Hello Tom, want to add (correct) a couple of points in your video. Speaking as a long time working filmmaker it is not a good idea to leave the camera in Auto White Balance. The user should either set it to the appropriate lighting condition (sunny, cloudy etc) or set a manual white balance, this prevents headaches later in post in colour correction. Unless you're shooting entirely the Phantom, filmmakers will usually use more than one camera (which will be set to 1 region mostly). Leaving the camera in NTSC does NOT help PAL timelines.. As you will mix frame rates. Though this can be done (e.g in FCPX) it does alter playback speed of the video.... This is not good practice unless it's deliberate.
+FCPWHAT As mentioned before: I always use the AWB with the Phantom series and never had any problems. And don't tell me I'm not experienced enough.
Next to that I'm using several Canon DSLRs, a Panasonic MFT camera and a Blackmagic Production Camera. Even though I'm in a PAL country, I have them all set to NTSC with 29.976fps.
I film everything with either 24fps (cinelike productions) or 30fps (everything else).
At the ground, when filming in NTSC, I use safe shutter speeds and know my gear very well and know how to avoid flickering.
I do not present any official rules, I talk about my personal favorite settings. And yes, they work.
And no, most users like to capture aerials only, while only some combine them with normal camera shots.
Totally agree, DO NOT use NTSC 30fps in European regions if you intend to share your content on commercial TVs over HDMI. For Europe/Australia and much of South East Asia stick with either PAL 24fps or 25fps. The 24fps frame rate is what you would expect in a typical movie theatre, whereas the 25fps is what you would actually get on your broadcast television channel (I.e. 25fps Progressive of 50Hz Interlaced). In PAL regions, simply stick with 24/25 fps :)
If you use auto balance you don't know anything about video... it makes no sense if you shoot in Log and then use AW... realy, you are telling a lot of things that are wrong...
Try panning to/from the sun with Auto WB and see what happens. Also, try capturing fireworks at night with auto WB. You'll have wasted your time if cinematography is important to you as you'll have images where color temp and tint will be changing throughout your clip. So, if and only if lighting is relatively constant throughout your clip should you consider Auto WB if cinematography is important to you.
What is mode 4:2:0 or 4:0:0 for UHD and FullHD? What is 8-bit or 10-bit color?

Hi Tom. I downloaded a movie in 4 k from phantom 4 in to my iPad mini 4 and when I click play does not work. What I am doing wrong? Please help. Tony
Tony Drone video, iPad doesn't support 4K video. Hardly anything does
As a cinematographer looking to buy a Phantom 4, the first thing that hit me is why you would suggest to set the camera to NTSC and 30fps. That is very misleading as not everyone will want to shoot at that frame rate and it will be dependent on the project and possibly inter-cutting other camera footage with the Phantom footage. For instance I have shot some material on my Sony XDCAM in 25fps, I would also shoot the Phantom material in 25fps.
Also shooting in NTSC mode in a European country may mean you may get a flickering / strobing effect on street lamps, traffic lights etc. This is due to the frequency of the oscillations of alternating current (AC) in an electric power grid. its 50hz for Europe and 60hz for the US and some other regions. You should amend your description to take these factors into account.
Color setting will depend on how much post production work the footage will go through. D-LOG is great for those looking to bring their own look to the footage in the way of color grading. For a finished look which needs no post production, you would choose one of the other modes.
if you know everything about this stuff: Can you make a video about it?
I did read thousand different things about fps and all that stuff..
+Arkitekture Yes I agree with you there. 24FPS is more cinematic too. TBH I don't think Tom really knows a great deal what he is talking about here. His advice about leaving WB on auto was a big negative for me - set WB to the conditions and then it is fixed. There's nothing worse than watching footage taken on a camera set to auto, hunting about and switching setting half way through a shot. Even worse trying to edit such footage. Set it and stick with it. If the light changes while filming, fix it in post. In fact, post is everything now days - use the camera to catch the light, then do the film work in post, and providing you got things pretty spot on while shooting, you should be able to make everything good in the final - but not if it was set to auto, and was constantly changing!
Tom, your videos are the best Phantom info-series I've found on RUclips yet. Thanks for the informative content you provide. The only other thing I would mention is the DJI PNG clean up tool that DJI released. It really helps reduce the noise from the Sony sensor.
Being a RUclips video creator I can appreciate how much work you put in to making these helpful videos and I'm sure it hurts when the professional film makers make comments about your mistakes people need to keep in mind that these videos are not for the professionals but for people learning basics that being said if I may criticize you on something the leave donation part of your videos are a big negative. Keep up the good work
OH... MY.... GOD!
I can't believe how much time you just saved me with your P4 videos. Making a donation right now. You are awesome. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Thank you for the input. Your video has been most helpful. I love your settings choices and I'm currently using them with success and satisfaction. Your the best.
I personally love the zebra stripes. Yes, the histogram shows you if you are over exposed but it does not show you what part of the image is blown out like the zebra stripes does. Sometimes its okay to overexpose something that you don't need detail in, like the sun. And exposing for zebras is like exposing to the right of the histogram which we know gives us more detail in the shadows.
+Jonas Hesselmark Use whatever you like better. If the zebra works best for you: use it. I'm using the Histogram. Others might not like both of them. It depends on your personal preferences. Stay tuned and thanks for the feedback!
Hi Jonas!
I fully agree with you regarding the use of zebra stripes. I wrote a post on Phantom pilots yesterday March 15, 2017. After a day has not commented on this post. I see that both zebra stripes and historgram discussed some general.
Now I have sent a mail to DJI headquarter, so maybe one day there is an improvement.
Are you from Sweden?

Hi Paal!
I agree with your suggestions in your post on Phantompilots.com.
I don't know if DJI will add more professional features, like you mention, on the Phantom line but it would be very nice to see.
I'm from Denmark btw. :)
Thumbs up ere' Tom great demo as always - plenty of information, many thanks for sharing :-)
Auto White Balance can cause the color temperature to change through the video recording. For example, if viewing a sunny area and then rotating to view a cloudy or shaded area. Setting the White Balance to a fixed setting such as Sunny or Custom will guarantee that the WB does not drift or change throughout a recording.
+Logan Boyd it is the other way around, if you set white balance to Sunny, if you rotate to shadows, everything will look blueish, and no solution for that at all. Leaving it automatically, It will change increasing the kelvin degress, filming your footage much closer to real scene.
True
Yes, but the change will always happen in the part of the shot you want to use ... same as auto-exposure.
.Hey Tom, think you're tutorials are great, so easy to follow, l have used most of them and managed to sort out a lot of issues, thanks.
Great video yet again, I can't wait for more in this series
Fantastic! This will save me some time finding the settings. Though I will be using PAL. On that note:
To get attractive video at 25fps, use 1/50s shutter speed (if possible). I don't know if you were already aware of that, but in case you weren't, then there you go.
Thank you for this video, very helpful having all this stuff in one short-ish video.
Hello, great tutorial video...one question: for the phantom 4, do I need specific memory card?
THANK YOU SO MUCH! This was very helpful!!! I actually DID think something was wrong with my camera until I watched your video! THANKS AGAIN!!!!
Such an absolute wealth of information. You do a fantastic job, Tom.
Hey Tom! I love your videos. Very informative. I have a question for you. If I'm shooting in 1080p at 60 fps in manual mode with ISO at 100 and 1/120 shutter speed and I have a +1.0 EV, which ND filter would give me the right exposure? Is there a rule for the ND value based on the EV? Thank you for the information, sir.
Tom thanks for your videos, you are very informative, and clear.,Also
the editing is awesome.
Hey Tom! Great review
Hi Tom, I use to have a P3 Pro, and I just got a P4 a week ago, I have to say, this video it's great!
Now I have to learn about the ND Filtres, Also I would like to see a video like this one, but about photos...
Thanks!
Nestor Pool Hi cool picture broo
Thank you, very helpful!
Great tutorials Tom - However, I am searching for the way to select RAW format for stills. Where do you change it from jpeg to RAW format?
Thanks for the settings I think I got mine all dialed in now :)
Some great tips here. Thank you!
this was so helpful, thanks!
Do you have any suggestions on what settings to put the camera on for a long exposure night shot? I have been flying and filming for a month now and I truly love my Phantom 4!
Brilliant video NTSC tip excellent I have now got 3840x2160 at 30fps never knew this cant wait to try in the morning Thanks!!!
Hi Tom - great vid thanks. I was wondering how you set up iso with a shot going from inside a room to out the window into bright sunlight? Would you set up with Iso 100 setting and the correct ND filter for the outside (main view) and then switch to auto iso to handle the low light within the room?
Thank you. I am now aware how the screen image can differ so much when searching for command icons.
A lot of interesting info. Thanks.
Thanks Tom for another great tutorial. Simple and easy to understand. You should be an English teacher 🎓👍
Tom is it possible to make an instruction movie about taking photos with the drone and I would to learn about raw photos threw the phantom 4.
well done TOM !! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK
1920x1080 with 60fps is perfect!
awesome and thank you for the video
Thank you for the awesome video and sharing some of that useful knowledge 🏖🏰🏯⛱🏜🌇
Very informative.. Thank you for sharing!
Tom, If you set all these camera settings using the app on a iphone, and then later decide to use an iPad instead, will you have to change all the settings again, or will they be the same that you set when using your phone?
Hi Tom! Great video, helped me a lot. I'm planning to get some ND filters for my Phantom 4 now, but not sure which I really need. I fly in Denmark but will be working in East Africa a lot, so obviously a lot of sun. You recommended ND8 + 16 + 32. Do you reckon I might even need ND64 in Africa, and also is it ever useful to have an ND4?
Very detailed and informative video...hats off to you!
Thank you for this excellent tutorial.
awsome job as always thank u sir
Hi my friend. What do you think about better results for Greece? What settings on camera video size and NTSC or PAL. The NTSC will it work well?
Hi Tom,
Over the years, I have always watched your videos about setting up cameras for certain drones and used that as a guideline. I have never seen you say set the white balance and flicker to auto.
Can you explain why this is different on the Phantom 4 ?
Very helpful! Thanks Tom! Big hug from Cuzco, Perú.
Thanks for the video, found it helpful. now to give my drone a fly :)
does the video quality(size) settings also interfere on video transmition smoothness?
Is there a way to make light bridge send faster video ( more continuous )?
Dude, you have great videos! Thanks
I have a question about basic camera adjustments.
Is this lens a fixed focal range, or can it zoom? Also, can you adjust the focus manually? And can you adjust the aperture?
Thanks!
Hi' Tom, Does the manual settings box have to be on screen while filming. ?
Thanks for the nice tutorial video
Hi Tom so on my phantom 4 when using ND filters, and in-flight I need to make slight adjustments according to the histogram, should I mess with the ISO or the shutter speed?
hi great video. I noticed that you had f stops for aperture. how?
excellent Tom ..thanks
Very professional!
great job. thank you
Thanks man good information
Thanks. This was quite helpful.
Sehr gut erklärt !!!
Tom, whenever i record on 4k and try and watch it on my laptop it is always very slow and jittery. Its looks fine on 1080P though. Do you know why?
Nice work.
Awesome job good info, Thanks
Great content, thanks!
I liked your video, very specific on everything. But, I went out and made an Video yo test out the settings and I find the colors too faded, I like the colors to be a little more vivid. Any recommendations?
the best tom! thumbs up!!! thanks!!
Thank you Tom. Will try again with your settings. The previous footage was jerky especially when I tried live streaming......terrible and not usable.
great videos mate . I'm in UK can U help? I have a phantom 4 pro .I'm a Very new pilot ..The camera works sometimes ? I'm getting a warning saying gimbal disconnected . Then after a bit the camera starts working ? Then it stops any ideas am i not doing something? Should this happen ? Or should camera/gimble just work all the time when controller and craft connected yours hopefully colin
Hi Tom, i have a p4 and thinking of upgrading it to p4pro. Is there a big difference in the quality?
-2 on the contrast while in D-log is actually a bad idea, as I found out today. D-Log already maxes out the dynamic range on the sensor, and lowering the contrast will only pull whites down to a light grey, and will pull blacks up to a dark grey. Try it out for yourself. Point the camera at the sun, and switch between 0, -1, and -2 while in D-Log. The sun should be complete white, and you'll see the top of the histogram get pulled down, thus lowing dynamic range.
Great video agin thanks Tom :)
Hi Tom keep up the great work. Tom can you tell me what Dji goggles modes work with the phantom 4 I have looked everywhere and nobody seems to know so many different answers. Please help I got my goggles for my 60th birthday in September and still cannot work it out.
Well done Tom, rgds from Switzerland, Andy
Awesome tips
Thank you great tutorial :-)
well explained......nice video
I just updated new DJI GO app April 13, 2016. I thought when I did that all custom settings would be lost. It looks like some where saved? is that something new? thanks!!
Tom, on the DJI Go, Advance Setting, What the Gimbal Start and Stop Buffer are for?
Does this camera (in still mode) has the manual exposure also (shutter and time manual settings), or only the AE (with or without AE bracketing)?
I didn't really catch the idea why you prefer 30 fps over 24 fps? I would really appreciate if you could make some kind of explanation video with examples and comparison! Anyway, thank you for your fantastic effort!
I just received a Phantom 4 for Christmas and a have just done a couple short flight s in the house , as it is minus 30 degrees outside .Both flight's were only 8 and 10 minute hovers , but when I put the Micro SD card in my computer to download the video I had no sound ......Great picture but no sound ?? Do I have to set the sound manually in the set up menu , or do I have a problem camera ??Cheers
Hi Tom! First off, awesome video! Second off , if I leave it 3840x160 I can't view it from my mac or Pc cause it lags any suggestion why is it lagging and how can I fix it thanks bud
Thanks great info
Continuous flight index mode is also handy for proving how many flights the Phantom has done.
I`m a phantom 3 standard owner, but I also find this video very useful.
+Vilius K I was thinking the same lol.

A video for still and videos would be great!
The best tutorial to date
TOM! please let me know what you think about the video and picture quality compared to the phantom 3 pro. How much better is it?
Night or day difference or is it something that can be made simular with pc software?
Also would you be so kind and share a dng raw photo and video with dropbox, google drive or something simular? I cant find it anywhere... :(
+GranVlog Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/yqa-gcGxNTM/видео.html Why don't you join my group and ask someone for a photo? I'm not at home and can't share a file now. facebook.com/groups/tomstechtime
