Nice, those have to be as rare as a Great White, someone caught one a year or two ago, but rare. I was shocked to see a Whale Shark and a Basking on a video off this pier a few years ago. Tigers and Bulls are the only thing I worry about swimming/diving/snorkeling around here. Yes, I live at Panama City, first I ever heard a Mako this close and certainly looks like one!
Funny how everytime the subject of makos come up inshore noone ever wants to believe it. Even after videos , pics , and one even being landed off the same pier. Its always around cobia season that we see them. One day people will wisen up and realize there are no fences out there to keep them seperated.
Yeah we had an 8 foot nurse shark come 30 feet to the shore of the beach. It was moving slow, so everybody got out of the water quickly. Still a wonderful sight for me nonetheless.
I caught a 280 pound Mako Shark off the Jersey Canyons ( about 2,1/2 hours) off of Brielle N.J . on a Boat called The Last Lady it was a Shark charter, best fighting, Great tasting Shark I have ever tried.
The pectoral fins are too long and it's cruising too slow and sluggish to be a mako. I doubt it's a mako.... reason why.... Makos are speedsters and even in a chum slick they dart around quick! Perhaps a big Blue Shark! There are longfin Makos though, but they are Offshore Pelagics and you'll probably get struck My lightning before you'll see a Longfin Mako inshore! Nice encounter though.....
ROFL -- Mako? Seriously dude? If that's a mako I'm 25 again and I haven't seen 25 in 40 years. Way way way too sluggish to be a mako - makos tend to prefer open water and offshore ledges - and it's the wrong color for a mako - looks more like a white tip to me -- the long pectoral fins and the rounded dorsal fin are clues - plus you can see the white along the tail and pectoral fins -- they come in around the pier to feed on stingrays and crustaceans and are harmless to humans - they are classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List.
For one thing you get in in the water with it i bet he at least bites your ass. they come in close every spring. 1000+ pounder caught west of us not long ago with half a porpoise hanging out of its mouth
That is a Mako, there are no White Tips here. I have lived and dived here for 20 years. Very rare as I have never seen one at all, much less this close to the beach. I've seen Hammers, Tigers, Bulls and Black Tips this close, that is about it.
It's Mako and you're an idiot if you say otherwise... No species of "white tip" shark looks remotely close. The color is EXACTLY the color of a Mako.. what you're seeing is the camera lens distorting the suns reflection off the water. I live there and very well remember when this happened. We get Makos, they are here, more so in early spring, the big ones show up. Now White pointers.. that's an extreme rarity in this area of the gulf.
First thing: I had never heard of them coming so close to shore; second: That is one brilliant shade of blue.
Back in like 87 I saw a guy pull in a monster tiger off that pier.

I'm doing snorkeling on this coming up trip. Never done it... I'll probably get eaten

I fished this pier before it was opened to the public, had it all to myself. Used to be a bathroom in the middle.
I stood right where you were standing
Dude that is neat treat. Wonder what caused it to come into shore like that?
Todzilla386 every year in the Spring the Mako's are all over the panhandle.
They go where ever their favorite food goes.
Awesome to know, just in case I go on vacation that way in the future. Haven't been there since I was a teen.
Guy caught an 850 pound mako off that peer.
Austin Minton damn I was just there for vacation and went in that pier. Do you know when he caught it?
There used to be a picture of a 1050 pound mako someone caught from the pier. As I remember it was over 15 years ago.
Panama has a drop off so it's not a suprise one came this close to shore
Fishing should not be allowed where children swim
