There are a lot of small improvements, like better focusing, faster FPS, a much brighter viewfinder display, etc. I don't know why people expect a major upgrade to an already very capable camera. And the company's resources are limited when compared to those of Sony. If all the main cameras and lenses were interchangeable, people could mix and match gear that best works for them. Instead, people need to marry, and possibly divorce, a camera + lenses maker.

I don’t understand why so many users have difficulty removing the hot shoe cover. Just use your index finger nail to pull back the button and the cover slides right off!
I'm not really impressed with the R5 M2. I have an R6 Mark 2 and I have another 10fps in electronic shutter mode for some reason. C-Log 2 doesn't seem to be a good enough reason to upgrade. I'm not sure what was meant when the guy said that DNR is "baked in" to the RAW files. So, even if you shut the in camera DNR off, you still get DNR no matter what? Also, for the battery grip that has the fan, does the grip deplete the batter power faster? That would have been a great thing to mention. There are some nice things about the camera that weren't mentioned such as a full HDMI out port. Having a mini HDMI port on my R6 M2, a full size would be very welcomed. Anyway, this was an ok review video but I'm really sick of review videos that test the camera with 3 of the most boring styles of photography, wedding/wildlife/landscape. Something that tests the camera but also goes outside of the box would be nice.
Mike's R5 + Sigma 150-600mm deserve an award for enduring the worst of times and circumstances. I just cannot believe that any R5 would ever look like this in just under 4 years! Great guy!
I'm taking my R5 II for its first shoot tomorrow. That hot shoe cover really is a PITA. It requires two hands: one fingertip to depress the button and the other full hand to push it off. And that's with no lens attached. Sheesh. I won't be using that hot shoe too often, I don't think.
Why doesn't Petapixel employ Mike Drew to destroy, I mean, test the durability of the new cameras that come in? Rather than "a decade of testing", perhaps 1-week of (Mike's) standard usage would suffice?
You guys should go on tour! I plan to pick up my own R5 Mk II within the next couple of weeks, and I am REALLY looking forward to checking it out with the 100-500, 200-800, and my beloved 24-105 EF, via the EF > RF adapter.
For video, it is not up to the mark compared to the Nikon Z8 -- especially for longer 8K 60p video recording. But for flip screen and lower weight, the Canon R5 Mark II can also be used as a Vlog camera. The Nikon Z8 is unable to do that.
I’m not exactly sure what reviewers are on about with this hot shoe. I’ve had my r5ii for about a week now and it took me about 5 seconds the first time I tried to figure out how to do it. Now it takes me less than a second each time. You just gotta push the button with your thumb and pull the cover backwards with your pinky or ring finger towards you.
To be honest, that sounds like an exercise in frustration. Then again, I never kept hot shoe covers on any of my cameras, so I'm not one to complain about such things :D
@@yawningmarmot I get you. But it really isn't hard to do once you figure out how you're supposed to do it. You don't even need a ton of force, just the right movement
I've been so used to using the fuji xt5, I need some practice to hold the r5mii + 70-200 steady! The autofocus is so good it's worth it but so hefty lol. For the eye control I was able to calibrate by holding the camera a little bit away from my eye rather than mashing my eye into the finder.
What brand of CFexpress card did you use in the canon R5 mark ii? I heard that the CFexpress is also one of the leading cause of overheat the camera. It seems like your overheating test results are better than mine. I got only 55 minutes in 4K fine 24 fps whereas you got 74 minutes.
Wonder if the hot shoe cover from the R7 or R3 would fit? The R7 one works fine. I put a piece of gaffer tape over it so it doesn’t accidentally slide out (after one fell off somewhere in the field). Lifting a piece of gaffer tape is easier than trying to hold a button down while sliding it off.
Fun video. Thank you. I was curious about image stabilisation for handheld video work. Did you test that? When I played with it at B&H, it seemed pretty good, especially with a stabilised lens.
Great video guys, as always! Loved the outdoor scenes. You mentioned 4K 60 being line-skipped. Try SRAW. Seems to have a lot more detail. Maybe even over-sampled?
@@thatjordandrake Thanks Jordan, I appreciate the reply. I tested 4K SRAW against 4K Line-Skipped and 4K Fine. I’m not sure what’s going on in terms of technology, but SRAW looked nearly identical to 4K Fine. Definitely more detail than Line-Skipped. And it was true at both 29.97 and 59.94. I’d encourage you to take a second look. It surprised me. Considering everyone’s disappointment in the lack of a 4K 60 oversampled, full-frame mode, this may be a great solution.
Now I don't feel quite so bad about how "used" my camera gear looks, although I ended up glueing my 200-600 together after I took a fall with it. No one is going to be able to work on that lens again :). Love the FJ and really hope my vehicle will still be running after 800000 plus km. First review I have seen of a production R5 II and it is good to see everything that I wanted out of it seems to be working well. Still going to wait a few months to see if there are issues that come up around the camera crashing like my R5 did so often. If I don't hear any complaints then my savings may go down and I will finally be able to use my Canon lenses again :)
Super recording and material! Thank you for the story about Canon and the review of the R5 Mark II. The R5 Mark II is already on its way to me. I am mainly afraid of the ventilation holes when taking pictures in the forest, on meadows, on the beach, etc. (small bugs, midges, sand, dust and other dirt). What can you say about it? What is your opinion? Nikon Z9/Z8 and Sony A1/A7xxx / A9xxx do not have such holes.
Nice to see you using the Canon RF 800 mm F11 lens on the new Canon R5 Mark II. Just had this lens out yesterday on my R6 Mark II for some wild fowl photography. Also you used the RF 24-105 mm F4 lens - which is an affordable lens. Don't feel too cheap using these RF lenses compared with some of those very expensive RF lenses.
Not wanting to pick nits but for heat tests it would be nice if you listed the card/cards used. Also did the camera hit it's thermal limits or was it the card? For those who don't know some older cards generate more heat than a blast furnace. OTOH modern current gen CFe cards should run much cooler.
I have no interest in this camera or any canon camera but I will watch any review from the Chris and Jordan (and guests), canon or otherwise. Love learning about different camera brand features and developments from you guys
Great review! I'd love to see something more comprehensive, but I like this format. Maybe do this again with a sports photographer, portrait photographer, street... I'm considering my 1st mirrorless cam, and the R5 ii will likely be it. My only hang up is the limited display/monitor. Making it free tilting seems like low hanging fruit. So I'm somewhat considering waiting to see what Sony does in the next few months. A Sony A7R vi with a stacked sensor and improved video capabilities would be a strong consideration.
I have the camera now and getting the hotshoe cover off is no exaggeration! I predict that the plastic pin that is holding it will break off pretty soon if you take it on and off a lot. BTW, on a different note, when the video switched to Jordan the graded C-log2 footage looked great! 👍🏻
This camera is obviously better in most ways than the R5, but the dodgy hot shoe cover and the omission of oversampled 4k60 are odd fails. When you consider that used R5s are selling for practically half the price of this camera and still beat it in some respects, it's not the most compelling upgrade, at least until used ones come on the market in a year or three.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to this camera, but somebody posted a video showing that if you squeeze the sides of the cover and press the button, the cover comes off. I've also seen comments about R6 that it was only difficult to remove the cover a few times in the beginning.
It may be that the image processor overheated quickly in the 8k/60 mode or it could not handle it and a new generation is needed. Or maybe an updated C version is coming with this video mode. Unfortunately, companies are very "non-transparent" about their decisions.
The r5 mark i has had those same recording timelimits ever since they added the high temp setting. Why no comparison to that?? Whats the point of comparing to the original firmware which no one uses?
Just bought one for £4,005 on Panamoz, with Battery grip, extra Canon battery, CFExpress-B card 128gb, and a control ring adapter! Not sure when it'll be here but it may take nearly 2 weeks. I was stuck between the R5 Mark II and the R1. Don't get me wrong, the R1 seems to be a great camera, where its 24mp sensors has its strength especially in low light. However, I do wildlife photography and landscapes are something I also want to do, and having smaller 'pixels' on sensor apparently helps with dynamic range at the lower ISOs. It also cost a bit less. The R5 Mark II has slightly more appealing video capability too, which makes sense due to its higher MP sensor.
Awesome video. I picked up an R5 Mark II for my photography and RUclips work. Love the camera but to be honest the money it cost plus the additional batteries I’ll have to buy puts this camera in the not worth the upgrade column. It’s not a significant upgrade for a portrait and event shooter like me.
Great (and funny) video. I am loving my R5 and the lenses I bought for it. Its an amaing piece of technology. Thank you for the review on the R5 II. Keep up the great work and the comedy you inject into your reviews.
You commented that the electronic shutter readout speed was "around 1/60th of a second". That's 14ms, which doesn't sound particularly fast. In early reviews I have been hearing numbers like 6.25ms? Did you mispeak or were multiple earlier sources incorrect? I would think that 1/60 sec, an entire wingbeat of a small hummingbird, would be very noticable?
Apparently on the R5 mk II you can no longer do a rapid right index finger switch between stills-video-stills using the m fn button that's right next to the shutter ? I love that feature on the R5 for sports & wildlife.

@@yawningmarmot i appreciate the added weatherproofing it offers. I rarely use flashes so i just keep it on most of the time.
@@lukapogo Makes sense. I usually shoot video so it would be a real hassle taking it on and off to mount the mics :)
@@yawningmarmot I get you. But it really isn't hard to do once you figure out how you're supposed to do it. You don't even need a ton of force, just the right movement
Keep in mind compared to other stacked sensors the dynamic range is on par with the a1 and slightly beats the z8. So apples to apples it is great.
Got this camera and it's a monster! I feel like I'm cheating when taking photos, too easy.
At 15:36 Jordan mentions "Canon's own XLR adapter". Anyone have any idea what adapter he's talking about?
What brand of CFexpress card did you use in the canon R5 mark ii? I heard that the CFexpress is also one of the leading cause of overheat the camera. It seems like your overheating test results are better than mine. I got only 55 minutes in 4K fine 24 fps whereas you got 74 minutes.
So what to get for filming action sports? This or a Z8?
Wonder if the hot shoe cover from the R7 or R3 would fit? The R7 one works fine. I put a piece of gaffer tape over it so it doesn’t accidentally slide out (after one fell off somewhere in the field). Lifting a piece of gaffer tape is easier than trying to hold a button down while sliding it off.
This video is both informative and fun to watch. Love to the team.
Fun video.
SRaw is line skipped, the only way to get very detailed 4K/60P is to shoot 8K/60P raw and convert in post.
Great video guys.
One quick Question... Does it have dual base iso for video?
Will it cool down much faster if you just switch the cf-express card to a new cold one after a shutdown?
Super recording and material! Thank you for the story about Canon and the review of the R5 Mark II. The R5 Mark II is already on its way to me. I am mainly afraid of the ventilation holes when taking pictures in the forest, on meadows, on the beach, etc. (small bugs, midges, sand, dust and other dirt). What can you say about it? What is your opinion? Nikon Z9/Z8 and Sony A1/A7xxx / A9xxx do not have such holes.
Is Mike a Canon ambassador? if he is not, then he should!
Thank you for another great review 胡子哥. And Mike is hilarious!
No oversampled 40K60 ? What the hey ? This is a dealbreaker for many I would think.
they have a 4K60 SRAW mode. it's sharper than the regular 4K60 mode but not as sharp as the 4K30 mode.
I have the camera now and getting the hotshoe cover off is no exaggeration! I predict that the plastic pin that is holding it will break off pretty soon if you take it on and off a lot. BTW, on a different note, when the video switched to Jordan the graded C-log2 footage looked great! 👍🏻
Love Mike! Funny energy added to this one. Great video, super informative 🎉😁
For wildlife it's a compelling upgrade.
The r5 mark i has had those same recording timelimits ever since they added the high temp setting. Why no comparison to that?? Whats the point of comparing to the original firmware which no one uses?
About the hot shoe cover: using the ‘button’ didn’t work for me, but pushing from the lens side makes it pop off with no effort for me!
I finally tore it off and filed down the pin at an angle. Works great now!
@@niccollsvideo that was plan B for me :)
can you do a r5ii vs z8 comparison?
Well, if we wondered how the R5 resist wear and tear, now we know we can trust it :D
Great job on the video! Mike is a cool dude. 👍
What’s the song at 2:47?
That’s in video mode. In stills it is closer to 1/160th which is quite respectable.
What camera did yall shoot this on?
Apparently on the R5 mk II you can no longer do a rapid right index finger switch between stills-video-stills using the m fn button that's right next to the shutter ? I love that feature on the R5 for sports & wildlife.
