      @@ChristianCalson the camera is pretty decent in my opinion, camera quality is not something most people will complain about in 2022 especially if you're just posting pictures to Instagram.... And when you combine the camera, the refresh rate, the way better speakers, and and more high quality feel... That $999 is a steal. Duo 1 is still cool though

    The thing I like the most about Surface Duo is the whole ecosystem of it. When people come over to talk to you, you close the phone, there is that super satisfying thud and it signals to your company that they are important. A candy bar phone is like always on due to the screen lighting up with every notification. With Duo, even the glance bar limits interactions with your phone, but when you open it you mean business.

  • @stever6986
    @stever6986 2 года назад +8

    Great comparison. I have had an original Surface Duo since last summer. I waited until the price cratered before making the jump because the form factor was so different. I'm sold on the concept but have not been satisfied with the poor general engineering design of Duo 1...not the dual screens or the hinges, but the sharp edges and outer glass that cracks in your back pocket if you lean to heavily on a chairback, not to mention the USB port that cracks on every Duo 1. My other original Duo complaints are the camera software (major shutter lag...especially on the initial shot, software constantly changing screens when you are trying to take a picture, software jumping to 'video' when you are selecting between 'photo' and 'panorama' options), and the inferior Bluetooth connectivity of the original Duo (which you have talked about before but didn't mention in this video). If I get more than 6-8 feet away from my phone, I lose reception on my headphones.
    And while the software for the Duo has taken incredible strides in the right direction, there are some other persistent annoying bugginess to the original Duo, but no showstoppers. One that I haven't been able to get past is the fact that I can't get it to connect to my main home network...it won't accept the password. I've never had an issue with other devices (and I've added devices after trying to add the Duo, so it's not a device capacity issue on the router). I can add the Duo to the open 'guest' network that doesn't require a password. However, since the Duo is not on the same network as my other devices, I can't utilize sharing functions on apps that require both devices to be on the same network. Has anyone else encountered this on the original Duo (or Duo 2) and is there a workaround???
    Bottomline is that I will be upgrading to Duo 2 because while I don't do a lot of photography on my phone, I do need to take occasional photos (and panoramas) for work and the Duo 1 photo software has finally exhausted my patience...and I've also missed shots due to the initial shutter lag (on the rare occasions I use it for personal photography, like during the flyover on Opening Day). I thought your upside-down video was interesting because I've noticed that when I place photos that I took with my Duo into a document using MS Word, the pictures always are imported upside down...I figured that might have something to do with the fact that the camera is designed as a selfie camera, but it's weird because they appear right-side up on the camera roll but always import into the documents upside-down. The other smaller issues/annoyances weren't worth the extra $$ for the Duo 2 at $1,500, but if the current $999 price drop holds for much longer, it will be worth it for the better camera(s) and software alone (even though I'm a very occasional photographer)!

    Thanks for your excellent, well thought out review! The Duo 2 is way better than the 1. The features that I like the most on the Duo 2 are the larger screens, the curved inner edges of the screens, the tighter hinge, the fact that you can see the thumbnails of photos, and the amazing "periscope camera" effect, which to me is a great advantage!
    Two days ago I spent 3 hours playing with the Duo 2 at Best Buy. I pulled up a chair in front of their tethered display unit, and this made it much easier to spend a long time with it. I learned a lot, but not 1 tenth of what you have taught me in your excellent, thorough review. So again, thanks!

    brand new duo 1 on swappa for 315, 714 used for the duo 2. What is great about your comparrison is that you actually use the devices so they handle different than with generic fresh installed apps where cache, trackers and bugs are not so much involved in the process with clean images fresh out of the box. I cmpared mine to someone's duo 2 and we both agreed the duo 1 is actually nicer. It is not really a phone you see as a point and click camera so the only camera they should have gone all out on is the inside camera for meetings. zoom, skype, teams, discord etc. I am not even actively using mine since about two months ago but I cant bring myself to sell it haha. I imagine being able to flash these with linux distros with a flawless experiance.

      Well I would agree the camera in marketing has gone over the top , and other useful convenience features have sadly become less or of almost no priority to phone companies sadly.
      At the same time I must disagree, if you are a person that makes use of good camera features clearly they are nice to have , if I was to use your same reasoning, I could say why do you need two super thin brittle screens which clearly adds compromises to the device in some ways.
      And having a good zoom is very nice if you want that extra distance to get shots that are just not possible on a standard camera.
      In the end it comes back to user use . case

    This is getting interesting! Before, I always felt the Duo 2 was a better device holistically. You can grab it and do pretty much anything anyone else with a flagship phone can do. But it was almost $1000 more than a fire sale Duo. This recent price drop has made the Duo 2 much more compelling. It is now in the ballpark price wise with a Pixel 6 Pro or a Samsung S22. I hope this helps it gain traction and convinces Microsoft that v3 could be much more successful if it could launch for like $1199. Great content as always! I think the biggest up the duo 2 has is definitely the 5g connectivity. I've been using the duo1 and cannot connect in areas where I normally would when having a 5g phone. Because of that the duo has been pretty annoying to use. The camera bump on the duo2 wouldn't be that annoying had Microsoft created a bumper case that encases the camera and stretches down to bottom to balance it out and keep it stabilized when laid down. I will definitely get the duo 2 when the price drops more. Hoping they'll still have a few around when it does

  • @adinakruijssen3056
    @adinakruijssen3056 Год назад

    The biggest problem with the camera bulge/gap on the 2 is that it makes the phone uneven, if you use it in the folded mode a lot you need to be really careful about not holding the bottom closed too tightly. And never put it in your pocket closed that way, because it can crack the screen due to the stress of being pushed on the bottom while the bulge keeps it open towards the top. The crack appears on the rounded screen edges on the right screen (the one with the camera bulge). Idk if I explained that clearly but it's really easy to break if you're not careful on that mode. One way to help is if you have the magnetic pen case, keep the pen on the back whenever you close it that way, since it evens out the gap and prevents the pressure crack I described.
    This might also be because I tend to use the left screen for phone mode, but it seems designed for you to use the right?

    As a Duo 1 owner the main reason to get Duo 2 is the "phone mode main screen" feature. 8 out of 10 times when I flip to phone mode I end up with the wrong screen. I even went as far as the counter intuitively trick Duo in showing me the "right" screen when I flip.. It failed. Duo just doesn't understand the angle its in at all. I much prefer selecting your main screen for phone mode. But I don't prefer it enough to spend all that money on Duo 2. I just don't understand why Duo 1 can't have the main screen feature...

    • @R.B.
      @R.B. 2 года назад +2

      The trick I found, which is highly reproducible for me, is to use it the way it was intended. Be stationary, open to book mode, hold the screen you want to use, and fold back the screen you don't want to be shown. If you are moving or turning, it seems to make it difficult to tell what you intend. Even using the camera with this sort of setup, the camera switches as expected. When it fails, going back to book mode and repeating will usually get things correct. I think it's just that I've become trained on how to use it best and things just seem to work.

      But i am pretty much with you…. these devices dont need that much power, its a nice to have to make sure upcoming software updates and features are supported in a snappy way.
      When i really need computing power im using anyways a proper computer, so a good old x86, Intel i7 desktop (DIY built and selected components as well overclocked and optimized to its limits) or my loved 16“ MacBook Pro 2021 which replaced in 2022 finally my aging 2010 15“ model.
      In fact on the iPad Air 5 i partially even „hate“ the M1…. it drains so much faster the battery than Air 4 with A14 and especially older iPads in general with A10 to A13 chips. Even my still working iPad 2 from 2011 with its ORIGINAL BATTERY last about as long as the pretty much brand new Air 5 which is a shame.

    I really like the concept. However, the lack of any rubber rim to protect the glass when closing seems odd to me. Isnt glass exposed to a higher risk of damage is a sharp particle is stuck on the screen? To my current knowledge, on surfaces are built like that.

    You pressed the "second camera" button on the Duo. Without a second camera, that switches the mirroring mode, but when in landscape it can flip the image. I have to rotate my pictures because of this. I think maybe it has to do with reading the accelerometer in the second screen which would be upside down. It's weird and not something I've completely figured out. I do rarely shoot video that the occasional upside down picture isn't terrible.

      I know that flash drives work fine for something like that, I use an app called CX file explorer to move files around that way and also over my local network.
