Not really. Most people get away with only a bitemark, from a shark attack. When sharks find something they don’t know what is, they bite it to find out. However, it just so happens that sharks don’t actually like human meat, therefore they will often just make a curious bite and then swim off.

One reason why surfing has always made me nervous to get into, was the fact that when I'm out skateboarding & snowboarding (on groomed runs at least), I won't be dealing with ANY apex predators. But when it comes to hiking, camping, kayaking, diving, surfing, it is a natural RESET BUTTON on your power as a human, and a reminder that you too are just a potential meal for a larger creature.
Spot on mate. There's a reason why we have legs and they have fins and bigger teeth. In UK I think we've only technically had one recorded shark attack in British waters and it wasn't even serious. Someone just got their finger bitten. I think it's more River fish, like pike that attack people and that's something that happens only once every so many years. I did surfing once when in Devon and even though it's an amazing experience, the constant thought of something big lurking nearby gave me anxiety, even though it was very unlikely. It's not official, but we do supposedly get great whites in Devon and Cornwall, just as you go through the channel and out into the Atlantic. Same with Greenland sharks on North Coast. I once stayed near John O' Groats with some friends and during time we was up there, on a couple of beaches, each had a washed up seal with big chunks missing. We thought it may of been a Greenland shark or possibly orcas, because we definitely do get orcas.

Took them long enough to get to him. I thought they’d have those jet skis waiting just outside the break, just a few seconds away.
@@calimon00 They should, their response team was way too long.
He did not panic and that saved him. Salute, bro. ❤❤❤
Shout out to the announcer keeping his calm and directing the effort towards him
Definitely
Those few seconds where you don't see him......heart stopping! 😮
imagine walking into your living room after work and there's a shark on your couch. that's how the shark feels.
The fact that he's not in the EMERGENCY ROOM with LIFE ALTERING DAMAGES, is nothing short of a MIRACLE. To say he's lucky is not giving him enough credit 🙄
I admire him immensely for having the composure and courage to fight off the shark, but let's be honest, what are the chances of surviving a shark attack?
@@neoanderson4006 depends on how serious the attack was. I am No expert on sharks but I guess it was some kind of probing Attack.
He's also a BADASS. Not just LUCKY
🙏 amen!!!!!!!
The word miracle is becoming so cringe as it takes away from the courage put on by this person.
Life is precious and this was truly a moment to show us this reality.
He said, "Happy to never compete ever again" that says it all
Me before clicking: "He's either gonna be Australian or dead."
He even said, he's be happy to never compete again. shows you how serious that was. Anyone in sports have a hard time quitting no matter how bad it gets
Yeah because without him saying that, nobody would ever know just how serious being attacked by a shark is...
to be fair to him, the report did label him as a world champ. its a lot harder to quit when you want to prove yourself.
@@mydogeatspuke 😂
Seven years ago! Time has flown….but the memory of watching this on the news…..
"That shark must have thought he was a seal" - yeah, right.... Can't believe people who say that.
"I'm happy to not even compete ever again"
Finally, someone who values their life over the sport. Don't see that very often.
Idk man, Surfing is not that dangerous and the chance of this happening again is very slim. I dont think he sould give up his passion bc of this
@@jackvanhove288 funny how you have 15 comments each with 3,000 upvotes saying "Hur dur surfer says he's quitting competition, he smart to value his life" as if there's a precedent that surfers are massively risking their lives everytime they set foot in water. I think the YT comment section overhaul is just a bunch of intellectually inept bored teenagers.
@@elliswilliams1050 Seems like the people in the comments have a bigger trauma for open waters and sharks than the surfer in the video
@@jackvanhove288 In most beaches around the world, you're probably more likely to be struck by lightning twice in a row than you are to be bit once in your life by a shark.
However there are a lot of great white sharks that propagate the north west and southern coasts of Australia so the odds probably increase substantially over there. But even so, most sharks and particularly great whites never attack humans on purpose as they only attack when they've mistakened someone for a seal, usually they'll bite someone's leg and immediately let go and swim off. Bullsharks on the other hand are a different story, not only can they survive in practically any type of water including Rivers and Lakes, they'll eat you alive and not even leave the bones left over, they're basically like pitbulls of the sea but 100x worse, but don't let this comment section hear about this lol
yea man value ur life just go back inside ur plastic bubble away of dangers lol
The other sharks are never going to let that shark live it down. "Remember the time Fred went after that surfer and only got the leash to his board? Millions of people saw him come up empty, haven't seen anything that bad since Jaws 3 in 3D."
The pathetic sharks! (Viz comic)
Wow. I consider him a hero for being able to get away. That fight or flight was on, So scary though.
You could really feel his fear at the end of the video, gave me chills listening to him. So many are not near as lucky as he was.
I am so glad he’s OK. I also must commend the rescue team as well, as they acted very quickly. He’s lucky to be alive to tell his story. He is definitely here on earth for a reason. Very very scary. I can’t even imagine.
It was only a baby,it was just playing with the rope lol
Dramatic much?
The rescue team picked him up and left on of the photographers in the water. You should read his account. Yikes
You call that quick
???
He might realize Jesus Christ is lord now, and surfing is only perishable earthly pleasure...
Seems almost a little inhumane to interview him right after he almost died
I'm glad he's okay. Dude, don't feel any shame about walking away! Count your blessings and move on.
Bro that was me as a kid years and years ago. Just laying on a float then my life flashed before my eyes. That is honestly so terrifying to be face to face with a shark.
Ocean creatures are unintentionally the scariest animals to get hurt by. My brother got jabbed in the ankle by a small stingray and he said it was the most painful thing he had experienced. (Apparently there was a bunch of babies around because the lifeguard station had multiple people with their feet in buckets lol)
That's why you always carry a spear

He'll never forget this moment and theres no chance I'd ever get back in the water i hope he sticks to this decision - something like that is life changing
Mate this was 9 years ago. He’s competed plenty of times since.
@@DisobeyZOG nooo wayyy I genuinely believed him when he said he would never compete again 😆
He actually wrestled with the shark for a second! Most impressive thing I ever saw, kudos big guy!
One day when he has grandkids he's gonna have the BEST STORY EVER to tell them! And video to prove it when they don't believe him. Not sure they'll let him come to school parent day and talk about his job though. Can you imagine?
@D_Abai believe me, none of this can save you... only Jesus Christ can
Right I was thinking the same thing!
Whoa… he is sooo blessed to have left that attack unscathed. The time it took the rescue team seemed like forever but it was extremely choppy out there.
