In this video I go over a simple method for creating day for night color grades. It gives you control over each shot, but does the complex stuff for you. The Dusk for Night settings even key out street lights. I've been having fun with these for a while now.
Music by Chet Faker and Classixx.

So happy to see this video up, thank you for all the great advice and tools.
what a breath of fresh air, no waffle just great helpful advice! Much appreciated and very grateful.
Cutting straight to the point. Subscribed.
I just found your channel and i'm really blown away by your work. You deserve way more attention. Keep on working! I'm looking up for your future projects :) Greetings from Germany !
It is so good to watch your videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thank you for making really great videos!
Great video man! Definitely gonna try this!
This is awesome, thanks Matt!
Thanks Jason!
Very intelligent and impressive. Thanks!
Thanks another very interesting video!
I haven’t even learned how to edit my videos yet or even have edit software. But this video certainly grabs my attention to get myself a kick in the ass to go purchase a edit program for dummies. I hope I can find something that I can learn fairly easily. Great video
Great video, I have been waiting on this one and you certainly did not disappoint! Thanks for the tips!
Thanks, this one was fun!
Love your tips, very intuitive. I am not able to export in 4k with FCC pro due to my macs inability but can in Imovie. Any chance you can do a couple of little vids on iMovie, luts and how to install them? I'm missing out but can't afford to upgrade yet.
grandchancellor strange that FCPX won’t export 4k! I don’t think iMovie accepts LUTs. Have you tried the free version of Davinci Resolve?
Great video!
Thank you so much very helpfull. Did some day 2 night conversions before but as never really happy with the result
Glad to hear it. I would have loved to have done a full tutorial on manually grading day for night, but it's different for every shot and very inconsistent. The LUTStack is so much easier!
Awesome!
Love your work!!
ModestReaction thank you so much.
Great tips/explanation for dusk shooting...my favorite time with the P4Pro. Just subscribed...look forward to seeing more...thanks
P4 Pro rocks!
Great song
Great stuff man! Thanks!
thanks Kevin
Thanks!
Nice one
Whoaaa FilmPoets makes tutorial! I still waiting your tutorial about color grading since you used Canon 6D.. 😀
Genius
Amazing work Matt, thumbs up for Chet Faker!
Thank you. I was going through a Chet Faker phase as I was making this and the mood seemed to fit. Appreciate you watching.

I bought the "Day for Night" LUTs ! it's really good ;)
Enjoy!
tuyệt vời quá bạn!
Great video and awesome Packs. Just bought the mavic noise reduction pack but I was wondering how to I use the profiles and presets. I know how to use the luts just not familiar with the other files
Hey Jordan, you'd need to see the Neat Video tutorial here : ruclips.net/video/s_e0Yd8hGYM/видео.html
This is awesome! What setting would you recommend for the phantom 4 pro in D-Log? Now it has a fix ISO of 500. Do you have a Neat video noise reduction profile for this?
For phantom's I've always liked -1,-1, -1. Working on noise profiles for the p4 - but it really only needs it at 3200. It's very clean.
The Film Poets thanks for the tip!
Don't forgtet you can also add a small gradient ramp to the sky to darken it a lil more...
Hey The Film Poets, what's the song playing at 2:00?
Hi Matt, will this work with the new mavic 2 pro--great video as well
Yes, this is a creative LUT that's designed to work with any footage. Just dial in each setting until you're happy.
Hi Matt - How do i use the Day for Night LUTStack in Davinci Resolve lite? Ive added your folder to the DR LUT folder so now how do get the Color, Contrast, and Light Level to work together like you showed in your video (using the sliders)? Or do i have to create a separate node for each effect? Sorry - I'm new to this video editing and learning as i go.
Hey Peter, you'd just add three serial nodes by hitting opt+s, and apply each LUT to them. You could save that as a power grade for future use to save time. Thanks!
Will these work with lightroom?
Awesome video! What lens did you use at 2:30?? Where you are controlling with the joystick
That's the new canon 85mm 1.4IS - at 4k on the 1dxII.
The Film Poets did u shoot at 1.4?
uh.. yea!
Hi! i was wondering you mentioned the LUT stack will work on premier pro as well, but when i follow the link it says its for Neat, are there instructions on how to use the LUT stack in premier pro
Hey, can you please tell me which link you're talking about so I can fix it?
The LUTstack instructions for premiere come in a pdf when you download it. It's super easy because premiere allows effects presets to contain LUTs, so there is a special premiere pro preset that is preloaded with each LUT in the proper order. All you have to do is adjust them for color, then contrast, then light level.
This is the correct link : geni.us/ZPbm

You've mentioned that the purpose of +1 sharpness setting for Mavic Pro is to disable the automatic noise reduction used when sharpness is set to 0 or below. That, as well as the possibility of a different noise profile between Mavic Pro and Mavic Pro Platinum, makes me wonder whether the in-drone settings and the profiles you recommended also work for Mavic Pro Platinum?
The Platinum is the same sensor and camera system. No change as far as I can tell, same goes for the phantom 4 obsidian, it's just an exterior refresh with minor design changes.
Thank you for all! But it works with Mavic Pro Platinum?
Yes this most of this was shot with the Mavic, and the LUTStack will work with any camera.
Thank you so much 👌🏻
Can you do the tutorial is tech how to use your Mavic noise reduction profiles? I already to buy it.
wesley1wan sure, I’ve got two of them : ruclips.net/video/om-k4McrveA/видео.html
And for lowlight - ruclips.net/video/s_e0Yd8hGYM/видео.html
But I don't know how to do in premiere pro CC
Neat Video is a plugin and behaves the same in Premiere as it does in FCPX - You can check it out here : geni.us/NeatVideo
Hi, do they work in Filmora?
yes! check youtube for a tutorial on LUTs in filmora
So do I need to buy neat video too for this to use?
Not to use the LUTs, but you do need it if you want to denoise high ISO footage.
The Film Poets okey thanks. Thats sad, I don't want/can't afford neat :/
But thanks for quick answer
sure thing. It's a pro application, so I don't suggest it unless you're making money off of your videos or plan to. Keep it in mind if you grow!
+1 -1 -1 on the phantom 4 pro also ?
No! I almost never suggest in camera sharpening, the mavic is unique. I like -1,-1,-1 - doing a full phantom review now. Thanks!
also see here for the +1 sharpening on the mavic - ruclips.net/video/ZEQvOAsY6ks/видео.html
which software is this ?
Themiya Meemaduma this was FCPX, but it works the same with Premiere.
Thank you for getting back to me. Would you mind telling which setting is best for Phantom 4 Pro ?
I prefer to shoot with d cinelike since the footage aint that muddy to grade. can you tell me whats your opinion about that ? difference between D Cinelike and D Log ?
Themiya Meemaduma I like -1,-1,-1
Themiya Meemaduma d log has about an extra stop of highlight headroom. D cinlike is still nice and looks great. You would just dial in less contrast for a day for night grade shot in d cinelike.
link broken
thank you! I can't believe someone didn't tell me earlier.
that means i get free copy?? :)
moran jaccov hit contact on the page and I’ll set you up. -Matt
yesss thanks :)
your techniques might be useful but to my eye there's no detail, no contrast and everything just looks digital murkiness. the traditional hollywood technique for shooting day for night (black/white) was to use a series of stacked kodak filters. (have plenty of those from my film days) then they would printing down and towards blue to achieve a moonlit sequence. using color is tricky. however, filming was always during the broad daylight.day. the sun doubled for the moon and reflectors/arcs diffused for actor key/back lights. these techniques were never used at sunset or twilight or after dark. why? one reason being because actors require multiple takes and around magic hour you'll never have enough time to complete the scene. their are exceptions, of course. the other trick is NEVER show the sky...sometimes grads were used to fight this. the overexposed sky is dead giveaway you're shooting day for night.
it all looks terrible
Excellent video!
