UPDATE: Shortly after the announcing the full spec of the S1H, Atomos confirmed that the S1H will be able to record ProRes RAW over HDMI using the Ninja V.
When prores raw update releases do a comparison between nikon z6 and s1h .
That's awesome :) Now Panasonic give as better af and nd filter and we got perfect camera for indie filmmakers :D
Vilkan Visions when will that be? 2022? I dont believe ANY of this until atomos finally delivers... looking at you nikon...selling a camera with promises that never come true is not okay

wow. this makes it a game changer lol
I’ll wait till 2030, when I can pick this camera for $500.
By 2030 the iPhone 38 will kick the S1H's arse.
@@hawaiirealmedia5610 a lot will disagree to the truth you just spoke /wrote
So sad that i have to accept your written truth

But we have to submit
needless to wait so long it wont be out of order for long time; _k will be the standard in 2030 but shooting in 6K and 8K wont make any difference in the final results except for marketing as usual.. but this PANASONIC S1H i got now is very amazing at all levels in pictures and videos really.. the best for now !!!

wow. The imagery is surprisingly good! The added dynamic range seems quite apparent. Awesome and thorough review, much appreciated = )
I much prefer the image from this than from the GH5
Carl
@@ProAVTV You prefer the image from the GH5 over this? I assume you mean the value? Otherwise I must have missed something in the review.
I prefer the image from the Blackmagic pocket 6k
Whoops! Wrote that too quickly, I meant I prefer the S1H to the GH5. Corrected now.
Carl
Great video. Very impressed by the S1H. I'm tempted to pick one up
You make the best reviews on youtube.
Your show is so well put together. Shooting on the C300 helps too!
What an incredible camera!! Panasonic has delivered for filmmakers!! The S1 got me worrying, but the S1H has taken away all my concerns of Panasonic's dedication to the filmmaking community. All I can say is WOW!
The S1HI believe from watching the review, would be perfect as a B cam for the EVA1, or you could buy 2 S1H's for roughly the price of one EVA1
Great camera, great video again. Thank You :)
Great video, thank you. Would love to see an in depth compassion of the S1H and the S1 with Vlog, all the little non obvious differences.
love how the menu looks
Great overview, Carl! Interested to hear your thoughts on this vs the new BMPCC6K :) I could see them complimenting them very well in a kit.
I think the image on the pocket 6k is probably better. But overall I prefer the S1H. But it’s so early I haven’t used either enough to know for sure yet
Carl
Fantastic review. Hope to buy this camera soon.
Great review! The image looks so good
Thanks for watching, it's a nice camera for sure!
Dan
Great review, thanks! Does it have a magnification function that also works while recording?
Wow... the model is gorgeous
Love you reviews and channel
Hi Carl, Great review my friend. I wonder Atomos will update the Ninja V to not only to allow Pro-Res RAW, but allow 6K recording?
Thank you for the video, how did the camera perform in low light scenarios?
Which camera and lens did you use for the closeup S1H shots? The product shots look alot sharper and overall calmer.
Another great review! Kudos!
Thanks for watching!

I get all the quality I need from my g9 for video. NO plans to upgrade anytime soon
Thanks a lot for the video :)
This could be the ONE camera to upgrade for me :D
even 1080p HF in 10 bit nice!
cheaper Blackmagic pocket 6k for $2495
This has lots of advantages over the Pocket 6K that are worth the extra money. The improved ergonomics, the EVF, the Stabilised sensor, the more flexible mount, and lots more. Pocket 6K is a great camera, but they are very different
Carl
Yes the IBIS and EVF alone nearly worth it :D
You should've been an actor, friend. Nice video! Well-spoken.
Definitely my first choice were budget to permit it :)
9:45 Sigma use a separate filter within the mount of their Foveon sensors, so now that they're moving to the L mount this would definitely be a design consideration for them. They even have the MC-21 adaptors already so, let's hope they put it all together.
Extraordinary model, btw
How about a BMPCC 6k vs S1H shoot out?
You should rent them both and beat him to it!😎
Right now the S1H is running on firmware 0.4B, so it still has a ways to go before the firmware is finished. No point in testing the S1H until the firmware is ready to ship.
codec and bitrate is much more important than sensor size - cant you already guess the result between h265 10 bit 4:2:0 200mbit/s and BRAW Q0 12 bit - 1552-3864mbit/s ?

Hi ! Thank you for this review ,
I would love a complete review like the one for the bmpcc 4k.
To get an answer on everything in the camera side of it.
Dynamic range, breaking the footage for color science and lut, can afc in video mode can keep a face or is there a too huge lack, is the camera can take high temperature in bright sun (my a7ii stop really quick when in bright sun) etc
Thanks again and a pleasure to see your vidz as always, from French side of your followers !

Always wondered, where do you guys get those lovely domed stickers made for your gear?
Was the footage filmed in St Albans? Looks familiar.
Thanks for your video! do you know if it's possible to charge the battery with the SS USBC plug while shooting video?
That screen!!!!!!! 😍
I am curious how the battery life is going to be on the consumer model.
I am exited about this camera, it looks like an excellent B camera for documentary filmmakers like myself. A few questions do come to mind: Are there L mount speedboosters available yet? Wide angle when shooting in 4K 4.2.2. is a concern... Also, how is the I.S. with non Panasonic glass? I.S. with cine glass sounds amazing... This does look interesting, I like the viewfinder too, it’s actually useable, which makes for a nice change...
I know it's not for pictures but is it good for photos I will be using it for both?
Idk man.. all of these cameras are beginning to look exactly the same. This could've been GH5 or GH5S footage. All of which are fantastic options.
The most obvious difference will be the ability to shoot full frame. Being able to shoot 6k, 5.9k 16:9, proper Varicam level v-log, all of this will count for more intensive productions.
All Panasonic cameras look the same
I disagree while agreeing at the same time. Panasonics will all share similar look characteristics. However, to my overly-analytical eye, I can quickly tell that this one has been tuned to be as similar to the Varicam as possible. If you haven't seen a lot of Varicam footage, it may be hard to tell, and a lot of it has to do with the way it processes DR and highlight roll-off, V-Log, and more importantly, V-Gamut.
@@goclick Voigtlander makes some f0.95 prime lenses for MFT. That's still really wide even when you multiply it by the crop factor.

one big Problem with the GH5: you cant use HDMI out and camera controll over usb for a gimbal to controll f/iso/wb at the same time. Is this fixed now?
Will the Atomos Shogun 7 be of any use with the S1H? What has happened to the Atomos Shogun 7? not a lot of reviews online since its availability.
Any news on dynamic range and highlight handling?
It is all about the build quality (leica) we like to know is there a chance is works for how long
Is it better than Sony A7s ii in low light performance??
is it better than Sony A7s ii in extreme low light performance ??
Can someone tell me why 4K 60 or 4K 120 is not possible at full frame... Is there a work around? or are they just assuming that we will do it at 1080P?
Just awesome i want 😍
They won't personally make an ND adapter because they want to sell lenses. I think they should've got rid of the mechanical shutter to fit it internally. Hopefully a good third party ND to EF adapter for L-mount will come out soon.
What should happen for variable ND is a Fotodiox throttle ND that fits third party lenses to the Panasonic L mount. I used one for the Nikon Z mount with Rokinon EF mount lenses and another with FD lenses to Z mount and both worked great.
But to date Fotodiox has not produced their throttle ND for the L mount.
Is there any movement from the sensor if bump hard?
How is it for photography?
What lens was used to film the test footage in this Carl (the actual S1H camera not the BTS cam)?

how would you compare this to sony fx9 ?
Which one is better 4 k 4.2.2 or 6k 4.2.0?
looks like a great camera for people doing weddings, tilt screen is great for people using gimbals as well. Hopefully I can afford the upgrade at some point
Absolutely, it would be a fantastic choice for weddings.
Carl
IF you can't afford it, buy the Blackmagic pocket 6k for only $2495. Probably better for shooting weddings as well
@@gfilm6870 I own a pocket 4k and I'd much rather use the S1H tbh. Reliability. lowlight, and battery performance is key for weddings to me
@@timekeepermedia5142 I own the pocket 4k and think the lowlight is actually better. Just buy a battery grip for the pocket 4k for better battery?
@@gfilm6870 The Pocket actually is not a good camera for weddings. You know how many batteries you'll have to take with you? Also no IBIS.
How many times are you going to say "unlimited recording"? That's simply not possible unless it streams off to some off-camera storage.
Hi can you help - someone is saying that they are selling a Panasonic S1 - NTSC version - do you know what that means... I thought they both shoot NTSC and PAL or do I need to somehow convert it?
my only concern is how good or inefficient is the auto focus for like a wedding
may I ask how you grad your footage? Looks awesome
Thanks! I'm assuming you mean the S1H footage? For grading, most of the legwork was done with the Panasonic L-Log LUT (technical, not a creative LUT) that's built into FCPX, which gave quite a good result for most shots straight away. From there I adjusted the shadows and highlights slightly along with a touch of saturation to match each shot to the sequences.
Dan
Can that autofocus be fixed in a future software update or is it a hardware issue? I love this camera and want it so bad, but autofocus is an important factor in the work that I do. If I thought that Panasonic was going to invest in making that feature at least comparable to Sony and Canon than I'd probably pull the trigger. If it is a lost cause and a hardware issue, then I'll probably have to pass... unfortunately.

They should probably wait until the S1H firmware is finished. Apparently the current S1H firmware is 0.4B according to the video Lok Cheung posted today.
@@SewTubular We should wait for Blackmagics firmware is finished too they love doing updates as well.
@@durrsky1515 So they are shipping cameras with unfinished firmware? ...I would have thought they were at firmware 1.0 before selling the cameras.
@@SewTubular Companies do firmware updates months after cameras are released.
@@durrsky1515 Yes, of course. My GH5 cameras are currently running on firmware 2.5. I remember when the GH5 was tested in December 2016 and January 2017 while running on unfinished beta firmware, and only about half the camera functions were working properly. In March 2017 the GH5 started to ship and it was running on firmware 1.0.
Both Lok Cheung and Jordan Drake from DpReview have both confirmed that the S1H cameras they tested were running on the unfinished beta firmware 0.4. Likely Panasonic will finish the S1H non-beta firmware version 1.0 in time to ship the S1H by the end of September. Tests made on unfinished beta firmware do not represent the performance of the finished camera running firmware 1.0. So you need to wait until the firmware is finished before trying to compare the camera to anything because you are testing with an unfinished camera.

Dan
sony Fs5 vs Panasonic s1 which is the best for low budget filmmaking in your opinion please help me and please let me know
1000% depends on WHAT you shoot most often. They are completely different form-factors so technically one can't win over the other. FS5 is a VIDEO camera - audio inputs/mixing, button layout, Raw output. The S1 is a HYBRID camera in a stills camera form-factor. It's mainly all about the form factor, and how quickly and easily you can set it up and use it for what you need to do.
1000% depends on WHAT you shoot and how quickly and easily you can set up each camera for what specifically you intend to shoot. They are such different form-factors that a comparison between the too will unfortunately never be able to answer the question for each individual filmmaker and their needs, they are just too different worlds with similar end-results (aside from raw video output from the FS5, of course).
Do more research because your comparing apples to oranges. They’re so different dude.
Does it shoot 12bit 4:2:2....?
9:07 ND filter adaptor what is it product?
REALLY impressive! The image looks great, and it seems Panasonic is putting all out for this one. Dual-native ISO, 6K, IBIS, the best LCD-screen mechanism yet, just to start it off. Once the lens line-up gets even better, i'm sure this will appeal to many pro shooters with bigger budgets. The one-handed walking scene (6:13) with IBIS was absolutely stunning, especially for a FF! WOW! So much good offered here, built to last! It seems Panasonic made a wise decision to go FF after all. The focusing system is still contrast-based, but most pros focus manual anyway. Nothings perfect, nothing ever seems but this is REALLY GOOD!
All Panasonic need to do now is make a servo zoom lens for camera and i will buy it
Image is too crisp, needs to be softer..it’s a great cam but I want a vmount battery and an external ssd
Should we wait for Sony A7S3?? Thats the question.
This camera looks impressive except for the Autofocus. I love shooting manual and if I buy this camera I would wrap around my head that I will be shooting with manual focus. That price though is the one that got me thinking. We are talking about 6000 $ to get this camera with the new 24 70 F2.8 as your only lens!!!! Ouch!!
How is it as a photo stills camera. I know you discussed it quickly and I know it's more a video camera first but in DP reviews all theybsaid was it suffersbas avphoto camera and that's it.
mkq0007 its 24mp same as the S1 so most likely similar stills IQ.
Would you take this over the EVA1, price aside?
Im going to use both in my commercials and indie films.
Love the flip screen! Best of both worlds and I also noticed the 24-70mm f2.8 - dare I ask the price of this🙃
Anyway, great video as always 👍

If I'm looking to upgrade from the Gh5 and Gh5s - would the S1 or the S1H be my better choice? I know the S1 is much cheaper, especially needing the glass as well, but is it worth the extra $2K for the S1H?
S1H would be a better choice, but whether thats worth 2K is up to you. I'll do a video on choosing between the two at some point i'm sure
Carl
@@ProAVTV Image quality wise, am I noticing a huge difference between the S1 and the S1H? Or does it just come down to video features available to me over the S1 rather than a better image?
@@weddingvidpro2389 As a GH5 user as well what holds me back from jumping to these FF cameras is the cost of the lenses as well as the lack of options. Once Sigma has several fast zooms available that might change. But by then we could be looking at an S2H!
@@digital.mente. For sure. All my glass with the exception of 1 lens is MFT mount glass. I guess you get a chunk of change selling off the MFT gear for the FF, but you'll still be coming out of pocket a lot to make up that difference. Tough decisions man! Haha
If you want a cheap S1H get the Blackmagic Pocket 6k for $2495 6k 50fps 12-Bit BRAW for $2495 with EF mount. If you are going to spend $3000-$4000 on a single camera get two for the price of one like the Blackmagic pocket 6k + Blackmagic pocket 4k = $3790

I don't know why someone hasn't done this. Heck I don't care if its someone like Metabones does it. It makes perfect sense if you're going to be in the adapter business to get inspiration from Canon and produce it.

09:18 too bad they can’t because canon has the patent on the variable nd adapter.
Maybe on THAT specific adapter with their specific measurements, but patents like those are quite simple to overcome. Just design something slightly better.
6k?
Meanwhile the Blackmagic Pocket 6k for $2495 6k 50fps 12-Bit BRAW for $2495 with EF mount. You could get a pocket 6k and pocket 4k for less money than the S1H.
And you still don't get the flip screen, IBIS, ergonomics, battery life. P6K and S1H are diff cam for diff purposes. P6K, as its name suggests, is designed more for cinema than everyday shooting run and gun style. Although more exp, I think S1H is a more well rounded cam.
@@shem44 You could buy a Blackmagic pocket 6k and another photography focused camera for the same price you pay to own the single S1H. The price is just too expensive.

The S1H is a definitely a game changer for professional video production. The camera is really a full-blown 6K cinema camera in a mirrorless body that exceeds the capabilities of anything else in it’s class. For video, television, and film production I can confidently say it offers more bang for the buck of any video camera ever made. Here’s a link to my review of the camera and a trailer for a the 4-hour S1H master class I have produced that can help new owners get the best results with their camera. ruclips.net/video/GhZP14WVCn0/видео.html
fans and heat ? No ARM chip yet !
I love my GH5 for pro hybrid work including stills. This camera appeals to me more as a pro still camera purely due to that screen design. Every S body should have had it. I think camera companies are oblivious to how many still shooters love the articulating screen for fast and varied shooting conditions. I'm with a lot of people that just wanted a full frame GH5 for hybrid use, albeit for me, more on the stills side. Very tempting panasonic, let's see how your upcoming lenses cut the mustard now.
Basically this IS Panasonic's answer to your full frame GH5 wishes.
Picture quality seems very good, not mind-blowing though. The lack of proper AF is a disappointment. I can't really see the market for these type of cameras. They have really advanced video capabilities in a photographic-oriented body, which is not really prepared to video work. That means that you have to put a lot of accessories (xlr adapter, ND's, battery grip...). If you are serious about video and willing to pay a hefty price tag, why would you pick one of these instead of, say, canon c200 or sony FS5?
It seems like an odd beast to me as well, I'm not sure who will buy into this system. I can't imagine anyone buying this to shoot photos so I too don't get the photographic body style they've went with. If Sony ups their bitrates and offers 10 bit I think those cameras will make better all-rounders for hybrid shooters. Interesting though to see what it will push other makers to produce now.
Full frame
Why? IBIS in a relatively small body compared to an FS5 or C200. Adapt PL, EF, Nikon and all kinds of other lenses, while still using IBIS. Still fits on a Ronin-s. Full Frame.
c200 is pricer, heavier and can shoot either in raw or lousy mp4. Same goes for FS5 which cannot do 4K at 60p.
Honestly speaking, a little underwhelmed by the specs since there's already the BMPCC 6K in the market. I wanted better high speed capability but it seems basically the same as the GH5/
especially when Blackmagic have BRAW and 12-bit for only $2495. You could a Blackmagic Pocket 6k + Blackmagic Pocket 4k + battery grip for the same price you pay for a S1H.
Except it's a full frame camera
And looks very videoy, why is that?
6:11 No hate; just an honest assessment. But I think the stabilization is somewhat jerky at moments. I don't like it.
I wonder if you can disable the IBIS?
@@edpr2244 Good question. If anything like Sony, it just makes sense that you can.
