  • The Surface Duo 2 has been upgraded in just about every way compared to the original. But is that enough to make Microsoft's $1,500 phone worth recommending?

I love my Duo. I choose not to go the fold route because it's more prone to scratching the screen. I've seen reviews complaining that if you want to put the device inside out down then you could scratch the screen but clearly they've not been using gorilla glass. If you scratch the screen you were doing something stupid. The only thing I want to know is if the Duo 2 finally made the usb charge port more durable.

I own both the Z Fold 3 and the OG Surface Duo. Each device has its unique use case. The Z Fold 3 is a media power house that offers split screen multitasking. The Duo is a multitasking beast perfect for mobile professionals that require a workflow that calls for constantly needing access to multiple applications. I constantly keep outlook running on my left screen for work related emails. And so everything else on the right screen. On the Z Fold 3 this is not easily accomplished or very satisfying. Once I click to open another app, it’s going to completely take over the entire screen and then I must split screen the new app with one running in the background. Then both apps running have a severe narrow aspect to them. On the duo I get both apps in full aspect ration.

I don't really get this kind of reviews. It s a dual screen setup, it may be nice if a particular app adapts to be expand acrross the screens but is not the main goal, if you are looking to use your apps like that it goes against the most useful feature for this device, which is be able to multitask, if you use one app open across both screen, just one app you'll be better suit with a big screen phone/tablet or whatever. But multitasking just like a dual setup at your office/home, like pluging a second monitor to your laptop is such a nice thing to have if you workflow needs that, but also I think is this sort of thing you didn't know how much you need it until you get used to.

LG tried the dual screen concept in a slightly different way by using a case with a second screen. All I see with the MS Surface Duo is a refined version of that concept without the ability to pop the phone out the case to have a single screen device. LG's poor marketing let it down and they have now left the mobile market. Reviews like this keep focusing on the fact that there are two separate screens that will never be as good as a single, large screen when trying to use an app across both screens. What they don't emphasise enough is the multi-tasking ability of the dual screen concept. The ability to have a RUclips video playing while scrolling webpages is the thing I am going miss the most when I one day replace my LG V60 with something newer. I will not replace the LG with a Surface Duo because it's literally twice the price of what the LG V60 cost when new. I also what something I can slip into my pocket when leaving home. Without the dual screen case that's accomplished with the LG V60 but not so easy when in the case. I just see the Surface Duo not appealing to many people which is a pity because multi-tasking with two screens is great.

I heard that after a bunch of software updates that the device is running better and it's not as buggy as it was at launch. I am really interested in this as being my backup phone(I currently have a Fold 3 as my main device) and love new technology as I am kind of bored with traditional slab phones. Interesting review. Clearly the Duo 2 is a big improvement over the first model. It seems the reviewer is saying that not enough apps take advantage of the two screen design. Assume for a moment that a lot more apps use the two screen design effectively, is the hardware implementation deficient? It doesn't seem like it. Not mentioned is that Duo 2 can use the surface pen (nice) The camera tests are only preliminary. Some objective tests would be more useful and the reviewer indicated that these are yet to be done. More 2 screen apps and a lower price might be widen the appeal of the Duo.

Here is what I want from Surface Duo 2:
-Vertical orientation. Application on top screen, input on bottom screen.
-Easy switching between applications on top screen - onenote, joplin, remote desktop, SSH, sms messaging, discord, etc.
-Easy switching between input methods on the bottom screen - swipe keyboard, full tap keyboard (for ssh), handwriting input, and mouse-emulation touchpad (mainly for rdp).
-A good handwriting interpreter to text input, so I can handwrite messages for sms/discord/etc. So far I haven't been able to find this demonstrated.
Everything else I'd want I've seen demonstrated, and it all looks really impressive, except this use case. Can anyone tell me if it can operate like this? In particular, does it even *have* handwriting interpretation input?

Thinking about the manner in which people use dual monitors on their desktops, it appears the reviewer has completely missed this type of usage. Context switching is of course easier with two displays. Software that allows toolbars and app windows to be detached and moved to the 2nd screen provides additionally flexibility and customisation. The Duo 2 provides an opportunity for software developers to take advantage of “2 screens” in a mobile device.

While I appreciate your review of the Microsoft Surface Duo, I have to disagree with your focus on the selfie camera and gaming capabilities. The Surface Duo is a powerful device designed for productivity and multi-tasking, with the ability to handle online banking, money transfers, and other business-related tasks with ease. It's disappointing to see such a narrow-minded approach to the device's capabilities, as it ignores the true potential of this innovative hardware. I urge you to reconsider your review approach and explore the full range of features that the Surface Duo has to offer.

May you and the gang at CNET need to stick to the boring slab phone reviews. These are good for people who can only do one thing at a time.

I disagree. You don't understand that the reason for having two discrete screens is to run two apps concurrently. The fact that you can span apps is a bonus... If you think more apps need to be able to use span mode, you fundamentally don't understand this device.
