    I have been using Surface Duo 1 since the beginning of May 2022 and I love this device. I can't to go back to a standard phone with 1 screen. The pictures are ok for me, the battery also.

    I've commented on this channel about it before, but I actually preferred the duo 1 over the duo 2. By the time the duo 2 came out, I was already in a comfortable routine on how to use the duo 1 and after trying the 2, I couldn't justify the price jump. I was able to get it in 2021 at the first $400 price drop and I've used it as a work device always with a secondary phone phone without a hitch. Great device for teachers.

      @@Millicente in my opinion, I couldn’t justify the $1000 price difference. The main gripes I have with the duo 1 is on the camera. But if I’m using a secondary device anyway, it didn’t really matter.

      @@savagedragon1047 that's fair. I'm at this crossroads where I want to get the duo 2 to try the phone but at cheapest 850 open box it's hard to justify in case of a failed experiment. The duo 1 at under 400 new is easier to risk a dud but it also seems to be the clear worse phone

      @@Millicente duo 1 for the price alone. I had the 1, not much with the duo 2, only a newer chip, camera bump on the 2 (means never closes fully flush) vs the 1 which closes fully over. Now if the bezels put you off, the duo 2's is slightly thinner. Up to you

    Great reviews on Duo, mate. After seeing the launch of Duo via your channel and then watching your very first review, I have been hooked. I have been watching the progress and improvements over the last 2 years through your great work. I was actually hanging out for a review like this from you since your July update review on both devices. However, I decided to take the plunge 3 weeks ago. I live in New Zealand, so I ordered from Amazon US, and it arrived here in 8 days which was bloody fast. No carriers problems and received the big update when booted up, so all good. Looking forward to the August update. And thank you for your work in this space.

    I have been wanting one for awhile and I just scored a 256gb unlocked Duo 1 locally a few days ago in pristine condition for $200. I have watch numerous of your videos on Duo and you are spot on. After a few days of using it, I do love the things it does well and the dual screens is what drew me to the Duo to begin with, I use dual monitors at work and home and this just fits the bill. I can see this is definitely a secondary device for me mainly due to the camera (my daily driver currently is a Pixel 4xl) but will say the concept is spot on by Microsoft. The Duo 2 is way out the of the price range, but maybe I will give that one a go down the road. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft sticks with it, I had a Nokia Windows phone years back and I absolutely loved the interface and the hardware on that phone but MS could (or would) never get the software quite right and we see where that ended up. Great videos, God Bless!

      DANG you scored a prestine condition for 200? wild just having it as an ebook reader is worth 200. I paid like 450 for the same one used with a slim pen but your deal was much better. Mine feels super buggy now tho. I was not using it for last two to three months nad I kind of think its awful for playing games that are not ad free compared to any other device but for reading and browsing. I dont use it as a phone at all

    I got the d1 when it first came out through AT&T store with a payment plan. It was a little hard to get use to the gestures but Microsoft had a training program for it which helped. I learned how to use surface duo and avoid the so called bugs. Granted the software has gotten a lot better but I didn't have the problems other have said. That said I will never go back to a slab phone.
    The way to use the camera is simple and fast there is an icon on the lock screen and all you have to do is flip it all the way open (phone mode) and push the icon and the camera opens instantly. Take your picture in about a second. Thanks for your review you have been the most honest about the duo on RUclips.

    Thanks for your honest reviews and opinions. I have recently purchased a Surface Duo 1 for 399 eur and I think at that price is a good device. The small issues do not bother me (I think touch responsiveness is mostly related to fingers in the border when griping registering as multitouch), however my main concern is the battery life as the phone ages, but time will tell. The feature I miss the most from my previous phone is the external eInk always-on display, which was excellent for notifications and outstanding for operation under direct sun light (specially for map navigation), while now I have to open the phone to check (I do not want to use a smartwatch).

    Have to agree with you Shane. SD1 is now a great device, a mini dual monitor computing device is for me its sweet spot and is my one and only machine. I have tried to use the keyboard but as an ex BB Passport aficionado I struggle. So any large scale typing is done on a Bluetooth keyboard. A Shox headset for audio (I wear hearing aids - self inflicted! 🙄 so can't wear buds) and I am good to go. Not bothered about the camera for photography. I'd rather use a proper camera. Like putting on a vinyl record or making tea in a pot. Part of the enjoyment is in the rituals! People do comment on the phone. It amazes me that it is still, even after 2 years, not widely known about. Keep spreading the word!

    If the Duo 2 is still a bit expensive for you, definitely try the Duo 1 for £400-600 or so. It's a lovely device for that price and the performance is holding up very well in 2022.

The only thing I don't like about my Duo is that in my car or outside, the touch sensitivity can be really be bad. I tend to have to tap with my finger nail almost and this is very annoying considering my previous inexpensive Android phones, all had excellent touch. Are there any settings on the Duo that be tweaked to improve touch sensitivity?

    I got the Duo for 600EUR a few months before the significant updates came out that made the gestures functional. I always enjoyed holding the Duo, the hardware is just great. But the software bugs almost had me switch back to my old S10 for daily driving. But now with the current software it's absolutely a great device. There are still plenty of weird little bugs. Right before typing this, the keyboard "got stuck" behind the textbar of RUclips. I had to switch to landscape mode to fix it. Stuff like that does happen and I know I wouldn't have to deal with that on the S10. But the device is just too much fun to give up on despite the flaws.

    Got the Duo 1 for 400 and loved it, but then upgraded to Duo 2 and returned Duo 1 when there was a price drop.
    Duo 2 just arrived so setting it up, I wanted the better cameras and other improvements but I must say Duo 1 felt better in the hands due to the thinness and weight vs Duo 2 but if you want the camera improvements it's a trade off.
    Not really bother about the not closing flat together, doesn't seem as big a gap / problem as many reviewers made out.

    • @adinakruijssen3056
      @adinakruijssen3056 Год назад

      The biggest problem with the camera bulge/gap on the 2 is that it makes the phone uneven, if you use it in the folded mode a lot you need to be really careful about not holding the bottom closed too tightly. And never put it in your pocket closed that way, because it can crack the screen due to the stress of being pushed on the bottom while the bulge keeps it open towards the top. The crack appears on the rounded screen edges on the right screen (the one with the camera bulge). Idk if I explained that clearly but it's really easy to break if you're not careful on that mode. One way to help is if you have the magnetic pen case, keep the pen on the back whenever you close it that way, since it evens out the gap and prevents the pressure crack I described.
      This might also be because I tend to use the left screen for phone mode, but it seems designed for you to use the right?

    Well, I pulled the trigger last week and got 2 surface duos last week for my wife and I from Amazon. And i noticed a potential problem with both devices. When they came out of the box they were perfect, the lines were perfect almost unnaturally thin, etc. but after the initial charge and letting them sit over night (off charger) to make sure the batteries are still healthy (not knowing how long these have been sitting) the lines aren't as clean. Im thinking the batteries may have bulged a bit, deforming the case. Its not bad, just not what it was before it was charged. Since noticing this ive looked online and noticed people had this problem (and associated horror stories with getting replacements from microsoft) so apparently this was a problem early on as well.
    With how thin these are it really wouldn't take much at all to make these bulge. I'm just wondering if it will continue and get worse? I've seen folks online that had the screen lift enough that dust was getting underneath. Even at $300 that seems like a problem when you can get a pixel 6a for that... and while Im no the geeky side myself id prefer not to hand my wife something with issues that are just going to get worse.
    Anyone have experience with this?

I loved it.

    For me it's not the actual quality of the camera that lets it down, I could honestly live with it. For me, it's the physical process of using the camera that's a problem.
    I can sit here and flip the Duo in and out of "camera" mode in a flash, and it works EVERY TIME...but when I try to use it in anger, it ALWAYS goes wrong and I miss the shot by a mile 😂.
    At the end of the day, I remind myself that this was never supposed to be a point and shoot camera replacement and more likely designed with document scanning and zoom calls in mind.

    MS needs to either start leaking Duo 3 or plan on doing nothing until sometime next year. With the Fold 4, Google's next thing, and other competition from others, they need to generate buzz or it is going to be forgotten.
    My wife owned both Duo's and while I really liked the tech idea it needs upgrades and streamlining.
    I think the Duo 3 needs some kind of telephoto style lens because the Duo 1 folding flat is why I liked it better than the 2.

    • @scaryifliteral
      @scaryifliteral  2 года назад +2

      I've covered it a few times already, but there's no Duo planned this year. They are skipping a year and focusing on software while they finalize design on Duo 3 for fall of next year. I assume you mean a periscope camera, not telephoto - periscopes take up a ton of internal space Duo doesn't have to give. It would be very impressive to see them fit in competent cameras and no bump at the thickness they are. Literally never been done before, physics is hard to overcome.

      @@scaryifliteral Periscope, yes some days words are hard 😀
      Was saying I think that would be an amazing piece of tech but until that happens I personally am not as intrigued by the Duo.
      The concept is amazing, the execution is lacking in all areas. Not all areas at once of course, just there is always going to be a sacrifice. It's going to be one thing that doesn't fit into the fit design, which is a strong selling point.

    The only time I use RUclips or Odysee spanned is when it's in portrait orientation so I can get a close to full sized video and still see the comments. Don't know how people can watch with the big hinge down the middle of the content. More power to them, I guess.

    the thing that keeps holding me back from grabbing a Duo 1 is that its been out of a couple years now so they have been sitting on shelves and it makes me question how serviable the battery will be after all that time.

    • @NickSiekierski
      @NickSiekierski Год назад

      The same thought occurred to me but I'm confident the 1s are still being produced and what you're buying new now isn't one with a 2020 production date. There's too big of a gap between the price of the 1 and 2 and since MSFT has ironed out most of the software issues, coupled with the upcoming Android 12L release, supply chain delays related to the 2, a recession, and no model 3 this year, the 1 has become an attractive offering that it doesn't make sense to eliminate.

    What about software updates from Microsoft? They committed to 3 years so no updates from Sept 23. Still worth it? Will it still be useable and safe after updates stop?

    • @scaryifliteral

      You've got round about another year of support and then after that it is what it is. Might slip behind on security updates. How much that effects you will be subjective. Loads of people are using phones that are out of date.

    • @scaryifliteral

      Unfortunately this bug has persisted for some people regardless of the update. The only advice I can really give is to keep the area above the screens clean because the sensors in there help Duo know what posture it's in.

      It's not odd to use in my opinion but people say it looks odd. I make calls all the time with my Duo. I particularly enjoy answering calls as flipping the screen around when someone is calling you will answer it. No software swipe or button press involved. Its strangely satisfying.
