It’s because most people in power are guilty of sexual abuse. They like being in control which is why they have the jobs that they do. That’s why every other crime is taken so seriously but sexual assault seems to be the one crime that the court system/cops push under the rug
Judges often request that testimonies or pieces of evidence not be shown to the jury if they can't be proven or were illegally obtained. I'm guessing the reason they were asked to not speak about the abuse was because there wasn't enough proof, and the jury could have unfairly acquitted them. I believe they were abused, though.
Probably because there was no evidence of sexual abuse. Honestly, if the cops believed their act so much that they didn't even suspect them at first, I think a lot of people easily believe their "act" on the stand when they talk about the alleged sexual abuse. I'm not saying there wasn't emotional abuse, but since they were caught on tape admitting to it, its just too convenient to use the "sexual abuse" card. I just don't trust these guys to tell the truth, so I'm not really buying it. They made up a really good alibi for the night of the murder, and they had plenty of time to come up with stories of sexual abuse before the trial so....yeah...I call their bullshit on it.
I really resent that they ask, Lyle I believe, if he tried to end the sex. It wasn't sex, it's RAPE. I was abused by my step father in a very similar manner to what the Menendez brothers endured, and my mother was complicit in it as well. When I finally told her that I was being raped daily by her husband she said that I was having sex with him. That's always stuck with me. It wasn't sex. It wasn't consensual, it was rape.

The AG for Cali was fed up from losing the OJ case. They were pretty determined from the jump on the second hearing to not allow the things that swayed the jurors in the first trail. Super messed up.
Absolutely abhorrent, especially considering sexual abuse can absolutely traumatize a child mentally, leaving them never the same. They could’ve had PTSD or a host of psychological disorders because of that, which personally I think could’ve been cause to have their charges dropped by reason of insanity. But I doubt the AG in that county was going to lose yet another high profile case so soon after OJ

I never believe when one parent says they didn't know the other was abusing their children, I figure purposeful naivete is permission. But, the fact that his own brother didn't know he was balding really challenges my thoughts about the power of fear-based insulation. Not in this case, she was a sick puppy, ex-beauty queen carrying on the grand traditions of physical humiliation and love thriftily measured out by the size of a child's latest trophy. Maybe in others.. Ya this is case has me see a lot of similarities to what I went through. The hair loss is a very significant point to me because I went through picking out all of my hair because of it. And honestly I feel like that’s not something you think to make up if it didn’t actually happen
My friend's younger brother was bedwetting at 10+, nobody molested him but their family was definitely dysfunctional. It doesn't only happen from being sexually abused. Hair loss at such a young age points to a serious hormone dysfunction which in turn can explain some mental symptoms like rage, for example (high levels of a certain type of testosterone cause hair loss in men).
I bet the mother knew how toxic her household was, and that her sons would seek revenge. She locked her door at night. She knew something. She slept in fear.

I agree completely! They admitted to killing their parents at both trials but they were horrifically abused. Had this happened in the 2010s or even now, the verdict would have been so different. I think they’ve served their time and they’ve proven to be good prisoners (if you research their life after the trial, they’ve actually done a lot of amazing things behind bars). They aren’t a danger to society and their own family wants them out. Let them free!!

I watched the first trial, and according to one of Kitty’s few close friends, Faith Goldsmith, Kitty literally wanted Lyle, who was just an infant, to stay with his grandmother full time and she would just visit with him twice a week. Friday en route to skiing and Sunday on the way back. ( Kitty and Jose had decided to take up skiing and would go regularly on over night weekend trips shortly after Lyle’s birth). So the grandmother would care for Lyle even when Kitty wasn't working. Kitty would often tell her sons she wished they were never born and they ruined her marriage. She even told Jose’s sister that she wished she didn’t have her sons or that she would have preferred to have girls. Kitty told her niece Diane that “ children drive a wedge between a husband and wife.” According to Lyle’s testimony, Kitty told him that she wanted to pursue a career and make her own money instead, but that Jose had given her an ultimatum “ stay home and raise my son” or leave. This along with the many testimonies of negligent behavior during the trial and I truly believe Kitty did not want to be a mother or care for her sons from the very beginning.
Just came to say the same things, Kitty most certainly didn’t want to be a mother and was not happy about being pregnant. And she made sure Lyle knew he ‘ruined her life’

@Moth I am actually a victim of human trafficking. I am an advocate for victims of abuse and have spoken at many conferences and events. I understand fully what it is like to be a victim and I am very hurt and still healing. But I cannot use my history of abuse and unfathomable torture as a reason to hurt my abusers. I have wanted to hurt myself and have and wanted to hurt others before out of pain and I was immediately institutionalized where I belonged. Where I learned to cope and manage my emotions. Some of my tormentors were never caught and sometimes I just feel pressure inside where I want nothing more than to hurt someone I know who may know information. I even thought about how I would do if. But those moments I’m weak I confide in help. I have called the police on myself before. It’s not hard. It’s not easy either. But if we all just snapped based off emotions we wouldn’t have the judicial system.
The fact that their cousin testified that one of them confessed to her that he was being abused back when they were still kids makes me believe it. Do I think it was self defense? No. I think it was revenge.
It was IMPERFECT self defense. They had a genuine fear for their lives but they weren’t actually in danger at the time. They just thought they were which they had a perfectly good reason to believe since they had threatened to expose Jose to the world ab the sick things he had been doing to his son for 12 years. U speak as if they killed their parents because they were being abused which is NOT true. They killed them because they were in fear for their lives.
It reeks of revenge killing to me too. Even if the abuse is true, it doesn't just mean we can just go around murdering people. People are comparing this to the Gypsy Rose case, and the two are nothing alike. We have proof of her mother's abuse and evidence that she physically could not get away from her mother, as well as her mother's actions physically putting her in danger on a continuous basis. Nothing about this reads like they were doing this in self defense. They were grown and I'm not even sure if they were living in the house.

Maybe for Eric it was self defense considering his abuse seemed to be ongoing. But Lyle seemed to be out of the house and on his own as an adult based on what it sounds like (while still receiving his parents' money but still). There is absolutely no way you can pin Lyle's actions as self defense.

There's a reason why the women in the jury wanted to acquit and all the men wanted to convict. Women already know what's it like being harassed on a daily basis, and will have experienced assault much more than the men. The women believed the brothers.

@@Sshazex i think they probably don’t say anything because it’s traumatizing,, especially for men being abused by other men. being sexually abused by someone who’s not your sexual preference turns those men into murderers because they can’t handle it. it’s incredibly sad that so many of them get assaulted and they just live with it. it’s definitely more than embarrassment. it’s something you can’t even comprehend if you haven’t experienced yourself. if someone you know tells you that they’ve been assaulted it’s not because they aren’t bothered by it, it’s probably because it’s eating away at them. if they tell their close friend then they share the pain they felt and don’t have to carry that knowledge on their own. some people only have to tell one person to feel better and some people need therapy. but what you could do to help is just listen to them. i would gladly take on that burden if it meant their pain lessened a little.

I don’t care what their race is I don’t believe their innocent. I do think they had shitty parents a father who emotionally abused his kids with unrealistically high standards, being emotionally cold to them and enabling their bad behavior by paying people to keep quite about their crimes or keep their jobs and a mother who sat by and let it happen but I don’t think this justified murder especially when there are people out there with far worse parents who didn’t turn to murder. If they were sexually abused why didn’t they ever bring this up? They never told police and they even had a councilor who one of the brothers even confessed the murder to and still failed to mention being sexually abused. This “sexual abuse” didn’t get brought up until the two brothers realized they had a chance of going to prison and either getting the death penalty or spending life in prison seems very convenient to me like their lying (which they had a habit of doing by the way) to gain sympathy & get a lesser sentence or absolved of their crime. If the family members thought they were being abused why didn’t they ever do anything about it or bring it up? These two belong in prison for life in my opinion as for these two being any worse or better than Casey Anthony I don’t know but I agree that Casey Anthony should also be rotting in prison for the rest of her life.
As someone who’s been sexually abused, the way the brothers talk about the abuse, the way they cry is so real and raw. I feel so bad for them :/ they deserve justice.
that's how I felt, after it was mentioned that the mom said they were sociopaths I doubted them but as soon as I heard him break down while describing the sexual abuse... there's no way that was anything other than a traumatic recollection. I can't believe they were allowed to silence them on the abuse, literally their entire defence! Of course an unbiased jury would find them guilty without that. So upsetting
They seem pretty capable of faking emotion. But the way they talk about it definitely seems like it’s true. “When I told her she said stop you’re exaggerating”
I think what stands out to me the most is the loyalty and camaraderie they still feel for one another. Usually cold blooded murderers would rat each other out, throw each other under the bus and feel nothing about it. These two definitely seem super close because they lived through a shared trauma. I’m not sure that absolves them from consequences for what they did but it sure makes me feel for them a little bit.
the hair loss (most likely a result of traumatic alopecia) and bed wetting were clear signs that they were absolutely being abused. the fact that they weren't allowed to talk about the abuse at the second trial is sickening - it's such a big part of the case, why was it just being looked over? murder might not have been the right thing to do, but life is prison was extremely too harsh.
So many people seem to have anecdotal stories about 10yrold + bedwetters that come from "absolutely healthy homes without abuse" but, I feel that the more we learn about the true purpose and importance of sleep the more people will have to examine these "idyllic" upbringings. Sleep rinses out the trash, repeats important physical activity and memories and heals or hides all the injury it can. Just because a child isn't being hit doesn't mean they aren't being harmed.
@@maebandy yea I was a bed wetter to about 11 and wasn’t abused but witness a lot of domestic violence (father almost dying) that lead me to continue wetting the bed. My youngest sister in law stopped wetting the bed at 3 and picked it up again at age 5/6 when my parents in law divorced. Doesn’t always have to be abuse but it’s can DEFINITELY be a sign of trauma.

Not mine though, my mom made it very clear mine was from laziness. My "laziness" didn't get cured until after I moved in with my best friend's parents in highschool.
A friendly reminder, they told about the abuse and bed wetting after they were consulted with their defense team. Many people use this as a defense line. This doesn’t make this true and it doesn’t excuse anyone from murder. Y’all should touch some grass.
this case sickened me, my heart dropped when i heard Lesley said "Eric told me, i felt like i made a huge mistake and i asked him. what mistake eric? and he said to me, i should've killed myself not my parents." when i tell you i sobbed.
Remember that after the murder, they left to go buy movie tickets (for their alibi) and then came back. Their reaction wasn't directly after they committed the crime, which makes me think it wasn't "pure shock"

I had to stop listening at the four minute 4:09 bc kitty did NOT want to be a mom. She wanted to be a server in New York. But the husband forced her to keep the baby and to become a stay at home mom and to move with him. If she can’t get that correct … that sets up how the children would be treated they were not kind loving parents

@@TruecrimerSalad, the crying could have been sincere. The amount of emotion a victim of abuse can feel towards their abuser (especially when it's a parent) is almost unbelievable. The amount of guilt, relief, grief, and so many other emotions they would have been feeling could explain their reactions during the call and when police arrived.

They look content in their mugshots, I'm pretty sure that even in prison they have a better life than when they were growing up at home, which says so much.
When they were united after years, they just hugged each other in silence. They lost someone who always got their back, their backbone and hearing about them being together again is heartwarming. They did wrong thing murdering their parents but at least they are now back together

The history of abuse ought to have mitigated the sentence eg 25 to life with the possibility of parole. And it was not fair that the abuse was largely omitted from the second trial. How is that justice?

As someone who grew up in a household that was extremely similar, not class wise, but nonetheless the same idea of total and utter success under any means necessary and parents taking advantage of their kids in any way possible, their motive was completely understandable. It’s hard to think you can escape shitty parents ESPECIALLY when one has extremely influential. They absolutely developed skills that would not work in the normal world, and it is really sad to see that the kids never were believed about their abuse.
I believe them. The way they moved when they were talking about it, it was so telling. I work in mental health and that didn't look remotely faked. I'm not saying killing anyone was excusable, but I don't believe they were lying.
Their 911 call didn't seem fake either. When police pulled up they was falling out in the front yard pouring tears, screaming. But that was an act too. Idk that's what makes me feel like they lie alot

Killing their own parents no matter how shitty that (allegedly) were to them,would probably still have affected them way more than they (the brothers) thought it would. Some of that can even be inferred from the fact Eric couldn't shoot his mom initially and how it was weighing on Eric enough that that he confessed twice to people he trusted and normally looked to for help and support

It’s hard to say if they’re victims or killers because no matter what no matter how abused you are physically or mentally don’t mean you result to killing them . Very few people do so . If I was them I would’ve just moved they were over 18 by that time so why couldn’t they just leave and build a new life away from there parents .
In my opinion there’s always a way out that doesn’t result in murder . They didn’t half to kill the parents but that’s what they resulted in. They had some type of mental disorder before this happened because no normal person just does this .
they comitted murder, probably they deserved to be in prision a little but life sentence without the possibility of parole? please there was evidence of child pornography taken by jose, kitty's notes, the signs of sexual abuse they had, there were witnesses, even their own testimonies, also the way they killed them, it shows all the resentment and fear they felt for them, I don't think if it was for the money they would have done it that way...just set them free already
The sad part is, at this point they will probably fare better in prison. They went into prison practically as boys. We all know the prison system is not set up for rehabilitation and after decades of being institutionalized, and never actually really knowing "adulthood" outside of prison walls, they would have an insane amount of difficulties trying to adjust to being free. It's a shame that those poor boys had to endure such trauma. Their whole lives were stolen from them.
I mean, I find it interesting that gen Z’s are on their side, at the time when this was all over the news during those few months, no one supported them except their legal team and those few family members, like the grandmother who still thought a mob or mafia did it after even the proof from the therapy Dr. which makes me go on to believe, the grandmother was just in denial, even after proof presented to her. And she was their primary supporter in the family. Not to mention these boys lied so well, that the officers didn’t test them for gunshot residue when they showed up to the crime scene, they acted it out so well, the officers felt bad for them and actually thought it was a mob. If their that good at lying, goes to show how they could have easily manipulated everyone and made this story up incase they got caught. Which is why they’re ere charged guilty, they lied so many times even in court that those accusations they made were very hard to believe. Sure, I believe there’s truth to what they said, considering their own cousin proved it right. But still, they would have had a much better chance if they didn’t go full pathological liars, or even start spending money right after the funeral. Those are all major red flags. So I can understand why the jury took 1 month to decide, takes most jury’s a few hours in most cases, but this was more complex. And then getting married to different women in jail? Seems fishy, are they sure those women just weren’t after their money which they never got to fully spend? I mean, what better place to find a shugar dad, then in jail, while they are locked away for life, while you spend their money and do your own thing on the outside.
I also think the way they killed them says a lot, if they really had planned it out and just wanted to kill them for money surely they would have only shot them each once maybe twice to be sure but the fact they shot them so many times to me, shows the frustration and anger they were getting out on them. You don't shoot someone THAT MANY times unless you really hate them and are genuinely traumatised from abuse.
also, surely they would have waited to be able to get a handgun with a silencer or whatever rather than shotguns? the fact they didnt want to wait for the store to have handguns shows they felt like their lives were in immediate danger tbh
these are all good points - plus their recollections of the abuse (instead of the crocodile tears of Jodi Arias for example) tell me their father was guilty and mom wasn't much better by protecting his actions.

I watch a body language channel and he says when you feel emotional when someone else cries it tends to mean its a genuine emotion. So i do 100% believe their parents did abuse them & they should serve time but i think its time they were free. Such a sad case

If they were lying about the abuse then they each deserve an Emmy. Of course they were abused. It was a crime of passion. I don’t believe they would be a danger to society if free. They probably deserve prison time for committing murder but they don’t deserve life in prison. I’ve personally seen parents that beat their child to death get 10-15 years. The abuse should have been taken into consideration for sentencing. Unfortunately, I believe the abuse wasn’t enough to get a lesser sentence because they were rich and considered privileged.
Yeah, a lot of people tend to believe that rich=happy. They were born in a rich family, they HAVE to be happy, there's no possible way they were abused, or stressed or nothing bad could have happened to them
There is also a continued belief that boys/men cannot be raped and in the 1980s and 1990s, that idea was more prevalent so people were probably way less likely to take it seriously

This case eats me up because on one hand being abused as severely as they were it "immediate danger" takes on a new meaning. Abusers are like shadows, following your every waking moment even when they're not around. It can be near impossible to break free from their grasps- just think of all the battered spouses who have had to uproot their lives and change their identities to escape. And that's WITHOUT the added factors of being wealthy parents with many resources. It's not hard to imagine why they would view their parents deaths as the only escape. On the other hand they premeditated a murder and that shouldn't go unpunished. These two shouldn't have been given such a severe sentence and this is a good example of how our justice system is far removed from being reformatorym
@@TejubescDM their family members knew about it. They did a reenactment with a mini series on their case and they included other family members being aware of abuse. Lots of women don’t report their abusers (especially parents) but because they are men you don’t believe them

Agreed. These boys were absolutely not sociopaths or vicious. I can recognize sincerity, and trauma. This reaction is 100% rooted in trauma. Between the hair loss at FOURTEEN, bed wetting until 14, the tears, the awfulness of having to say the words out loud... just all of it. Nobody can give this level of description and detail, with a straight face, that much emotion, and keep their stories straight, unless they're telling the truth.

The way the bodies of the parents are described makes me feel like it was a rage killing, for sure. If it were just about money, I don't feel like it would have been so horrific. I think there was some SERIOUS rage and trauma coming through in the way they killed both of their parents, and I think that speaks to the abuse they both claim to have suffered.
Also, if it was just for money they wouldn’t be hysterically emotional with guilt. Guilt wouldn’t have been a factor. Bc those who chase materialistic life, do not see anything but the prize.
A member of Menudo said their dad raped him when he was a teen (I guess he was involved in their group management). Whether or not he did, they’ve served enough time. We at the very least know he brutally abused them physically so it’s time to let them out of prison.
Yeah I agree that didn’t seem very off to me. I know when I’m depressed I end up doing a lot of online shopping to make me feel better. Having something new provides a bit of temporary happiness so I could see people buying a lot after the death of a parent.
I didn't like how they pointed out they were grieving "wrong", there is no wrong way to grieve. When my grandmother passed away I went out and bought myself a switch, a few games, and other "nicer" things. It's not near the same price but to them, that much stuff isn't a lot for them since they grew up with money.
I think one thing to counter this argument would be that they went and got a computer hacker to get rid of Josés will that most likely had the most up to date version which did not include a lot of money for the brothers. Therefore your able to suspect that they did it for money as well.
every time i hear about this i think of the song 7 rings. that’s a clear example of someone spending excess money and flaunting as a coping mechanism. it’s really not that uncommon so i don’t see how people associate that with guilt. some deal with trauma by binge eating or having casual sex. some turn to drugs and alcohol and some spend money.
When I had a miscarriage, I went on a massive spending spree. I bought a lot of plants and garden-related items. Might not seem like much, but I’d spent hundreds of pounds on just that, plants. Shopping sprees is such a common way to grieve, I’m honestly unsure why they’d say the grieving was weird.
The money is a common misconception about this case. Their spending after the murders was the same as it was before. Lyle said so himself that even though the purchases were excessive, it wasn’t anything new. They just continued their spending habits. They-and all the other family members-spent huge amounts of money all the time. Erik also confirmed this by saying that that was how their mum coped with depression, and Lyle just followed suit. This was a wealthy family after all.
@@MindyBeee One of the few things the parents did NOT do was NOT give them money. They were never financially deprived at any point. Image was very important to José, so cutting them off would reflect poorly on him.
But he wanted a Porsche and his dad wouldn’t let him get one. He immediately got one after he was dead. He bought a business and Eric got private tennis lessons I don’t believe his dad would have let them do this.
My mother is abusive and this trial really spooked her out. She started going around town telling everyone she was afraid that I would kill her... but nobody ever questioned why she thought that. It really was a different time where parental abuse was a "family problem" that others didn't involve themselves in.

This is my mom!! She watches documentaries like this where kids murder their parents due to their toxic, strict and abusive behaviors. And my mother is all three ... I told her why do you think like that ? The most I’ll do is rebel.
As a young man who was raped by a biological family member, I would say that I would believe their story. I know how it feels for people to disregard your story just because you're a man. And years of abuse like that can and will push you over the edge the more the truth is oppressed. Jose was obssessed with control over them. Its the same plot, different story everytime.

Possibly yes. I think the boys were Possibly coached to add more to their story because after the court sessions they would apparently high five each other and said how great they did. I personally would be just exhausted and quiet or somber. I have been ra*** and SA as a child and younger adult. I cannot relate to these responses... but definitely I can to the trigger words

As another child who was abused when they were younger, I agree. It's understandable that you would have rage and other complex feelings you might have towards them due to the fact that they're your parents. That being said, I don't think that justify killing them.

The fact that their family members, the people closest to them AND their parents, still support them says it all. I wholeheartedly believe that they were abused by their parents, and I do think that killing them was their only way out. As someone who's grown up in a household where life and death go hand in hand (family used to work with rescues and I've had to deal with a lot of death over the years, even if we don't as much), and someone who has been molested when I was 11, I don't think them killing was out of line. When you're raped, you die every time you remember or think about it. You lose such an integral part of your life, you feel tainted, unloved, you're afraid to be touched, you're afraid of anyone getting close to you in that way, and with all the other abuse they'd been through, close in ANY way. The parents had it coming. They put those boys through Hell for 12 YEARS. 12. You, Menendez parents, killed those boys over, and over, and over, in so many ways, and then expected them to live like normal. You shamed them for something they couldn't control. You made them want to DIE just by being in the room.

Not to mention, you are reading into that picture what the killers said in their defense. There are all sorts of pictures in families that look odd or awkward. Possibly even sexual but it isn’t actually the case. Again, if you look at Lyle’s hand, he is NOT grabbing his father’s hand to remove it. He could have been slipping off his father’s lap and Jose was just trying to steady him. In any case, IF Lyle and/or Erik were being sexually abused by dad, why would Jose allow this picture to exist? As a side note, Erik also claimed his mother sexually abused him. We have all heard of two people together committing horrid acts but in this case, Erik spoke of two parents individually sexually abusing them without the other parent’s participation. Now what do you think the odds are of both parents individually sexually abusing their two sons? Ultimately, no one ever claimed this “sexual abuse” existed prior to the trial. No one, ever. Why didn’t Erik, while confessing to Dr. Oziel about murdering his parents? Seems like that would be part of his confession. Especially since he went to the counselor because he was guilt ridden. I would think offering up an explanation would be vital. Wonder why? They certainly didn’t claim this while their father was alive to refute their claims.
And one of the rare cases in which their money and status didn't give them sympathy. Yes they had money, but were sexually, physically, and mentally abused and thats so fucked up and damaging.

It’s because most people in power are guilty of sexual abuse. They like being in control which is why they have the jobs that they do. That’s why every other crime is taken so seriously but sexual assault seems to be the one crime that the court system/cops push under the rug
Judges often request that testimonies or pieces of evidence not be shown to the jury if they can't be proven or were illegally obtained.
I'm guessing the reason they were asked to not speak about the abuse was because there wasn't enough proof, and the jury could have unfairly acquitted them. I believe they were abused, though.
Probably because there was no evidence of sexual abuse. Honestly, if the cops believed their act so much that they didn't even suspect them at first, I think a lot of people easily believe their "act" on the stand when they talk about the alleged sexual abuse. I'm not saying there wasn't emotional abuse, but since they were caught on tape admitting to it, its just too convenient to use the "sexual abuse" card. I just don't trust these guys to tell the truth, so I'm not really buying it. They made up a really good alibi for the night of the murder, and they had plenty of time to come up with stories of sexual abuse before the trial so....yeah...I call their bullshit on it.
I really resent that they ask, Lyle I believe, if he tried to end the sex. It wasn't sex, it's RAPE. I was abused by my step father in a very similar manner to what the Menendez brothers endured, and my mother was complicit in it as well. When I finally told her that I was being raped daily by her husband she said that I was having sex with him. That's always stuck with me. It wasn't sex. It wasn't consensual, it was rape.

My friend's younger brother was bedwetting at 10+, nobody molested him but their family was definitely dysfunctional. It doesn't only happen from being sexually abused. Hair loss at such a young age points to a serious hormone dysfunction which in turn can explain some mental symptoms like rage, for example (high levels of a certain type of testosterone cause hair loss in men).

I agree completely! They admitted to killing their parents at both trials but they were horrifically abused. Had this happened in the 2010s or even now, the verdict would have been so different. I think they’ve served their time and they’ve proven to be good prisoners (if you research their life after the trial, they’ve actually done a lot of amazing things behind bars). They aren’t a danger to society and their own family wants them out. Let them free!!

I watched the first trial, and according to one of Kitty’s few close friends, Faith Goldsmith, Kitty literally wanted Lyle, who was just an infant, to stay with his grandmother full time and she would just visit with him twice a week. Friday en route to skiing and Sunday on the way back. ( Kitty and Jose had decided to take up skiing and would go regularly on over night weekend trips shortly after Lyle’s birth). So the grandmother would care for Lyle even when Kitty wasn't working. Kitty would often tell her sons she wished they were never born and they ruined her marriage. She even told Jose’s sister that she wished she didn’t have her sons or that she would have preferred to have girls. Kitty told her niece Diane that “ children drive a wedge between a husband and wife.” According to Lyle’s testimony, Kitty told him that she wanted to pursue a career and make her own money instead, but that Jose had given her an ultimatum “ stay home and raise my son” or leave. This along with the many testimonies of negligent behavior during the trial and I truly believe Kitty did not want to be a mother or care for her sons from the very beginning.

@Moth I am actually a victim of human trafficking. I am an advocate for victims of abuse and have spoken at many conferences and events. I understand fully what it is like to be a victim and I am very hurt and still healing. But I cannot use my history of abuse and unfathomable torture as a reason to hurt my abusers. I have wanted to hurt myself and have and wanted to hurt others before out of pain and I was immediately institutionalized where I belonged. Where I learned to cope and manage my emotions. Some of my tormentors were never caught and sometimes I just feel pressure inside where I want nothing more than to hurt someone I know who may know information. I even thought about how I would do if. But those moments I’m weak I confide in help. I have called the police on myself before. It’s not hard. It’s not easy either. But if we all just snapped based off emotions we wouldn’t have the judicial system.

The fact that their cousin testified that one of them confessed to her that he was being abused back when they were still kids makes me believe it. Do I think it was self defense? No. I think it was revenge.
It was IMPERFECT self defense. They had a genuine fear for their lives but they weren’t actually in danger at the time. It reeks of revenge killing to me too. Even if the abuse is true, it doesn't just mean we can just go around murdering people. People are comparing this to the Gypsy Rose case, and the two are nothing alike. We have proof of her mother's abuse and evidence that she physically could not get away from her mother, as well as her mother's actions physically putting her in danger on a continuous basis. Nothing about this reads like they were doing this in self defense. They were grown and I'm not even sure if they were living in the house.

@@Sshazex i think they probably don’t say anything because it’s traumatizing,, especially for men being abused by other men. being sexually abused by someone who’s not your sexual preference turns those men into murderers because they can’t handle it. it’s incredibly sad that so many of them get assaulted and they just live with it. it’s definitely more than embarrassment. it’s something you can’t even comprehend if you haven’t experienced yourself. if someone you know tells you that they’ve been assaulted it’s not because they aren’t bothered by it, it’s probably because it’s eating away at them. if they tell their close friend then they share the pain they felt and don’t have to carry that knowledge on their own. some people only have to tell one person to feel better and some people need therapy. but what you could do to help is just listen to them. i would gladly take on that burden if it meant their pain lessened a little.

I don’t care what their race is I don’t believe their innocent. I do think they had shitty parents a father who emotionally abused his kids with unrealistically high standards, being emotionally cold to them and enabling their bad behavior by paying people to keep quite about their crimes or keep their jobs and a mother who sat by and let it happen but I don’t think this justified murder especially when there are people out there with far worse parents who didn’t turn to murder.
If they were sexually abused why didn’t they ever bring this up? They never told police and they even had a councilor who one of the brothers even confessed the murder to and still failed to mention being sexually abused. This “sexual abuse” didn’t get brought up until the two brothers realized they had a chance of going to prison and either getting the death penalty or spending life in prison seems very convenient to me like their lying (which they had a habit of doing by the way) to gain sympathy & get a lesser sentence or absolved of their crime. If the family members thought they were being abused why didn’t they ever do anything about it or bring it up?

Usually cold blooded murderers would rat each other out, throw each other under the bus and feel nothing about it. These two definitely seem super close because they lived through a shared trauma. I’m not sure that absolves them from consequences for what they did but it sure makes me feel for them a little bit.
the hair loss (most likely a result of traumatic alopecia) and bed wetting were clear signs that they were absolutely being abused. the fact that they weren't allowed to talk about the abuse at the second trial is sickening - it's such a big part of the case, why was it just being looked over? murder might not have been the right thing to do, but life is prison was extremely too harsh.

So many people seem to have anecdotal stories about 10yrold + bedwetters that come from "absolutely healthy homes without abuse" but, I feel that the more we learn about the true purpose and importance of sleep the more people will have to examine these "idyllic" upbringings. Sleep rinses out the trash, repeats important physical activity and memories and heals or hides all the injury it can. Just because a child isn't being hit doesn't mean they aren't being harmed.
@@maebandy yea I was a bed wetter to about 11 and wasn’t abused but witness a lot of domestic violence (father almost dying) that lead me to continue wetting the bed. My youngest sister in law stopped wetting the bed at 3 and picked it up again at age 5/6 when my parents in law divorced. Doesn’t always have to be abuse but it’s can DEFINITELY be a sign of trauma.

Not mine though, my mom made it very clear mine was from laziness. My "laziness" didn't get cured until after I moved in with my best friend's parents in highschool.
A friendly reminder, they told about the abuse and bed wetting after they were consulted with their defense team. Many people use this as a defense line. This doesn’t make this true and it doesn’t excuse anyone from murder. Y’all should touch some grass.

I had to stop listening at the four minute 4:09 bc kitty did NOT want to be a mom. She wanted to be a server in New York. But the husband forced her to keep the baby and to become a stay at home mom and to move with him.
If she can’t get that correct … that sets up how the children would be treated they were not kind loving parents

The amount of guilt, relief, grief, and so many other emotions they would have been feeling could explain their reactions during the call and when police arrived.

They look content in their mugshots, I'm pretty sure that even in prison they have a better life than when they were growing up at home, which says so much.
When they were united after years, they just hugged each other in silence. They lost someone who always got their back, their backbone and hearing about them being together again is heartwarming. They did wrong thing murdering their parents but at least they are now back together

As someone who grew up in a household that was extremely similar, not class wise, but nonetheless the same idea of total and utter success under any means necessary and parents taking advantage of their kids in any way possible, their motive was completely understandable. It’s hard to think you can escape shitty parents ESPECIALLY when one has extremely influential. They absolutely developed skills that would not work in the normal world, and it is really sad to see that the kids never were believed about their abuse.
I believe them. The way they moved when they were talking about it, it was so telling. I work in mental health and that didn't look remotely faked. I'm not saying killing anyone was excusable, but I don't believe they were lying.
Their 911 call didn't seem fake either. When police pulled up they was falling out in the front yard pouring tears, screaming. But that was an act too. Idk that's what makes me feel like they lie alot

Killing their own parents no matter how shitty that (allegedly) were to them,would probably still have affected them way more than they (the brothers) thought it would. Some of that can even be inferred from the fact Eric couldn't shoot his mom initially and how it was weighing on Eric enough that that he confessed twice to people he trusted and normally looked to for help and support

The sad part is, at this point they will probably fare better in prison. They went into prison practically as boys. We all know the prison system is not set up for rehabilitation and after decades of being institutionalized, and never actually really knowing "adulthood" outside of prison walls, they would have an insane amount of difficulties trying to adjust to being free. It's a shame that those poor boys had to endure such trauma. Their whole lives were stolen from them.

I mean, I find it interesting that gen Z’s are on their side, at the time when this was all over the news during those few months, no one supported them except their legal team and those few family members, like the grandmother who still thought a mob or mafia did it after even the proof from the therapy Dr. which makes me go on to believe, the grandmother was just in denial, even after proof presented to her. And she was their primary supporter in the family. Not to mention these boys lied so well, that the officers didn’t test them for gunshot residue when they showed up to the crime scene, they acted it out so well, the officers felt bad for them and actually thought it was a mob. If their that good at lying, goes to show how they could have easily manipulated everyone and made this story up incase they got caught. Which is why they’re ere charged guilty, they lied so many times even in court that those accusations they made were very hard to believe. Sure, I believe there’s truth to what they said, considering their own cousin proved it right. But still, they would have had a much better chance if they didn’t go full pathological liars, or even start spending money right after the funeral. Those are all major red flags. So I can understand why the jury took 1 month to decide, takes most jury’s a few hours in most cases, but this was more complex. And then getting married to different women in jail? Seems fishy, are they sure those women just weren’t after their money which they never got to fully spend? I mean, what better place to find a shugar dad, then in jail, while they are locked away for life, while you spend their money and do your own thing on the outside.
I also think the way they killed them says a lot, if they really had planned it out and just wanted to kill them for money surely they would have only shot them each once maybe twice to be sure but the fact they shot them so many times to me, shows the frustration and anger they were getting out on them. You don't shoot someone THAT MANY times unless you really hate them and are genuinely traumatised from abuse.

If they were lying about the abuse then they each deserve an Emmy. Of course they were abused. It was a crime of passion. I don’t believe they would be a danger to society if free. They probably deserve prison time for committing murder but they don’t deserve life in prison. I’ve personally seen parents that beat their child to death get 10-15 years. The abuse should have been taken into consideration for sentencing. Unfortunately, I believe the abuse wasn’t enough to get a lesser sentence because they were rich and considered privileged.

This case eats me up because on one hand being abused as severely as they were it "immediate danger" takes on a new meaning. Abusers are like shadows, following your every waking moment even when they're not around. It can be near impossible to break free from their grasps- just think of all the battered spouses who have had to uproot their lives and change their identities to escape. And that's WITHOUT the added factors of being wealthy parents with many resources. It's not hard to imagine why they would view their parents deaths as the only escape.
On the other hand they premeditated a murder and that shouldn't go unpunished.
These two shouldn't have been given such a severe sentence and this is a good example of how our justice system is far removed from being reformatorym

Agreed. These boys were absolutely not sociopaths or vicious. I can recognize sincerity, and trauma. This reaction is 100% rooted in trauma. Between the hair loss at FOURTEEN, bed wetting until 14, the tears, the awfulness of having to say the words out loud... just all of it. Nobody can give this level of description and detail, with a straight face, that much emotion, and keep their stories straight, unless they're telling the truth.

The way the bodies of the parents are described makes me feel like it was a rage killing, for sure. If it were just about money, I don't feel like it would have been so horrific. I think there was some SERIOUS rage and trauma coming through in the way they killed both of their parents, and I think that speaks to the abuse they both claim to have suffered.

I didn't like how they pointed out they were grieving "wrong", there is no wrong way to grieve. When my grandmother passed away I went out and bought myself a switch, a few games, and other "nicer" things. It's not near the same price but to them, that much stuff isn't a lot for them since they grew up with money.

I think one thing to counter this argument would be that they went and got a computer hacker to get rid of Josés will that most likely had the most up to date version which did not include a lot of money for the brothers. Therefore your able to suspect that they did it for money as well.
every time i hear about this i think of the song 7 rings. that’s a clear example of someone spending excess money and flaunting as a coping mechanism. it’s really not that uncommon so i don’t see how people associate that with guilt. some deal with trauma by binge eating or having casual sex. some turn to drugs and alcohol and some spend money.
Plus, it was probably a last fuck you to their abuser (or at least it feels like one).
When I had a miscarriage, I went on a massive spending spree. I bought a lot of plants and garden-related items. Might not seem like much, but I’d spent hundreds of pounds on just that, plants.
Shopping sprees is such a common way to grieve, I’m honestly unsure why they’d say the grieving was weird.
The money is a common misconception about this case. Their spending after the murders was the same as it was before. Lyle said so himself that even though the purchases were excessive, it wasn’t anything new. They just continued their spending habits. They-and all the other family members-spent huge amounts of money all the time. Erik also confirmed this by saying that that was how their mum coped with depression, and Lyle just followed suit. This was a wealthy family after all.
Also, they finally had financial freedom.

But he wanted a Porsche and his dad wouldn’t let him get one. He immediately got one after he was dead. He bought a business and Eric got private tennis lessons I don’t believe his dad would have let them do this.

My mother is abusive and this trial really spooked her out. She started going around town telling everyone she was afraid that I would kill her... but nobody ever questioned why she thought that. It really was a different time where parental abuse was a "family problem" that others didn't involve themselves in.

As a young man who was raped by a biological family member, I would say that I would believe their story. I know how it feels for people to disregard your story just because you're a man. And years of abuse like that can and will push you over the edge the more the truth is oppressed. Jose was obssessed with control over them. Its the same plot, different story everytime.

I don’t like the fact that the judge didn’t allow the sexual abuse to be spoken about in the second trial. If it’s true, that changes everything
it is true, there's photos of erik when he was 6 naked. you can't see his face but there are specific freckles that match it to erik

The abuse was and is never proven. That's the problem with this case. It's their word. And since they did pre meditated murder and lied about it after, that meant nobody could believe them anymore. Is it fair, no. Is it 100% their own fault. Yes
as a child who was severely abused by my father in many ways, i understand the anger they have for their father. im not saying i would kill my father but i have wished that he wasnt around anymore. i am no way excusing murder, but i believe they were victims.

As another child who was abused when they were younger, I agree. It's understandable that you would have rage and other complex feelings you might have towards them due to the fact that they're your parents. That being said, I don't think that justify killing them.

I hate that people made fun of them for being abused. It’s sad. I felt bad for them when I saw their case on Hulu. People say they could of just left. Don’t understand the trauma of abuse and how it effects you. They knew their dad was a powerful man running wouldn’t of been a huge option for them.
Right, it’s awful. I hate to say it but if they were two girls instead..I bet this would have ended very differently. No one would have made fun of them for sexual abuse and they probably would have been believed more so then the boys were.
I mean what they did wasn’t right, but if it’s true, that the father sexually abused them, that’s traumatizing. Sexual abuse is usually never without consequence. Victims either end up committing suicide, turning to drugs, or becoming abusers themselves later on. Or in some cases, turning to murder in severe cases. I have no sympathy for parents who abuse their own children. It’s sick.

People made fun of them for lying about the abuse. That lie came out when they knew they were going to get a hefty sentence. Those two changed their stories so many times I'd rather believe Chris Watts than them.

If these kids really were abused, they werent killers they just needed a way out, and murdering your parents when your not a sociopath, yeah your probably gonna be hysterical. The fact that their family members, the people closest to them AND their parents, still support them says it all. I wholeheartedly believe that they were abused by their parents, and I do think that killing them was their only way out. Everyone always says "well if things were truly as bad as they claim, why didn't they just leave?", without taking into consideration that their parents were MULTI MILLIONAIRES. They had power and connections, and they cared about their public image above all else. Do you really think such people would just let their kids leave knowing damn well that they could expose them at any time? Absolutely not!
Plus the abuse started when they were only 6, in Erik's case even earlier. I don't think when they were in their teens they were rlly "old enough" to leave. Erik's psychiatrist also stated that he has the mental age of an 8-10 year old - at age 18

@A D okay 1) Erik ran away but the dad found him, took him bck, put a knife up to his neck and threatened to kill him if he did it again. 2) who would you believe ranging from 1968-1991 when everyone thought that men couldn’t be sexually abused, plus the added bonus that the parents were rich. but yeah they shouldn’t of killed there parents that was a bad idea- but I get why they did it tho. not that I’m saying it was the right decision, but if u look at it from their point of view it seemed like the on escape.

As someone who's grown up in a household where life and death go hand in hand (family used to work with rescues and I've had to deal with a lot of death over the years, even if we don't as much), and someone who has been molested when I was 11, I don't think them killing was out of line.
When you're raped, you die every time you remember or think about it. You lose such an integral part of your life, you feel tainted, unloved, you're afraid to be touched, you're afraid of anyone getting close to you in that way, and with all the other abuse they'd been through, close in ANY way.
The parents had it coming. They put those boys through Hell for 12 YEARS. 12. You, Menendez parents, killed those boys over, and over, and over, in so many ways, and then expected them to live like normal. You shamed them for something they couldn't control. You made them want to DIE just by being in the room.

Me too. I thought it was a story until I saw the picture of the boys on Jose's lap and where Jose's hand was on Lyle. It looked like Lyle was trying to take his dad's hand away when the picture was snapped.
@@roxannemoser To me, you are reading things into that picture. The boy’s facial expressions do not show fear or discomfort. Not to mention, you are reading into that picture what the killers said in their defense. There are all sorts of pictures in families that look odd or awkward. Possibly even sexual but it isn’t actually the case. Again, if you look at Lyle’s hand, he is NOT grabbing his father’s hand to remove it. He could have been slipping off his father’s lap and Jose was just trying to steady him. In any case, IF Lyle and/or Erik were being sexually abused by dad, why would Jose allow this picture to exist?
As a side note, Erik also claimed his mother sexually abused him. We have all heard of two people together committing horrid acts but in this case, Erik spoke of two parents individually sexually abusing them without the other parent’s participation. Now what do you think the odds are of both parents individually sexually abusing their two sons?
Ultimately, no one ever claimed this “sexual abuse” existed prior to the trial. No one, ever. Why didn’t Erik, while confessing to Dr. Oziel about murdering his parents? Seems like that would be part of his confession. Especially since he went to the counselor because he was guilt ridden. I would think offering up an explanation would be vital. Wonder why?
They certainly didn’t claim this while their father was alive to refute their claims.

Their own RELATIVES knew what was going on. If they were lying, those relatives would agree with where they are. Multiple relatives got on the stand to give their testimony FOR A REASON.
