[SURFACE DUO 2 REVIEW]
The Surface Duo 2 is built to help you do a lot of things at once. And for tech reviewers, there is no busier time than the month so insane we gave it a new name: "Techtober." So to see just how well this new Duo does (or doesn’t do) at helping me keep my head on straight, I decided to take a page out of my buddy TheUnlockr’s book and take you along for part of an atypical Techtober day in Brooklyn. I'm Michael Fisher; join me and my friend David Cogen for a day in Dumbo -- on the Surface Duo 2!

Hey folks! Thanks for coming along on this Duo 2 trip to Dumbo! If you didn't get enough, you can experience the same day from a whole different perspective on David's video here: ruclips.net/video/OOsi6J-wBtc/видео.html
Just watched them back to back. You two are a fantastic 'Duo'. I'll get my coat.
And now the trip is complete. You guys should really do a 2-part video the way you have done in the past with samsung and LG phones. It would be really fun to watch.
I Honestly don't care about Photo Quality. I'm just Glad it doesn't have a Plastic Screen. I have Jabra 85 Elite Headphones & Soundcore Rave Neos for Big Bassed out speakers. That's way Better than a Fold in my book!!!
When is the pixel 6 review?
I so wanted MS to do well for the from factor. At least it's not Windows 11
Mr.Mobile's notes about this phone can be summarised by a line fit for a silly romantic film: "I loved the idea of you more."
Damn, I can imagine myself crying over this line
Wow! Simple yet very powerful line!
Which movie is it from?
So what you are saying is that you don't own a Duo nor have you ever touched one...
@@RK-um9tu They never claimed to. It’s a summary of MrMobile’s video.
@@ahmedp800 it is a generic trope-y quote that appears in some, more tragicomic, movies.
Unfortunately, almost ironically, the only case I remember hearing that quote is from the Netflix TV series "Luke Cage"... An action series.
"..honest to Panos triple camera array prominently protruding from the phone's posterior..." :: Chef's kiss emoji::
Awesome video, bud! 🙌
I feel my spine tingle with delight when Michael’s wordplay hits my ears 😌
Inspired :-)
THAT WITTY WORDPLAY WAS WONDERFUL. WOW
Sounds like a line straight outta LGR's mouth.
Like most Surface products I love the design and idea. I think a device that makes you crack it open to use it should cut down on mindless screen gazing, and you get a big workspace when you do use it. However it can't be easy taking an single screen OS that isn't yours and making it work well with 2 screens. I applaud MS for trying new things.
Yeah, techies applauded LG for their LG Wing and dual scree devices, but they dumpster dived sale-wise and were the final nail in the coffin of LG Smartphone. This is very niche and if you get too much wrong it becomes a black hole for MS. Innovation is only good if consumers buy it, otherwise it is just another big company wasting money. What I have learnt, that no other OEM will be thinking about doing dual display smartphones after LG and MS failures!
@@andyH_England I am currently using an LG Wing (Fold 1 before that), and to be honest, I like it alot.
I only wish they went with a more powerful chipset instead of what's in it, for future proofing, also a dual speakers instead of one, otherwise, it is built well, and I love the swing mechanism, although the features and integration is limited due to lack of software development, which is understandable.
It is really sad how LG smartphones folded, they almost always innovated and the LG Wing is a proof.
Excellent point, and I really hope both consumers and tech reviewers keep this in mind.
U R not a woman
@@laserbeam3836 lol , that's ur comment to that that word of wisdom. ok . why d u fink that ?
The fact that Microsoft added that huge camera bump that not only ruins its sleekness but also delivers a camera quality that's "just fine" is kinda sad and is quite a dealbreaker for me.
It's my only real disappointment with it -- huge bump for photos that are so obviously years behind.
I don't believe you mentioned it, but that excessive battery drain in the camera department could be due to the fact that you must have both screens open(unlike last year's duo) , therefore on, while shooting. I imagine that is a huge drain, unless you can turn the other one off of course.
Not gonna lie, Seeing the TEASE of the Pixel 6 for your next review in this one has me HYPED!! Though I'm kinda bummed you got the regular 6 instead of Pro, really wanted to know if Googles best is worth it. But maybe you'll do a comparison or at least touch on it. Excited for what's to come!
That external camera sticking out is such a deal breaker. The really good thing about the first Duo was how sleek its build was, and that camera has ruined it.
The first Duo didn't lay flat either with the Bumper on.
I've been using the duo 2 all day, it's not a big deal
@@tebhernandez for you
I'd be using this thing with that pen, so I'd be willing to live with it if it was really good.
@@mehshutup3041 And for you too!
MrMobile and TheUnlockr, my favorite *Duo*
Oh
I see what you did there
@@TheUnlockr love it when you two colab!
As I posted on your colleagues video, I love this device for business use. Two screens gives the same features as my desk setup in my office while on the road. I was a business conference this weekend and the DUO 2 was extremely useful while taking notes, doing research, and taking pictures of the speakers to include in my OneNote notes. There is NOTHING like this device for business use. I would appreciate reviewers realizing the unique business cases and productivity of this device. As with all Android phones, it will take some time to work around the quirks of the OS, but MS is pushing the envelop with this device and is likely to create the definition of the productive business device for real business use. The beauty for me is that I can use it for play time and work time. No other device comes close to meeting both needs. In my humble opinion being in the software industry for 45 years and creating a software product that is now a multi-billion dollar product, we are watching MS solve a business use case that will define the future for people like me.
Just cause a reviewer don't mention it doesn't mean it can't be for YOUR needs , Of course it can fit into special needs for certain ppl but that's for the very few who fit in your category a phone that is for everyone sells better and at the end of the day when everyone and your neighbor has that phone ( Apple,Samsung) is when your doing something in the phone industry.
I do really want one, mainly due to the square-ish screens which remind me a lot of the original Galaxy Note which I still want today just for the screen aspect ratio
Maybe it's just me, but having a dope camera just doesn't seem like it should be a priority in this form factor anyway
then don't make it interrupt the form factor.
@@syed2194 then you would cry for a better camera. Loving the duo 2, perfect in every sense,
I want a duo 1 but with all the upgrades in duo 2 except the camera
The minute I saw the camera bump on it I was out. I loved the Duo 1, but it was just too slow and buggy to justify the cost. I hoped the 2nd one would fix all the issues of the Duo 1, but it just made things worse imo. Yeah, it's a bit quicker, but there are still an enormous amount of bugs and they sacrificed their form factor to slap on an ok camera.
@@hk6926 A better camera was the least of my concerns about the Duo 2.
Man I love the aesthetics of this. But the camera weakness and missing middle between the screens is no good. After using the Galaxy Fold 2 and now 3, I think the only better form factor will be the "unrollable." Can't wait to see one of those!!
Nah, Duo is king.
I had fold 3 but sold it in favor of duo 2. At least for me duo 2 is so much better .
Agree to disagree that the Duo is better then the Fold 3. It can connect to Windows seamlessly, has better cameras, longer battery life, can multitask (4-5 windows even more) with no issues, better 120 Hz screen and also brighter (over 1200 nits) for outside work, IP68 rated, software is updated every 1-3 months with software support for 4 years makes it a hands down better multi tasking gadget.
@@pkpnyt4711 we are all different . For fold 3 plastic screen and strange aspect ratio kills it . Doesn’t mean it’s a bad device . Just I like duo 2 so much better .
@@hk6926 How do you deal with the touch lag and software bugs?
The fact that you're willing to hero watching the device into the new year is why you're a trustworthy reviewer. You're honestly giving the device a chance to shine at its best.
Hey Michael, you truly are the best tech story teller on this planet! I just love to watch your videos!!
I actually enjoyed SD2's review from Michael than any other Tuber.. way better than MKBHD, which felt he wasn't into the device at all but had to make a video.
agree
I don't know why but I read that as "best tech sailor" it really confused me for a second.
I'm used to even bad new cameras looking better than my S7 Edge, so when the camera isn't even that good, it really stands out.
I reminded myself of this when people were ragging on the fold 3 reusing the same cameras from the fold 2. I am upgrading from a note 9. Both the fold 2 and 3 phones have amazing camera setups vs my note 9.
Stupid FOMO taking over. Chill
@@kylesagley6524 🙏🏿
Considering how excellent the cameras were in Lumia flagship line, even during Microsoft's ownership, the mediocre camera on the Duo 2 kinda boggles my mind lol
Well on the lumias they controlled the software, now they dont.
@@angelofigueira7841 In which way don't they control the software? Are you talking about Android? Because that has nothing to do with the camera quality on their phones, or the camera software they use.
True, but I guess we'll never have anything like this Lumias be it in terms of hardware or software (not just cameras, the whole phone)
At least I'm glad that I've experienced WP (had 3 devices in my family) & would in fact still buy some more Nokias (Lumias and the 808 & N9,etc ) once I start earning, because I certainly couldn't risk buying a new 950XL as a primary in 2021.
Sadly some people haven't experienced WP at all.
@@sushimshah2896 iPhone?
I really liked MeeGo though. It was ahead of Android back then.
Well the engineers used to work with Pure View isn't there at Microsoft anymore, not sure if they kept the patents assuming they are still relevant since other OEM's make better smartphone camera experience now, that they either match or surpass Lumias back in the day.
It was said that Microsoft hired some Japanese company to do computational photography to improve the Duo, but clearly still needs more more, but also it is vastly improved from the first one that now it is perfectly usable, not on-par with the big boys but at least more than usable.
Hopefully more software updates and on version 3 that can do massive improvements. Maybe it also needs better hardware as well.
Amazing device. I am so impressed with it. The app pair split screen feature in brilliant. Messages with OneNote, and messages with phone are two of my favourite pairs. Unbelievably useful for business. The surface pen 2 with the swift keyboard is super accurate and smooth. Even better than the stylus on the note 20. I have also realised that the camera module has a surprising benefit of providing a tactile cue to easily orient the device quickly (often a challenge with tablets and even many phones where you need to look and check if the device is upside down). MS seem to be supporting it right out of the box which is nice and a must for it to take off. The recent android split screen OS news is also a positive sign that this form has real merits. Many reviewers (some of the biggest surprisingly) are making the mistake of comparing this to a traditional tablet and it's painful to watch. It's not intended that way at all.
Surface Duo 2 now supports Surface Slim Pen 2's haptic feedback
This is such an awesome tech review; rather more like an engaging story really than a just an outright review. Can't wait to watch more of your vids!
Imagine the camera module was magnetically detachable, with some exposed connectors. to have the camera as an option and keep the sleek design
@@aidancommenting I believe in the early prototypes of the first Duo, there was a round hole in the back, it's possible that they thought about making the cutout house a camera and keep it secured.
I just love that phrase:"architecturally entrancing but acoustically transparent holes" 🙂
I was so hyped about the first one and then i saw the reviews. Now that they didnt fix the whole package i am thankful for getting the Z Fold 3 and waiting for the Duo 3. I Love Microsoft and would love to have a Windows like Launcher on it for a PC experience...
This things gonna tank. There won't be a Duo 3
Mr. Fisher.. I will give it to you.. out of all the reviews I have been reading and watching, yours has come out to be the best yet. With almost all the others, there is some information here and there that I wanted the reviewer to talk about. Yours feels complete and satisfying.
Really hope the software can catch up to the hardware this time around.
It looks better than ever, and is still my preferred "foldable" device were I get one.
8:03 your eyes said it all Michael, "I'm never having kids" lol
So I never liked when one plus had those pop up cameras however this phone would have been the perfect application of that camera. The fact that it can't close like the original surface because of the camera bump makes me feel like they just put a bunch of parts together
I see your point. The OP pop-up camera was only for the selfie camera, so it's not used too much. It works though!
Yes to have it like the Zenfone 8 Flip camera would be quite awesome.
Pop up camera is not in any way a solution for the protruding camera at the back though. As mentioned in the video, there is just simply no way possible of getting a main, telephoto and wide camera into anything that isn't a large bump.
And Microsoft already found from the first generation that people just can not pay for a phone that doesn't have those
Ive never used the popup cam on the oneplus 7t(m), its a good enough design for those that dont want the selfie cam
Guess I'll be waiting till it drops to 650 again.
Same here. 😂
Me too haha
Yourself and The Unlokr are the only tech gurus bringing this BRILLIANT format. Outstanding!!!
If they can do this form factor with the actual hinge and separate glass screens but put it in a smaller smartphone size plus iron out any software glitches, I would happily switch to this more durable flip smartphone. I can’t get over the fragility of those continuous flexible screens that break in less than a year
At that price point, I feel like I'd rather save up for the Fold 3 for higher dependability and cleaner feature set.
Fold isn’t even more expensive with the promos
How does the fold have higher dependency when the screen is so fragile.... I prefer the Duo which has bigger screens better multitasking, better camera specs, bigger battery and Slimmer body.
Nah, fold is rubbish bendy crappola.
0:59 I’m influencing so much…. 😂 pleasure meeting you Michael!
I had to rewatch your bit twice. Love ur fashion advice man! keep up the good work you deserve it

Another very enjoyable video, the perfect accompaniment to the mornings first cup of coffe. Dumbo looks like an interesting place to visit, a new public library is always very welcome, love when you and David get out together. Have a great day.
The surface duo 2 just came out today in japan. Before I bought one I was looking for a review but every other “review” video I found were only rants about why they hate the device. This video articulates every aspect (the good and the bad) with a fair point of view. Thanks for the great video!
My guy Mr. Mobile always makes the day go by smoother with a dope tech vid. Keep em coming!
Damn, I've been waiting for them to come out with a new DS.
Microsoft DS.

288mb stability /bug fix update just came out. Haven't noticed the issue with swiping up to get to the home screen... But we will see
Never had that issue with the first Duo. But I don't swipe up from outside the screen, I swipe from the white bar at the bottom. Works everytime. For me it's not even a workaround. That's how I do it naturally.
I'll want one when they offer version without a camera bump. no external camera fine by me. was my position then, is my position now.

I can't even explain how much I appreciate Mr mobile and the quality of the videos. And the honesty.
Really beautiful device and out of ordinary . Very tempted to ditch my fold 3 and get this one.
I had the original Surface Duo and now a Fold 3. I find the Surface Duo's screens better for running two apps side by side, but if I prefer using one app full screen (e.g. web browsing, reading a pdf or document, reading a long email), the single large screen on the Fold3 is better.
@@veryboringname. agreed and a very sensible comment . I went with duo 2 . I just don’t like the plastic feeling on the screen and also the width . But both are great devices for their own .
I bought the $500 Surface Duo bundle pack on Amazon a week and let me tell you....People just don't know what they are missing...Total game changer not having to stop the Movie to do anything on my phone.
Would you pay $1800 for it though (with pen, case and 256GB plus taxes)?
Why is Microsoft not thinking through before launching devices with buggy software?? Its so weird that should happen in 2021.. So agree with that statement Michael! Love your videos man. ❤️❤️❤️
Microsoft launchiing buggy software?!? OMFG! When did they release software that didn't have a bug? Lol!
I think Microsoft should have doubled down on making the last design better. Instead of making it a wedge with the camera bump.
I have been interested in this concept since the Surface Duo 1, but it was so buggy, expensive, and under specced that I decided to wait until the second one to come out(as you recall the first Samsung Fold wasn't great either). Then last year the Duo 2 came out which I have been enamored with but it was expensive and laggy at launch(based on the reviews at the time) so again I decided to wait. However after several months with the price drop and the multiple software updates, I see that the re-reviews have said it is really good now so I decided about getting it as my back-up device(I am using a Fold 3 as my primary device). I found it on Swappa for $870 for the 256GB in mint condition with a skin on it and screen protectors on it. So I pounced on it and I look forward to getting my hands on it and using it. I just can't get enough of new tech, and I don't think I can go back to the candy bar/slab phones again. 📱📱🤳🤳
I like that you used it as designed; two screens side by side, instead of trying to use as one big screen. Too bad the great hardware is let down by poor software.
Microsoft havn't put out any finished software for over a decade now. It's always just a broken mess of trying to fix previous issues, creating more problems in the process. I think windows 7 was the last time consumers wanted to use MS software, but even that was a fix for previous stupid decisions no one can understand or reason with.
I feel like Microsoft always rushing their products, this device has quite a lot of potential but it's a shame that they keep doing it
I miss Steve balmer
Yeah. They did it with the first Duo, then they did it with Windows 11, and now they did it with Duo 2
I love these kind of phones as daily drivers since I mostly use calendar, keep, gmail and other productive apps but uh...those bugs..
Wait, are we already at Duo 2? Man I don't know if tech is moving fast or just I'm too slow to catch up...
Great review Michael, as always. Keep up the good work, you're a gem.
I wish I had the space and time to buy all the great tech out there.
Great video. I think I’ll give the duo a miss! I think there’s just so many ways this device could be better/look better. Does it really need those huge bezels? I’m pretty sure you could easily get another inch on the screen there. For me I think something like the z fold would be better. See what next year brings.
... It'd be literally impossible to hold without top & bottom bezels.
Bless you, you must have been fairly hammered to forget a tripod 😅 unless it was a tiny one.
Also David is just adorable!!! ❤️
10:09 - OMG that flicker!! I'm sure you can't see it IRL but I'll bet you can perceive it!
Thank you for the constant thoroughness in your reviews
The best technology story-teller.
In retrospect I’m glad I stuck to my plan of getting a 256GB Duo 1 for a mere $440 and just relegating my iPhone SE 2020 as a makeshift digital camera. I know the Duo 1 has its own issues but it’s cheap enough and I wanna get my own view on it, plus side benefits like perfect DS emulation intrigue me far too much
I plan on doing the same thing (buying a cheap 1st gen Surface Duo to try out the experience vs the LG V60 with the dual-screen case).
I have an S21 Ultra and Pixel 6 Pro but I just had to pick up the Duo 2. Too many things intrigued me about it. And I think I could get used to this dual screen form factor as I am "feeling" the productivity I can achieve from this device. That said, there are two near showstoppers for me. One, is the camera...coming from the S21 Ultra and Pixel, it is a moderate step down. Sure, it can take some amazing photos and it is impressive when it does. But low light is horribly grainy and sky shots gets too washed out whereas Pixel or S21 Ultra will adjust and deliver amazing photos. But most troubling...the OS is buggy, even with the "December Update." I still get those "stuck" notification shades, animations or spanning issues and they won't go away until a reboot. And the camera app crashes to where you exit it and it perpetually goes back into it until the OS crashes hard and you have to 12 second press the power button to reboot.
Smaller issues for me would be how to use this in the car...no, I don't text and drive but I do want to be able to touch my media controls and this means you have to have a screen touching a seat or cup holder or a place that can potentially scuff/scratch the other screen.
I want to use this day to day...and I might even live with its camera...but the OS crashing and the situationally impractical issues make it hard to. And it is a shame because this is a great form factor with amazing hardware.
I'm impressed at leaving that chonk of a tripod behind! I have the physically similar 3221WN from back when the company still used the Bogen name in the US.
I'm glad for the review and disappointed in the device. I'll be looking to replace my Pixel 3 XL sometime soon and this was an outside possibility but with these issues...
If your current device is a Pixel 3 XL, then this device was probably not going to be a good fit for you anyways. Honestly, I think this device functions differently than the previous and there is a bit of a learning curve, making it even less likely the right fit for Pixel owners where simplicity and ease of use out of the box is priority.
A couple of those device shots reminded me of the Motorola Backflip from years gone by!
I use the original duo daily as a secondary device for productivity. I'll leave camera performance to my Pixel 6 pro... Whenever it arrives.
My secondary device is an iPad 11-inch M1 with keyboard case and pen with 5G and I find that much more productive as I type a lot. I would be wasting so much time using a Duo2 and as time is money its effective cost of $1800 would be in reality much higher than that.
I have no plans of buying this thing but i thoroughly enjoyed this video. It was like watching one of those travel documentaries o NatGeo which also had a product review squeezed into it. Love it ❤️
On Marques’s video I saw a comment that said “designing a phone after a book is like designing a car after a horse”
And it was a stupid analogy there.
And I love this phone to the death in the same rate I hate it because it's still far from perfection. Being early adopter sucks, but let's give this concept two or three more spins and it certainly will be in a much better state.
From the look of things, it probably will not survive for another spin after this one
@@kenbee1957 At least if it inspire better alternatives, it already did its job =)

I feel for Microsoft. The hardware is still gorgeous and filled with cleverness, but they're handicapping it so badly with poor software. Something they might have been able to get away with just a few years ago, but we're on the 3rd generation Galaxy Fold now.
I really hope they get it together though.
Yes...even with the "December Update", the software is still a mess...some "super fans" will say I'm wrong but since trying to use it day to day, the bugs/crashes are show stoppers.
always appreciate your reviews Mr Mobile
I got the original Duo when it was discontinued. I think it was about $300 on eBay. For that price it is an incredible phone. But neither the first gen or this one are worth the $1400 or whatever starting price. They have some useful gimmicks but otherwise they are fairly run of the mill most of the time.
Thanks Mr Mobile once again fantastic video....👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
🤔 some of the photos from the Duo looked better than the iphone. Why all the hate for the duo?
I like how you balance work and friendship. Been a fan of you since Windows Phone. God I miss the consistent Metro UI WP 7 era. guess the world will never have a consistent experience any more.
Saw that Easter egg of your Pixel 6 review!
You might envision the first true foldable Surface device of this category. They bring back the teardrop articulating hinge of the Surface Book line and wrap it around a folding screen. You avoid the pitfalls of smaller hinges and adhere to previous design language. Be even better if they wrapped it in some luxurious fabric reminiscent of the Surface Laptop Studio.
I really do love tech but I have to say, your production style, review quality and voice would make me happily watch your videos even if I didn’t have any real interest in the products you review. Keep up the great work…..
To me that camera bump kills the form factor. I'd rather get the Surface 1, assuming they ever fix the software.
The software is pretty smooth on the Duo 1 actually, I got a $500 one last week.

I love my duo 2 but I agree with everything he said. I don't think the surface duo camera is as good as my 3 year old iPhone X Max, but the camera bump is twice the size. I hate to say it but it really feels like Microsoft just put something out to stop the bleeding. I'm hopeful that they can correct these issues through software updates but I'm sure that's what duo 1 users also hoped for.

I will say most cons of this phone like keyboard and notification drop down and the side bar for notifications and battery, that can all be fixed via software and updates, so I think this phone albeit given a couple of months, will be actually quite an exceptional phone in looks and daily use
It's ironic that MS have released two dual screen devices now, yet have abolished most dual screen capabilities in Windows 11.
