  • Quick solution to access external storage using my Surface Duo first generation. It seems that using a usb 2.0 device/adapter will allow surface duo to recognize the storage drive.

    Nice video. Can you just use a flash drive that runs on USB 2.0 or do you always have to use an OTG that runs on USB2.0? Thanks.

    • @crimsonpacman
      @crimsonpacman  Год назад +2

      Maybe, but I think it’s rare nowadays to find flash drive with type c connector running on usb 2.0 exclusively(most of them I think 3.0 or above with backward compatibility to 2.0). I guess having an otg is just simpler without have to worry much about the flash drive spec

    if your files are not larger than 4gb you can use FAT32 which willl work on all operating systems or you can use ntfs but then it wont be readable on linux or android. suprised your duo did not detect your usb to ask what you wanted to do with it but will have to test it tommorrow if I get a chance. I recall using a tiny usb=c to sdcard adapter to copy over my audio books

      Yes, definitely another caveat of my setup here. Would love to have better solution, or maybe something like wireless portable storage could be a better alternative

    Did you try pulling the notification tray down????
    ...it shows up on my surface dou from there then it gives you a choice to choose main device and secondary device and functions

      I remembered that when I use flash drive with exFAT format, the flash drive will be detected but it will ask to be formatted (and whether setup as phone storage or external storage). If I use FAT32 formatted flash drive, it just automatically set up as external drive

    Developer options. Already has a mode for this.
    But that said, if youre moving files from your computer to your phone why would you not just put the files in Onedrive? It literally exists for that reason.
    Secondly, the 12L update has given us essentially Microsoft Continuum. By just enabling "force desktop mode" in developer options. You dont have to resort to archaic forms of moving media when cloud based services already exist.
    I use my Duo as my primary device now. The only thing i dont use it for is taking pictures. I use my Pixel 6 pro for that. But all if my pictures and media is synced between the 2 devices. I cannot imagine a situation where i would need to move a massive amount of media that doesnt already exist. My massive amount of music that i own is all stored in the cloud so it syncs overnight, my pictures are all in my google drive, and every bit of information on my computer can be instantly shared with my devices through one drive. I dont see why this is necessary. .
    But thats just my take

      I just like to store some of my documents and files locally. It will also be handy in situations where you don't have access to the internet. And also I think it is just a basic feature as an option to move your files around.
      But, I agree that cloud storage is probably the most convenient way to sync all your files to all of your devices.
      Thanks for sharing!

      Quite a lot of people don’t want all there data in the cloud, nor do they always have the bandwidth and data allocations with that. Moving files locally should always be an option. I have been in countless situations without internet, or with very limited data.
      As @Crimson Pacman said, it’s a basic feature.

    • @darpinian1

      @@rokko_hates_japan Basic is a term that is constantly redefined as technology evolves. Basic features from the past get left behind as developers usher in technology to simplify. Headphone jack.... used to be a basic feature until the technology in TWS got good enough to warrant developers pushing away from wired headphones. However, i wouldn't confuse the fact that i want something to it being a basic feature. I want a micros SD card... its not a basic feature. QWERTY Keybaord, easily removable battery, radio reception without internet, multi day battery life, IR Blaster, etc. All were basic features. They are not now.
      With the complete upgrade of tech and as it moves into the future, use cases like what youre describing is niche. Its easier to buy one of the few phones left the have expandable store already, rather for for some reason find yourself with no signal or WiFi and for some reason have all this random other tech that makes is so you can for some reason transfer files over.
      Thats just my 2 cents tho. I dont think you guys are wrong, i just think there are 8 people out there that would find themselves and would be better off with a different phone

      @@darpinian1 I also want removable batteries, micro sd slots, and headphones jacks to be standard.
      They reason they are not has nothing to with technology. It’s simply to make more money.
      they created a market boom for external battery packs, adapters, Bluetooth earphones (I don’t care how good they are, they aren’t as good as wired. Just more convenient) and insane markups for internal storage…
      They could also make them a lot more durable, instead of making these glass sandwiches that they know people will break and pay for repairs.

      @@rokko_hates_japan its not that i do or dont agree. its thats this is my entire point. Bluetooth technology has gotten pretty damn impressive. Extremely impressive actually. Pretending it hasnt and making arguments that involve reasoning that sounds anything like "i dont care what anyone says" is usually a conversation ender. Removable batteries was a limiter to technology....my previous phone could charge from 0 to 100 in less than 20 minutes... thats crazy. I used to love transferring all my media to my new phone buy just swapping my microSD over, but now phones dont come with SD standard, now i just load up the new phone put my Google password in and it transfers everything over. I have an old pixel 2 sitting in a drawer so i have unlimited storage. this isnt about what i like or dont like.... this is about technology making my life easier. I could wish for the old days as much as anyone but to deny the crazy advancements from the last 4 years would be laughable.
      Technology has grown more and more superior every year, as it does....the old standard gets replaced. I could always put a sim card in my old Nokia super brick and relive the days of snake. I could alway charge up the blackberry and become a productivity beast, but those were different times where sending an email considered me a power user. Now my workflow revolves around how much can i accomplish in the smallest amount if time possible with the least amount of effort. Thats life. We grow and adapt

      I think depend on your need and budget, duo 2 probably better if you want to go all in with the form factor and maybe as phone replacement.

    • @rokko_hates_japan
      @rokko_hates_japan Год назад

      I think the duo form factor is better. I have a duo 2 and wish it didn’t have the camera bump. It’s annoying and constantly in the way and doesn’t slide in and out of a pocket as easily.
      I am thinking about selling it and getting a duo.
