    • @SoldierKnowsBest
      @SoldierKnowsBest  2 года назад +5

      Thanks! For battery life, the i7 model that I'm using for this video did really well. Under normal usage, it lasted for 2 days before I hit a low battery warning while using 120Hz. My "normal" use may vary as I'm reviewing it and getting b-roll shots and things, but for the internals that this does have, it has impressive battery life.

    Great review! It's really a shame there is no SD card reader, would've been convenient to have.
    But regardless, totally getting the 32GB/1TB model as soon as it's available in my country. It's a bit pricey, but I'm buying it for my photography business, so it's basically -40% off price counting in tax savings.
    I recently updated the motherboard, 32GB of RAM, new AMD CPU and a 1TB M2 SSD for my desktop, but I've been waiting for a year now to get my hands on a graphics card to replace GTX 970. I'm tired of waiting, this machine is more powerful than my desktop so I'll just sell it, along with my late 2016 MB Pro 13". Ends up costing around 600€ to replace them with the 32GB/1TB variant + Slim Pen 2. Totally worth it. 😎

      A lot of pro cameras are now switching to USB-C for connectivity with onboard storage, which is the future. OEMs should be pushing camera makers to adopt this quicker and maybe MS has decided now is the time to move with the times. Sadly, if OEMs like Apple and MS do not push for new tech, camera makers get lazy and keep old cheaper less efficient methods. The end of flash/SD is inevitable and we should wrap them up as quick as possible. It is not as if you cannot plug in a dock or dongle. Anyway the hypocrisy of everyone jumping on Apple for keeping Lightning for another two years (before it goes port-less) yet want e-waste due to using SD cards when we can have cameras with internal storage!

    • @PhazonBlaxor
      @PhazonBlaxor 2 года назад +1

      @@andyH_England I agree, I would be fine having just internal storage with fast wireless transfer - that would be my type of bread instead of cables. Expandable storage would still be required though, if not for more storage, at least for backup purposes. There are cameras with 2 SD card slots for the extremely rare case that one of them breaks/gets corrupted. But it is important, I can only imagine how furious some newly wed couple would be if a photographer lost their once-in-a-lifetime photos because the storage just happened to malfunction.
      But regardless, I'm going to use an SD dongle. I already have one because it's not like my MB Pro has card reader either, so it's not really a dealbreaker.

    I love what M$ is doing with hardware, making sure Windows users have a refined all-rounder that gets all of the most important things right.
    A lot of reviewers seem to think that these convertible devices can only be justified if you are an artist or if you need the other modes. But weirdly, have the SB215, and I use its non-laptop modes maybe 20% of the time. I really like it as a laptop. And the same looks like it will be true of this. It's not just a convertible, it's actually a really solid machine, and I don't know of any other Windows laptop that has nailed the basics as well as this: webcam, display, keyboard, track pad, thermals-almost every competitor drops the ball somewhere.
    I know the quad-core chip and 3050 Ti are a disappointment for some, but I'm still running a 4790K and a GTX 970 on my desktop, LOL, so this will be an upgrade. And even for my video/graphic design/coding work, I think it will be more than enough. Especially considering the semi-luxury experience Surface products always provide, I just want a laptop I enjoy using.

    • @rocketcrazy3467
      @rocketcrazy3467 2 года назад

      Another point for hardware: Microsoft doesn’t really advertise it very much but the 32 GB model comes with a GTX A2000, a much more powerful graphics card. Although you do pay quite a bit for the upgrade, you also get a 1 TB ssd.
      On the whole, it feels like this machine is really meant to a well designed portable enterprise class workhorse. Definitely a step back from the “lapability” of the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop series, making more sense to use on a tabletop for advanced engineering students and professionals, as opposed to traditional consumers.

      @@rocketcrazy3467 I'd just like to clarify for anyone reading your comment, or for yourself, the A2000 GPU is an optional business model variant of the 32GB model. You'll pay about 25-30% more for it too, relative to the 32GB 3050 ti. Cheers :)

    Very informative. Thanks! About the Control Panel comment, I think that it is a little bit of a generational thing. I'm in my late 40s, and I still need the old-school Control Panel UI to be able to quickly find my way around. The new Settings experience is great, and technically everything is there, but I just need the old version. That and MS Paint are the two old-school experiences that I cannot let go. Everything else in the new UI is great.

    Nice review as always. I honestly can never use a windows tablet and call it a tablet. IPad OS and android tablets are far convenient for watching media and touch oriented than windows. The same go the other way, I can never see an IPad or android tab for productivity. If you want a PC then use windows or Mac; if you want a tablet then use an IPad or Android tab. For example watching Media, I only use Galaxy Tab as the apps like MX player which runs flawlessly with the touch but it's terrible on windows.

      Apple specifically keeps Touch and Non-Touch systems separate, connecting them within their ecosystem so you can share files and stuff between them in a heartbeat. Microsoft mostly goes the 2-in-1 route instead which means you already have everything on one system. Windows 10 has turned into a very good OS for both Touch and Non-Touch use, the OS and Microsoft apps are well optimised for touch input but not unpleasant to use with a mouse or touchpad, making it suitable for tablets as well as PCs. I've had a Surface Book 2 and still have an iPad Pro 10.5, so I've used both systems.

    You make a lot of evidence-free claims. For example, no other reviewers have mentioned loud fans and the need for headphones. So if you are going to make claims that 1) might dissuade someone from purchasing the product and 2) run counter to everyone else, you better be able to support it with evidence. Otherwise, at best you come across as lacking credibility and at worse you come across as being a fanboy for another brand...

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 2 года назад

      Not many reviews so far, more promos, but TheDigitalDigest mentions the heat and fans in his initial thoughts. The whole point of having that stepped design is that thermals are bad so it needs that active cooling. I accept MS did this for a reason so I do not object to the design, but saying it has no thermal issues on Intel 11th gen is raging against all known data. They should have waited for the efficient 12th gen arriving in 4-6 weeks (I think ultrabook first then performance version). In the UK this does not get released until 2022 so by then we will be into full 12th gen Intel so at the price it is a poor choice for anyone that knows about tech!
