Usually when people try hard to keep up a certain “image” the image is no where close to the actual reality. Couples that are usually upfront with their high and lows usually have a image that is similar to their reality.
I hate when people say that about my partner and i because we are not the way people assume we are privately like in public. Maybe they acted well around people but weren’t always so happy together alone
anyone that calls themselves perfect or gets called that by people are always suspicious. no one/no family is ever perfect. all a "perfect family" is, is a family that hides everything and cares too much about how they appear to others. its especially suspicious if the immediate family even says theyre perfect, like whats going on that their family doesn't even know about their problems
Genuinely the entire reason I watch her content. Pretty much every other "true crime" youtuber makes me feel gross with the way they present the information
Keep in mind that dear Michael was having an affair with one of the makers of the documentary. I have always thought he was guilty. The owl narrative is also ridiculous.
people say they were in love blah blah blah… but married women are the most murdered women in the US… is it hard to believe that a husband could do that??
But..the kids never spoke out and said “my dad is abusive. My dad hit us..my dad yelled etc” they loved this man. They said he wasn’t a violent man. Just my thoughts.
@@Emily-ew6um no, children don’t see everything behind the scenes always also theres no way two women in his life have passed away due to the same injuries from falling down the staircase with same blood spatter and similar setting concluding that you don’t have to be actually abusive to commit such crime
I think it is so sweet to see your pets lay there on the chair while you tell your true crime stories. The must find your voice comforting and of course be with Mommy
it’s still mind blowing to me that this whole accident during 01’ was filmed like they knew it was going to be a documentary. like they’re lives were filmed. i didn’t see any grieving or finding justice for the mother. so sad.
Not to mention, they forced them to not use ANY vital damning evidence against Michael to be used. Can you believe saying -- "I didnt murder my wife, but an Owl did it."??
Yeah and 758 hours of Duane Deaver being a corrupt liar with a poor sense of due diligence, who has no scientific process to acquiring evidence or ensuring it is of a reasonable standard before contributing to someone being locked away for something they didn't do... more than once.
I’ve watched the entire Netflix documentary, I’ve listened to the Mile Higher podcast episode, and I’ve stayed up to date on following this case…but I still clicked so fast on this video JUST to hear what Kendall has to say
i’m glad you mentioned that they did a podcast bc i was like .. i swear she’s done a video on it before LOL but i just listened to the episode before haha
@@hannabarnett8334 I feel this! obviously, the blessing is that we have twice the content/depth of discussion from kendall’s channel and kendall’s/ josh’s podcast, but the curse is that I can never remember where I heard specific information about certain cases😅
How did they do such in-depth testing that they found microscopic pieces of owl feathers and wood…yet they didn’t even test the blow poke? Also when birds are trapped in a home they usually fly up to the ceiling and get trapped…they don’t calmly flying out the front door when they feel like it…
Yeah this owl just Just came in the house attacked her left no feathers on the floor or attacked her outside he could’ve heard her scream there should’ve been blood outside it’s just too much I can’t
I wonder if there were any products in the house that used owl feathers. Dusters, pillows, etc. There is just so much more evidence to his guilt than to unlikely outlandish theories.
@@SashaAMelina yeah if it had even started outside, wouldn’t he have heard her scream? Usually you freak out good when something from above and out of no where starts attacking you.
He divorced his first wife. She just recently died at 78 from a heart attack. The family friend died from a rare disorder and he adopted her daughters.
Why does no one ever suspect that the stairs were the weapon, 2 examples: they are arguing, he walks up the stairs she follows, he turns and pushes her, she falls backwards hits her head. He then comes down steps over her, foot print explained, then continues to hit her head repeatedly againt the step. Or they are arguing at the bottom of the stairs, in the hallway he pushes her, again she falls backwards hits her head and then he repeatedly hits her head against the stairs or wall. Wood explains blunt force trauma without fracture. Why does there have to be a hand held weapon? If someone grabs your head and begins hitting it against a stair, may also explain clump of her hair in her hand, trying to get him to let go, grabbing at the hand on your head, and pulling out a clump of hair. Lots of ways the the stairs could be the 'weapon'. Owl feathers: picked up from resting your head on an out door pool lounger, as well as the twig.
Repeated blunt force trauma by the stairs would more likely to cause fractures than lacerations. In fact, wooden stairs doesn't explain lacerations at all. It needs to have a realy sharp edge and stairs usually don't
I read a possible explanation for the owl feathers somewhere along the way: Birds perch on chimneys -> feather fragments fall down chimney -> microscopic particles end up on fire poker. So, the owl feathers could potentially support the fire poker theory.
Just a thought…Kathleen herself could have been the one to print out the messages between Michael and the escort.. i think that would be a reasonable thing to do if you find out you’re being cheated on..print out the evidence to confront your partner, or even print them out and put them in his desk so he could find them himself.. idk.. so many variables🤦🏻♀️🦉
I trained owls, I’ve been the victim of a grumpy owl and they cause serious damage. An owl attack would cause such a commotion she would be screaming and it’s a 1 in a million series of events.
It’s a 1 in a million series of events but it’s still possible, you have to be dead sure without a shadow of a doubt that someone has committed that crime before you lash them in prison and throw away the key. I just don’t think there was enough evidence for or against, so I’m still very undecided on if he did it or not
I have a genuine question for you then! If you are attacked by such a large bird and presumably scramble to get it off, would there not be a ton of big feathers and down left after the attack? Both at the scene and for example in the hair of the attacked person?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t wild owls go to escape first when confronted with a larger animal like a human? Like wouldn’t it’s first instinct be to flee? I guess it would peck or scratch u if it was thrashing but wouldn’t it fly away first?
I think he killed her BUT I don’t think he had a fair trial or that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt he did it. Regardless-the way he comes across, the initial 911 calls-it’s like bad acting. This is a guy who was in Nam and had seen much worse. Why didn’t he give her CPR or mouth to mouth-he’d been trained in it? Why was the blood dry? He killed her earlier in the evening probably after an argument and then later called it in.
My theory: the printed copies of his messages with the escort could've been printed off by Kathleen. Hear me out. She found out and wanted to confront him so she printed it off and stashed it in his drawers so he'd find it and know that she knows. This would make it so she didn't have to confront him face to face but still kinda confronts him. He finds them and then he was worried that she was going to leave and that would leave him financially unstable. So he either panicked and killed her for the life insurance or he planned it for the life insurance money. Probably attacked her with the fire poker thing which could've easily had wood and owl feathers on it from the fire place/wood pile. Feathers and wood are common there. It makes sense. (Edit/Updated theory) Someone pointed out that his actions are theorised to be premeditated because of how similar Elizabeth's and Kathleen's murders were. I agree and that changes my theory slightly. He could've found the affair conversations she printed out and decided she needed to go for financial reasons mentioned in the video and in my comment. He then most likely looked at Elizabeth's murder as being a template because of how successful he was. He got away with it and hardly anyone questioned it at all. He then couldve planned to kill Kathleen in a similar way because he thought he'd get away with it like he did with Elizabeth. He knew it couldn't be identical so he changed the stories up a little however the way in which he killed the two was quite similar. This indicates that he wanted to recycle the method because it was so successful. Thank you to the person who pointed out the flaw in my theory.
Makes sense to me! I was thinking maybe she printed it off so she could confront him with it and he couldn’t try to deny or delete any of the conversations!
I totally agree! The feathers could have come from a wood pile-and that wood pile came from a tree on their property that used to have an owl living/nesting in it. Makes sense to me!
I know this case well. What I can never get past is that statistically speaking 1 man having 2 women in his life meet an untimely end in nearly the exact same way is improbable. Plus he had a secret double life which I remember being very scandalous as the trial was going on. Besides the owl theory is very very unlikely.
I have a theory that his first wife did die in a tragic accident but the second was almost replicated, like he was stuck on that first death and either had the idea to make it look similar as it looked accidental OR he simply pushed the first one, the second one but she didn't die right away so he had to finish her off with the weapon.
In all honesty I really think the owl theory is true. If you think about it, she had a clump of her hair in her hands, pulled from the root. If an owl was attacking your head, you would do anything you could to get it off, if you felt something you thought was the owl you would yank it as hard as you could. This explains why she had her hair in her hand, if he was attacking her with that stick then she wouldn't pull at her head, she would try defending it. Also, the owl feathers and branch in her hair is literally inexpiable, owl feathers in your hair would make sense if an owl was attacking your head. Also, you can say it's a coincidence that both his wives died the same way but for one isn't it a coincidence that her head markings matched an owls? Also this would also make it different than his first wife, people's spouses dying like this is very rare but it still happens. And owl attacks are rare but that doesn't mean they don't happen. His timing was off by an hour but honestly recalling time can be hard for some people and there's the whole thing of why didn't he hear her screaming but if I'm not wrong his daughters were in that house and didn't hear any either. It's a common misconception that EVERYONE would scream while being attacked as some people could be so scared they lose their ability to do so. I understand that the owl theory is a stretch but the owl feathers and clump of hair are damning.
@@NobodyUndefined Or, as someone commented elsewhere, the feathers could have been tracked inside on people's shoes and been on the floor where she hit her head/whatever implement she was hit with. That would explain both the microscopic owl feathers and wood tracings. It's at least as plausible as an owl attack that only left microscopic evidence.
Kendall please look into the case of James Ryker Biel. It’s one of the saddest cases I have ever heard of. I reached out to his mother who has been trying to spread awareness on this case and she would love to work with you.
This entire case was a mess, but I lost it when they brought in the owl 😭😭😭😭 Why are they not focusing on the son who was there for everything but refused to talk to the police???
What I don't get is how you are allowed to refuse to talk to the police! Issue a warrant for his arrest and being him in for questioning! I don't understand.
That’s not the weirdest part. Every side hired their own expert to work against each other regarding some topics that show no room for speculation. Experts acted strange and slightly emotional, answered questions outside their specialty. Son suddenly found a key evidence but doesn’t call the police to investigate? It’s against the law especially after finding a potential murder weapon, you’re required to call the police, no photographer or personal investigator needed. We received information that Elizabeth was in fact murdered by blunt force but no separate investigation was made. What’s with the sisters digging up old stories and, what’s that all about? Sexual orientation? What’s going on with the daughters? Are they inside a cult or is that just how rich families operate? How come no one seems to care about the mothers death, they seem to be fine thinking that she fell and that’s that, end of the story no alternative. Since I’m an emotional creature I do have the strong feeling that he is guilty, but after watching the series I don’t see how he got evicted. There was no motive. No weapon. No witnesses. There’s only the body, the blood and Liz death in Germany which he’s not guilty of though. That’s just not enough to proof that you can say for sure. Just sketchy stuff. I didn’t enjoy the series, strange camera povs and lots of strange people. I belobe they’re all from a different dimension than me
They didn't use the owl in the defense. They didn't even think of it! But if you actually research the full theory, it fits the evidence the most! She was attacked in the front yard. A blood trail was found from the front to the stairs. She then fainted. They also said that their were feathers in her hand. The defense attorney assumed it was from a pillow, but didn't think it was important. It also matches the head wounds. Lacerations without skull fractures. This doesn't happen in a beating to the head.
@@truthtransistorradio6716 Absolutely no way there would be THAT much blood on the WALLS of the stairway unless she was beaten there. The autopsy showed signs of a beating. And owls don't decide to attack people out of the blue if ever. It was in the early hours of the morning. No way, Kathleen was outside bothering an owl at that time of night. She likely confronted Michael at the pool about what she'd just seen on his computer and threatened divorce. He likely became enraged and started attacking her. No doubt, she ran, trying to get to the house to lock the door.
Right... and it's not like a common death. If they both died of cancer or heart attack, I'd think coincidence and probably have sympathy for the spouse.
This is exactly what I thought of when they started talking about the owl theory. They said the wounds on the two women's heads looked similar. Did an owl get BOTH of them??? I doubt it.
lol Reminds me of "The Jinx" where the guy insists that all these people that are connected to him that just end up dead are definitely not his fault and it's just coincidence! ...until he confesses to murdering them.
It was not the same way. One had a medical condition, and in effect had a stroke. Her bleeding was internal. They just happened to be located at a similar spot in their houses. Coincidences do happen, we as stupid humans think they mean something, when in fact it's just random.
@@mrs.elentz2336 They didn't die of the same thing. One died of a medical illness - essentially a stroke. One died of either a fall or attack by an owl or other.
I was so torn on this case (likely because of the bias of the documentary and I play devils advocate a lot) but the moment I knew it was him was Cathleen’s sister was initially on his side and just days after her death she was in his study talking to him. They were looking out the window over the pool and she noticed ALL of the patio furniture was put up for the winter and covered in leaves. There was NO seating around the pool and he claimed to have been hanging out there all night for hours SITTING by the pool….. just a few days later when the documentary crew showed up to film he MOVED THE FURNITURE OUT BY THE POOL. She said in that moment she was filled with fear realizing what he had done.
I’m with you on that but he could have been sitting outside on a chair from inside or just on the ground. Idk what really happened as I wasn’t there but you don’t have to use lawn chairs to sit by a pool.
@@Jaxinator423 no I definitely get that I believe he did it but I also believe he could brought a chair from inside. Or uncovered and recovered them. And the leaves depending on the wind very well could have recovered the chairs. But I do believe he is guilty just playing devils advocate too. And if he’s ex military he could be more healthy than an average 60 year old depending on his actual MOS in the military. But again he’s probably guilty
"my wife fell off the stairs please help!" 911 operator:how many steps sir? mike peterson clearly not expecting that question pretends he didn't hear her and start counting the steps. he uses the word "huh" to buy time, the only one time you'll ever hear him say that. M.P:idk 15-20 steps.(finally answering after 15 seconds) i knew he was guilty from the first episode
I watched a friend at a party almost die once when a deck railing broke and he fell 15 feet onto rocks/concrete right on the back of his neck (had to wear a metal spine support device for like 2 years) and there was NOT EVEN CLOSE to this amount of blood. This is just sick. This was no damn accident
I was about to say!!! When I was in 5th grade my parents were doing the annual cleaning of the outside of our house and it’s 2 stories and the wooden ladder broke from under my mom and she fell from the 2nd story. She broke a large clay planter pot with her head and I remember when my dad ran inside to call 911 and I went outside to see what happened my mom was laying still but there was so puddle of blood no large gashes that needed sutures just permanent internal injuries and such like 6 herniated discs in her thoracic and a bad concussion. She has to undergo a procedure yearly to get injections on her spine but there was no puddle of blood like you’d assume there would be .... and she broke a clay planter and hit the concrete driveway . A similar thing happened to our neighbor up the road who unfortunately passed away but there wasn’t a large puddle of external blood ... she died of internal brain bleeding when her head hit the concrete. I’ve always thought this case was suspicious it’s sickening but also very clear she did not just die from a fall down the stairs - it’s possible to die but there wouldn’t be that much blood
My dad fell head first down unfinished stairs this last summer. About 22 narrow stairs, with sharp edges and hit his head on the bottom doorframe at the end of the stairs. Similar layout to this. He was in a coma for 4 days and the internal bleeding made his head swell up unimaginable. He broke his nose and arm, and yet there were only two small drips of blood from his nose. He survived and is doing well but is a little funnier. The fact that was so traumatic and yet there was almost NO blood is bright red flags to how both of these staircase murders looked. How sick that he is free.
I have fallen and cut my head and yes there was a lot of blood but it accumulated over minutes and dripped down. There would have been no splatter if I had fallen in a stairwell because the blood wasn't just suddenly there to be splashed on the walls. The blood would have poured out after she had landed. No possibility of splatter.
I fell backward down the stairs at my son’s apartment building. 11 stairs. One ginormous laceration on the back of my head that took forever to heal and I still have a scar from. The amount of blood everywhere from one laceration was freaky af.
Also, the reason Kathleen divorced her first husband-- he cheated on her. I highly doubt she'd be cool with Michael having other relations... even though he insisted she knew but it was "don't ask, don't tell" type of situation. Think he's a pathological liar, narcissistic, manipulative man....
Another weird thing about the cheating is that at the very end of the documentary Micheal alludes to the fact that if he could go back he would have told her the truth.. so he contradicts himself... there is no way she knew!
So true. Also did anyone else notice in his press clip that when he said ‘I would never do anything to hurt her’ he was nodding his head? His words say no but his body language is making the ‘yes’ motion.
Why is everyone saying they were “Torn” by this case ? Almost Nothing that micheal said really even added up plus she was the bread winner of the family he also was having an affair and had a similar situation happened like this a few years back.
She may have likely fallen down when he attacked her with her head parallel to the stairs, he grabs the sides of her head and smashes it against the edge of the stairs. That's how I also think she ended up with her own hair in her hands, she was also grabbing on trying to fight him off.
@@emelphick4742 I've been reading these comments and what you say makes the most sense to me too. It seems like she would've been trying to protect her head with her hands during his assault. If the blows were so hard to open up her scalp like the way they showed, then the hair maybe would've just come right out. I'm kind of stuck on the owl feathers though. Where do you think they came from?
Wow! So if the police are accusing you of killing a person shouldn't you try to prove your innocence? The comments in this video are full of hatred towards him, because yes, he is very unpleasant, but being an unpleasant person does not take away your human rights. If so, 90% of RUclips users should have no rights at all.
I understand all your view points. Maybe his lack of trying to prove innocence should of been a point the prosecution should of followed? Seems like a missed opportunity. I agree that not being a nice person doesn't make you guilty.
Woow you say the sentiment is that the he did is there any reason why you think he did that can enlighten me because at first that’s what I thought but now I’m unsure…
I couldn’t finish it. After already watching videos on the case. Seeing how one sided it was and bias towards Michael I couldn’t get through the second episode.
Birds only extend to the max when flying, hovering etc. If a a bird is attacking they won't have their wings completely extended. In a house they won't be able to fly keeping their wings straight either, because there isn't a sufficient draft. Just check a falcon or owl catching prey or how they do to eat meats or carcass. Or check any video of birds attacking. If they get tangled in the hair they can't fly as easy
@@faithl2067 well yes but why was there microscopic evidence at all! Is this a thing that happens? Owl feathers just get in your hair in North Carolina?
At no point in the documentary does he seek justice for his wife. He doesn't seem to want to know what happened to her...because he knew exactly what happened. Anyone else would be seeking the truth. Also his hold over his adopted daughters is almost cult like
@@nataliazenkova5774 It's just a saying. Two people involved in the same exact freak accident death in two separate instances related to the same husband is all but impossible. But it's certain the defense lawyer will argue it's plausible.
Michael’s son flat out says in the documentary that if his dad were to tell him he killed her, he would run over and help him cover it up. Pile that on with the son already being there before paramedics, the blood being dry, the blood smear on Michael’s pants, and the shoe prints, is enough to scream suspicion. And literally anyone walking into their house late at night and stumbling upon that gruesome scene wouldn’t have automatically assumed that their wife fell down the stairs like Michael did in the 911 call. Show those crime scene photos to anyone without any context and they would say that that person was attacked, not, “oh looks like she fell down those stairs.”
YES! this is what I keep saying! If I found my boyfriend like that absolutely covered in blood with those wounds I would automatically think there was an intruder in the house that had clubbed him to death, not that he’d fallen down a few steps.
And the first Michael says in the 911 call is she had an accident, that’s very specific for someone in shock. If you’re genuinely in shock you just describe what you see and not how it happened
I grew up in Durham,NC and remember when I was a kid this case was everywhere. I didn't really understand the hoopla bc I was like seven or eight. Once I got older and understood the story it was always so eerie to drive by the Peterson's mansion
I don't think she fell down the stairs, but I disagree. I lost so much blood from a VERY minor head injury that I fainted. There was so much blood...I can't even explain it. The head injuries she had are gonna make you bleed A LOT. Again, I don't think she fell down the stairs, but i could see that much blood from that situation.
You can't say there's no way. If you hit your head or different parts of your body in the right way you will cause a massive amount of bleeding. Is it more likely to be something else probably but you can't just discount staircase because you don't want to believe it's possible to cause that much damage. Trust me falls down the stairs don't look like they do in the movies.
Proof > pattern The prosecution simply fucked up the case so bad that they forced themselves to let him go free. Guilty or not he is now free and forever will be
You can always fabricate evidence that someone is guilty, you can hardly produce evidence of innocence if the police want you to be guilty. Michael is a narcissist, but as far as I understand, that is not synonymous with murderer. The main problem is that he is a very unpleasant person, therefore everyone is inclined to think that is guilty. Suddenly, it turns out that Michael is a mastermind capable of manipulating the German army, but he is not capable of inventing a new way to assassinate someone? How weird isn't it?
@@LullaGvz I actually think that Elizabeth’s death could have been an accident for real and he got inspired how it was ruled as accidental. To me that makes the most sense.
I'd like to see a statistician calculate the odds of being on the scene for two different women dying by falling down the stairs with blood everywhere. Or being fatally attacked by an odds. Surely both are miniscule.
I think that’s why they so staunchly support Michael. The truth that their only “parent” killed their mothers is to horrible to believe. Denial can be very powerful.
Currently watching the HBO dramatization of this. I was iffy of Michael when the Netflix doc came out. Kendalls vid comes out and then I’m convinced he’s guilty. Now the HBO dramatization of it came out I’m 1000% certain Michael did it (it’s pretty obvious from the beginning) . I can’t believe he’s a free man now.
He's free because the prosecution shot for too high of a charge and faked evidence (primarily Duane Deaver's testimony but there were other hinky things) to win. They should have gone for a lesser murder charge or voluntary manslaughter. Then they wouldn't have needed Deaver's faked evidence and Michael Peterson would still be in prison.
Okay the “Owl Theory”- my argument against it. So barn owls were common in that area and they had been sitting outside at night. We have lots of birds around our house and any wind will get them along with sticks, dirt and everything organic all over everything. What if A) she was sitting outside and laid against the backrest of a chair that had some twigs and feathers stuck in it and they got caught in her hair? Or B) what if Michael beat her with an object that was outside and had a few bird feathers and other organic matter on it? I would believe those more than an owl attacking her and ripping her skull to shreds. 🤷🏻♀️
That sounds more unlikely than the owl attack. I could see maybe one feather out there was multiple and her hair was pulled out from the root in her own hand. Also the wounds match owl claws.
The owl theory would interest me more if Elizabeth hadn’t died in almost the exact same way as Kathleen. And whose to say she actually knew he was bisexual, we have to rely on his word for that. The theory I lean towards is she found out about that affair that night- and he snapped.
Oh totally! Another commenter mentioned how Kathleen had been cheated on by her first husband so she would’ve been absolutely pissed if her second did the same too
@@elijah6409 For some people the part about cheating that pisses them off is mainly the lying. An open relationship is very different. Maybe she was protecting herself by making sure he would not have to lie. The fact that he had stuff printed out casually lying around in his nightstand makes me think that part might be true. I don’t really think that part is relevant to the case. Still think he’s guilty though. Or the son did it and Michael covered it up.
Most people in open relationships don’t hire or seek escorts though. They just date regular people and usually close friends and family are aware the relationship is open. Kathleens loved ones deny her knowing about the affair.
Those poor girls... imagine realizing you've most likely been adopted by your mother's killer and then he goes off and kills the only other mother figure you have in almost the exact same way.
@@amynoosun3703 as a daughter of narcissist father it's sad but makes sense to me. They may be scared to oppose him or most likely, they're trauma bonded so deeply that they see his true self.
Owl theory: She was hit with a sturdy branch. They found fragments of wood and microscopic owl feather (micoroscopic owl feathers could easily have been on the branch since Owls perch on branches. If you think of the shape of branches, they are irregular and can have a trident formation. I believe he hit her with a heavy branch (something that could easily be disposed of; hid initially and then disposed of via burning or even just driving a distance and disposing of it). Because she had neck injuries that show great pressure to the neck - something an owl could NOT possibly do, the fact that there was another staircase death with him involved. To me says not an owl. If she was attached by an owl wouldn’t she have tried to call for Micheal while it was happening and while she was outside - I’de be screaming bloody murder! And the a fact that it was 50 degrees and he still was sitting outside smoking a pipe at 2 in the morning in shorts and a T-shirt. So many other pieces of evidence rule out that she was attacked by an owl. It doesn’t make sense. Also, sound carries an enormous distance at that time if night/morning, he would or should have heard something. I can’t believe she would have been silent during the attack and then just went inside without calling out to him.
Regarding the neck injury, she did have a known neck injury just months before her death. I think including this in the case is so odd because her neck would definitely still be healing.
Everyone's talking about Michael but I feel for the kids😕 Imagine your mother being killed by your own father after rooting for him the entire time......
I'm disappointed that only one of his children believe he did it...not even the adopted ones (Elizabeth's children) and I don't understand why, maybe the truth is too painful
@@salazar556 Yeah especially since they were so young when he would have killed their mother, they probably don't really have memories of their Mom :-(

I honestly wonder if he did do it and used a fireplace tool to do it, it makes sense that there could be microscopic owl feathers and wood in her hair. Maybe I’m the only one who’s experienced this... but if you have a real fireplace in your house it’s not uncommon to find bird feathers from birds sitting on the chimney. If they used their fireplace, and they used fireplace tools.... it makes sense to me that that’s how it would be transferred to her hair?
Thank you for sharing this!! I never knew this, since I've never used a fireplace myself.. Now i can see why this "Owl theory" is being pushed so much!🤔
I don’t think that these microscopic feathers are much evidence anways if these owls are around. I mean they were sitting outside just before she died - it could have got in her hair easily in my opinion. Your theory makes sense too though! It certainly could have gotten there though the murder weapon too.
Crime Weekly podcast did a deep dive on this & there’s tons of details that make it so hard to come to a conclusion on this one. Prosecutors were shady af in this trial. The blow poke was actually found before & was even photographed, it was in the prosecutor’s file after…but they didn’t make that public 😒
when I first heard about Kathleen's death, I didn't suspect anything - accidents do happen. however, as soon as it was said Elizabeth died the EXACT same way, with the EXACT same injuries to the head/face, there was no doubt in my mind that he killed both of them.. there is no way that those 2 deaths being so similar is merely a coincidence. the owl theory is quite interesting, I will admit. highly unlikely? yes. impossible? no. the odd thing to me is how the micro owl feathers got on her hair, but as some previous comments mentioned, that could have been transferred from a variety of places. so while the theory does have merit, I don't think an owl is to blame for her death.
And that clump of her own hair in her hand pulled from the root? I don't understand why she'd pull her own hair. I'm 99 percent sure he killed her but why was that clump of hair in her hand? I don't get that
The possibility of it being a coincidence both accidentally died in such a similar way is crazy small. But the prosecution just made a totally shit case. No murder weapon, no good motive, the Brady violation. What evidence did they even have against him other than he was there and the other wife died the same way? That's not enough, they need actual evidence he did it and they didn't have any.
During an owl attack, you wouldn't just have micro feathers left at the scene, you'd also have large feathers everywhere. There's now way that someone wouldn't have pulled some feathers out during the attack.
he’s definitely guilty. but the case i was handled wrongfully. her clothes weren’t tested for DNA,the blow poke wasn’t taken into evidence and both of the blood splatter specialists were both sketch. there is definitely some wholes in the case
I totally agree he’s as guilty as sin the prosecution made a lot of mistakes otherwise he would still be in prison today. I feel bad for his adopted daughters odds are he killed their mother to and they’ll never know
I agree I did not like the prosecution I think they handled it all wrong. It’s really crazy cause you can’t say without a doubt that he did it. It’s all theories of what could’ve happened and sadly we probably won’t ever know the truth. But I do think he’s guilty.
My thing is why would they test her clothes for dna? They live together so chances are his dna will already be on her. I don’t think that would be an actual indication that he did it. Maybe if potentially someone else did it then maybe.
@@anarsuarez i don’t think he did it. I did at first but by the end I was pretty sold on he didn’t. Not only was there no evidence, motive, or any of that but his body language and the way he spoke seemed honest to me.
He did it. His blood foot prints were all over the place. She didn’t slip over and over. And splatter blood all over like that. He tried to clean her blood. He did this before and got away with it.
The thing about this story that always astounded me is that the investigators and blood spatter analyst could never conceive of any other way for him to have injured his wife than using an instrument to beat her with, and the spatter evidence did not support that hypothesis. However, it is clear she died of blunt force head trauma. This was done by him grabbing her by her hair and beating her head on the stairs and landing. He did beat her to death. He just didn't use any blunt instrument. He just grabbed her head and beat it into the stairs. If you put that puzzle piece into the narrative, it all suddenly makes sense how he did it, and why there was no weapon. Can't believe the investigators never even conceived of this scenario, in any analyses or documentary I've watched about this case.
They did consider this. The problem was there was no skull fractures, brain bleeding, edema, etc. Rudolf literally pulled out over 250 cases where there was a beating death and ALL had some form of skull fracture. If Michael had done this in the way you said, he would have fractured her skull somewhere. The stairs are too solid for them not to. Her only injuries were lacerations to the skull. That's why they needed something somewhat solid yet HOLLOW to inflict the injuries.. . Hence, the blowpoke. How do you beat someone to death over the head using ANYTHING and NOT fracture their skull? I think he just let her bleed out. Or... it was a HOOdunnit....
They needed "Dexter" to explain the blood spatter! I think it is possible he broke her hyoid while holding her neck and later her hair to bang her head against the stairs, maybe just scraping the stair above to cause the lacerations. Even if skull fracture is typical in such cases, he could have banged her head with less force because he was in a rage and was just trying to "make her shut up".
The Owl theory is interesting but let’s face it. Michael is so guilty it’s not funny. To have two deaths occur in the same manner of course he is guilty of both murders. I have watched the Netflix documentary and just thought he was arrogant and narcissistic. He is a horrible person.
I think he killed her. The slip and fall theory doesn’t make any sense. The injuries to the back of her head were probably made by a fucking object. And the Elizabeth situation is weird too. I honestly think he killed them both. So sad!! RIP to Kathleen and Elizabeth.
I read the book about this case. Michael never formally adopted Martha and Margaret. He got more money from them if he didn't adopt them. I found that interesting....
my grandparents did this when they adopted me from my mom, it’s not very rare. You can ask for guardianship rather than complete adoption, maybe the kids didn’t consider them as a birth father or maybe he didn’t want them to. My grandparents didn’t want to replace my mom or dad legally so they just did guardian
I don’t believe in the owl theory I feel like since she was outside the owl feathers/twig in her hair were just because she was spending time out. If you think about it if it was the owl attacking her it would have left a lot more feathers behind that aren’t microscopic.
@@starrstarrstarr the feathers were in her hair. She could have gotten them from just walking around and the wind blowing them in. Maybe she fell outside first and got them and the wood stuck in her hair then. Also, how do you explain no other feathers at the scene? There would be feathers outside. More feathers in her hair not just microscopic.
The way Michael tries to save himself after saying the last time he saw Kathleen alive makes him look so much more guilty, if you weren't guilty you wouldn't of thought that much into a word mix up
He absolutely killed his wife, had an affair with Elizabeth after the husband died, got her to put his name on some paperwork then killed her as well. He used the same method since he killed Elizabeth in Germany and thought no connection would be established.
My dad fell down the stairs about 12 years ago and smashed his head so hard his skull split in two (he survived). There was a tiny, TINY pool of blood and no lacerations. Michael is full of it.
Very sorry about your dad's accident, but thank you for that comment, it makes a lot of sense. Blood doesn't usually splatter all over the place unless there's a significant force and/or additional motion involved. After all human head is not a water baloon filled with red dye as some seem to think.
That is horrible!! I also heard of another fall down the stairs that resulted in death in forensic files. A woman was found dead at the bottom of the stairs and initially they thought the husband did it, but evidence was brought in and legit cleared him. She unfortunately was running down the stairs, tripped, and had her head caught between the stairs and the wall which broke her neck as she was falling - I believe it was... Anyway... no blood there either. When people fall they smack their heads. I feel like that would produce a pool of blood, not splatter like Kathleen's death. It all just seems so obvious!
I only liked because I'm glad ur pops survived a split skull♥️ also it gives me more insight to stairway falls. Something I never thought about before.
This was such an open and close case. There's no way all that damage happened in a fall. Once head trauma occurs with a broken neck, the body goes limp, it does NOT bounce around like a pinball.
I live in the same neighborhood as Michael Peterson and see him around town. The owls in our neighborhood aren't aggressive by any means. We hear them at night all of the time, but you're lucky to actually see one. Zero chance it was an owl.
Right, I grew up with all kinds of wild life, including owls, in FL not NC but like owls don't randomly attack they're provoked into attack so why would this owl randomly attack in a place frequented by people? They tend to stay away from human activity in my experience...
When I read into the owl theory, the lawyer (I think?) who brought up the theory was saying a jogger had been attacked recently before Kathleen died. I was very surprised. But I don’t remember where I read it!
Great summary of the case, Kendall. As an attorney, I appreciate your excellent use of the facts and circumstances of this puzzling, fascinating case and yes, I do tend to agree with your final assessment of the conclusion. The prosecution screwed up the evidence so guilt beyond a reasonable doubt wouldn't have been possible but the facts add up to 'guilty' and the Alford plea was appropriate.
His son. Did they prove his sons location before arriving to the scene? He was already there before EMS? How far away did he live? Why would he not do an interview?
Also curious, did anyone ask the son if the front door was unlocked when he got home (assuming he opened the front door) as that could be added into the “break in” theory. Just so much going on here, even the owls are in on it now! I do feel like his son may have helped him
@@WallysGirl123 the owl theory is incredibly interesting like the feathers and everything is definitely VERY SUS. However the son… like I don’t know denying an interview when you were the second person to witness the scene. However his dad gives massive narc vibes I’m not sure if he would even be willing to do that for his son.
Hmm; I think the owl theory is ridiculous. I’m 50/50 on this case. Although there’s quite a bit of shady stuff going on with this case; it is possible, IMO, for her to have fallen down the stairs. But who knows.. we’ll never know.
It's easy to believe he did it, but my wife was attacked by an owl in Atlanta many years ago She ended up needing 32 stitches in her head. Once I found the owl theory I was shook cause the wounds looked like my wife head.
@@molly5292 I don't have any feelings one way or another about the owl theory, but the wounds from one attack vs. another attack by the same type of animal can be different in severity. Not to mention different species of owls and how aggressive they might be, or even aggression levels within the same species. I've seen some pics online of people's wounds after owl attacks and they can be incredibly terrible. That said, it's a reach in this case, and usually the more simple explanation is the more likely, i.e. the husband did it.
I think the most disturbing kind of murderers are the ones who live for years with their victims. How can you murder someone who live with you for over 10 years? Who sleeps with you every night. I think that is just so cold to kill someone who is for so many years a love one to you.
Yes!! They are all disturbing but the familial ones where they live, interact, care etc for you are so much more disturbing. How horrible for the victims. To know a person you love/loved would do this to you.
Those that seem to “have it all”, most of the time have it the worst & also hide the darkest secrets. It’s just a facade many social climbers & people that end up getting murdered use.
Love how in depth you go with the cases and getting justice for families. You inspired me to start my own true crime channel and help fight for justice too! ❤️
It's funny Kendall mentioned it was brought up in court that it looked as if someone tried to clean up the blood. I say this because if you look in the bottom right of the picture of Kathleen's body, there is a WHOLE roll of paper towels with blood on them. Does anyone know if that was a point used in court?? 🤷♀️🤷♀️
I just don’t buy the owl theory. You’re telling me an owl broke into their house, murdered a women, and somehow escaped without any sign of it ever being their. Seems like a bit of stretch.
I believe the theory is the owl swooped down and grabbed her thinking she was prey while outside the home then she ran inside to escape. I think he killed her but owls are sons of bitches and can do some damage. Lost one of my sweet free range chickens to one a few days ago. The only bright white one of the bunch so she was easiest to see in the dark..... swooped right down and grabbed her and flew off without leaving a trace. A woman’s hair could easily be mistaken as the fur of prey to an owl, especially at night. The other murder being connected to him is what makes that theory unbelievable to me.
Even if she was attacked outside, it still doesn’t explain the amount of blood at the scene. Considering the evidence the theory seems random to me. Owls can be aggressive but in this instance it seems very unlikely that an owl had anything to do with it.
@@springsogourne i believe he was still outside though. I believe they think she got attacked on the way in and then ran inside afterwards. Maybe she was trying to run to the bathroom to clean herself up and see how bad her injuries were in the mirror. So thats why she was going upstairs. But yea i think he did it too.
Well, a lot of the men, including the lawyers, have many moments when they treat this whole thing with frivolity. As if his wife was just an object. I'll bet they would have taken it more seriously if it had been the death of a young teenage girl.
Earlier in the day she was decorating outside. She was working in a tree. That is where they think the feathers and wood came from. Plus his son recently said he killed her. He was with his mother Patricia the day she died. She had a heart attack and he didn't call 911. Her son came over and called. He said Peterson just watched her die and waited like 2 hours
Ok so umm I think the owl theory is way out there however I do think the owl feathers may help locate the real murder weapon. For instance a fire poke would actually work as owls can make nests and roost or perch on and in chimneys. So if that had been used or any of the other tools by the fire place could have had owl feathers that floated down the chimney. But also if they had down feather pillows it’s possible somehow owl feathers got mixed in and that is how the owl feathers got in her hair.
That’s what i was thinking too. Needed to look for any outbuildings where an owl might roost too. Search for a weapon there. What if it was a “stick” (or branch) from outside. Easily returned and missed amongst the rest of the debris in the yard.
I don't believe there was any weapon. I believe after choking her (throat injury in the medical examiner's report) he bashed her head against the door sill (IIRC some of her hair was wedged in some of the splintered wood there) & then bashed it on the stairs, thus creating a lot of blood. It took me watching the Netflix doc twice to realize this cuz I just couldn't figure out where did the weapon go and why was there no "cast off" blood splatter near the ceiling? Easy, there was no weapon, he was trying to create the perfect murder and get away with it. Kind of smart, no weapon to worry about getting rid of, no weapon means none of his DNA to be found on it. Same thing he did when he murdered Elizabeth before.
@@emelphick4742 great observation. The fact that Elizabeth died virtually the same way is what solidifies this for me. Like what are the odds 2 women die the exact same way and the common thread is the Michael. Yes, there’s a degree of reasonable doubt bc there’s no tangible murder weapon but still
Just my anecdotal $ 0.02: I’m about the same age now as Kathleen was when she died. I have fallen down the wooden staircase in my house (thanks to my cat!) and I was bruised, but not bloody. I could see a laceration or two depending on how one falls, but not the amount of blood in her crime scene and no way could there have been as many lacerations as Kathleen had. My grandfather, who was in his late 70’s, fell down his staircase (thanks to his dog!) and he broke both of his wrists, but there was no blood. Despite our apparently homicidal pets, NO BLOOD and NO LACERATIONS. I just cannot buy the defense case at all.
I have fallen down my basement stairs, bc of my cats, lol. I didn't bleed with. Very bruised. & They are solid bare wooden stairs, 13 of them with concrete at the bottom.
i fell down my basement stairs when i was 8 because my sock caught on a loose screw and yea i had some bruises, maybe a bump on the head, but there was no *blood*.
@@SuperSpamGuy I fell down concrete stairs once while running down them because I was late, and I landed on my back against the angel of the stairs... was painful and I had a bruised and swollen tailbone, had to get xrays done but apart from the bruising and swelling, there was nothing else. No bleeding certainly
Also there would most likely be evidence of the bird in the house. Like things knocked over or messed up. If you’ve ever seen a bird inside you know how wild they get. They just don’t fly straight out the door without touching anything especially not after fatally attacking someone.
There is so much evidence twisted by professionals and youtubers to push their bias. The only real fact is that the SBI and Deaver f-ed up all the evidence and now we will never know what happened and what actually happened to Kathleen.
Also, I think the problem with this case is our unwillingness to admit we just don't know what happened. Does he seem like he COULD be a killer? Sure. Is there a chance he's not? Yes. We may just never know. We are getting stuck because we keep wanting to assume we know things we don't.
I, too, have Von Willeberand’s disease, and while it requires a little extra care and monitoring, it is not the same as having hemophilia. It is one of the more minor clotting disorders, so claiming that VWD contributing significantly to the first wife’s death seems quite…suspicious to me.
I too have VWB and women can not be hemophiliac disease. I’ve had this since birth bleeding extremely easy… When did they exam the hair and find the owl feathers? If it was before the trial why didn’t the defence use it? When I watched the Netflix he was miked up in the bathroom and they caught him implicating himself I believe… I was very brain dead after watching it lol lol.. am I wrong abt that? Also Emily all 4 of my children have VWB. If you have children or siblings they should also be tested.
@@luvtocook6881 women can have hemophilia too. It is just highly unlikely. That means either both X chromosomes are affect or one is affect and the other is just missing or not working.
Did she just say “Alford, Schmalford”? 😂 Definitely not something you would usually hear as a rebuttal against someone’s attempt to get out of jail for murder.
It was the wife’s sisters statement, not a rebuttal. After someone pleads guilty in court, family members are allowed to give statements. It’s the court’s way of letting the family say their peace.
I think she found out he was cheating and threatened to leave him. & she was the main breadwinner considering that his writing or whatever wasn’t going nowhere. So he lost his shit and killed her. Considering he never got caught the first time so he staged it like his previous murder.

Anytime I hear 'perfect couple' 'soul mates' etc alarm bells ring
It does seem like a lot of this stuff happens to "perfect" families.

I heard he wanted the documentary made and had control of the narrative.
They weren't killed the same way.
Your right he so suspicious to me that he saying it wasn't he fault
You raise some good points
I believe the owl theory fits all evidence best.
I read a possible explanation for the owl feathers somewhere along the way:
Birds perch on chimneys -> feather fragments fall down chimney -> microscopic particles end up on fire poker.
So, the owl feathers could potentially support the fire poker theory.
He did it. No doubt whatsoever.
I think this is more likely than him printing them out himself.
This is so smart. He probably threw them in the drawer after killing her so the police wouldn’t come across it. Girl you need to go to law school !

Naw, go ahead and stay, it’s most welcome.
I just don’t think there was enough evidence for or against, so I’m still very undecided on if he did it or not
"A grumpy owl", awww.. that made me smile. It's evident you love them, and loved training them. Very sweet💗
I have a genuine question for you then! If you are attacked by such a large bird and presumably scramble to get it off, would there not be a ton of big feathers and down left after the attack? Both at the scene and for example in the hair of the attacked person?
@@catrine982 that's what i've been saying!! how are there MICROSCOPIC owl feathers on her hair but not actual feathers around her...
I've always said it was like bad acting. I think he attacked her & waited for her to die
He didn’t see battle in Nam. He made all that up.
he didnt kill her earlier in the evening as she was still alive after she supposedly fell
Exactly!
(Edit/Updated theory)
Someone pointed out that his actions are theorised to be premeditated because of how similar Elizabeth's and Kathleen's murders were.
That’s a very plausible theory actually !
That makes a lot of sense!
I like this one. 👌 I'm glad you tied in the owl feathers in a plausible way.
I know this case well. What I can never get past is that statistically speaking 1 man having 2 women in his life meet an untimely end in nearly the exact same way is improbable. Plus he had a secret double life which I remember being very scandalous as the trial was going on. Besides the owl theory is very very unlikely.
The owl theory sounds too crazy 🦉
@@NobodyUndefined I have always believed the owl theory even though I know it’s an unpopular opinion.

This entire case was a mess, but I lost it when they brought in the owl 😭😭😭😭
Why are they not focusing on the son who was there for everything but refused to talk to the police???
He wasn’t there. He showed up after being out with a friend.
It can’t be some sick coincidence that two women in his life died the SAME way.......
Right... and it's not like a common death.
I was a bit torn until I heard about the other person falling too… there’s no way that’s coincidence!
Wow 😮

Greetings From Florida 🏄♀️ hope your friend is okay now ! Thanks 4/ sharing 👍
Omg such a good point
Another weird thing about the cheating is that at the very end of the documentary Micheal alludes to the fact that if he could go back he would have told her the truth.. so he contradicts himself... there is no way she knew!
Lots of people have open marriages after divorcing someone for cheating on them. Cheating is a violation of trust. An open marriage isn’t.
@@thehousespouse No... but many people close to Kathleen said that'd be a dealbreaker for her.

Something I can’t shake is that her lacerations were vertical, the stairs run horizontal. How could you get vertical lacerations from stairs? 🤔
wait that’s so smart
The bruises she received on her arms were also vertical.
She may have likely fallen down when he attacked her with her head parallel to the stairs, he grabs the sides of her head and smashes it against the edge of the stairs. That's how I also think she ended up with her own hair in her hands, she was also grabbing on trying to fight him off.
Blunt force ripping not a laceration, like if you drop a watermelon on the ground how it tears. That is what they said did it.

How was there ONLY microscopic evidence of A N Y animal attack with fur or feathers this is unlikely.

The daughters freak me out that they are ok with dad cheating on mom. Saying he was a great husband and that he loved her. Bull crap🤮
I have always felt like the son had something to do with the incident I think they did it together who knows 🤷♀️
The blood was never confirmed dry. Dont you remember how Deaver and many more experts on the case lied and destroyed evidence
There is NO WAY that much blood is caused from a fall down the stairs. Nope, not believing it.
Exactly like wtffff
The blood came from wounds on her head. And yes, wounds on the scalp can cause insane amounts of blood loss.
UP the stairs - even less likely
You can't say there's no way. If you hit your head or different parts of your body in the right way you will cause a massive amount of bleeding. Is it more likely to be something else probably but you can't just discount staircase because you don't want to believe it's possible to cause that much damage. Trust me falls down the stairs don't look like they do in the movies.
Two women connected to this man died in almost the exact same way and he was the last person to see both of them... If there's a pattern, believe it.
Proof > pattern
The prosecution simply fucked up the case so bad that they forced themselves to let him go free.
His first wife died in 2021 and he was with her when she had her heart attack. So it is 3 women now.
I'd like to see a statistician calculate the odds of being on the scene for two different women dying by falling down the stairs with blood everywhere. Or being fatally attacked by an odds. Surely both are miniscule.
Michael's adopted daughters have lost both their biological parents and their adopted mother.....so sad for them.
They are both very strange imo
He killed her as she was going upstairs because this is when he would have lost ultimate control, based on what they fought about a few mins. before.
Or she has an owl feather hat
The owl theory was fkn my brain for a minute, so I had to check the comments and your counterarguments sound very reasonable. Thank you :-D

Thats what I figured too
That sounds more unlikely than the owl attack.
Yes
It’s tricky because a spinal tap was done and is confirmed she died of an aneurysm and had a pre existing condition

Woah this makes so much sense 😳🤯
Regarding the neck injury, she did have a known neck injury just months before her death. I think including this in the case is so odd because her neck would definitely still be healing.

the owl theory is quite interesting, I will admit. highly unlikely? yes. impossible? no. the odd thing to me is how the micro owl feathers got on her hair, but as some previous comments mentioned, that could have been transferred from a variety of places. so while the theory does have merit, I don't think an owl is to blame for her death.

They did test the blow poke

You'll make it.
They needed "Dexter" to explain the blood spatter! I think it is possible he broke her hyoid while holding her neck and later her hair to bang her head against the stairs, maybe just scraping the stair above to cause the lacerations. Even if skull fracture is typical in such cases, he could have banged her head with less force because he was in a rage and was just trying to "make her shut up".
case closed. Chars cracked it everyone! lol gtfo
Not even remotely possible considering the total lack of brain/skull injury
The Owl theory is interesting but let’s face it. Michael is so guilty it’s not funny. To have two deaths occur in the same manner of course he is guilty of both murders. I have watched the Netflix documentary and just thought he was arrogant and narcissistic. He is a horrible person.

I live in the same neighborhood as Michael Peterson and see him around town. The owls in our neighborhood aren't aggressive by any means. We hear them at night all of the time, but you're lucky to actually see one. Zero chance it was an owl.
😯
True!
Omg imagine this was all the sons fault and his dad was just covering for him Bc of the debit he was in oop
Also curious, did anyone ask the son if the front door was unlocked when he got home (assuming he opened the front door) as that could be added into the “break in” theory. Just so much going on here, even the owls are in on it now! I do feel like his son may have helped him
I’ve always wondered if maybe he was in on it or if Michael is covering for him 🤨
@@WallysGirl123 the owl theory is incredibly interesting like the feathers and everything is definitely VERY SUS. I’m sorry but the owl just didn’t do this in this case!
I was attacked by an owl once but my wounds weren't even close to Kathleen's wounds. Not close.
If that's the case there would've surely been feathers.. right? Or some kind of animal presence even if small.

The other murder being connected to him is what makes that theory unbelievable to me.
the theory says it attacked her outside and she ran inside to escape from it
Even if she was attacked outside, it still doesn’t explain the amount of blood at the scene. Considering the evidence the theory seems random to me. Owls can be aggressive but in this instance it seems very unlikely that an owl had anything to do with it.
If she was attacked and made it inside, she would have tried to get him to help her , don’t buy it at all
@@springsogourne i believe he was still outside though. I believe they think she got attacked on the way in and then ran inside afterwards.
Ditto. Serial killer. He also helped the neighbor in Germany down the stairs to her death.
Yeah, at least now he knows. RIP Patricia
Damn. Well said
That’s what i was thinking too.
