Great video 20 megapixels is more than enough Been wanting this camera for some time now glad to see the price dropped so now’s my time to get one even though my wife might kill 😬 if I buy any more gear lol
I prefer the R6 simply because 20mp is more than enough for me and I prefer to perfect my composition without thinking "don't worry because you can always crop". And if I need more megapixels, I use the Enhance feature of Lightroom and double the pixels 👌 It works really fine !
YES! I've compared R6 ENHANCE files to R5 files at 45 MP and more often than not, the R6 files are sharper and more detailed than the R5 files. So it's great when needed (which is rare).
Upgraded to the R6 from 7d mkii and I was blown away, shooting mainly wildlife and the occasional landscape the eye focus tracking and ibis was a massive step up, I was considering the R6 mkii but I couldn’t justify the extra £550 for 4 megapixels.
i traded my 5dmkiv for a r6 since i'm more of a hybrid shooter so i didn't really care so much about the loss in megapixels and honestly i don't regret the change one bit. the bump in low light performance was such a good bonus but overall it all just depends on on what your budget and what you shoot.
Really fair and objective comparison...best I have seen to date. I have been shooting with the R6 for about 4 months now with no regrets. Great content as usual and keep up the good work. Cheers!
The R5 is a clear winner for anyone who sees the R5 as an upgrade to the R6 - it can be difficult to go from a 30mp 5d4, to a 20mp R6. Being able to crop an R5 image from landscape to portrait and still have 19 megapixels is definitely a nice pro for the R5
It's definitely a nice ability to have to be able to crop in and still have a pretty high resolution! Again probably comes down to the price for most people. Also the type of photography I think. Personally for something like landscape photography I think the extra megapixels are great. Something like portraits, maybe not as important for me.
Just upscale the R6 files using Adobe Camera Raw "Enhance" feature when needed. I tested about 50 files (portrait, landscape, studio) from both using the best RF lenses. Using ENHANCE on the R6 files then outputting in Adobe Camera Raw to 45 MP yielded sharper more detailed images than the 45 MP coming out of the R5 (viewed at 100% zoom on a 5K monitor). This sold me on the R6 (Mark II actually) over the R5. I had owned the 5D IV and R for a while and was hesitant about getting 24 MP for a camera until I did this. That's when I realized that MP was overrated. I've actually had 8 MP 1D Mark II files posted up on city buses (billboard size too) that looked phenomenal. 24 MP is a great sweet spot. There is nothing I can't print with the R6 Mark II.
So glad I came across this comparison video! I've been on the fence between the R5 and R6, and you've helped me realize the R6 is the clear winner for my needs (photography-focused) as Black Friday/Cyber Monday approaches. I did catch wind of a recent leak around the R6 Mark II though, so that's making me wonder if I should wait for that (release date unknown). Any thoughts on that?
So glad it was useful! Ooooh that's a tricky one, ultimately might depend on your budget and how quickly you want it haha also potentially the R6 could drop a bit in price if they do release a Mark II, but since it's still a great camera I can't imagine it would drop much. Let me know what you decided!
loved your overview! I started with the R6, then the R5, and i also reach more and more my R5: the mode switch system between video/photo modes is way more enjoyable, even if the R6 would have been enough. it's been a bit rough for me to get used to the high resolution pics with the R5, but I think R6 photography is enough. for people serious with video I do think the R5 is really important because of the possibilities and file management in 4K and high fps with the different CF cards is a game changer. using both together is the best combo i've had ever!
This was so very helpful & answered many of the questions I had. I especially appreciate that you presented the info in a way that a non-pro could understand - thank you!
Coming off a Canon 5D Mark IV and have no idea where to go. I liked the Mark Iv, but there's no doubt the focusing systems have become so much faster with auto focus.
Old 5D IV user here as well! Honestly the AF systems would have to be the biggest jump for me, most situations it’s almost like having one less thing to thing about. That should be same across R5, R6 and the new R6 mark ii as well (haven’t tried it out). So I guess budget, resolution needs and then video specs if you do any, are really the deciding factors for me. To me the R6 Mark II would have to be a sweet spot for most people in terms of resolution. Big enough for most needs but keeping file sizes down compared to say an R5.
@@TKNORTH Wow, thanks for the detailed response. Wasn't expecting that. I do video on separate camera's and my 5Dmiv is just for photo purposes. But the difficulty is knowing I'm losing 10mp. Would I be shocked if I saw the difference? Is it going to feel like a downgrade just with faster AF systems? or is it completely an upgrade without compromising?
I owned the 5D Mark IV and the EOS-R for quite some time and was hesitant to get the R6 because of the drop in resolution. Then the R6 Mark II came out and I got that. The R6 Mark II is better in almost every single way, especially when it comes to AF reliability and speed. The R6 Mark II NAILS autofocus at a much higher rate than the 5D IV (especially with third party (sigma art) lenses where the 5D struggled and the R6 II is nearly perfect). The differnce in resolution between 24 and 30 MP is almost nil but since the R6 II is way better at getting a sharp photo out of cam, essentially you will get more detailed files. I shot hockey once with the R6 II and it nailed 99% of photos even using eye AF. I would be lucky to get 50% with the 5D IV or even 70% with the 1D Mark III. I've also upscaled the R6 II files using Adobe Camera Raw's Enhance Super Resolution feature and frankly it will even beat the R5's native 45 MP files when I do this (using the best RF lenses, zoomed to 100% on a 5K monitor). There is nothing I can print on the R5 that I couldn't print with the R6 II (same for crops obviously) let alone the 5D IV. The 5D IV was amazing for low light and dynamic range but the R6 Mark II is actually 1 stop better.
I have both and always reaching for the R5. I had the R6 before getting the R5 and for what I do the R5 was better but the R6 is really a great camera as well. Whatever you choose both are great.
Thanks for your review! I'm enthusiast photographer, I shot mostly stills. So, for me it comes down to great camera for photo shots and have best value. I decide to go with R6 and for me it's a clear winner for many obvious reasons. I just purchased factory refurbished R6 with RF 24-105 4f L glass from Canon online store for $2420(R6 body for $1700) on holidays discount. Can't wait of its arrival to start shooting. I'm upgrading from DSLR to mirrorless.
As a wedding photographer I really prize the my twin R6 bodies over the r5. Generally I don't crop much, only to straighten and occasionally remove extraneous details. What's more super high res shows more of the unflattering details of my couples' skin in their images, and eats up storage on my computer and drives. What I do value with the R6 is better low light performance for overall cleaner images. I would like it if the R6 was made with the same LCD and hard build quality but it's not bad at all. Still if someone gave me an r5, I'm definitely not going to be sad 😂
Many years ago, when ultra-high MP cameras started to come out, I remember seeing a video that showed some headshots from a model using a lower-resolution camera and a high one. She looked fantastic with the lower MP camera, but the higher MP camera showed all her facial imperfections, including the zits she covered with makeup. There is a reason that some portrait photographers still celebrate low MP cameras like the D700 and the 5D (original).
hi i have a r6 and have been shooting in AV and most of the time with auto ISO, i find at sometimes when i am taking a shot i have notices that the auto ISO will change away from the auto ISO which i am finding it a bit annoying, i am wondering if you have had anything simular with your r6 would really like your view on this problem and if not could you guide me to what i may be doing wrong yours thankfully B Perry
Hi there! I haven't noticed this ever occurring but I can only think of one thing to check... I would check your custom dials setup, especially the control ring if you are using an RF lens or the adapter with this. Just check what you have assigned ISO to, as it's quite easy to bump some of these without realising. Outside of that I'm not sure what else to suggest other than getting Canon services to possibly take a look, because it shouldn't be happening on its own. Hope you can sort it out!
R6 performs better in autofocus at lower light levels -- that's per the specs of sensitivity and I assume it bears out in real world testing. Also, fewer megapixils means less degradation; this bears repeating: "When it comes to megapixels, more isn't always better, as cramming a higher pixel-count onto a sensor may actually degrade the quality, rather than improve it, as the photosites that create the pixels will need to get smaller and smaller - and hence gather less light - as the number goes up." I LOVE the R6 and would presumably love the R5 (except the price). The autofocus is out of this world and has reignited my passion after a miserable run with AF and slow lenses with 7D. However, I don't know that I can ever update firmware again; my only camera update in a million years - from 1.4 to1.7 resulted in banding and a second update rendered my camera's buttons to shoot inoperable. Now it's at Canon repair at a $400 cost to me despite my pristine R6 prior to the update.
loving this channel. My channel is predominantly hair tutorials and trying to decide what to go for. i had a 90d but struggled with light flicker when close to fluorescent light. i normally have my tripod set up around 2 metres away and when i post edit i tend to zoom in but with the iphone 14 (48 mpixels) which i’ve been using it can pixelate when zooming in with the editing app. obviously that isn’t good . so what would you suggest out of the two. or if there is anything else you would recommend then let me know but it must have a flip screen and be full frame
The EVF and LCD differences are both mentioned in the vid! Im still frequently using both the R5 and R6 and personally don’t find the difference an issue at all. But everyone is different!
Honestly great review bro fr. I'm a hybrid shooter that leans toward videos more due to me making multiple reels for Instagram for work, The R5 is my dream camera & I honestly did not want to settle because I don't even take photos like that. This just solidified my choice
For most people it probably comes down to money. If you have it get the r5. If you don’t , get the r6. They’re both big heavy weights, can’t go wrong with either tbh
After I've seen your comparison, I had to subcribe your channel. I own Canon R6 and Sony A7R IV. I realized, I don't have to go for EOS R5. Thanks, I saved more than 1000 dollars... 😉
I’ve gone from 5D3 to R6. It’s an okay upgrade, but I am not s a fan of the EVF. I’m curious - do you notice much difference with the EVF jumping between the R5 and R6 given the difference in resolution? As you say everything depends on what you want - for you it’s not an issue but for me it is.
@@lucidparalysis2794 after a little more time with the R6 I do think it's worth it. For starters I can use my back catalogue of film era lenses - and they work very well. I did buy an RF lens (50mm f1.8) and it is very fast, light and accurate and makes the camera an easy walk around set up - and a fair bit more discreet than the 5D3. Overall recommend.
Well, cropped images on a FF are not as high quality as what you'd get from a dedicated crop sensor camera in my experience. But, the R5 is in my opinion the clear winner here. The low light performance of either camera is about the same from what I have seen. Is anyone else really confused by Canon's naming conventions?
Thank you for the detailed information; am I going to notice the difference in picture/video quaility using the R6 with a RF/L lens vs the 45-megapixel R5? thanks
I shoot with both as well, thought this review was poor. The biggest reason I use the R5 nearly all the time (stills anyway) is the autofocus, really clunky (I mean really clunky) on the R6 to change from tracking mode to spot mode, something I use all the time and need to get to super quickly. All the other differences are neither here nor there.
i dont get you guys to most of event photographers for shooting weddings in restaurants and indoor venues iso performance is very important so for this type of people r6 is clear winner
Don’t these cameras have different target users? People who need a fast workflow and don’t require heavy cropping or large print-outs will favour the R6 and now the R6 MK II.
I can’t say I’ve actually looked at the 50/60fps super closely side by side! But if I know I’m using slower frame rates I’ll usually just pick up the R5 anyway. For video in general tbh. Custom video modes is a big one for me though! Simple thing but man it makes a difference
TLDR: if you’re only using for pictures, there’s isn’t really any big difference between the two. If you consider video elements and abilities, the R5 starts to stand out over the R6
Well, honestly, you separated shit from crap. 😦 Looking at the breakdown and the fan responses, it is a great question of choice. Maybe, when it is time to make my decision, and I like to have the best, may go with the R5, since I like to own the best whether I use it or not. The key and the breaking point here is how you separated the photo from the video category. To me, that was the beauty of your review. Thank You.
I always found "heavy weight is good, it counters lens" argument stupid. It's heavy and unbalanced, lets make it heavier... You secure the system by holding under the lens, problem solved. Another solution? Don't use a heavy lens.
Just as example.. I looked up the current price including the card reader on b&h. Pretty nuts. I have some others now but that one I got when the R5 was first released, their wasn’t many other available options at that time
I use the R6 for photography only. Canon closing their system to 3rd party lens companies is a big disadvantage compared to Sony. Overall I think, for photography, Sony with 3rd party lens support provides greater value proposition and much wider flexibility. That’s the sales pitch 🙂
After 30 years of professional photography, 4 years of real estate video. I'm finally starting to accept that Canon sucks. Been on a break for about a year. Tried to film a car in 60 degree weather today. R6 lasted about 20 min before over heating. camera wasn't even recording for half of that 20 min. I have 2 R6's. They both suck. R5 a little better, but not by much. Got all new RF pro glass. So frustrated. I'd rather go back to my EOS R and older EF lenses with ND adapter. Would love to have the extra 10k plus back in my account. THANKS CANON! Now I see why people get divorced after 30 years. BTW this comparison is bias. Having to carry and manage both CF and SD cards totally sucks. Also remember you will be using low light in many scenarios. That's a huge factor especially for weddings and events. Never forget the majoprty of your contant will be seen on small screens and never printed. not large anyway. that goes for 95% of the people here. You don't buy these cameras strictly for studios, If so just get an Iphone 14 pro max. seriously! You also aren't buying these cameras for pro films for that matter. I could go on, but honestly if I was just starting, and I'm telling everyone I know, who asks. Go Sony if you want a good cross breed. Canon burned their pros a long time ago... If you've been doing this long enough to be a pro, you know..Just trying to help. I'm sure most would rather keep that hard earned money.

I have been looking at Sony for years but I want the VR lens.
Thank you for the detailed information; am I going to notice the difference in picture/video quaility using the R6 with a RF/L lens vs the 45-megapixel R5? thanks
thank you for this review help me a lot !
Cesc Fabregas makes good videos.
Thank you! you really helped me decide
No dual ISO in the r5? Yikes. might have to book a few more shoots and get the R5C
I picked up an R5 open box at Best Buy for 2200 usd. I feel like it was a steal
Great comparisons mate! Love my R5.
Thank you bud!! It’s a great cam 🙌
wow this is a great comparison
super useful - thank you!
Can you not set this easily with custom buttons? It really shouldn't be that clunky! Find it easy on both.
i dont get you guys to most of event photographers for shooting weddings in restaurants and indoor venues iso performance is very important so for this type of people r6 is clear winner
Looking swoll in the face tracking part
What about dynamic range? R5 is better
Don’t these cameras have different target users? People who need a fast workflow and don’t require heavy cropping or large print-outs will favour the R6 and now the R6 MK II.
Thank you very much
R6 has much sharper 4k 60/50fps video. And I didn't know that before I sold my R6 and bought R5. But that custom video modes is game changer with R5.
TNX
Thank you
Nice video!!!
Thanks dude!!
The R6 sounds like the better camera
Well, honestly, you separated shit from crap. 😦 Looking at the breakdown and the fan responses, it is a great question of choice. Maybe, when it is time to make my decision, and I like to have the best, may go with the R5, since I like to own the best whether I use it or not. The key and the breaking point here is how you separated the photo from the video category. To me, that was the beauty of your review. Thank You.
Barrows Station
R5
I always found "heavy weight is good, it counters lens" argument stupid. It's heavy and unbalanced, lets make it heavier...
You secure the system by holding under the lens, problem solved.
Another solution? Don't use a heavy lens.
i'm gonna get the r5 in 2-3 years when more used bodies become available
Family, why are you paying $600 for a 512GB CF express when Angel bird exist? Holy cannoli.
Just as example.. I looked up the current price including the card reader on b&h. Pretty nuts.
I have some others now but that one I got when the R5 was first released, their wasn’t many other available options at that time
@@TKNORTH that makes sense.
People actually use Canon for video?
Why don’t you go with sony
Canon better than Sony
There is no good option for hybrid shooter in Sony. A7IV is so close, but it has 4k 50/60fps crop.
Hmm sell me. For what reasons should I go to Sony and which camera?
I use the R6 for photography only. Canon closing their system to 3rd party lens companies is a big disadvantage compared to Sony. Overall I think, for photography, Sony with 3rd party lens support provides greater value proposition and much wider flexibility. That’s the sales pitch 🙂
@@Bigtbone205 sales pitch; ef to eos r lens adaptor
You are clearly bias
To which?
