Jan I believe Canon owes you a debt of gratitude. Yours is the best r5 mkii setup vid I’ve seen. In fact with only a slight variance here and there I used your settings.
You do not use Canon DPP4. I do. In post I click on Digital Lens Optimizer, Auto Light Optimizer, and I bump clarity. Setting these in camera saves me steps in post. I also use fine picture style even though I shoot in raw. For wildlife better details as a starting point. Saves me click time. Those settings are not just for jpegs.
I wish you’d do more in the video setup. I think most R5 users are pic shooters. But now with all these pro enhancements, those shooters will pay more attention to video. And we’re not as versed in terms like codex, lutz, color grading video.
I use Davinci Reolve. So I’m busy searching for “how tos” in doing these things. Things like downloading color profiles would be of interest. And of particular interest would be working from CLOG2.
I believe this could be a good subject for you with your teaching style and skills.
Please mention using the quick or slow autofocusing transition in video.
    Anyway take care.

@@jan_wegener went out and tested it with impressive results. I forgot to change the filename settings, lol! Do you know why Canon insists on replacing the first character of the filename with and underscore (_) when using Adobe RGB? This happens even when I only saves RAW to the CFexpress card.

As always, your in depth dive into settings is the best resource available. I'm giving many of your settings a try. I especially like your set up for Eye control. One thing you didn't mention is the 'AE for Priority Subjects During AF' on the red 2 menu. If I understand it correctly, we finally have metering on the AF point which makes Auto ISO a more practical option than ever before. In my testing over the past few days I'm finding it pretty well. Thanks for the great content. I purchased your set up guide.

Another excellent video Jan! Thank you very much for taking the time not only to decipher and test these settings, but also to present them in such a clear manner.
A note of warning to those who wish to take 8k video: If you set the movie record options to "Auto switch card" in the first yellow menu, as Jan does at 16:56, 8k recording will no longer be an option in the first red menu (not even grayed out). That is simply because you can only record 8k video to the CFexpress card. Jan mentions that some settings have repercussions by affecting the availability of others, but this wasn't explicitly called out and it took me a while to figure out what was going on.
Bottom line, if you want to be able to select 8k video recording size, leave the movie record options set to "Standard" or "1 Main 2 Proxy."

Excellent video, thank you! Get the R5 II last week and found setting it up even more complex than the R5. So many options, and some very weird Canon defaults. I used the info in your first video (amazing pictures BTW!) and spent two long days shooting with it. Your first R5 II video really helped, but I could tell there were settings I needed to change. This new video helped me understand and refine a number of settings.
What I'd like now is a video dedicated to eye control. I wear glasses, and so far eye control for me seems too crude in selecting a subject. However, I'm not sure what to expect from it and how it looks when it is working well for someone. Having more details on setting it up, what it can and can't do, how to override it when it doesn't work, and potential pitfalls would be a huge helpful!

    Hi Jan,
I think I've worked out how to assign precapture on/off to a single button press: customise the M-Fn button to C: Switch to Custom shooting mode, (this allows you to toggle between C1, C2, & C3) , then set up your favourite settings to both C1 & C2 with the only difference being C1 has precapture turned off and C2 has it turned on. Finally Untick C3 so that the M-Fn button only toggles between C1 and C2. (I had a 1DX mark ii before and used this idea to toggle between single shot and H+ shooting)
    Cheers
    Noel

  • @disphoto
    @disphoto 3 месяца назад +4

Thanks. A couple of things you didn't cover could be important.
    1) If you set up for "Backout Free Display," then (unlike any other Canon camera I have used) the aperture on the lens will stop down according to the aperture. This makes tweaking manual focus much less effective to impossible if the aperture is set to a high number. Also new (to me) is that you can set the view to be either with or without DOF/aperture stopped down with the other shutter modes (but it always stops down with Blackout Free, and the options are grayed out).
    2) You didn't go into the new "submenus" enabled by the INFO button when you set up back button AF. Syler P.R. goes into them a bit in "Supercharge your Canon R5 II for Wildlife Photo & Video (Complete Setup Guide)." There are vastly more options than on the R5. It also means that with BBF, what AF focusing mode you pick with the RED menu seems meaningless. As you set up with the Mf button (to pick the focus mode) and the Orange menu to limit focusing modes).
A whole video just on the R5m2's focusing modes with their many sub-menus with BBF is warranted.

Yeah, I think I noticed the thing about blackout free/stopping down too.... I will have to experiment with that now.... Depending on the "blackout", I may leave it off even.

Bomber Jan (and Glenn). Many thanks!!! The video, the setup pdf and the .CSD file were all extremely helpful. Canon must update the firmware to provide us a way to limit the bird eye tracking to an area smaller than the entire screen...the inability to do this makes it unnecessarily difficult to shoot small birds in foliage and, frankly, has caused me to be somewhat disappointed in the R5m2.

Thanks Jan. The settings file was great and an excellent buy for $20 - I recommend it to everyone. That being said, you still need to watch the video and go through the PDF so you understand how the camera has been set up to use it properly.
There is something else I would happily pay another $20 for. I don't know if you are going to get rid of all your R5M1s and go pure R5M2 but many of us are now going to be shooting both bodies. Although I was happy with the way my R5M1 was set up (with the help of your excellent R5M1 video), I would now like it to match my R5M2 (as closely as possible). I would particularly like the back button focusing to be as close as possible so using the two cameras at the same time can be as intuitive as possible. Perhaps you could post your R5M1 settings, preferably modified to match the R5M2 handling settings as far as possible?
Perhaps a video in the future advising owners of both bodies how people carrying both bodies and a couple of lenses could best use the combination. Seems to me that maybe the R5M1 could have a wide angle lens where the autofocus isn't as critical with the R5M2 carrying a long telephoto? I'm sure you have much better ideas.

Just watched your video, and funny enough we configured our cameras pretty much the same. Only difference is I use triple back button focus in C1 and have a dedicated eye control profile on C2.
My C1 has spot with tracking, spot without tracking, and eye tracking on the 3 back buttons.
My C2 has one back button to toggle the AF focus point mode (spot, expadned, zone, etc), 2nd button to enable/disable whole screen tracking, 3rd button to enable/disable one shot/servo and the shutter button has once again gotten the ability to focus and meter/shoot and move the eye control AF point around.
I feel splitting into two profiles lets me better use the eye control rather than trying to "fit it in" with my normal back button focus setup, I especially like having spot with and without tracking one button press away along with eye as my events I shoot are real time I cant miss a shot.
The eye control however fixes the issue where I need to move focus for the compesition or for creative shots.
I'll have to try your setup though since I am so used to back button focus and not metering with the shutter button that now when I try, I find myself accidentally taking pictures when I am just trying to focus/meter on my C2 profile as that shutter button is extremly sensitive and a light press.

My biggest peeves about R5 Mark II) so far: 1 no longer able to switch between video and photos with right hand - used to be programmable on the R5, now they put a unnecessary switch on the left side of the Mark II; 2( More noise and less DR at equal ISO, compared to R5; 3) Lack of "MOVEMENT AF" - want to be able to focus on movement in the frame, such as an active warbler; 4) lack of "FOCUST ON NEAREST"AF - for birds in flight against a tough background, would love to be able to focus on the nearest object, i.e. the bird; 5) need more customizable buttons; My biggest likes compared to R5: 1) Pre-shooting, which opens a brand new area of bird photography; 2) Improved AF capture and track; 3) higher frame rate; 4) insignificant rolling shutter.

Would it not possibly be better to have it on the Standard level to support low-light situations? Since I shoot wildlife with the RF 100-500, sometimes adding the RF 1.4x teleconverter, I can't go wider than f/7.1 at 500mm or f/10 at 700mm. Correct me if I'm wrong Jan, but the colour space setting also has no effect on RAW files, and only applies to JPEGs. Raw files save in as brightness depth per RGB colour filtered pixel to give 14 bit colour rendition and the colour space is imposed when they're processed with a de-mosaicing algorithm in LrC or whatever else you use. So, the colour space menu item is another one you can ignore unless shooting jpeg.

39:01 The ‘movie servo af’ has a submenu where you can select ‘detect only’ which prevents the AF from wandering of to the background when the subject exits the frame. Useful for subjects that return frequently, like kingfishers or dragonflies.

Hi Jan, you make great videos! I just received my R5ii and wanted to use your setup as a base.
Long story short, when I wanted to buy your guide and setup file, I can only pay with PayPal. This is not possible because my PayPal account is linked to an old mobile number.
    Please enable standard credit cards!

I recommend setting your video C3 custome functions to 4k UHD 60fps.120th sec shutter.
Most desktop monitors and most phones amd tablets use 60fps screed refresh as a default. Your 60fps video will look the nicest by far on a 60fps display device. Motion and panning will be the smoothest without the noticeable judder that occurs when shooting @ 25fps of 50fps, then displaying on a 60fps display device.
Even 30fps video video looks way smoother than 25 or 50fps when displayed on a 60fps monitor. 60fps should be your default.

Hi Jan, thanks a lot for providing this detailed guidance👍 Shall be the first video I return to once I found a way to afford upgrading to the R5ii. But actually, it triggered me to finally start using the MyMenu on my current R5 ;-)
For stills you didn't seem to set AF subject to animals (was greyed out due to selecting spot AF without tracking), but I'm guessing you temporary set here an AF method with tracking in order to select Animals, which you're using later via the AF-On button, right ?
I'm really wondering whether you're able to "abuse" registering persons for people priority by registering here bird species instead of regular persons. That might help to pick a rare bird from a flock of many birds ..
Is the red button to switch to Movie-C3 the only remaining option to switch between stills and movie (for which you don't have to force your left hand to drop the long glass 🙈) ?? Is it still possible to hit info after hitting the mode button ?
You added 'drive mode' in your MyMenu, which seems not possible on the old R5. Does the R5ii have a way to emulate the a9iii and assign a boost function to a button which would switch from H to H+ while holding such button ?

This was great! Thank you for explaining the difference between spot focus and spot focus with the lock. I was using spot focus and wondered why there was a moving blue box. What I don't understand is why. The spot focus point doesnt't automatically move to get on the subject. I know that if I press the joy stick straight in, that spot focus will re-center. What am I supposed to do to get that spot focus to go to the moving blue box? I am using dual back button focus with one button assigned for spot focus, not locked, and the other button for animal eye AF.
I followed along with your video set up as well. I used all your settings, then registered that to C3. So, when I'm in camera stills mode and press the red record button, the camera will record in those settings, correct? What about slow motion? If I go back to movie mode, what are the settings? I'd like to try this. Could I then register those settings to C2 to use when the camera is in stills mode? Or, do I just flip the switch to movie mode and leave the settings as I set them? I'm a complete novice when it comes to video. I just occasionally shoot some bird clips.
Thank you so very much for this tutorial. I am really happy that I upgraded from the R5. I really appreciate the time you take to educate us. I'm looking forward to all of your beautiful photos and videos to come.

Hi Cathy, as far as I understand, the red button switches just as hardcoded to Movie-C3 as the original R5 does. So I decided to configure my C3 for slow motion, assuming I'd need slomo more urgently in case some cool action happens. For regular video I take a bit more time to activate that C1/C2 mode.
The red button also starts recording asap, so as Jan explained it's good practice to first visit movie-C3 to set the exposure for the conditions on the day, before flipping to stills mode.
However, a few times I started (by accident) filming completely underexposed at ISO100, and while filming I cranked up the ISO which had as a nice effect as if someone smoothly switched on the sun ;-)

Iv got my hands on a R5 mark 2 for a couple of days and tested the camera for some action birdphotography. I also use 2 button back-button focus. But i find its hard to pick a bird in a flock of bird. Even in manual AF mode with -2 and -1 to make it stick to the bird. My R3 dont have a problem with this. I can initiate a individual and stick the eye-focus to this individual and it stay on it. I cant find a place in the meny to initiate where the focus starts from...

I hate that the Nikon cameras with custom shooting banks don't allow you to not auto update the current bank, to have it fixed. Every other camera I used (Sony, Olympus, Panasonic) allow you to decide, just like Canon, if you want them fixed, or to always update.
And I love to have the exact same settings every time I turn the camera on, so I can adjust w/o having to check what's on the camera. I usually try to set my camera to the same settings before turning it off, but sometimes I forgot and I found myself missing shots when I turned it on to quickly shoot something and had the wrong settings. It's probably my biggest gripe with the Z8 and something I still can't get used to/accept, even after using it for a year... it just seems insane that such a simple thing isn't left to the user to decide... it would just be one extra toggle somewhere in a menu.

Hello! Please tell me, is it normal that in the viewfinder of this camera there is always a flickering on small objects located at a distance (for example, on power lines, on individual branches, on brickwork)? On the Canon R3 camera I did not notice such flickering.

What I did for quck pre-shot selection is saved my normal bird settings WITH preshot to C2. So all you need to get to pre shoot is to go to C2 and shoot.

  • @MichaelFogleman

I tried "Blackout free display" but then was wondering why the camera showed me that FPS logo every time it woke up. I guess that also enables high framerate on the viewfinder. So I turned Blackout free display back off and found the shooting to still be buttery smooth and easy to track fast moving birds. I don't think it makes much difference and leaving it off frees you from those various limitations.

Hi Jan, great video, thank you. I'm still confused by one thing. With this set-up, when you press the Eye Tracking Autofocusing button (AF ON button), how does the camera know that you specifically want to track animals (birds), instead of people?

  • @williamchen8009
    @williamchen8009 2 месяца назад

I find that you can actually use the eye control autofocus button for both eye control AF and normal spot AF. If the eye control is off, the eye control AF button simply performs as normal spot AF.

Really enjoyed this breakdown, it's super helpful. One question on your Locked Spot Focus setup. You don't have yours set to move the focus point back to camera center, do you? On my R6 I typically had one Back Button set for AF Eye Tracking and then another setup for Spot Focus at the center point. It forces me to re-compose the shot, which I don't love but sometimes I feel like it can be quicker when I'm in a situation where the focus point is off in a corner and not catching on what I want it to. Just curious about your take on this.

I have purchased your excellent R5 Mark II setup guide and installed the .CSD file in the camera.
Since “Spot AF locked” is chosen as the AF area, the”Subject to detect” is grayed out.
When you press the AF button to BBF for Eye autofocus with tracking, how does the camera know whether to look for a bird? Does it automatically look for a bird or look through all possibilities?
I normally put “Subject to detect” in My Menu, but it comes up, grayed out with subject “none”.
    Am I missing something?
    Thank you.
