In celebration of passing 100k subscribers, we have a bit of a special and unique video for you, ILS 27 breakoff runway 24 with ATC.
Today you can join in on the flightdeck of this KLM Martinair Cargo Boeing 747-400 ERF flying an instrument approach followed by a visual circling manoeuvre to land.
The video starts in the descent over the north sea west of Amsterdam. We are then radar vectored via the north of Schiphol on a high extended right downwind for runway 27 (buitenveldertbaan). We intercept the ILS for 27 and are eventually given a breakoff to land on runway 24 (kaagbaan).
The breakoff is a visual circling manoeuvre. First the instrument approach is followed for 27. When in an appropriate position the pilot then transitions to visual outside references to position the aircraft to land on a different runway.
This procedure is often used during south-west storms when the wind only allows landings on 24. This time though, it just saved a lot of taxi time and fuel.
Thank you very much for watching

I hadn't seen in many many years that "thanks/ it was great flying with you" handshake, I thought that tradition had gone totally for good. I'm glad some pilots still regard it. Great and enjoyable video, thank you.

Crazy Clown I wasn't being sarcastic. I was complimenting. I've been on so many flight with rough landings and being on a flight like this would've been a dream. So now bud you owe me an apology for being so rude and biting my head off.

So now I know what a breakoff landing is, and beautifully executed.
I once experienced a similar situation in a Cessna 172, lining on a runway and breaking at the intersection of the crossing runway then touchdown, literally a 90 degree turn. What a ride!

Beautiful video of the landing of the Boeing 747 - 400. It is exciting to stay in the cockpit and see the track approaching with its positional lights, and admire the control of the drivers in this difficult maneuver. If I could I would have given the two crew members a space shuttle for their skill.
Thanks to them, and have a good trip. 7958

Returnedexpatriate a lot of this is not true. 06 departures happen very occasionally on the first morning departures. 36R arrivals are definitely not “not allowed”, happens almost on a daily basis, when the winds are from the north. 18L departures also do happen a lot during departure peaks.

I've tried this break-off approach in a simulator, and it's not too hard if the weather isn't too crazy. There are also circling-landings where you fly past the runway, turn 180 degrees, and then have a rather short distance to align to the runway; those are a bit more tricky.

When I saw the title I thought that he was going for a 'Go around'. But now I understand that he used the ILS and then switched from ILS to manual to land on the Kaagbaan. Nice! I am a Dutchman by the way living in The Hague but frequently visiting Amsterdam (South East E-buurt) where I most of the times enjoy the passing in the air of the airplanes coming in to land.
