  • Following a request from a viewer, today we're taking a look at landing the big jets in Microsoft Flight Simulator - doing a couple of circuits of Stansted Airport in the PMDG Boeing 737-800. On the first circuit we land manually to illustrate the HSI/CDI symbology that guides us in, and on the second circuit we use the autopilot and autoland.
    The key to all of this is getting the aircraft configured, and in the right place in the sky to begin your final approach. For a three degree glideslope, 2500ft above airfield elevation at 10 miles out, with the aircraft fully configured for landing (flaps, gear, lights).

    I bought the PDMG 737-600, and because of this video I finally did an ILS landing at KMCI 01L. Thank you so much for this video, and all your others as well.

    Hey! Thanks for listening to my suggestion. I really find these videos useful and helpful. You should definitely make a landing tutorial on some of the bigger jets such as the B777 or 787 as there aren't many available online. Would be a great video idea and I'm sure many people would look forward to it!

    Gosh. Two videos in one day :)
    Flying circuits in a 747 is a little more involved than flying them in my little virtual piper :)

    Thank you for a great video! Looking forward to trying it myself. I tried to get into the Zibo 737 a few months back but had to go back to the King Air 350 as a stepping stone. Looking forward to getting back into the 737 soon!

    Thanks, Jon! I have been struggling with the APR mode for a while. Some times it works and other times it doesn't. I'll give this a shot and see how i go.

    The Bredok3d 737 800 max has a full digital cockpit for more realism with the heads-up display

      In the PMDG the HUD works just like the real thing - and can be retro fitted to the cockpit. It's in the PMDG menu of the FMC. The PMDG accurately replicates each livery/airframe - so specific aircraft are already pre-configured exactly as the real ones are. I'll do a video on it soon - I don't think I've ever covered it.

    Do you have to land on a CAT III runway in order to use Autoland? I have read conflicting answers and your explanations have always been spot on! Thank you.

      Thank you. That would be awesome. I’m just getting into the big birds so practicing takeoffs and basic navigation and landing rather than full flights is much more useful! Thank you. Love your work!

    Great video as usual. I use the Fenix A320 and the PMDG 737-600. Love them both but i always find the 737 more of a challenge to use.
    I rarely get a smooth landing with it where i can quite often butter the 320. I always use live time/weather. Does anyone else find the PMDG 737 tough to land smoothly or is there something im missing?
    I use Turtle Beach Velocity one.

      I find it easier to land the Boeings than the Airbuses lol

      Let's assume you're stable, on-speed and on the glide, you fly it right down to the touchdown zone. Once you cross the threshold, wait and cut the throttles at the '20' callout and then begin your flare - only a slight pitch up of a few degrees. Once you hear the '10' callout, you hold that attitude until touchdown.
      I recommend asking such questions on professional channels that know their stuff, like flightdeck2sim (737 captain and instructor) and 737 Driver (now A320 Driver as he's switching type). These guys will have plenty of videos on the 737 and how to fly/land it properly, if you want to really get to grips with the plane as realistically as possible.
      They even explain how to properly fly circuits in the 737 just like you would during base training, too.

      @@Deadmode yeah i really like that flightdeck guy too. Sound like just need a bit more practice really as im doing pretty much what you mentioned.
      Maybe being a much smaller aircraft the 600 is just a bit more sensitive to crosswinds or dodgy inputs from me? Lol
      Will keep on trying! 🤣 one day it will happen.

      Landing A/P is starting to be routine and I'm getting good landings. Now I got to start disengaging A/P further down to practise and get the feel for the plane. (737-600, 800) I must add however, that most landings were in good weather conditions. Those that were bad or low visibility, I had A/P until 5 seconds to touchdown.

    On the SPD/MACH number you select, what does the A or B that is in front of it mean?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  7 месяцев назад

      I *think* it means it's above or below what the aircraft can achieve in it's current configuration.

    Well thank you but for your starting up the 737-900 my engine did t start at all why would that be?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  8 месяцев назад

      No idea without watching what you're doing. To start the engines in a Boeing you need the APU running, APU Bleed on, Starter to GND, and then advance the start levers when N2 (gas turbine speed) goes through 20%.

    Better to do all that after flying a Cessna 172 for about 100 hours.

    OH I am glad to see it just isn't my computer/game has something wrong with it when it does that weird stuttering even though I turned most settings down low and the computer is way over qualified for the most part to run this game at the rated settings to be having the level of performance stutters and hiccups. So it seems it is indeed just crappy game optimization and bad coding I guess. Do you know how to fix and or have ever seen or had a issue where the ground has big patches sometimes are square in shape of orange color over the ground where the coast line of water has the pink missing texture color its weird like it has bad ground textures downloaded i cant get it to refresh them or to go away and I don't know where the ground textures are saved to delete it to get the game to redownload them and caches I don't know where is either.

      It's aircraft loading on the ground. MSFS is single threaded. The newer version (coming in 2024) is rumoured to fix it. I could prevent it by stripping out the AI and multiplayer aircraft.
