Last night, I blind taste-tested the Calumet 16 against EH Taylor, Knob Creek 15 year and Stag Jr. And as good as those other bourbons are...and they are fantastic...I picked the Calumet 16. It is that good folks.

I found a bottle of 16 in Boulder, CO last week while I was there for a concert. It was fantastic. I wholeheartedly agree with your review. 15 was good, but 16 is great!

I picked up c16 in chicago at a local liquor store I now have 6 bottles and one bottle of c15
I’ve had 14. Two bottles of the 15. And two of 16. 14 was ok. Both 15’s I have taste like smoky cherry soda and you poured pop rocks in the glass. The 16 is more mellow imo. Smoky tobacco woodsy. I like them both equally. I would be happy for either.

@@TheAverageDrinker Liked more than the Sourh Carolina releases of Sam Houston 12 and 14 inna blind tasting. Will repeat in a couple of weeks. Picked up vanilla, spice and oak. It came in 2 of 4.
Agree. It is even better than Sam Houston 15 which was my previous favorite in this category.

Yeah Calumet doesn't pay for reviews. Same with Sam Houston. So glad you liked this. I think it is a 'hitter' for sure.

@@joegrone9671 yeah that’s the rumor. It’s the same distillate and each year they up the age and the proof so less and less to go around. There are multiple batches of the calumet 16 around now I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s true and they did more calumet and cut out sam houston which was just a smaller barrel blend version

I've been on the fence on this one. At the price range for a 16 year its not crazy but for my budget it's on the high end. I'm content with so much other stuff 80 bucks and under. It has been getting a lot of attention from the whisketube world though so I'm seeing it often. Thanks for the review!!
I'm in same boat. I found a small store with three bottles at $159 and I didn't get it. I really need to save money right now. Still... if it's really good it'd be nice to pour for friends. On the other hand... we could buy two and then sell one in a year?

I don't believe there was ever a Calumet 13. It started out at 12, they didn't release anything the next year, then it's been 14, 15, and now 16. The 14 has an amazing start to it but to me gets a dirty mustiness right before the mid palate starts. Just ruins the rest no matter how good it should be. Even letting it go for several months didn't dissipate that enough. The 15 is a cherry bomb banger all the way through. Top bottle for sure. This 16 I've only just started to taste via a sample. There's a tiny bit of that must early in the taste. It may be what you're calling "bitter". Drives me nuts because it's surely a top bottle without that. For me the jury is still out on this one.
I actually love the short, mild bitterness. To me, it adds to the complexity of the pour. I just love it so much!
Their only 13yo was released in a very small batch as their Small Batch in the older wide bottle and it was a mix of 13yo/7yo bourbons. Then they switched it to 14yo/8yo for the remainder of that expression release.
15 was good but 16 is better it's a bottle that you need that you need in your bourbon category
