If you are wearing white clothes and you are on snow ActiveTrack will go koukou (crazy) and won't know what is what. That's why you have the Follow me mode!
Follow me and Active Track are used in different circumstances. "Follow Me" follows the GPS in the controller/device, so use it during instances where you want to track yourself but line of site might become obstructed (walking through patch of trees, driving, etc), basically any time where line of site might get lost for a moment or two where you could loose active visual lock. Active track uses the camera lock so constant line of site is where this mode shines..
Sherwin Alemania that's exactly what I was going to comment. Good video, but BIG difference between the two modes. Active track did NOT replace follow me. Very different modes
I'm just starting out with my Mavic Pro and I'm finding myself watching your tutorial videos more than any other's for several reasons. You're almost robotic in your efficiency and comprehensive coverage of the information, but with a personable geekishness that is endearing. You pack a lot of info into a short time, and I sometimes want you to slow down, but it's no problem putting you on pause for a moment while I digest or replay the video. I expect that your friends have to do that too sometimes lol. Thanks for being a big help in getting me started Billy and keep up the good work bro.
Great Video! This guy knows what he is talking about. Has to be one of the most informative drone videos on YT. Clearly, you have an intimate knowledge of your subject matter. I have been looking for a video like this one ever since the Mavic came out. I knew someone would eventually put on out there, but I was concerned it would be a simple glossing over of all the flight modes. Your video was well put together, well thought out, narrated exceptionally well, you dumbed it down so a 1st grader could understand it, and most of all, it was informative; I actually learned something! Lots of these drone guys put out a video for their egos and they really just want to show you how good of a pilot they think they are. None of that from you. You hit all the high notes and this should be 'must watch' for anyone buying a DJI Drone. Seriously, thanks for such a great video and you now have a loyal fan and subscriber. Thanks again,
The reason for you battling with the gesture mode is because of the gloves you were wearing being the same colour as your jacket and there was no contrast or colour difference between your hands and the background being the jacket.
Dude this was really good. About to go to Patagonia for 7 days and this video is the last thing I'm watching before boarding the plane and not having reception while I'm down there. That being said, it gave me a lot of confidence with these Intelligent Flight Modes... Thanks Billy!
if your in an area where the Mavic will lose you behind bushes or buildings the follow me is way better than track mode. tracking mode will lose you if it loses view of you. in follow it follows the rc signal and not you.
Just ordered my mavic, been waiting to get this thing since it came out. I've been interested in drones for years but this will be my first from DJI, i've watched hundreds of drone videos and tutorials and this was an awesome explanation of all the intelligent flight modes! Can't wait to start flying, subbed!
Billy by far my favorite video of yours. I don’t know how many times I’ve referenced something that I needed help with. I still reference it. Your hard work on this paid off. Kudos !
Good job. Not too much unnecessary talking and gave a lot of information. I watched a few other ones and they just went on and on and on. Thanks for your time.
I've been enjoying the layout and organization of your videos. Clear, organized, and logical explanations, background info when needed... ...all really good stuff and for some reason, seems hard to come by on many others' channels. Keep it up!
follow me mode is very similar to POI. Except where in POI mode you manually choose a gps coordinate to orbit, in follow me mode the coordinate of the POI is the location of your device hosting the DJI app, so as you move and your location changes the coordinate for the POI (which is your device) is updated
Very nice job Billy - this one goes in your Hall of Fame section for sure - probably one of the least used set of capabilities the drone offers and you kept it comprehensive yet concise.
Great video Billy. Super helpful. Just purchased my P4P last week and I have a shoot on the 7 mile bridge in Marathon, FL this coming Sunday. Filming some maintenance trucks traveling ~40 mph on the bridge. Gonna watch this video about 5 more times along side my own field test. TY!
excellent vid Billy..I have been covering yacht races for 3 years now with my old war horse P2..very hostile environment for launch flight and recovery.. just moved to P4pro+ and the options and opportunities are exciting and intimidating ...your vid is great I only have to make sure I can hang it together in 1m waves and 20knot winds from a 20ft rib.
i'm not bob but i own a P3 and i've been hand catching it since the second day. Those skids are terrible... After watching it bounce twice i said NEVER AGAIN. Plus there's just something I enjoy about seeing those last few seconds of the video where the drone is coming down to me and I just raise my hand and grab it. Very satisfying
As a teacher that just received one for classroom uses this video is a fantastic help. How did you record your screen so I can use my flying for instructional purposes? Thanks.
Great Video Billy..I thought I saw some parts that you used earlier but this is by far one of the best videos you have made..You did a excellent job of explaining the controls and that is what I needed now..Having a good display on screen was helpful in following your description of each section..This is a good timing for me as I'm ordering the Pro-4+ with the F.S.V3-hd goggles 1st of week so this will give me a good starter lesson..Thanks Man..
Excellent explanation of modes. I have a Mavic Pro Platinum. This video has helped me understand how to use the intelligent modes, what the differences are, and what benefits some have over others. Well done!
Thanks for your discussions of Intelligent Flight Modes. I would be interested in a video that explains how a videographer checks out a scene, plans "takes" using various techniques such as reveals, and then decides which flight mode to use for that take. It's almost like dynamically designing "rails" for camera movements but provides so much more freedom. I feel so many of us have the toolkit, but we don't know how to plan for and use it.
Great tutorial Billy. I am new to the drone community (P4 P+) and you are one of my top 3 'go to' guys for how to get the job done. You have a great channel!! Cheers, Tom Heller
Thank you for the time in making this video. I will be watching it many times to absorb all the features. Thank you also for your other videos regarding camera settings and another dealing with ND filters. You have made my flying experience with the P4P more pleasureable
Hey Billy, what a great video!!! Thank u very much. I have been waiting for over 2 months now for a real explanation in how our phantom 4 pro intelligent flight modes actively work. U did a wonderful job. Cheers!!!
I’m trying to use my drone to track my car, but I don’t want to use follow me as the results are not great. I want to make the drone fly a prescribed route and I’ll just drive under it’s flight path as it goes about that route. So waypoints seems to be the solution. However what happens if I’m in the car driving with the controller (as I’m on my own) and the drone whilst flying waypoints loses connection to the controller? Does it just return to home? Thanks
Excellent video. great job. One thing that goes wrong in all technology is that an individual will come in when is already old news. Many videos on youTube try to give advice to "beginners" and then start talking about technical stuff and dishing out acronyms sort of to impress people with their knowledge but actually do nothing to teach. People who teach need to understand that beginners don't know jack they need to be taught what is obvious to the teacher. Thanks for the video very helpful to a real beginner like me.
Was looking for something that explained the modes on a Phantom 4 Pro I'm expecting in a few days. This was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Saved and subscribed. Keep up the awesome work.
Greetings. I ran across a gentleman flying a Mavic Pro a few days ago and decided I needed one. Saw your video on RUclips and I've got to say your presentation is straight forward and informative. Liked and Sub'd. Good job!
I've recently got a Mavic pro and had no prior experience with drones. I naively decided to not watch any tutorials except how to set it up and get flying because I'm the kind of guy who likes to just learn by doing. Its going good but I can definitely see where I'm making mistakes but its been a sh!t load of fun. Then came across your videos and can see why I should of took the time to learn first because its a lot to take in. Thanks Billy your videos have been really helpful!!
Nice video! Quick addition: Follow me is different than Active Track in the sense that uses the phone's GPS, while Active Track uses the drone's camera to detect you. That's why when you dropped the controller to the ground it stopped following you (it was following your phone, which you dropped to the ground)
MAN That was COOL ASF!! I'm about to use the heck outta waypoint and draw modes. I wasn't using draw correctly and decide not to ever use it again until this video. Great Job bro!!
Well done! It helps a great deal. Nice that you “Time-stamped” it at the beginning! Again, very well done! Thanks! Improvement opportunity would be to slow down the pace a bit. To fully “get” everything I found myself having to back up the video and replay a section several times.
Great info and very thoroughly covered subject! Thank you. One challenge I have is keeping up with you as you go from one section to another or refer to specific areas to click on. It's almost like I need to see a pointer to go from one place to another as you refer to them. I often have to pause and reverse to catch the info.
Great video, it keep going back to it. It have question, not sure where it goes best, it might have been answered previoisly, my apologies for asking again. I would like to fly where there are big cliffs 1000 foot and bigger. If at the top at 200 feet an fly over to the cliff with a sudden drop of 1000 feet, does the drone stay level or drop 800 feet. Same if you drive in follow mode. As the elevation drops or raises if going up, does the drone keep the same altitude of the starting point and follow maintining the altitude. Thank you!
Hey Billy... need help w/ Waypoints... I know how to set up a mission, but I want to rename the mission once saved... can this be done? Does it have to be done prior to saving the mission or can you go back in and rename afterwards? FYI... I'm building a 633 seat performing arts building on a high school campus and want to do weekly fly-bys using the waypoints feature on the P4Pro.
Billy, there are a ton of sites out there, but I seem to 'gravitate' towards yours more than the others. Your presentations are well thought out, well presented and to the point. Love your work.! BTW I am now awaiting my very first drone to arrive in the mail ( Phantom 4 } and your videos helped me in that decision, thanks.
Very good and well presented, thank you, I only use some of these modes, but you have given me an incentive to try others, probably not Gesture. Yes I like Tripod, but for Waypoints, it has to be Litchi, I understand why DJI has required you to prefly a waypoint mission, it is safer, but Litchi is much more fun. Thanks
Great video Billy. My drone has been sitting in my closet for a while and I thought I would get it out and experiment with the intelligent flight modes. Your video was very helpful. Wish me luck!
Great Video - very helpful ! WOuld you happen to know if there is a mode of function whereby you can lock the gimbal on a particular point in a frame and the move the drone towards , away above or around that point and the gimbal will stay locked on the point? Currently if you have to fly toward a point of interest e.g. a house - you have to use the rocker (mavic pro) controller to time the pan of the gimbal to manually keep the point of interest centered. Would be great if there was an automated way to this so you could focus on the flying and the gimbal would lock itself? Many thanks in advance !
Thanks Billy for the explanation. Very well defined and easy to understand. As for those who hated the video, why? I am a noob when it comes time to flying my Mavic but any detailed info like in this video is welcome IMHO. Oh well. To each his own. :)
Great video man. Been using course lock quit a bit and didn't even know about the reset heading button. I've been hitting "hide" immediately after "apply". Never saw it. Thanks!
Another great P4P tutorial.. Saved me tons of time researching the Flight Modes. Thanks again. If only I could tap the screen to set all my waypoints rather than having to fly the route to set them .
Billy...nice video...thanks. You ask "why would anyone use follow me as opposed to active track?" It's because "active track" isn't perfect...it can lose track of what it's following, "follow me" almost certainly will NOT lose track of what it's following, because it is following the GPS position of the phone/tablet (follow me isn't trying to visually recognize the object being tracked, it's simply pointing at the GPS position of the phone/tablet). Also, as I understand it, if a person has an iPhone 6 or greater, "follow me" will use the barometric altitude being reported by the phone, and climb or descend if the remote/phone climbs or descends. Active track will not. So follow me does indeed have advantages, and there are very good reasons to use follow me as opposed to active track.
Hey Billy---- I think the difference between Active Track & Follow Me mode, is that Active Track uses visuals to track it's subject, while follow me uses the gps coordinates of your remote. you need to have the remote on you in follow me mode, and it will track you even if you are out of it's line of site. That's how I understand it at least
Hi, how can I exit the course lock from Dji Go 4 and phantom 4? I found it less intuitive than Dji Go 3.x, today , I have pressed C1 and C2 without luke, and finaly I had to change from P to ATTI to escape course lock. thanks
A lot of drone footage starts with the drone facing it's pilot, and it ascends while moving backwards with the gimbal locked on the pilot. It's a very cool effect I see all the time, but trying to do ti manually is very difficult--- it requires controlling ascension, backward motion, and steady gimbal all at once. with tap fly, can you set it to ascend backwards by tapping the screen? or do you have to hold the throttle up for the ascend to work? Is this the best mode to use for getting this kind of footage? or would some other intelligent flight mode help with this better?
Billy bad ass, GREAT VIDEO!!! that was far more then I was looking for, but I would if got to asking what it was all for at some point. I'm glad I jus watched it here... Excellent excellent job!!

It didn't recognize you because you had on a dark coat and dark gloves..
If you are wearing white clothes and you are on snow ActiveTrack will go koukou (crazy) and won't know what is what. That's why you have the Follow me mode!
@Chazz Decker There is a mode to slow down the gimbal speed in your settings
Follow me and Active Track are used in different circumstances. "Follow Me" follows the GPS in the controller/device, so use it during instances where you want to track yourself but line of site might become obstructed (walking through patch of trees, driving, etc), basically any time where line of site might get lost for a moment or two where you could loose active visual lock. Agree with this one.
Sherwin Alemania that's exactly what I was going to comment. Good video, but BIG difference between the two modes. Active track did NOT replace follow me. Very different modes
If I use the Follow Me mode, will it adjust altitude as I walk up a hill?
bkeene12 Based on all comments I've read the answer is no, it will not do this in "Follow Me"
can anyone get follow me mode working witht the DJI 3 standard +phone7? Since the update it doesnt seem to work

+snlexa Thank you! Will do!
Follow me is good for when you go into trees or shadow and active track loses sight of your shape.
Good point, I hadn't thought about that.
ThePsychicSasquatch but you do need to have the rc on you right?
yes. unless you're using WIFI mode on supported models
follow me mode is very similar to POI. Best Walkthrough on RUclips! Many thanks for the detailed explanations.

Best RUclipsr I have seen yet all because you mentioned the date, and the firmware version.
Still very helpful in 2021 as it saved me time knowing which modes are worth it. Thanks for the great video.

Great video Billy. My drone has been sitting in my closet for a while and I thought I would get it out and experiment with the intelligent flight modes. Your video was very helpful. Wish me luck!

Great overview. Thanks for sharing! I think I finally get the active track mode.
Very instructive, along with every other P4-pro related video you've made, thanks! ;)
You're welcome!
Thanks!
One of the most thoughtful and well put together tutorials online. Thank you for all the work and effort 🙏
Bravo! I"m new to the Mavic Pro and have had a hard time finding instructions. This video was perfect and very well put together. Thanks!
+Marc-Paul Lee Thank you Marc!
Straight to the point - no nonsense. Very useful. Thanks!
Another great P4P tutorial.. Saved me tons of time researching the Flight Modes.
Thanks again.
If only I could tap the screen to set all my waypoints rather than having to fly the route to set them .
+lasersbee Agreed. Wish that was a feature, maybe in the future. Thanks for the comment!
I'm a rank novice. I find your videos eloquent. Thank you!
Just Bought a Mavic Pro and this Video really helped me understand the intelligent flight modes, Great Work
A very in depth explanation of each mode. Thank you.
Chuck
Thank you! I was needing this video!
Very informative, well presented, and certainly explains the differences in flight modes. Great job.
Thanks man. Appreciate your hard work. The fog is getting clearer thanks to you !
Excellent coverage of a demanding number of features. A very informative and enjoyable presentation.
Great video. Covered all the content well, thanks for taking the time to put it together.
+Brian Weaver Thanks for the comment Brian!
Hi, how can I exit the course lock from Dji Go 4 and phantom 4? I found it less intuitive than Dji Go 3.x, today , I have pressed C1 and C2 without luke, and finaly I had to change from P to ATTI to escape course lock. thanks
You can exit course lock by tapping the red "X" button on the left side of the screen.
I did, but it appears to me it was still locked. Several times and nothing. With Dji Go 3.x it was so easy to start and end. I will try again. Thanks
Outstanding job explaining the flight modes. THE best source of information I've found yet! Thank you!
+Themightymoze No problem!
Cool video man!!! This is exactly what I did need to see prior to my next test flight!!! awesome!
+MartinTheVlogger Thanks!
Nice, clear, easy and dirrect to the point guidline. Bravo salut dude.
Great video! I appreciate how easy you explained each mode in detail.
+Riley Strickland Thanks Riley!

Great video.. Also, Your Dad seems to be a great builder of beautiful homes. 😀👍
