Candy should have gotten manslaughter. And not, walked away free. Whatever trauma she may have experienced at the age of four, to me it doesn't seem enough of an excuse for having killed Betty. I believe there a many, many people who've experienced worse traumas than Candy. But somehow they don't just snap one day, pick up an axe, and kill another person in self-defense. To me that's absurd. I don't understand how she was totally exonerated. Really a good show, you guys! Really enjoyed it! Thanks!

Candy Montgomery should have been charged with manslaughter, at the very least. She might have initially stricken Betty with the axe in self defense, but then went full blind-rage mode and committed overkill. A crime was committed, and she should have paid. R.I.P. Betty. Great video, y'all.

No . Candy was fully entitled to kill Betty the moment Betty tried to kill her . The gruesome details are irrelevant . Betty needed to be stopped and it took whatever to make sure that pre meditated murderer was stopped ! Axe murders must be stopped anyway you can , if you can .

I really think that whenever she cheated on her husband that the thought of the sleazier motel was more enticing because she was missing excitement and dirty raw hot sex out of her own life so she wanted all of those aspects which is why she wanted to have an affair to start with because it was the forbidden. I could see the lure in going for the Como motel specifically due to location and just being an hourly place that it would be unlikely to find either one of them at.

I am amazed how many different activities Candy took part in after killing her best friend so brutally. That's a sociopathic murderer right there. I wonder if Allan had not admitted to having the illicit affair, would Candy have surrendered?
Also, in the old videos/newsreels of the trial that you inserted here, was that Allan (Betty's husband) walking beside Candy or that is someone else?

    • @Our80sLife

I know, right?! It's such a wild story! If you read the book, Evidence of Love, there is a very detailed description of Candy's activities for that day. That's the resource we used for the timeline, as well as the description which led us to locate her home (which wasn't publicly available.) And that information came from the writers' interview with Candy herself! As for the video footage surrounding the trial, the man walking near Candy was Robert Udashen who was a member of her legal team.

I don't get how the jury could find her not guilty. 41 axe blows, she took a bath in the victim 's bathroom, after which she left a crying baby alone. She lied to the police when she was questionned. In fact the fact that she was sleeping with a married man while she was busy showing a respectful face in her community is even a proof that she has a corrupt morality. Even though that is not the point the jury should have known she was not trustworthy, and her claim it was self-defense is a big lie, like her whole life. She has the motives, the mean and she pleaded "guilty". How can they find her nqun guilty?

I saw the HBO miniseries recently. Despite the fact that I grew up in Plano, I had never heard of this story until now. We moved here in the summer of 1980, so I'm sure my parents were aware of it. I recognize many of these locations, including the Como and Continental. I live 5-10 minutes from each of those locations. I can't tell you how many times I have driven past the Como, and the former Continental and wondered "How are these places still in business?". What struck me, being familiar with the area, was how far Candy and Allen drove. I don't know how they managed it. Back then those areas were largely still farm land. I'm really not a fan of fetishizing true crime, but this caught my interest, and thank you for keeping a respectful distance from the houses. I'm wondering what the current owners think, with all of the new publicity the case has received.

Just out of curiosity, did you guys ever purchase or obtain the court records? I'm wondering how long the actual court case lasted because I could swear that I heard that it took 8 days. I would love to have a copy of those court records, this case absolutely fascinates me. I have a theory about gandy but I know it would not be a popular one here so I'm not going to speak it, all I can say is that a woman's mentality back in the '70s and early '80s was a lot different than today. I do believe it started as self defense (it seems like poor Betty had a lot of mental issues, probably undiagnosed bipolar, and who knows what the muscle relaxers and pain meds were doing to her.) If they went for first degree murder then it would be acquitted because she didn’t plan it. If she did she would’ve brought clothes, not used an axe or leave al that evidence there. A total of 41 times she felt she needed to swing the axe, even though Bettywas unarmed and at that stage in no way able to defend herself. I met her one time around 1988 to 1989 and she seemed like a nice and good woman to me.
I believe that it WAS self defense.

Yes! It's an absolutely beautiful home, which makes it all the more strange that she kept seeking happiness elsewhere when she already had such a seemingly great life. This story simply baffles us!
