It’s insane that her reasoning was “if I shot my kids why would I let myself get caught?” And not “I love my kids I would never do anything to hurt them”
That's what I was thinking! Like she went on rants about how stupid she would have to be to kill them and act the way she did but why wouldn't she say that it was insane to think that because I love them?

@@helenvarel4426 this was a white family and a child. I think back in this time many small town cops only dealt with white people and they treated them like they would their own. I’m not that old but I do think cops are worse now and definitely worse in big cities

Hungry Like a Wolf was actially on a cassette tape that she had in the car. It was a big part of the trial bc Christie testified that she heard the song throughout the entire shooting, which means that they keys would've had to be in the ignition when the kids were shot

I don't understand her at all! I'm a mother and my biggest fear is I will out live my sons. It's a nightmare to parents when they have to bury their children. Another thing I don't understand is how she can be mad at the children.that she put here. Those kids didn't choose to be here and when I hear that she didn't want her children because of a man I cringe. Parents hurting their own children is so disturbing. Since I had my own child these stories really hit me harder than ever. My daughter is 4, and when she gets a cold or a small cut I feel horrible and just want to help her and take her pain away. She's really tough too so most of the time she she falls and scrape a knee, I'm more concerned than her! The evil in this world hurts my heart

Yes! Also she was shot too, people usually go into a shock and are certainly in pain after being shot. Now if you shoot yourself it might be a different story because your body expects it so you won't go into a shock. You probably can deal with pain better too, for the same reason.

Agreed! It is actually not easy at all for most people. Most women struggle to conceive. She was one of the lucky ones and this is how she chose to use that “ability”. Idk why people like this or people that have 5 kids they have no custody of but people that want kids struggle.

My own mother in fact repeatedly told me this exact statement herself since a young age.. she had me when she was 16, and got pregnant "because she wanted someone who would love her." She then married a man who would repeatedly sexually abuse me from the age of 7/8 until I was 16. She resented me, hated me and did not show love or care. I found out later that she knew about the abuse and after years of counselling/therapy after leaving the family to a safe place many hours away in my mid 20's, I took him to court. Unfortunately he was well connected and walked away after being charged with 39 counts of abuse..and my mother defended him from the start and is still to this day with him. It took me years to heal from all of this, but I can now share my story knowing I am safe and none of that was ever my fault. I have never once looked backed or regretted my choice to walk away from the one person who was supposed to protect me. My heart goes out to those children in this story, and I hope one day the survivors are able to find peace in their hearts and heal. 💗
‘Moms’ who hurt their own babies are just an entire different level of evil to me. I’m a mother of 3, my 10 y/o son had his first tummy bug yesterday and seeing him in so much pain with the cramps was horrendous, as a mom you’d do anything to take their pain. I agree, I have 3 as well and my 10 year old has had 5 surgeries between 18 months and 5 years old and my husband literally had to hold me down around the arms in a super human hug to keep me from jumping screaming just to keep me calm because your child in any type situation with pain mentally or physically is a real mother's worst nightmare

This happened in my state and she was an object lesson for all of us. Diane Downs is a poster child for malignant narcissistic behavior. I was and remain unsurprised that she viewed children as beings to be used for HER comfort and HER needs; disposable in her eyes. Watching her in the 80s... it was a sobering experience to come to the conclusion that any mother could do this to her children and then get pregnant "because I was lonely". I've never forgotten how I thought, if she didn't want them, she could have given them to so many people who would love and care for them rather than this act of betrayal and selfishness.

My dad worked at the chowchilla women’s prison while she was there and caught her trying to escape, she filed a false report on my dad afterwards trying to say he assaulted her in front of one of the watch towers. Obviously the investigation showed it was not true but my dad was out of work for 8 weeks during the investigation because of it

I just came across this. Having known Kristy as a coworker and next door neighbor, Kristy told me that once she testified, Diane could never hurt her and Danny again, Kristy said it was difficult and easy at the same time to testify. It was the beginning of feeling safe for the 1st time in her life. But then petrified again when Diane escaped. Kristy has no memories of her biological father but was adopted by the DA and his wife eventually. Adult life became difficult as Kristy looked exactly as Diane and there were people who wanted to capitalized on her looks. Kristy and Danny do not acknowledge Diane as their mother. Both of them, after years of therapy are living good lives.
It's so good to know they're doing well these days. And I do think one of the worst things about parental abuse is the way children look, act and sound like their parents no matter how they feel about it.

The reason the prosecutor who adopted her children never said anything bad about her is because that would have traumatized them more. They probably struggled enough mentally loving their mother still even after what she did if he had said bad things that would have made it worse. I’m so happy to hear that the kids were adopted into a good family.

Hats off to the therapist on how she handled therapy lessons with the daughter. Not rushing things, gaining trust. And truly gaining she could have ripped that price paper right out from that girls hand right after first time she began the lesson and seen all along she had been writing her mom's name down but she didn't. She waited waited until the daughter wanted to show her herself who had hurt her and her siblings. Very well done. Took 9 months but that's therapy work done perfectly.

She tried to find out who her biological father is, but Diane would come up with all kind of different stories without giving Becky the answers she deserves. That's so sad,. I hope she is able to find the answers she's looking for since her biological mother is a pathetic excuse of a human and a mother. Becky deserves the best in life, to be happy and not feel weighted down by the horrific things her 'mother' has done. I hope her adoptive mother/family love her lots and are there for her during all of this.
I know in this case it meant the daughter had fear, but it isn't the case for all patients who can't speak or are even in semi comas. My husband was out of his mind in the hospital after trying to take his own life(overdose). They could not let me in the room because his vitals would go nuts when I walked in. Turns out he was trying to get my attention and wanted me to help him, but the reason didn't matter because it was dangerous for him to have his vital do this. Eventually they had to put him in a medical induced coma to get his brain and vitals to relax. So sometimes it's because they want the person near them and not that they fear the person.

My own mother in fact repeatedly told me this exact statement herself since a young age.. she had me when she was 16, and got pregnant "because she wanted someone who would love her."
She then married a man who would repeatedly sexually abuse me from the age of 7/8 until I was 16. She resented me, hated me and did not show love or care. I found out later that she knew about the abuse and after years of counselling/therapy after leaving the family to a safe place many hours away in my mid 20's, I took him to court. Unfortunately he was well connected and walked away after being charged with 39 counts of abuse..and my mother defended him from the start and is still to this day with him. It took me years to heal from all of this, but I can now share my story knowing I am safe and none of that was ever my fault.
I have never once looked backed or regretted my choice to walk away from the one person who was supposed to protect me.
My heart goes out to those children in this story, and I hope one day the survivors are able to find peace in their hearts and heal. 💗

Diane Downs is a poster child for malignant narcissistic behavior. I was and remain unsurprised that she viewed children as beings to be used for HER comfort and HER needs; disposable in her eyes.
Watching her in the 80s... it was a sobering experience to come to the conclusion that any mother could do this to her children and then get pregnant "because I was lonely". I've never forgotten how I thought, if she didn't want them, she could have given them to so many people who would love and care for them rather than this act of betrayal and selfishness.
The way she smiled and even started to laugh when describing how her daughter was bleeding from the mouth... unbelievable.

My dad worked at the chowchilla women’s prison while she was there and caught her trying to escape, she filed a false report on my dad afterwards trying to say he assaulted her in front of one of the watch towers. Obviously the investigation showed it was not true but my dad was out of work for 8 weeks during the investigation because of it

It`s quite disturbing how many times she was interviewed! And not once did she say I would never do this to my children. Only stuff like oh I could`ve done that better if it had been me.

I just came across this. Having known Kristy as a coworker and next door neighbor, Kristy told me that once she testified, Diane could never hurt her and Danny again, Kristy said it was difficult and easy at the same time to testify. It was the beginning of feeling safe for the 1st time in her life. But then petrified again when Diane escaped. Kristy has no memories of her biological father but was adopted by the DA and his wife eventually. Adult life became difficult as Kristy looked exactly as Diane and there were people who wanted to capitalized on her looks. Kristy and Danny do not acknowledge Diane as their mother. Both of them, after years of therapy are living good lives.

It's so good to know they're doing well these days. And I do think one of the worst things about parental abuse is the way children look, act and sound like their parents no matter how they feel about it.

The reason the prosecutor who adopted her children never said anything bad about her is because that would have traumatized them more. They probably struggled enough mentally loving their mother still even after what she did if he had said bad things that would have made it worse. I’m so happy to hear that the kids were adopted into a good family.

As the investigation continued, and he realised Diane had done it, he and his wife came to decide to adopt them.

Hats off to the therapist on how she handled therapy lessons with the daughter. Not rushing things, gaining trust. And truly gaining she could have ripped that price paper right out from that girls hand right after first time she began the lesson and seen all along she had been writing her mom's name down but she didn't. She waited waited until the daughter wanted to show her herself who had hurt her and her siblings. Very well done. Took 9 months but that's therapy work done perfectly.

She tried to find out who her biological father is, but Diane would come up with all kind of different stories without giving Becky the answers she deserves. I know in this case it meant the daughter had fear, but it isn't the case for all patients who can't speak or are even in semi comas. My husband was out of his mind in the hospital after trying to take his own life(overdose). They could not let me in the room because his vitals would go nuts when I walked in. Turns out he was trying to get my attention and wanted me to help him, but the reason didn't matter because it was dangerous for him to have his vital do this. Eventually they had to put him in a medical induced coma to get his brain and vitals to relax. So sometimes it's because they want the person near them and not that they fear the person.
That's in a movie I saw on basic cable. When I found out it was based on a true story I felt so sick.
Anne Rule has her own motivation to sensationalize these stories
