Like I said in my main comment, they're usually pretty good every other major release. 98, XP, 7, and 10, in my opinion, were pretty great for their time. The ones that came between those, ME, Vista, and 8 we're terrible and now 11 is starting out on that same trend. I have a feeling we'll talk about 12 the way we do 98, XP, and 7 and 11 will be remembered as another flop.
Looks like THE ideal laptop for engineering students. Being able to use the same device with a dedicated GPU for taxing design and simulation software applications AND note taking as opposed to using 2 different Devices should convince many to make the purchase.
Remove features so they can sell other products for those same features. Removing the ports? "here, buy our surface dock," kinda like how apple removed the headphone jack, then 26 minutes later introduced the airpods.

Was really wanting a SB4. I have a 2 that I've use as my daily for work PC for years. Regularly pull the tablet mode off to show something to someone at another desk. And used it for gaming, like Overwatch, while traveling. I wanted an up-to-date modern spec version of that. This thing seems a bit much, with not enough on the inside.
I dunno, I have the SB3 and whilst I like the detachable screen, it's really cumbersome when I have apps open that are using the GPU (as you need to close them). It seems so much better that you can just flip it.
I agree, I've had a 2 for a few years now (and probably will for a few years more). But it seems this direction Microsoft has gone has shown me the next place to go isn't the Studio, its their Pro line which has really stepped up to the plate.
@Brian, I can see why it would disappoint some SB users, but having using the SB1 to SB3, and now on the SLS, this new design is SO much better for my use. I use it in 'tablet' mode literally every day, and switching between modes is just so much more convenient on the SLS. Before you often had to close dGPU apps and disconnect peripherals when switching modes, the latch would fail to open some times, and I had had to do that awkward dance of removing the screen, flipping it around, and aligning it with the tabs. Sometimes it'd take 15-30 seconds just to quickly switch modes. On the SLS it takes literally one second, so I find myself switching between modes much more often. I feel like it fulfills the original promise of the Surface Books much better. I also get better battery life than out of the 15" SB3 despite the smaller battery for everyday lightweight tasks. And the inking experience is much better, and the pen won't get lost because of the super strong magnet and position. Gaming is also roughly comparable with the 15" SB3 in a smaller device, plus RTX benefits, so I'm happy with it considering how few 2-in-1s have dedicated GPUs Of course it's not as good if you really need the lightweight tablet. But for me tablet mode was mostly for writing notes or editing images on a desk, or watching movies in bed or on the couch, where the weight doesn't matter. I've also tried the Asus Flow X13, BT the way, which offers much of the same stuff with a better spec'd Ryzen, but it's not nearly as pleasant to use or pretty, the keyboard is worse, it's louder, it gets warmer, the display is inferior, and the performance improvement isn't noticeable in everyday use for me. The SLS has its flaws, but it's nearly perfect for me.
I also have a SB2 15" and love it. My battery is pretty compromised, otherwise it still runs like a charm. I love the detachable tablet, but think I would like the SLS approach better where you can more fluidly switch between modes. I agree with you about the internals -- the middling cpu is the main reason I didn't buy the SLS and I'm hoping an update improves on that. Meantime, my good old SB2 is doing what I need it to do, as long as I'm near an outlet!

Nice review! I've been on the fence about this as an upgrade from a Surface Book 2 15" If the cpu was a little more powerful, I'd buy it in a second. The gpu is fine (I'm not a gamer, and from my experience with the SB2, I just need a little gpu oomph for the 2d and 3d applications I use). I really do love the flow of the form -- the easy transition to studio mode is something I'd use a lot. I use the stylus a lot too, and that's beautifully implemented. After almost 5 years with the Surface Book 2, I've been very happy with it. I love the removable screen and use it regularly. Because the larger battery and gpu are in the keyboard, that means the huge screen is magically lightweight. But it also means it gets hot, it slows down in any gpu-using software, and the battery life is extremely short. The SLS addresses these issues very elegantly.
I like how you are really trying with many things but especially with the ads. It is clear that a lot of effort has been put into them when many neglect them in their videos.
One of my favorite things about my Surface Book 2 is being able to pick up, and walk off with the light, thin screen and walk around my house. Unfortunately, this build gets rid of that on an even bigger platform. Hoping we'll still see a Surface Book 4 down the line
Sadly the book has likely been removed from the line up indefinitely, this device isn't that much bigger in my opinion though, still a solid choice from any competition out there for this kind of style of a device and dedicated GPU

Thanks for this review. It felt neutral, unbiased, and fair. The addition of relevant information with all the pros and cons of the device make it even better. Good day. (edited: typos)
This review has convinced me. I'm not upgrading my Surfacebook 2 to this. Its going to be the SurfacePro 8. A proper 2 in one I can do Photoshop on and most likley, some gaming like Warhammer Total War 2. Can't wait for your review Mr.Mobile of the SurfacePro 8 to see what you think of it!!
I have a base i5 8gb surface 8 it's way faster than I expected. My old surface couldn't do anything lmao. It even runs bf4 1440x960 (half screen res) on low at like 50-90fps. The 120hz screen makes games look amazing.
love the way he talked and calmness of this video review.. if the USB-IF could push out the next usb c protocols of 240w data & charge information and the OEMs can move on with the R&D and implementation use of the 240w usb c protocols.. the potential use for next surface laptop studio would be awesome... and also something similar for the pc handhelds like the gpd win 3...
no SD card slot is a real shame... I have an Asus Zenbook Duo (not the Pro) and I have a 512GB SD card sitting in it 24/7 effectively doubling more storage. My love for media certain fills it up, but it also allows to keep the main drive less than half capacity, prolonging the life of this heavily used laptop (easily 8 hours everyday). I dare say the SD card reader is the most under rated feature of most smart phones & laptops that still offer it. The only reason they would remove such a feature is the same as apple.. forcing us to pay more to increase storage (or rent cloud storage, which is never ideal compared to an SD) I do rent cloud storage on OneDrive just 100GB as an on the go back up.
SD cards die much faster when you use it that way so make sure you have it all backed up. Extra M.2 slot or mSATA on motherboard would be a much better option since it takes almost same amount of space as SD card reader.
I was really hoping for a spec upgraded surface book, I like the form factor better. Still undecided if I like this or not and if it would be practical 🤔
Its not really possible to upgrade the cpu of the Surface book because of the cpu being in the screen portion of the device, you could only upgrade the GPU. I just sold my SB2 a week ago to get this device, because I have no doubt it will be far, far more usefull. With the SB it takes to long and its too inconvenient to switch modes, not to mention that times it fails to do so on the first attempt, and the times it disconnected by mistake. This device literaly takes a second to switch modes and will never fail to do so, this alone makes it worth it. Of course the trade off is that there is no more tablet mode but that was incredibly rare to use anyway, therefore the benefits far outweigh the only drawback.
I really like the design of this one. I don't need a new laptop just yet, but I'm really hoping cheaper devices with the flexible hinge come to fruition by the time I do.
I really wish you hadn’t accepted betterhelp as a sponsor. They’ve been shown to provide subpar “therapeutic conversations”, log and sell data about their customers, and underpay and mistreat their therapists.
I'm not where I'd need to be in terms of funds to get this, art student, but a such a pleasantly designed laptop, that's powerful enough for basic gaming, to which I can connect my big boy drawing monitor, as well as use as a sketchbook when I'm on the go... It's definitely a good proposition. Price and I/O are the only drawbacks I can think of, but I do only use one full sized USB device in my workflow, if anything, the USB type C will lead to be using fewer cables when connecting the previously mentioned display. Hopefully, the different drivers won't mess with each other.
You mention if you don’t have the charging brick you can use the usb c Port. How do you do that? I travel half the year in a caravan in Australia. Just buying this laptop and use a pure sine wave portable power station with an ac plug. 300 watts. It has one PD usb c 60 watt connector. Wonder how I might use that.
Of course you mention the Duo 2 review looming over the horizon right as I mention the 1 with you on Twitter lol, looking forward to seeing what you think of it even if I can’t reasonably get it for a long time
As with most Surface products I feel the concept is sound with the first iteration, but it's the 2nd and 3rd that will deliver fully on the promise... This one isn't for me but I am curious to see what the sequel can bring to the table.
It's FAR too expensive for the included CPU and GPU (not to mention the lack of ports and underpowered charger). Had they done better in those areas I would have seriously considered one. It's beautiful, but unfortunately nowhere near competitive in value.
Good review sir , for me the less than good display for viewing in brighter conditions is a deal breaker , and a pity no SD card , and just ok speakers. They need to do better .
Even though I'm not much of a gamer, the graphics limitations on this would be a definite deal breaker with me, as I _DO_ like to have my _No Limits 2_ roller coaster simulator/builder installed, and the AMD with Radeon Chipset on-board my current laptop just barely processes the detailed graphics efficiently, so I can just imagine how this featured laptop's innards would lag with all that (I wish Toshiba still produced laptops, specifically the Qosmio)! The MS Surface is still no substitute for a full-blown laptop for graphics, Photoshop editing or Computer Illustration, in my opinion...
Usually my comments are a little more Tech based, but for this one, can I just say that this is a very sexy Machine? I know it's not value for money and not very capable either, but man, I really love how sleek it looks.
Great video as always. I'd love to see a video of your opinions and critiques of Windows 11 as well as your history/experiences with the Windows operating system. Sounds like you'd have some great stories to tell.
XP SP2 was the pinnacle of Windows too I agree. I still rock 7 pro because (whilst I have also tried 11 retail) it's just not as good and I am happy to run it forever even without updates
Loved and still love my SB2. Best device I've ever used but unfortunately a couple months ago the tablet seemed to stop holding a charge. Finally got around to opening it up just a week ago thinking it was the infamous bulging battery but it turns out the internal screw on the battery simply wasn't tight enough so Windows couldn't get an accurate reading on the battery levels. It was a pain in the ass to take apart and I've accidently broke my power and volume buttons. Still using it though. The SLS seems great but it's just way too expensive. Ive since gotten the iPad Air 4 and through I miss how all my documents were all on one place and I don't really like the iPad OS ui for multitasking. But the battery life seems too bad for the SLS and ARM chips make all of these devices obsolete in just a couple years.
The Duo 2 looks good I just got the Fold 3 so I won't be getting it but it will be good to see how bulky it is compared to the Fold. Fitting Sponsor though as you need a Therapist if you are going to pay that much
loved the review and very pleased you got rid of that silly bloom wallpaper for Bliss for Windows XP haha. love it. so basically for the 2nd edition of the Laptop Studio Microsoft needs to bring back at least 1 USB-A , 1 SD card slot and really work on better offerings for CPU power include an ARM option.(base) 6 cores for intel chips minimum please!! there's your checklist of improvements Microsoft.
Anyone who had their hand on the new Microsoft go 3. It looks very interesting but I have read som bad stuff about its process and performance over allt that its being very sluggish for its price, even the "best" model.

Thanks for this review. It felt neutral, unbiased, and fair. The addition of relevant information with all the pros and cons of the device make it even better. Good day. (edited: typos)
Brad colbow does great reviews , glad you saw it
Am I nuts or wasn't betterhelp that company that didn't even do background checks on their staff to see if they are licensed professionals?
@@memememine1 that's really good to hear!! When my surface dies I'm not gonna lie, I'm looking forward to the upgrade to the Pro!
You can go for Asus ROG Flow x13
Same! Thanks for saying this, I'm going to keep my surface 4 until it dies, even limited is pretty brilliant at most of the things.
@@Akash-Watched That's a nice laptop but I really have fallen in love with the two-in-one design of the surface series.
It's 4:40 am in India right but by all means Captain 2 Phones takes priority, I love watching the stuff I'll never buy 😇
me too 🤣🤣😂🌿
Although it doesn't matter but you stole My comment
love the way he talked and calmness of this video review.. if the USB-IF could push out the next usb c protocols of 240w data & charge information and the OEMs can move on with the R&D and implementation use of the 240w usb c protocols.. the potential use for next surface laptop studio would be awesome... and also something similar for the pc handhelds like the gpd win 3...
fyi, Better help has been recently enveloped in contraversy. With many people saying their programs arnt effective.
Outstanding review and those conclusions line where perfect. It describes perfectly the vibe of this product. Thank you.
no SD card slot is a real shame...
The only reason they would remove such a feature is the same as apple.. forcing us to pay more to increase storage (or rent cloud storage, which is never ideal compared to an SD)
I do rent cloud storage on OneDrive just 100GB as an on the go back up.
A man that keeps the start menu on the left in windows is a man of culture
in 2013 I had the Sony Vaio Flip which has the same flipping screen design. Loved that machine
Nice to see @Brad Colbow get a shout out!
Thanks for the vids too. Very easy to watch and the nostalgia is always a nice side mission.
I really like the design of this one. I don't need a new laptop just yet, but I'm really hoping cheaper devices with the flexible hinge come to fruition by the time I do.
8:30 This. For anyone who used windows xp service pack 2 and service pack 3, we know what he's talking abt. Man i loved that OS.
0:38 hey that's awesome!
B ROLL had me on edge. Eagerly awaiting some bloopers with laptops falling to their doom.
Bro...this machine is reminiscent to the Acer Aspire R13 with it's Ezel Hinge, it's just a improved version of that
3:28 - that segue was smoooth af!
You manage to cover the niche points that everyday users care about (screen polarisation)
Fabric below the hinge. I think by year 2 of frequent screen position changing will cause issues
Of course you mention the Duo 2 review looming over the horizon right as I mention the 1 with you on Twitter lol, looking forward to seeing what you think of it even if I can’t reasonably get it for a long time
Love the XP Rolling Hills wallpaper. 😂
As with most Surface products I feel the concept is sound with the first iteration, but it's the 2nd and 3rd that will deliver fully on the promise... This one isn't for me but I am curious to see what the sequel can bring to the table.
Will you be doing a surface pro 8 video? Looking to make a purchase decision..
PB Go is the benchmark for solid keyboard? I have one, and it's decent but not enough travel IMHO
Hey Michael, if the number of Ben Franklin is not an issue, would you use it over iPad Pro with magic keyboard and Pencil?
It's FAR too expensive for the included CPU and GPU (not to mention the lack of ports and underpowered charger). Had they done better in those areas I would have seriously considered one. It's beautiful, but unfortunately nowhere near competitive in value.
7:58 can u provide the link to buy that blue shirt ???
Good review sir ,
for me the less than good display for viewing in brighter conditions is a deal breaker , and a pity no SD card , and just ok speakers.
I bought a Belkin thunderbolt port hub if I ever need extra ports but I don't at all for what I use it for.
Maybe it's not a big deal to most, but as a developer I find the up/down arrow keys layed out like that in line with the left/right, nearly unusable.
Incredible review, as usual. I need to figure out what controls he was using to play Star Wars Squadrons.
Your reviews are top notch!
Question: Would the display be visible with aviator sunglasses? Aren't they polarized in the opposite direction?
Usually my comments are a little more Tech based, but for this one, can I just say that this is a very sexy Machine? I know it's not value for money and not very capable either, but man, I really love how sleek it looks.
Can’t wait for that Duo 2 review
What device is that at the 4:16 mark
Z fold 3
lack of media controls in the function row of windows laptops is a bigger miss than most manufacturers seem to think
Great video as always. I'd love to see a video of your opinions and critiques of Windows 11 as well as your history/experiences with the Windows operating system. Sounds like you'd have some great stories to tell.
Great Video As Always!
Hey fisher I remember you saying you are looking to buy a gaming laptop could you review the asus rog strix g513 amd advantage edition
Great review as always. I'm trying to figure out how your scrolling experience looks so much smoother than mine.
XP SP2 was the pinnacle of Windows too I agree. I still rock 7 pro because (whilst I have also tried 11 retail) it's just not as good and I am happy to run it forever even without updates
Not as good as I was hoping it to be but then I guess it isn't for me anyway. Great video sir. REALLY looking forward to the Surface Duo 2 video.
Fitting Sponsor though as you need a Therapist if you are going to pay that much
Wow brad got called out (in a good way) . Awesome
Can't help but notice - a Moto Razr? Weren't you into the Flip3?
Informative review as always! Looking forward to your Duo 2 review, hopefully the money I've spent on preordering it is well placed 😩🙏
do you think the i5, can be used on games such as call of duty and still be playable well?
My only puzzled confusion is... why didnt they fuse the surface studio hinge into this....
“I love technology that can change shape”. May I introduce you to…. The Transformers? 😆
Considering that you use a Macbook Pro for editing these videos, I’m curious what you’ll think about the up-coming M1 Pro and M1 Max Macbook Pros?
loved the review and very pleased you got rid of that silly bloom wallpaper for Bliss for Windows XP haha. love it. so basically for the 2nd edition of the Laptop Studio Microsoft needs to bring back at least 1 USB-A , 1 SD card slot and really work on better offerings for CPU power include an ARM option.(base) 6 cores for intel chips minimum please!! there's your checklist of improvements Microsoft.
Anyone who had their hand on the new Microsoft go 3. It looks very interesting but I have read som bad stuff about its process and performance over allt that its being very sluggish for its price, even the "best" model.
That polarization issue is honestly embarrassing....
Had they only gone with a 8 core AMD cpu and a few more ports this laptop would be one of the best on the market.... Hopfully they come out with a refresh this year with one of the new intel cpus that are actually usefull....
Windows XP SP2??????😂😂🤣🤣 I have never heard anyone say that until today. This "Old Guy" prefers Windows 7. Most stable OS they ever made in my opinion. Great video.
1:44 please don’t encourage that monstrosity.
