with auto focus for video and because the R5C only keeps battery for an hour with the battery grib. What a shitty compromise. The Clean scan on C70 and R5c is garbage and for the most part doesent work.. but the one on the R3 is amazing. Now they stop making EF glass.. But the RF 24-105 looks awesome.. but you cant use that one on the C70 because its a crop sensor camera and you lose the 24 mm and get an 38 mm instead.. On the the R5C you lose the ND if you use it on there and that camera does not have XLR for a professionel mic. Hell even the C500 mark 2 is full frame with NDs but miss an RF mount... The C300 mark 3 is EF mount and crop sensor.. Come to think about it.. there is no such thing as a real cinema camera with RF mount, a full frame sensor with build in NDs to fit that RF 24-105 f2.8 lens :P Canon what the hell are you doing.. wake up pls. - That sony or Nikon system begins to look nicer and nicer each day :P

@@EposVox I know Olympus uses springs for there IBIS and Sony uses magnets. I don't think it can really be locked down 100% unless they added in some kind of special lock system.
Yeah not surprising
@@EposVox from what I know, they’ve just cheaped out for a USB 2.0 class port, same story as with the small HDMI port: it’s the beancounters who decided 😅Dedicated monitor is great with a rig and once you put on a cage but I find something particularly inspiring in shooting with camera on a strap/gimbal only and yeah, for that, Canon is so much more of a complete package than Sony (I’ve heard that A7RV and A9III have new and better screens but I still don’t know if they have the resolution and brightness of Canon ones)
have you had the chance to use a modern slow mo camera like the freefly ember?
I have not. Seems like cool tech
Tried to follow this but my head started spinning. Gave up before you got to the R5C. Oh well...
Sucks to suck
Hi! So, do you think could bettter z8 since it is a modern hybrid camera instead or the R5C , considering R5C is getting down the price because of battery limitations mini HDMI and the need of more power to get acsess of 8k video ?
You don’t need more power to access 8K, just 8K60.
I tried both, loved the Z8, but for a video-first workflow, R5 C won for me
@@EposVox thank you for the info I really appreciate the advice
awesome video
Thanks!
Get a X0.71 speed booster and shoot 6K raw full frame
plus earn extra stop of light with any of you lenses (except the anamorphic i guess)
=]
I love my g7. It has been “upgraded” to a pocket3.
Yeah I had the original Pocket for a while and felt like it was a teeny tiny G7 haha
Currently is only APS-C 3rd party lenses for Canon
The 24-105 would be baller for my hike trips and stuff for sure.
Thanks! I hope I can do more in time. It’s weirdly harder for me to review stuff I use daily haha
DaVinci Resolve can’t handle ProRes Raw?! I am just starting to switch to it but didn’t know that.
WTF! Why??
ProRes Raw is an awful format with very limited support. You can thank Apple and BMD for not agreeing on this haha
I think it's really enough
What resolution are you planning on streaming?
For basic 1080p/1440p streaming, the A380 will handle it fine.
With that CPU, I wouldn’t plan on having a ton of fancy video graphics and effects in OBS, but for basic streaming and capture it would be fine.
@@EposVox 1080p 60. Also I think about i5-12400f. It’s not such a big difference in price. I’m only choosing pc parts now so I can change some components.
@@EposVox important question. Does obs beta allow to stream with av1 gpu encoding on Twitch right now?
@@outlawkings6133 Twitch doesn't currently support AV1, no. You can use it for RUclips!
How the hell did melee that guy from 30 feet away
Hmm, you probably want the RED Raptor X
Nah
I appreciate the humor that you think I have $30k tho
Angelbird 1tb cf express is $200
I need you to upgrade so I can afford a used R5c.
Canon 700D/Rebel T5i and later the 6D mark 2.. Ohh boy that 6D mark 2... I still miss it sometimes.
There is no such thing as the perfect cameral :) the closest to day would be the Fuji GFX100 mark 2 or for normal humans the panasonic lumix s5S2x
I own two Canon C70 with speedboosters making them EF mount.-.. damn it CANON!!! EF mount...
and I own a R5C with the ND filter adapter.. then again EF mount (Canon why do you keep doing this to us) I got an R3 for sport clients fotos and some video, because the C70 is shit with auto focus for video and because the R5C only keeps battery for an hour with the battery grib.
Come to think about it..
there is no such thing as a real cinema camera with RF mount, a full frame sensor with build in NDs to fit that RF 24-105 f2.8 lens :P
Canon what the hell are you doing.. wake up pls. - That sony or Nikon system begins to look nicer and nicer each day :P
I don’t think Nikon has a mount with built in NDs lol
Pretty sure a couple REDs run RF mount now
Not long ago Nikon didnt have a Cinema camera at all ;) hahahah 😂
>to film
>digital camera
🤔🤔🤔
Ah yes, I too like to ignore the contemporary definitions of verbs to leave silly RUclips comments. :P
Dial a number. On your touchscreen smartphone...
But I seriously thought we're at least a decade past such comments, but I guess some people are just stuck indefinitely.
> 2 year old camera
are you implying it can't walk and speak or that it need to be at retirement home?
My camera does not walk or speak, can confirm.
