By a mile the best review on this new camera to date. Super methodical, professional, thorough and honest. Well done! and well done to Canon for this fantastic camera release. I am definitely getting the r5m2.
I'm so happy for you that you got your target bird, the Palm Cockatoo. Both the recording and photos are INCREDIBLE! This presentation has convinced me that I made the right choice purchasing the R5 II. Thanks again, Jan!
oooooh you got one in hand!!!! Congrats Jan, can't wait to sit down and thoroughly enjoy this video. Very difficult to find *quality content on this new release, and makes my day knowing I've got a 30min overview to truly enjoy/learn some objective points and real-world performance. perhaps speaking on behalf of many, but your efforts on this channel are greatly appreciated and means a lot to many of us! 👏👏👏
Photons to photos measured the R5 2 as a third of the stop lower dynamic range and 0.2 DN higher read noise (0.9 for electronic shutter at higher bit depth) than the R5 1, as a trade-off for the sensor speed. This isn't much but your report tells us the difference is noticeable. Hopefully a pure raw profile will come soon and render the point moot. I haven't found any autofocus yet that's amazingly reliable for black eyes on a black animal, but your examples look pretty good and your comments on the IBIS make good listening. Thanks for the good info Jan.
I have been checking your RUclips channel daily waiting for this review. Your review is thorough and clear. But what blew me out of the water were your incredible images of the riflebird and palm cockatoo! Just when I think you can't get any better, you do! Thanks Jan- you are the best!
Thank you so much for getting this video out there. It must have been a challenge to get done on top of your trip. I’m so happy that the rolling shutter has been controlled to a sufficient degree and that we finally have functional precapture. Canon did a good job so now the ball is in out court to get out there and get some killer shots. I can’t wait! Hopefully, my copy will arrive on Wednesday. Again, great review and thanks for the heroic effort!!
I've enjoyed my R7 for a few years now but this camera (Canon R5ii) is the next one I'll have on my list to purchase. In my retirement photography has become a wonderful commitment. Thanx Jan for more beautiful and informative media.
Jan, your review is the only one I need. You are the best! I'm very excited to get mine and since B&H billed my credit card today the 19th, that may mean it's shipping tomorrow. Thanks again for all the effort you put in to not only giving detailed information about the camera, but the effort to capture the amazing birds you do.
@@jan_wegener Thank you for taking your time with this review! A rushed review isn't nearly as valuable as this! :) Just one question though. Would you be able to ask your contacts at Canon about 4K Fine being limited to only 30fps? I'm hoping for a firmware update bringing 8K oversampled 4K60p to the R5 Mark II so do you know or could you please ask Canon if they're working on such a firmware update? It feels like Canon wants to artificially limit the R5 Mark II to protect their R5C which is really disappointing. The R5 Mark II should be able to record 8K oversampled 4K60p (4K Fine)! Thank you very much in advance! :)
Congrats to all the new R5ii purchasers. Looks a like a homerun. I’m fully invested in Nikon with the Z8 which more than does the job for me. No longer have fomo or see features that wow me from other brands. Some nice to haves for sure.
No, besides AF in very fast situations and series - the Nikon Z8, Z9 are by far better, faster Kameras with a lot more affordable lenses. Only 95 RAWs until buffer is clearing is not really professionally fast in the R5II.

Thanks Jan. Like others, I've been checking your channel daily, waiting for your review. I'm mainly a sports (car and sailboat racing) and doco/event photographer and videographer, but still find your reviews to be some of the best around. Many of your needs also translate to mine. You've confirmed that I made the right decision to preorder to upgrade my main camera from an R5 to the Mk ii. Hopefully it'll ship soon! Will be keeping the R5 as a second body though... still love it. Your videos and images from the trip are amazing, particularly those of the Palm Cockatoos!
One of the points you brought up that I do not like about the R5 Mark II and agree with you. It is the photo video button that everybody is raving about. Now I have the R5 and the R6 Mark II. When I shoot the R6 Mark II in order to go to video mode like you stated you got to take your hand off the lens and when I'm shooting something like the 500 mm the lens drops significantly and then I lose my target acquisition. Which also takes precious time up. When in fact the original R5 allowed me to set a multi-function button to go to 24 fps, and then the red button was my b-roll 120 frames a second.. with the R6 Mark II, I can still set the red button, but I can not set it up the same way. Because now you can't do your b roll the same way. It's not interchangeable, like with the R5, where I can make the multifunction either the 24 or the 120 and vice versa..
Excellent review Jan! Really insightful and you covered the performance of all the key features that I think most bird and wildlife shooters have been curious to hear about. I'm a little disappointed that all the amazing AF improvements made for tracking humans and sports haven't really translated to birds. Hopefully the AF will get even better with future firmware updates. Regarding dynamic range, PhotonsToPhotos did quite a robust and comprehensive test and there appears to be neglible difference between the Mk ii and Mk i. Stunning photos and footage as always Jan! I'm so happy that your trip was so fruitful and gave you many wonderful lifetime memories with the beautiful rifle birds and palm cockatoos. Thanks for all your hard work in putting this video together and sharing your valuable thoughts. 🙏 Looking forward to picking up my own R5 Mk ii tomorrow!
This review of the canon R 5 II was perfect with no flaw. I watched it two times because of the wonderful combination with pictures of those amazing Rifle Birds and the intelligent palm cockatoo. It doesnt get better than this !
I preordered r5m2 with pickup date 20th of august. But 3 days ago it was changed to 4th of October. I don’t know what to do now. Should I cancel my preorder in Fnac Paris.
I can’t remember ever watching a product review that made me go “Wow!” But this was one, with your incredible footage and stills of the rare birds. Wonderful! And as a bonus (!) it was a very comprehensive and meaningful review under tough real-world conditions. Thank you! 🙏
It’s interesting to see what you call one your best experiences with the palm cockatoo! I find all your footage simply amazing. What is common to you is still rare for some of us! To see these magnificent birds in the wild is such a gift to me. I’ll never make it to Australia, so you taking us along on your adventures is priceless to me! In the USA, OH we would only see some of these birds in a pet store, which has always made me quite sad. If you love birds, then leave them in nature! Thanks Jan!
Another incredible video Jan! I have decided to purchase the Canon R3, thank you for your help! Birds might be the best judge of human character, thus the reason the Cassowary walked up so close to you. My Macaws have taught me that birds can always tell when humans can be trusted with their safety!
Fabulous review! Everything I wanted to know except how to set it up (and I know that's coming!) Mine is in the air right now and set to arrive on the 21st. Thanks for being so complete in your hands on review. Catherine D.
Great review. Getting my r5MII tomorrow which is exciting! I shoot a mixture of genres from landscapes to sports and wildlife so having a camera that is an improvements for the latter subjects and just as good as before for landscapes, is great news. Once the noise software industry catches up etc, I think any concerns around dynamic range will quickly evaporate.
Fantastic, thorough video, reviewing all the important details I was looking for. Thanks so much, good luck in the growth of your channel, hopefully 100k subs not too far away!
Hi Jan as a non Canon user I still found this super interesting and a concise review. As a Bird Photographer I so enjoy your Bird Images and the actual story of how you get the images. For my images I like to show the Birds doing stuff, the interaction, displaying of the subjects, you capture, is why I am so dedicated to watching your channel. Great detail on all accounts as ever and it really looks like all the effort you put in, paid off Image wise. Many Regards from the UK.
The palm cockatoo drumming footage is next level. How do you capture the sound so good? Never even heard of most of the birds you captured. Would definitely want to know how you record sound in the field and even in studio. The sound quality is always amazing and is quite underrated in your videos.
It's great that people like you want to share an in field test with these new camera's. At the end that is were you buy a camera for, performing well in the outside world. Not studio work. Thanks.
Great review for us bird photography folks. However, I am most impressed by your ability to hike and handhold with the 600mm for hours at a time. Maybe you should do a workout video for bird photographers!
Strange how a single component can get you thinking about an upgrade. As an eyeglass wearer, I find the original viewfinder very hard to work with and even replaced the eyecup on my R5 with a less than perfect larger version. The new larger EVF and eyecup are very appealing, as are all of the other features you mention. Autofocus seems so much more sticky in your footage and that is also very appealing, as is the lack of overheating. Thank you for this thorough and real world review. And I must say the wildlife in Australia is amazing.
Excellent review. The majority of reviews on the R5 Mkii have been geared towards wedding and fashion photographers, so it's great to see one geared to wildlife shooters.
Excellent and useful review Jan. What magnificient footage and images you got out of that trip! The Magnificient rifle and the Pam Cokatoo are so awesome birds! Your daughter is so lovely too.... :) My r5m2 is on order.... not everything that I wanted but I needed a back-up camera for travel and this one with my R5 will be the perfect set.
This video is a BLAST! Easily the best wildlife video I've seen so far! The technical details of the new camera are overwhelmed by the beauty of the images ❤ incedible
Thanks Jan! Just got mine and it is everything I had hoped for especially with the autofocusing! 😊 Now if only I can get all these features in the R7 Mark II I’ll be a very happy camper! 😀 lol
Jan I'm not a cannon shooter, I've watched this twice now. Such a great review and in harsh conditions putting it through its paces. Anyone looking to get this camera definitely needs to see this review. Fantastic work, much respect 👍
Thanks for a fabulous and thorough review Jan, and your pics are incredible! Please let us have your settings ASAP so we can do a quick setup when our gear arrives! Thanks so much!
Hello from France!
Amazing video as usual. Surprisingly not only because of the review (I'm not getting R5 mkII any time soon anyway), but the stories of the photographs in the video are just amazing. I would love to see more videos focusing on your trips and birds you focus on.
Darn it Jan, I have an R5 and did not think it would be enough of an upgrade, but now you made me want one! Does sound great, we will see if I succumb...great review and photos as always!
Wonderful review that is easy to understand , no getting in the weeds with real technical talk. I will eventually purchase this camera, but I have the Canon R 1 on pre-order. Can't wait to see your review on that camera!
Thanks for the video. Very informative and great pics. I'll get the R5mII for Christmas as an addition to my R6mII. I basically only ever use two lenses, and not having to swap them anymore will be so awesome.
I've been using pre-capture turned on full time. If you don't hold the shutter half-pressed, you can still get a burst starting when you quickly press it - no need to get the pre-capture images if you don't need them
Really well done comprehensive review, as always. I am very glad to hear how well the camera performed for you in such challenging real world conditions. For myself though, since I am primarily a landscape shooter who more casually shoots wildlife, even though I was originally planning on upgrading, now that the camera is out and hearing about the reduction in dynamic range means I will likely stay with my trusty R5 for now.
I sent back the R6 MK2 because unlike my R5C I could not get spot AF without tracking even when I said "dont use tracking/eye focus" glad to see they addressed this specifically. I am a concert photographer, and the lighting is super dark and the bands often are in makup and costum so its extremly hard for eye focus and subject tracking. So yeah I will miss the DR and ISO performance a bit, but my shots are already way more noise free than most other people because I shoot with 1.2 glass for this reason. I am hoping to use the new EVF eye tracking along with spot to help me frame shots faster or choose the right subject in a group because it was slow and cumbersome to use the LCD to choose my focus point, and not nearly fast or accurate enough to use the joystick. For the ISO performance and Noise it seems that all stacked sensors are like this, so its equal to or better than other brands offerings, a trade off for the faster readout speed. What I hope, is that Canon maybe does something innovative and offers for the frist time a setting to change the read out speed and dynamic range/iso performance priority in settings. Technicaly the sensor can have better DR and NOise than the R5 with this sensor and keep the read out speed the same, OR it can have a faster readout with some losses. They are marketing this hard for the faster readout speeds, so I hope that doesn't stop them from still offering a "enhanced image" mode where the speed is not as important.
@@jacobgarvelink2441 Mostly because my R5MI is old. But also because I want to explore new features such as the pre-record and pre-shoot, better rolling shutter control, eye-track focusing, 16-bit electric shutter, no record limit, Canon log 2, 30 frames/sec, etc
Yan, your review is 10/10. It is a fantastic camera and a major upgrade over a great camera. I would like to see all the menus of the camera in an upcoming video. Beautiful pictures too Yan !
Thanks for this - this was more than a review - it was fun! I've been using your (fantastic) recommended settings for the R5 for several years, so I'm really looking forward to your video on settings for the m2.
That Palm Cockatoo dance made me dance too 😂 BEAUTIFUL images Jan. Thanks for the vid. I shoot sports so I go get mine tomorrow at the camera store. I have decided not to trade in my R6MkII tho I think I’ll hang onto it until after I get the R1
Thanks for the great video Jan. I got mine yesterday and hope to get out using it this weekend. Looking forward to your setup video. That Palm Cockatoo photo is killer!!!
Thanks, Jan! Great, thorough review. I count on your professionalism when reviewing cameras and lenses, so I know I can trust your opinion. Definitely thinking seriously about the R5MII. Maybe there will actually be one available at some future time.
Excellent review. You kinda shut up those youtubers who talk negatively about this camera while they don't even have the camera on hand to test in the field. The environment where you used the camera in is very challenging for any camera. My pre-order has been shipped. I can't wait to try it. Pre-shooting and minimal rolling shutter are worth the upgrade for me. Rifle bird and Palm Cockatoo pictures are outstanding and jaw-dropping. Perhaps you might want to lead a workshop to these locations so we all can enjoy looking at or photographing these magnificient birds.
That's a pretty awesome camera. One thing pre capture helps with is when trying to shoot lighting. I only really attempted it once cut i got a hit. Not a dynamics bolt but still makes me confident that it will happen.
Sounds like a great camera. Pre-capture in raw is the one thing which would make my Nikon Z9 perfect, so I'm hoping now that they've added it to the R5ii, we might get it in Nikonland.
Wonderful review... and stunning photos and videos of the rifle bird! I'm glad you were able to have your R2 early enough to give us a very thorough review before my R2 arrival on Wednesday. I'm also looking forward to your future content on the camera and video settings. My primary photography is seascapes and surrounding wildlife. I'm also just starting into video and have gained a lot from your content. Thank you again - best content ever!
Jan, you rocked it again! Although I am a Nikon Z8 shooter, the R5 II seems to be bloody good. Your review is great, your pics are - as always - amazing! Thanks, Jan!
I am getting the R5 II but I do a lot of landscape photography. Fortunately, I also do wildlife and birds and can benefit from most of the new features. I’ll definitely look forward to your video on setting the camera up.
A great video, thanks. My R5 MII ships this week and I am anxious to get it. To me, the preshooting capability will enable me to get shots I have always missed. Just yesterday, I was trying to get some butterfly take-off shots and was always late or gave up just before lift off. The larger viewfinder also should be helpful for older photographers like myself who have poor low-light vision due to cataracts:) I am pretty sure that the photo processors will over time improve their noise cancellation capabilities, but will continue to expose to the right to get the best images. The low light focusing improvements will also be welcome.
07:05 mins.: I have read that since the Southern Cassowary is a territorial bird you should not wear a blue t-shirt. So, black was a good choice, I think. 😉
I got mine yesterday and am very excited for the precapture as I primarily shoot fast moving wildlife. Thanks for thoroughly taking it through its paces.
Nice shots! Sometimes when I photograph dark birds - Blackbirds, Grackles, Cormorants, and the like - I shift the focus below the bird's body to the legs. The edge of the legs provides something for the autofocus to grab on to. Usually, the depth of field is sufficient to bring the entire bird into focus. It is nice that the R5 Mk II could focus directly on dark plumage. I think I will be upgrading from my R5 to the R5 II.
He Jan,I always see your great and honest videos. I am very excited to receive my R5 MII this week even more now i saw 👀 your great review ❤See you in the next video Jan….greetings from the netherlands 🇳🇱….and regards Ben Verdonk
For anyone wondering the best AF set up for R5’s; Reprogram your DOF preview button near the lens, to switch between tracking and static. The AF-ON on the back to eye-af and the standard half press will just be a static point (unless you have tracking turned on). It is a perfect, one handed usage so you can use tracking, eye af and normal af all with one hand.

Love your work, the rifle bird dance footage is absolutely stunning. Driving several hours deep into outback area and stay for a few days just to get a pic definitely show passion.
I’ve had R5M2 for a week and I shot birds with it and I came to similar conclusions. as you said ‘the autofocus is quite similar to R3 and R6M2” I have R8 which has the same AF as R6M2 and felt that AF for birds was pretty much similar, except perhaps R5M2 is a little snappier in very low light and also finds birds quickly against the sun. Thanks Jan for your hard work.
Jan, Your videos are always exceptional but this goes to number 11. Highly informative analysis of the pros and cons of the new R5ii and illustrated with absolutely spectacular still images and video of many really special birds. Thank you!

I've been waiting for your opinion of this camera. You and your buddy the guy who loves the 40D. I hold your opinions very high. Thank you very much for the great video
Hello Jan mein freund .. nur ab 7 sekunden ins video wueste ich bereits wie spaet es war 🙈 I had promised myself (and more importantly my wife) I'd stick to my R5 and resist the urge to upgrade so soon (having barely shot more than twice your harvest after a single trip 🙈). It smells like the R5ii basically combines the 45mp and body style of the R5 with all benefits of the R3 (as was proven after those 7s). Next year in February/March we'll make a birding trip to Costa Rica .. I guess the benefits of the R5ii will be clear over there. Also because for the first time shooting hummingbirds, on the R5 I'd need to stick to EFCS in which case the batteries are consumed 4 times as fast as in ES. Congrats on your perseverance for the Riflebirds and Palm Cockatoos, truly marvelous birds 👍👍 Momentan bin ich auf Dienstreise in Sindelfingen .. Donnerstag auf die reuckfahrt mache ich pause beim bienenfresser in Lambsheim ;-)

It's great that people like you want to share an in field test with these new camera's. At the end that is were you buy a camera for, performing well in the outside world. Not studio work. Thanks.
Outstanding information Jan. I receive my R5 my 2 tomorrow can’t wait to watch your setup video as I very much enjoy your videos. Take care
Finally got to watch your Review. I guess if you don't need the lastest tech buying a used R5 in a couple of months will be value to the max.
Great review for us bird photography folks. However, I am most impressed by your ability to hike and handhold with the 600mm for hours at a time. Maybe you should do a workout video for bird photographers!
It’s a struggle!
superb review, and crazy images. Your work never stops to amaze me!!!! bravo
Finally in the field video, I’ve been waiting for it 😊
Jan my friend! This is the best review of r5m2. Well done! Perfect one!
Glad you liked it!
The best no nonsense gear reviewer on the tube. Cheers
Thanks 😀
Incredible review and wildlife travel video in one, thanks!
Can't believe anyone would give this a 👎
yeah, there are plenty of canon haters out there. As far as some are concerned, this camera is an utter disappointment ! Wonderful review from Jan.
An excellent review that is very informative for other wildlife photographers. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent review. The majority of reviews on the R5 Mkii have been geared towards wedding and fashion photographers, so it's great to see one geared to wildlife shooters.
Glad you enjoyed it
Mine shipped today, and I'm so happy!! Thanks for the review Jan!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Jan! Just got mine and it is everything I had hoped for especially with the autofocusing! 😊 Now if only I can get all these features in the R7 Mark II I’ll be a very happy camper! 😀 lol
Makes me want to visit Australia!
Jan I'm not a cannon shooter, I've watched this twice now. Such a great review and in harsh conditions putting it through its paces. Anyone looking to get this camera definitely needs to see this review. Fantastic work, much respect 👍
Glad you liked it so much!
Wow, those Palm Cockatoos! Amazing images Jan
All week I'm waiting for your review ,very great thank you.
Hope you enjoy it!
@@jan_wegener Very wonderful.
Darn it Jan, I have an R5 and did not think it would be enough of an upgrade, but now you made me want one! Does sound great, we will see if I succumb...great review and photos as always!
Wow !! I entered to hear about the R5II but the photos were absolutely amazing 🤩 Thank you! What a great shooting trip.
Love the confidence when you say you’ve used them all!
Hehe 😆
I've been using pre-capture turned on full time. If you don't hold the shutter half-pressed, you can still get a burst starting when you quickly press it - no need to get the pre-capture images if you don't need them
All pics are awesome 😮😮❤❤❤
Amazing photos and video! I really value your assessment of the camera. You certainly put it through its paces. Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Really well done comprehensive review, as always.
This is what we need actual in the field testing by pros that actually know how to maximize the features in the camera. Great job Jan.
Great review as always, Jan! I look forward to getting the MARK II. I have the MARK I and it is a great camera.
curious to know what makes you want to upgrade!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hardly back from a looong tour you're already presenting this excellent video. Your mastery is amaziing. Your bird pictures are aaaaaaaawesome!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your video.
I ordered an R5II on the first day. It will be delivered tomorrow. I am very pleased.
Many greetings from Germany.
Good choice!
As usual a very comrehensive overview of this Camera. My decision to get the MII has been made much easier.Thanks.
Thanks. I’ll hopefully have it out by then
Best R5ii real life review to date. Great job Jan, like always.
Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. We will see what we can do 😀
Great video. You had to have fun on this trip. I will be getting mine tomorrow also. Thanks again for such a timely review.
That's a pretty awesome camera. One thing pre capture helps with is when trying to shoot lighting.
I only really attempted it once cut i got a hit. Not a dynamics bolt but still makes me confident that it will happen.
8:18 "so when I see a bird that's about to take off(POOP)"
Great to hear!
Jan, you rocked it again! Although I am a Nikon Z8 shooter, the R5 II seems to be bloody good. Your review is great, your pics are - as always - amazing! Thanks, Jan!
Thank you!
Dayummmmm. That was quick mate! Good effort!
Good review from someone using it in the field.
He Jan,I always see your great and honest videos. I am very excited to receive my R5 MII this week even more now i saw 👀 your great review ❤See you in the next video Jan….greetings from the netherlands 🇳🇱….and regards Ben Verdonk
For anyone wondering the best AF set up for R5’s;
Reprogram your DOF preview button near the lens, to switch between tracking and static. The AF-ON on the back to eye-af and the standard half press will just be a static point (unless you have tracking turned on).
It is a perfect, one handed usage so you can use tracking, eye af and normal af all with one hand.
The review I was waiting for. Thanks Jan!
Tried to make it as quickly as possible 😅
@@jan_wegener Hey, Jan :) did you talk to your contacts at Canon about 4K Fine being limited to only 30fps? I'm hoping for a firmware update bringing 8K oversampled 4K60p to the R5 Mark II so do you know or could you please ask Canon if they're working on such a firmware update?
It feels like Canon wants to artificially limit the R5 Mark II to protect their R5C which is really disappointing. The R5 Mark II should be able to record 8K oversampled 4K60p (4K Fine)!
@@jan_wegenerReally appreciate it.
Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
This video has got to contain be the best video footage of any camera review ever! I wish I could have been there with you guys. Are you doing tours yet, Jan?
Maybe one day hehe
Congrats on your perseverance for the Riflebirds and Palm Cockatoos, truly marvelous birds 👍👍
Momentan bin ich auf Dienstreise in Sindelfingen .. Donnerstag auf die reuckfahrt mache ich pause beim bienenfresser in Lambsheim ;-)
Nice analysis. My R5M2 shipped today. If I can do better with it than my R7, which has some shortcomings, I'll be very happy.
Thanks for your timely use and comments video!! You’re the Best!!!
You are so welcome!
Witnessing and capturing video of a Palm Cockatoo in the wild drumming is very special. Well Done Jan.
Thanks 😀
