I broke down and bought this over the weekend; my friends and I all loved it. I told them where I got it and that there were three more bottles available. Two left the party to go buy a bottle for themselves. I'm guessing they weren't rushing to the store to replace my bottle. I'm not a fan of heavy tannins, flavors like tobacco and leather... no thanks. But this 16 is as you described. A sweet oak that's just perfect. WAY better than something like Rare Breed. She's warm and round and sweet and there's a depth of flavor... toffee and vanilla and stuff I haven't figured out yet. I'm giving her a 9.1 and not a point less.
This comment convinced me to buy it.
@@a68freak Did you get it? Did you like it? I'm sipping a bit right now.
I scored 2 bottles about 10 weeks ago. I can’t wait to pop a top on one.
Once you get to the $100 price point there are far more disappointments than surprises, however this bottle is not just a pleasant surprise it does something that hardly any of the other bottles at this price do; it drinks above the price. It’s so damn good I actually feel bad for pouring it because every drink is another drink away from never having it again.
Their 15 year is one of my all time favorite pours! I'm patiently waiting for the 16 year to show up in my area. Thanks for the review!
Definitely glad I picked this one up. Looking forward to this one! Thanks for the review Matt
👀 “Thanks Kevin Hodgins for finding me this bottle”…..so strange when I just found your channel and then to see your name in video receiving special thanks! 😂. All us Kevin Hodgins must be good people!
Been waiting to see your opinion on this one!
You totally nailed it 100% agree with your assessment of this . Like yourself i particularly enjoy the notes you get on a well aged bourbon. Probably my favorite release this year to date
obviously lot of good stuff released in the fall but Still could end up being 1 of the better releases this year .
Great review as always.
I got 2 of these. Drinking one and bunkering the second.
Matt for that blind flight, try to add Jefferson’s Presidential 16. Curious to see this one in the mix.
It’s my favorite as well. What a difference an extra year makes. Ours has been open for almost a month and now we get a smoky, or ashy taste on it. It’s fantastic.
Glad you reviewed this! Wife bought me this for Fathers Day and I haven't opened it yet.
Open it. Enjoy it. Take pictures with it and send them to your friends but tell them you're not going to share unless they come over and bring ribs or something.
Bought a bottle on Father's day to treat myself. I haven't cracked it yet but I cant wait to get into it.
Great review and excited for that blind! King of Creeks arrived today and can’t wait to crack it open later!
Good review, I’ll have to see if I can get my hands on one.
My grandma is from the UP and she always had trenary toast every time we went to visit her. I loved that stuff. Ive watched a bunch of your videos and they are all hilarious but that comment bought back a lot of great memories so I can drink to that! Cheers!
wonderful review! I'd love to see a "complete collection vs each other" review in real time!
I love my 15 year... looks like I'll be hunting the 16 now! Thanks Brotha :)
I have been waiting for this review! I like it a lot and have a bottle in my bunker!
Your review of Calumet 16yr was awesome! I was on the fence about buying a bottle because I was concern about it being too oaky & oaky stink. After watching this, I am going to buy a bottle!
lol loving the newsboys song reference and just subbed just for that :) Excellent review! Just picked this up at Dustin Silvestri's recommendation. Really enjoying it so far!
Bought a bottle of this today after watching this review! Looking forward to it.
I just LOVE your reviews. Can’t click on them fast enough. I’ve been waiting for this one from you. Some folks hype things up and you end up spending your alcohollowance on some absolutely average shit. I’ll be waiting to hear what Matt has to say, from now on.
Well,,,gonna have to trys dat,, I love the Calumet 8 year, one of my favs..love Sam Houston 15 too. Thanx for another great show Matt..
Keep on keeping on ........
Great review as always! Got my eye out for a bottle! Usually winning horses want to spend their winnings on a nice looking mare, but their owners think differently:)
Love the channel Matt. Keep these hits coming while keeping your liver healthy!
Curious - do you ever review any Willett product? What’s your opinion on that distillery?
I bought this for my buddy’s graduation and was unsure if he was going to like it. This video makes me feel better about my purchase.
8.8 - wowee! Thanks for the review (as always)
Grew up 30 minutes from Trenary and that Trenary Toast comment had me doing haha’s. Also home to the Outhouse Races… what a beautiful town. Looking into this bottle so thanks for the review!
LOL with the laundry left too long note! My bottle is halfway finished already. Great review even with the ambient noise 😉
Nice... can't wait to get cracking... looking forward to that blind...Have A Wonderful week everyone...
Yes I’m looking forward to the blind too 💪
Heading to Colorado tomorrow, should be there by Friday evening.
Did you just bust out an old school News Boys chorus in there? Haha love it!
C16 is damn good!! Favorite release so far this year although I’m still trying to find a FG KC IIII
Nice review! Now, find yourself some yooperlites up there in da U.P. hey!
This is sitting on the shelf at some stores here in Utah. Looks like I’ll have to buy myself a Christmas present
Great video. 👍
This review was oozing with respect
Which review had the respect blowup? Somehow I missed it. Thanks!
Matt, love your channel! Can you do a blind comparison of this Calumet 16 versus the Knob Creek 18-year? Please vote up if you folks agree…
Just bought!!!! Saw it at....wait....wait.....Costco!!!! Will open soon. Thanks buddy
5:20 Loving the Newsboys reference (thats the only band I know who sings that song.)
Wonderful video
I have the 15 yr. Now I have to pick up this one up? So, the light bill doesn't get paid. Oh well, candles it is!
Good review. My bottle has a strange musty funk on the finish. Just compared this to Dickel BiB. It's rumored to be 13 years old and no funk. So... I don't know.
I Love Live Live this expression!! Wowza!! I adore it! Hey we all have different palettes! This Calumet Farm expression is delicious and I find it nice and complex! It does have depth and that matters to me!! I primarily love high end peated single malt scotch but this kind of Bourbon is spectacular! Live a damn fine 100% Rye too!! Hey will you do some scotch reviews?!!! It would be fabulous! Lagavulin. Ardbeg, Talisker, Kilchomen! So many that are mind blowing whisky!! Cheers!
Please Matt, for me try adding a bit of the calumet 15. I loved the 16 but wish it had just a touch of that cherry that the 15 had, and wished the 15 had the oak of the 16.
Just did the 16 vs SH 15 last week and I liked the 16 more
The Newsboys shout out got me hahaha
I just got this bottle today. Can't wait to break it out.
This is a yearly bottle for me I have gotten one every year since there release. Drink one and bunker the other all fantastic but 15 yr is when it really hit its stride.
Catching up on older episodes. Calumet 16 is only $124 at my local store, so I picked up a bottle and may get a backup. Heard nothing but good reviews.
There is a steady stock of these at my local liquor stores. I believe I might need to try one now. This bottle is kinda steep for me at $160 though.
I think my biggest takeaway from this review is that Ben Jones was not only able to train a magnificent horse, but untold funnels.
I was going to suggest adding Lucky Seven Proprietor 14 year to the blind, but I remember your bottle was super high proof! Do you think the heat would make it stand out with too much to fit in that blind?
I have both and it’s actually a great matchup. Both are from Barton and Lucky Seven drinks way below its proof.
I would say if it had a bit more sweetness. It would be right up there
With pappy 10, Russell reserve 13 and pappy 15
Your Newsboys reference made me to buy a second bottle. lol. I’m not religious, but I took your song as a sign to buy more. ;)
Yes. Yes, it is. Cheers!
Whoops! I meant love, love, live! lol! I got carried away in excitement thinking about this outstanding Bourbon!!!
Agreed! I had to google "trenary toast".
I’ll pick one up now.
Thank you WTWT for suffering through this job at 4:30pm so you could share it with whiskeytube!
When you break out “He Reigns,” you know it’s something special! 🤣
Did you ever do that Sam Houston-Cal-KC flight fight?
Good ole 3rd day. Took me back bro!
Keeping this as one of my semi-daily pours. Just grabbed another bottle locally for $135. Hard to find a better valued bourbon these days.
Good stuff.
8.8 !!! What did the 15yr score???
Wonder if the 16 will be widely available at retail like the 15 or if it will get scarce.
I’ve seen Calumet 16 in Kentucky and Tennessee a few times so far and I don’t hit up that many liquor stores, for what that anecdote is worth
When I was in high school, I drove a Chevy Citation.
This is also one that i think that the palette decides if it's good. Like the gene that can make cilantro taste like soap to so many.
I’m with you on well aged Kentucky bourbon. That’s why I’m not into the craft scene. I’d assume you’re not into it either? I love KC 12, KC 15 , 12 year Elijah Craig BF and the 14 year BP Proprietor. I have a 12 year 1792, but haven’t opened it yet. I have too many open bottles. Hopefully, that’s good as well. I’m still waiting on the NC 18.
Sweet oak and sharp oak are so close and when you get that sweet oak it’s a Ric Flair whoooo.
These Calumet's are Batched. Can you please provide the batch number ID for this one you just reviewed? I know there is currently just one Calument 16 but a year from now they will be coming out with a new batch.
I've been trying to find this and I've seen the 14 and 15 but I cannot locate a 16. Tough in Texas anyway but sheesh.
I found one! My wife is going to shoot me, but it's going into storage for a special day I can share it with my son.
Matt, a store near me has this at 124, is that a buy or what??
The worship songs are literally the best. I crack up every time. Please keep that up 😂😂😂
I've been eyeing a bottle of Calumet 12 (I think? Definitely not single barrel, it's like 86 proof) in the glass cabinet of my local liquor store. The more bourbons I try, the more of a billy goat I become, and the less likely I am to try it considering it's like $80; because I believe very firmly that anything below 100 proof is not worth over $50. Not as long as Rare Breed, Knob Creek SB exist for $45. I'm just tired of buying expensive bottles and finding out they're not even as good as Woodford Reserve standard, and I think I've decided proof is the biggest deciding factor on that.
Amazingly it is sitting on the shelf at my local store. I need to grab another before the secret is out.
thinking the exact same thing
Rut roh… we’ll have to add this one to the list..
Seriously Matt!you know that the Knob Creek 9 year old single Barrel 120 proof should be in the blind flight!and I'll bet you it wins!why not? let's see if those big boys can beat Mr 9 year old! don't be afraid my friend or are you?🤔
Bussin out some Newsboys! 🤪
I wanted to love the 15 but the medicinal cherry note was way too strong for my taste. You didn't get any cherry with this? I've been holding out on this bottle because of my dislike for the 15.
All reviews I've seen have said the 16 doesn't have that cherry note.
Cherry is present but not the main attraction, it’s very well balanced
Should read the wikipedia page on Alydar.
Matt, I need a professional taster's, wait, NO WTWT's opinion. Am I a monster for sipping Calumet 16 from a martini glass?
More like a gangster
Do a Pappy 15 - Calumet 16 head to head! 😁
Do you have the 14 and 15 years to compare?
Nope. They gone lol
HARUMF....disrespectful pour... ChEeRs, Matt!
Saw it at total wine for $134. Was their last one. Hesitated. Came back next day and it was gone. I still have 1.5 bottles of SH15 left so I’m sure they are close.
Oh well.
My SH15 KY-1 batch was my favorite until i had this. It is even more balanced if you can believe. So good.
He reigns
Just found a 15 for $89 last week.
I’m here!
I like Sweet Oak and I can not Lie!
I don’t even care that I will probably never own a bottle of this whisky, watching Matt’s reviews almost make up for it. Almost.
Let's make some old fashioned(s) and whiskey sours, amiright? 😆
I’m with you on the type of flavor profile I enjoy… sweet oakiness with deep dark flavor notes
This is an expensive biography about a horse. But, at least you get whiskey. You know, like the prize in a happy meal. You get rewarded for your effort.
You are a sucker for wood. Nice Matt
8.8?! What’s above phenomenal?
It’s a solid 9.0 compared to everything available today!
Appreciate your content!
Yes this is a really good whiskey. Yes it's the best Calumet so far. But is it worth $150...? IMO the answer is no. And it's not any bitter oak notes that turn me off. In fact there's nothing that turns me off about it... there just isn't enough WOW factor @ $150 for me. Remus V is just a little bit better ( yes, you can't get it anymore but was $90). I'd rather have the Calumet 15 @ $95 (local costco), than this 16 @ $150. Maybe it opens up more but my bottle's been open for 3 weeks so...
More 90’s worship please 🤣
I prefer older bourbons as opposed to younger stuff too.
My local place has it for $130. I’m a cheap ass and haven’t pulled the trigger yet
