    In this video I go over a simple method for creating day for night color grades. It gives you control over each shot, but does the complex stuff for you. The Dusk for Night settings even key out street lights. I've been having fun with these for a while now.

    I haven’t even learned how to edit my videos yet or even have edit software. But this video certainly grabs my attention to get myself a kick in the ass to go purchase a edit program for dummies. I hope I can find something that I can learn fairly easily. Great video

      Love your tips, very intuitive. I am not able to export in 4k with FCC pro due to my macs inability but can in Imovie. Any chance you can do a couple of little vids on iMovie, luts and how to install them? I'm missing out but can't afford to upgrade yet.

      grandchancellor strange that FCPX won’t export 4k! I don’t think iMovie accepts LUTs. Have you tried the free version of Davinci Resolve?

    This is awesome! What setting would you recommend for the phantom 4 pro in D-Log? Now it has a fix ISO of 500. Do you have a Neat video noise reduction profile for this?

    • @thefilmpoets
      @thefilmpoets  6 лет назад +3

      For phantom's I've always liked -1,-1, -1. Working on noise profiles for the p4 - but it really only needs it at 3200. It's very clean.

    Hi Matt - How do i use the Day for Night LUTStack in Davinci Resolve lite? Ive added your folder to the DR LUT folder so now how do get the Color, Contrast, and Light Level to work together like you showed in your video (using the sliders)? Or do i have to create a separate node for each effect? Sorry - I'm new to this video editing and learning as i go.

    • @thefilmpoets
      @thefilmpoets  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Peter, you'd just add three serial nodes by hitting opt+s, and apply each LUT to them. You could save that as a power grade for future use to save time. Thanks!

    Hi! i was wondering you mentioned the LUT stack will work on premier pro as well, but when i follow the link it says its for Neat, are there instructions on how to use the LUT stack in premier pro

    • @thefilmpoets
      @thefilmpoets  6 лет назад

      Hey, can you please tell me which link you're talking about so I can fix it?
      The LUTstack instructions for premiere come in a pdf when you download it. It's super easy because premiere allows effects presets to contain LUTs, so there is a special premiere pro preset that is preloaded with each LUT in the proper order. All you have to do is adjust them for color, then contrast, then light level.
      This is the correct link : geni.us/ZPbm

    You've mentioned that the purpose of +1 sharpness setting for Mavic Pro is to disable the automatic noise reduction used when sharpness is set to 0 or below. That, as well as the possibility of a different noise profile between Mavic Pro and Mavic Pro Platinum, makes me wonder whether the in-drone settings and the profiles you recommended also work for Mavic Pro Platinum?

    • @thefilmpoets
      @thefilmpoets  6 лет назад

      The Platinum is the same sensor and camera system. No change as far as I can tell, same goes for the phantom 4 obsidian, it's just an exterior refresh with minor design changes.

  • @robertoazzara5266
    @robertoazzara5266 6 лет назад

    Thank you for all! But it works with Mavic Pro Platinum?

    • @thefilmpoets
      @thefilmpoets  6 лет назад

      Yes this most of this was shot with the Mavic, and the LUTStack will work with any camera.

    • @thefilmpoets
      @thefilmpoets  6 лет назад +2

      Themiya Meemaduma I like -1,-1,-1

    • @thefilmpoets
      @thefilmpoets  6 лет назад +2

      Themiya Meemaduma d log has about an extra stop of highlight headroom. D cinlike is still nice and looks great. You would just dial in less contrast for a day for night grade shot in d cinelike.

    your techniques might be useful but to my eye there's no detail, no contrast and everything just looks digital murkiness. the traditional hollywood technique for shooting day for night (black/white) was to use a series of stacked kodak filters. (have plenty of those from my film days) then they would printing down and towards blue to achieve a moonlit sequence. using color is tricky. however, filming was always during the broad daylight.day. the sun doubled for the moon and reflectors/arcs diffused for actor key/back lights. these techniques were never used at sunset or twilight or after dark. why? one reason being because actors require multiple takes and around magic hour you'll never have enough time to complete the scene. their are exceptions, of course. the other trick is NEVER show the sky...sometimes grads were used to fight this. the overexposed sky is dead giveaway you're shooting day for night.
